Spring 2015 - the Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer`s Resource Center
spring VOlume 21, Issue 2 ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015 Twenty Years of Caring The Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center has come a long way since its very first newsletter was printed in 1995 (see below). As we mark 20 years of helping people cope with dementia we are excited for future growth and continuing to move the Center forward in positive directions. Jan Kerlin, Executive Director Practical Support for Coping with Dementia Our Mission: The mission of the Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center is to provide educational, informational, and supportive assistance for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder and their caregivers in Lee County. The Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center was established in 1995. Our center is named after Alvin A. Dubin whose widow, Zelda Dubin, made a generous donation to ensure the viability of a resource center in Lee County. Throughout his lifetime, Alvin Dubin used both his time and assets to help others. His legacy will continue due to the generosity of his wife, Zelda. We are forever indebted to Zelda for her dedication to our cause. Al and Zelda will long be remembered for their generosity and commitment to making our community a better place to live. For more information about the Alvin A. Surveys from caregivers who had interactions (support groups, home/office visits) with center program staff indicated that 100% of caregivers could identify at least one specific piece of information they learned at support group that was helpful to them about memory loss. Additionally, 92% of the caregivers could identify at least one community resource they learned about at support group for individuals with memory loss and their caregivers. 98% of caregivers could identify at least one way that they have learned to deal with changes in their loved ones by attending support group and 86% of caregivers could identify at least one way that they have lessened the effects of stressful situations by attending support group. Lastly, in the words of the caregivers themselves: ““My life has been so much better since I’ve been coming to these meetings”, “This support group is very important to me. It helped me to understand more of what is going on with my spouse”, “We all have problems and it is very helpful in discussing them. Very often the problems are solved. Also, we know that help is available if needed”, “The support groups have great value for helping us cope and continue to meet the needs of our family members as they progress through the decline of the disease”, “It helps to know that there are other caregivers in the same boat” and “Have made friends here, and this is a very important part of my social life”.
