Judging Guides are an important part of JCNA's program to improve the quality and standardization of JCNA
Concours judging and the Judges' knowledge of various Jaguar models. Judging Guides are intended to
augment official Jaguar publications by supplying well-researched information not readily available or
conveniently presented elsewhere. Following AGM approval, a Judging Guide becomes an official JCNA
document. The Judging Guides, and other official Jaguar Cars publications, (see Rule Book Appendix C) may
be used by Entrants and Judges alike to validate or challenge the authenticity or appropriateness of items,
features, materials, patterns, colors, configurations or accessories found on the Jaguar automobiles covered. All
Judging Guides are subject to editing and/or correction as additional verified information is acquired.
Copyright 2006, JCNA, copy privileges are extended to JCNA members carrying a current membership card.

PREFACE: See Appendix A for 6-Cylinder Series 3 E-types
The following information is intended as a reference to help the knowledgeable Series 3 E-type judge
determine what is correct on a given car. While information is believed correct, JCNA, the parties quoted, or
myself cannot be held responsible for errors. The final responsibility of presenting a correct car for judging
lies solely with the entrant. JCNA reserves the right to modify, change, and update this guide as new
information becomes available.
FORMATTING:
Per JCRC guidelines this Judges’ Guide follows the JCNA Score Sheets in most cases. Where not practical
to do so, I’ve grouped components that are in the same area, part of a system, or are connected in some way
together. I’ve tried to start at the front of the car and work toward the back, but the Engine Compartment
presented many challenges as to front to back organization. For those interested in knowing where the
information cited came from, I’ve used red type for references; those not interested can mentally turn the red
type off - the guide reads quicker without this information. Yellow highlighting indicates the item requires
further confirmation. If anyone has official Jaguar documentation confirming a requested item, please
contact me.
COMPONENT COLORS: See Appendix A for Yellow Chromate Conversion Coating (YCCC)
I’ve relied heavily on the figures from Richard Russ’ Jaguar V-12 E-type a Guide to Authenticity for colors
and finishes, as it was published in 1991, when the oldest of the V-12 E-types were only 20 years old. I
believe it’s the best evidence available in one place that we have today. Although out of print for some time,
On November 7th, 2006, I learned that it is now available on CD from the usual suspects.
As a service to fellow enthusiasts, I’ve listed available Hammerite and Plasti-kote products when these
are known to closely match the original colors found on Series 3 E-types.

BD.37169 RH) - operates cable connected to adjustable vents in Footwell
Note: In the photo above, the black label with white arrow and “DEFROST” is an Unidentified
Jaguar Part (UJP). UJPs cannot be found in any official Jaguar parts publication and some say they
simply don’t exist because they can’t be documented. Others say they exist, simply because they’ve
seen them. I’m of the opinion that they may exist only if I see many of them, and then continue to
search for the documentation☺. In this case, Don Snyder of the Houston Jaguar Club provided the
documentation – there is a picture of one on pages 8 and 9 of Publication E12-1 250M 3/73, a 1973
sale brochure entitled Jaguar V-12: The ultimate cat. These labels have also been reported on 1972
Series 3 E-types and they may correspond with the Chassis No’s given with the Mid change below.

Note: Reference C, Page 214, lists the chassis change numbers from OTS 1S.20173 and 2+2 1S.72682
and Reference D, Page 66 & 67, lists the same chassis change numbers. I have not been able to confirm
these numbers using the “Official Jaguar Documentation”. I believe the change was from OTS 1S.20181
and 2+2 1S.72691 as these chassis numbers correspond to the carpet change that had to be made to
accommodate the air vent in the LH and RH Closing Panel Assemblies - Dash Front, Lower. The chassis
number change points for the carpet change can be found in references A and B pages 28.44 & 33.47
respectively. If anyone has official Jaguar documentation proving a different change point I’d like a
copy.

Firewall: RH BD.40958
Firewall: LH BD.40959
Note: Russ implies that the change dealt with the addition of vinyl inserts, but these inserts were also
found on the Series 2 2+2s. The firewall carpet never received vinyl inserts. I believe the firewall carpet
change was made to accommodate the new air vent in the LH and RH Closing Panel Assemblies - “Dash
Front, Lower” (from earlier parts books) when the Fresh Air Ventilation System was added. I use the
above numbers as the correct chassis number change for the Fresh Air Ventilation System. The late front
RH and LH carpets may have had more insulation to aid the Fresh Air Ventilation System - confirmation
requested

CARBURETTORS: Part Nos. per reference A pages 25.44 – 25.49 and reference B, pages 30.44 – 30.49
4-Zenith Stromberg 175 CD-2SE’s - two on each side - LH Front and RH Rear fitted with an enrichment
device (choke) operated by a bifurcated cable (Part No. C.34854) secured to these carburettors with a black
oxide clip (Part No 12278) - see reference D, figure 49
Die cast aluminum dash pot covers secured with Pozidriv® screws. There is conflicting information
regarding the carburetor anti-tamper device; 1) The parts catalogues show a lead disc (Part No. 11553) with
one pre-embedded wire used for insertion through a perpendicular hole at the end of a longer Pozidriv®
screw shaft, after running through the hole the wire is inserted into a preformed hole in the lead disk and
sealed by squishing with a special tool that leaves an embossed “Z” on one side of the disk. 2) The workshop
manual shows a small peg (lead plug) that is driven into the Pozidriv® head of the back rear dash pot screw
of each carburetor. The workshop manual makes specific reference, after servicing, to, “Drive a new lead
plug into the cover securing screw.” Early models may have had the lead disks, later models had the lead
plug; no information available on chassis number change point. If you have official Jaguar publications with
this data please forward a copy to me for inclusion in this guide.
Piston damper covers are black plastic with red fiber sealing washers. MY ‘71 domes used a red emission
pack sticker. Cylindrical boss on dash pot has green emissions inspection paint dab for MY ‘71-72 and
blue inspection paint dab for MY ‘73-74. Temperature compensator covers are white plastic and secured
with cadmium screws. Throttle shafts are machined brass. Each carburetor has a friction fit (no hose clamp)
black rubber hose at the back with herring bone pattern and yellow strip that connects to the YCCC engine
Breather Pipe that crosses over the engine along with several other emission system lines. Similarly, from
Eng No. 7S.4664 (except Eng Nos. 7S.4560 to 7S.4621) there are black rubber hoses that friction fit to each
carburetor bypass valve - these all have yellow plastic identification sleeves - these hoses connect to other
rubber hoses with white plastic tees and travel across the engine, next to the Balance Pipe and Breather Pipe
and run to the Thermostatic Vacuum Valve.

Brass identification tags with stamped numbers, listed below in bold, should be secured under the head of
the front rear dash pot screw of each carburetor; the brass tag is the only external distinction between the
carburetors listed below. Other numbers (usually 3 digits) stamped on the tags are believed to be the
manufacturer’s batch codes or bench testing proof numbers.

performance differences are internal, having to do with the needles, enrichments devices, and the bypass
valves; this is the reason for the brass I.D. tags; to assure that the correct carburetor is fitted to the right
application (car), especially when multiple models are being assembled in the same factory.
3. Zenith Stromberg Brass I.D. Tag information from the following:
A. Appendix 1 - Applications List, Zenith Stromberg CD Carburettors Owners Workshop Manual by
Don Peers, Published by Haynes Publishing group 1976,1983,1984,1986
B. Stromberg Carburetter Application List found in Stromberg Carburetters - Serving Function Testing
by Interauto Book Company Ltd., 1973. Except 3630 & 3629 (perhaps a typo) are listed as 3530 &
3529
C. Burlen Fuel Systems web site, www.burlen.co.uk. Also lists 3630 & 3629 (perhaps a typo) as 3530 &
3529 - confirmation is requested
D. See page 227 of reference C for picture of brass I.D. Tag “3391A1”

complete plug change is required.” Therefore all cars are correct with Champion 10Y spark plugs, but
no deduction should be made for cars up to Eng. No. 7S.8100 having Champion 9Y plugs, lest we
violate the “as it left the factory rule”

COMMON MISSING OR NON AUTHENTIC ITEMS
Note: Judges should be aware of easily interchanged parts and insist the Entrant produce official Jaguar
publications for proof of authenticity. The burden of proof for authenticity is (very correctly) on the Entrant,
not the Judge.
Exterior:
Front License Plate Holder* missing
Phillips instead of correct Pozidriv® screws on lenses - Pozidriv® screws can be identified by “X” slash marks
Square corners on Air Scoop rather than correct rounded corners
Interior & Boot:
Wilton Wool Cut Pile Carpet instead of correct original Nylon Flocked Carpet*
Phillips® head screws instead of correct Pozidriv® screws
Owners Manual and Vinyl Pouch*
Sound Deadening material missing in boot
Engine Compartment:
American Bolts rather than original correct English Bolts
YCCC missing from items or too shiny
Hose Clamps - wrong application of or missing Oetiker, Cheney*, and low pressure hose clamps
Missing double coil spring washers under wing nuts on battery hold down “J” bolts
Phillips® head screws instead of correct Pozidriv® screws
Brass ID Tags* missing on Carburettors
Wrong Rain Shields, or too many fasteners (2-only) early 2-hex - late 1-hex (rear) & 1 Posidriv® (front),
or installed backwards
* indicates not currently made - if this guide somehow encourages the remanufacture of ACCURATE
reproductions of these items, I will be a very happy fellow ☺

APPENDIX A
6-CYLINDER SERIES 3 E-types per 1990 Jaguar Series 3 E-type JCNA AGM Seminar, page 2
The 6-cylinder Series 3 E-type is listed in the Jaguar catalog. However, it is believed that only six were
produced, two of which were experimental cars. At least one 6-cylinder car survives in England and two
were known to be in the United States. Chassis 1W700001, a FHC built in August of 1971 was last seen in
New Jersey. These models are not covered in this guide, and because they are so rare (including authenticity
documentation), it would be appropriate for these models to be entered in Special Division, Class 4, as
authenticity, which is not judged in Special Division, would be impossible for the average JCNA Judge to
know or Entrant to document.
*A WORD ABOUT YELLOW CHROMATE CONVERSION COATING (YCCC):
The following is from the Finishing.Com, Inc website, by Ted Mooney, P.E., in answer to a question posed
by a group of Ford enthusiasts documenting ’71 Ford 429 engines, “We have a gold appearing alternator
pulley. Three people have three descriptions - Gold Cad, Yellow Cad, and Yellow Dichromate. Perhaps a
photo chart would help us identify parts like this correctly with the right terms.”
Ted answers, “Cadmium plating almost always receives chromate conversion coating as a post treatment.
Whether the color of that coating is yellow vs. gold is arguable in every instance. Some people would call a
chromate yellow that you might call gold; others might call a chromate gold that you might call yellow. The
color difference can be subtle, and it can be accidental or deliberate.
On the next point, there is a chemical difference between chromate (Cr03) and dichromate (Cr2O4) but for
the most part the coating is called a chromate conversion coating regardless of the exact percentage of
chromate and dichromate in the coating.
So, a 'gold cad' is cadmium plating that has received a chromate conversion coating, which is, to the eye of
the beholder, gold in color. A 'yellow cad' is cadmium plating that has received a chromate conversion
coating that is, to the eye of the beholder, yellow in color. A yellow dichromate is actually an oxymoron
since chromate is yellow and dichromate is orange. Further, identifying the chromate finish without
identifying the metal is incomplete. A yellow dichromate may well also mean cadmium plating with yellow
chromate, but it could also mean zinc plating with a yellow chromate.
So it's not a matter of deciding which of the three coatings you have based on a color chart; it's a matter of
deciding what you are going to call this finish that consists of cadmium plating followed by a chromate
conversion coating. Good luck.”
The problem JCNA Judges have had with Jaguar YCCC items is similar, but deals with the degree of gloss
on the YCCC item. Gloss on any plated part, conversion coated or otherwise, is dependant on the gloss of
the base metal, if it shines (a result of polishing) the plating will shine, and likewise, if the plating shines the
YCCC will shine. Some JCNA Judges have seen YCCC items on restored Series 3 E-types with a gloss
equal to that found with chrome plating, surely the item never left the factory with that degree of gloss, so a
non-authentic deduction would be appropriate. On the other hand YCCC, unlike chrome plating, has a
tendency to dissipate with time, it’s like it evaporates, and so a non-authentic deduction should be taken
where only the base cadmium plating can be seen on an item known to have received the YCCC. Also,
YCCC cannot be polished; it will easily rub off if even gentle hand polishing is attempted. Variations in the
yellowness between one YCCC part and another are also acceptable, as that is the nature of YCCC. Keep in
mind that many of the YCCC parts were made by different vendors using differing YCCC specifications.
The range of acceptable YCCC should therefore lie between a satin finish and shiny, but not glossy.
On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being a dull, sand blasted finish and 10 being a shiny, highly reflective, chrome
finish, YCCC should fall between a 5 and an 8. If YCCC were paint, it would be flat to semi-gloss.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
PEOPLE:
I’d like to thank Mike Cook for researching the ending chassis numbers and providing copies of important
Service and Spares Bulletins from the Jaguar Cars Achieves, in Mahwah, NJ, for my direct inspection, and
George Camp, Chief Judge of the Jaguar Society of South Carolina, who also provided information from his
collection and who was always an email away when I needed someone to confirm a finding or direct me in
the right direction. Thanks also to my dear friend and fellow long time JOCO Judge, Bill Smith, for loaning
me (for over a year) his original copy of Richard Russ’ Jaguar V-12 E-type a Guide to Authenticity. Steve
Kennedy of the Rocky Mountain Jaguar Club contributed more than the pictures shown herein, he headed a
team that included: Stew Jones of the Jaguar Club of Southern New England, Larry Harris and Dana Brown
of the Jaguar Associates Group of San Francisco, Gary George of the Rocky Mountain Jaguar Club,
Sherman Taffel of the Nations Capitol Jaguar Owners Club, and Dan Watkins of the Jaguar Affiliates Group
of Michigan. Much of the teams work is included in the guide and the guide simply would not have been
written without their start. Bob Anderson of the San Diego Jaguar Club proof read and commented on the
first completed draft and my dear friend and fellow JOCO Judge Bill Williams suggested major formatting
changes at the last possible minute – only friends can do that.
