Port! once again these f a m ous yelps are echoing t h r o u g h the halls of old P o r t H i g h . The J . V . cheerleading t r y o u t s are here again and 22 Junior s are hoping to be chosen for the 8 - g i r l squad. The judges of the contest were Mr. Seeber, M r . B r o w n , Miss Foehrenbach, Carol Carpenter, presdent of the G A A , and the captain of the present cheerleaders, Pat Haron. The g i r l s were rated on a scale of 25 points by each judge. Up to 5 points for each of the f o l l o w i n g were counted: Pep, j u m p , smoothness of movement, appearance, personality and poise. I t may be that the girls who did w e l l i n the practices made a poor showing at the tryouts , due to tension and nervousness. The final choices were announced soon a f t e r w a r d and an anxious crowd learned that D o r i n O l tarsh, Annabelle Sloane, C a r o l y n Gaita, Niba N a t a l o n i , Pat Cooper, Irene Rice, Randi Sontum, and Catherine M o n t o u r i , had been chosen for this honor. Port Light Staff Finishes Sketches As of Nov. 21, the l i t e r a r y staff of The Por t L i g h t had c o m pleted the senior class w r i t e ups, and these along w i t h the layout of the senior class pages were sent to M y r e s and Company of Topeka, Kansas to meet a December 1 deadline. The layout of the senior class pages was c o m pleted by Doug M u r r a y and M a r n i M c C a r t h y under the supervision of M y r n a H o r o w i t z and Janet Compere. The l i t e r a r y staff has also completed the w r i t i n g of the dedication. T h e i r next job w i l l be to w r i t e up the various a c t i v i ties of P o r t H i g h . The a r t staff w i l l be devoting itself to the preparation of the d i vision pages of the yearbook, w h i c h w i l l be completely a r t w o r k . They also must complete the f a c u l t y and a d m i n i s t r a t i o n , football, and hockey pages. These subjects w i l l take up the next t w e n t y pages of The Por t L i g h t and w i l l have to be ready to meet a J a n u a r y 15 deadline. Feature Candid Shots This year there w i l l be quite a few candid camera shots of the campus, students, f a c u l t y , and activities of Port H i g h . The candid shots are being taken by Carl D a h l . The business staff of The Port L i g h t is w o r k i n g on selling a d vertisements to the merchants (Continued on page 4) Janet was chosen student of the week because she is the n e w ly elected co-editor of The P o r t Weekly. Before she had been assistant editor and last year's copy editor. She is active i n many i m p o r t a n t school activities. A m o n g them are Port L i g h t , Retort, Circle and Celerity . She is the enthusiastic vice-president of Clio, capable secretary of L a t i n ' 4S Janet K u h l Club and president of Theater Group. Last year she was the r e presentative to the council f r o m homeroom 108. I n sports, v o l l e y ball and basketball lead her list of favorites. These activities and the e x cellent w o r k she does to m a i n t a i n her h i g h scholastic average w i l l hel.p her get i n t o the college of her choice, M i d d l e b u r y . P. P u m p h r e y O n Power's Show Last F r i d a y evening Preston P u m p h r e y appeared on the J i m my Powers "Powerhouse of Sports" Show at 6:45 on television station W P I X . The first portion of the program was devoted to a discussion between M r . Powers and three football coaches f r o m B r o w n U n i v e r s i t y . I n the second half of the show, Preston and a young boxer, E r n i e Jamaci, w h o w o n the Golden Gloves i n 1348 and 1949, were i n t e r v i e w e d by M r . Powers. He asked them whether they thought sports were being overemphasized i n schools and college. Preston said that he believes they are not, and mentioned our r u l i n g concerning e l i g i b i l i t y for a t h l e tics. M r . Powers also asked the boys about w h a t they p l a n n e d to do after h i g h school. PRICE TEN CENTS Sock Hop Set F o r December 15 O r a t o r i c a l Contest Presented Dec. 7 The local contest of the A n nual A m e r i c a n Legion O r a t o r i c a l Contest w i l l be held here i n a 10:30 assembly on F r i d a y , D e cember 7. The contest is sponsored by the A m e r i c a n Legion Post 509. The participants i n the local contest are Pam M o r i , B a r bara M i l l m a n , F r a n k H a r d i n g , Leonard Jacoby and William Cunningham. The w i n n e r of the local contest w i l l attend the sectional contest w h i c h w i l l be held the week of December 9. The v i c t o r of the sectional contest w i l l go on to the county contest w h i c h w i l l be conducted d u r i n g the week of J a n uary 13. The w i n n e r of the county contest will compete i n the eleventh district contest w h i c h w i l l be held at Mineola H i g h School on Wednesday, February 13. The eleventh distric t includes the counties of Queens, Nassau and Suffolk. The victor of the contest of the eleventh district continues on to the state c o mp e t i t i o n where the representatives of New Y o r k State i n the N a t i o n a l Contest w i l l be chosen. Port Delegates Go T o M S S C Meeting Last Tuesday, November 27, Port Washington H i g h School sent t w o delegates into C o l u m bia U n i v e r s i t y to attend a meeting of the M e t r o p o l i t a n School Study Council on h u m a n r e l a tions. Preston P u m p h r e y and Janet K u h l , the t w o delegates, participated in the meeting, w h i c h opened at ten o'clock w i t h coffee and doughnuts, and l a s t ed t h r o u g h t i l l three o'clock i n the afternoon. The m a i n p u r pose of the meeting was to p l a n for a " Y o u t h D a y " to be h e l d at Columbia sometime i n the spring. There were numerous other delegates representing other schools i n the m e t r o p o l i tan area also attending. A f t e r different group discussions i n the m o r n i n g , different topics for the spring meeting were decided on and plans were made for the afternoon. A special steering committee was set up to f u r t h e r c a r r y on the plans of the group. A t three o'clock the meeting was adjourned The committee on h u m a n r e lations was established to straighten out the differen t " t e n sion areas" i n the schools and i t is f e l t t h a t t h r o u g h these v a r ious meetings the schools w i l l be able to straighten out their o w n problems. R i v i e r a Band G.O. Christmas At Dance Come on out, kids, save on shoe leather and have a terrific time supporting your G. O. This year the G. O. has come up w i t h a snazzy idea of having its C h r i s tmas dance a sock hop. It's s t r i c t ly informal—informal?—whadydya mean i n f o r m a l — j u s t check your shoes at the door. T h e r e ' l l be the Aristcrats, a threepiece band i m p o r t e d f r o m the R i v i e r a , that plan to play a great v a r i e t y of music, t a k n i g o n l y short i n termissions. As always its g i r l ask boy, beginning at 8:30 and ending at 12:30. The price is v e r y reasonable, $1.25 w i t h G. O., $1.75 w i t h o u t . The entertainment promises to be v e r y l i v e l y w i t h prizes to be given for the b r i g h t est and most unusual socks. I f the t u r n o u t is as expected, t h e r e ' l l be a lot of dismayed mothers Sunday m o r n i n g of December 16 upon seeing d i r t y and w o r n - o u t socks of their off-springs as tfie only souvenirs of a terrific evening. The decorating committee is already w o r k i n g hard to b r i n g out the Christmas s p i r i t i n the decorations. The c h a i r m a n of this committee is Dee Dee Davis, w h i l e Sally Enscoe and J i m m y Roberts are superintending the Refreshment committee. Judy Neely and her committee w i l l soon fill the halls w i t h gay posters announcing the dance. Students J o i n I n All-State Festival November 16 and 17 were i m portant dates for fourteen music students f r o m Port H i g h . The a n nual Sectional A l l - S t a t e F e s t i val took place at L o n g Beach H i g h School. This affair consisted of about eight hours or r e hearsal for each of the chorus, band and orchestra d u r i n g the two days and then a concert Saturday n i g h t . H i g h school s t u dents f r o m t h i r t y - n i n e different high schools on Long Island were •picked to participate. A great credit to our school is that t w o of our first chair band members also held first chair i n the A l l - S t a t e band. They were Danny S m i t h , cornet; Louis Rowley, flute; and Teddy K u c z i n ski, t r u m p e t . I t was a w o n d e r f u l experience and a l l who attended enjoyed the h a r d w o r k as w e l l as the good music which resulted.
