Precautions against Influenza Infectious diseases caused by pathogens such as influenza and noroviruses are common in the winter. Washing your hands, gargling, and wearing a mask are effective ways of preventing infection. Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after being out of the house and before meals. It is effective to gargle when you return home and in the morning and night. Masks retain humidity and can help prevent germs from spreading. Dry air is not good for your throat and nose, so pay attention to the indoor humidity level. It is a good idea to let in fresh air once every hour. You can also get an influenza vaccine. After you are vaccinated, it will take about four weeks for the vaccine to become effective. It is also important to try every day to keep yourself resistant to disease by living a healthy lifestyle. Please keep in good health in this winter. ●●Parents and children Fureai Concert Date & time: December 23 (1) 11 a.m. (2) 2:30 p.m. Place: Akasaka Civic Hall Admission fee: ¥1,800 for an adult and ¥900 for a child aged 3-year-old and over Please pay ¥324 per ticket for shipping and handling. New Year’s Holiday New Year’s Day is the most important holiday for Japanese. For a better coming year, most people clean up their house in December. Then they put out traditional decoration called kadomatsu made with mainly pine tree branches and bamboo in front of the house and hang a New Year’s wreath on the door. People decorate flower arrangement and kagamimochi in the room. Kagami-mochi is usually created with two round rice cakes and an orange. During the New Year’s holiday, people eat traditional food called osechi-ryori and zo-ni , mochi soup. Decades ago, women used to cook osechi-ryori in December and the family and visitors eat them during the holidays. A lot of foods are in a beautiful lunch box and each food has its own meaning. During the holidays, people like to go out, for example, to go to a shrine to pray the year’s luck, to see the first sun rise of the year, to visit their family, friends, relatives, etc. and to go the first day of shopping for the year. Especially kids love New Year’s holiday because they receive New Year’s allowance called otoshidama from adults. In the winter vacation, kids get Christmas presents in December and otoshidama in January. They must be very happy.
