bryce banner Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2016 Phone Numbers FROM THE ASSISTANT GM Main Office | 540-856-2121 It’s all about the dues, about the dues, about the dues……Here’s the scoop on this year’s changes. The Board has approved a modest 3% increase in dues and capital for 2017. Our Basic Family memberships (our highest cost plan) will pay less than $5 more per month. Members will still get a 5% discount for paying in full before November 30, which will save you more than the increase. Want some really good news? All activity pass prices will be LOWER this year, except the Adult Bike Pass which will stay the same at $180. Early purchasers will benefit the most from the cost reductions. Pay in full for a ski or golf pass by OCTOBER 31 and the cost is $550 (last year’s cost was $744.15). Wait until November, and the cost goes up to $600. Be a procrastinator and pay on or after December 1 and your cost for the same pass will be $650, still less than last year, but why wait and pay $100 more. Get your passes now! Similar cost savings apply to all ski, golf, and combo passes, including the extended family passes. The cost of the transferable Guest Pass has also been reduced, $950 if paid by October 31 and $1,050 if paid after December 1. This pass is still transferable and good for both golf and ski, but the pass cannot be used by anyone listed under your membership (you, spouse, or children under 22). The pass is for your guests only. Each membership will once again receive one free book of 5 coupons for either ski or golf with cart. However, this year you may only purchase one additional book of coupons for either ski ($250) or golf with cart ($195) for use by your guests only. You will still be able to purchase lift tickets or golf rounds at reduced member rates for yourself, family and guests. In addition to being a part of this wonderful Bryce family and continuing to protect our property values, you get the 5 free coupons and FREE access to Lake Laura and the sports complex, FREE scenic chair lift rides, FREE miniature golf, FREE tubing (some time restrictions apply), FREE use of the driving range, FREE reserved parking, discounts everywhere at the resort and charging privileges. Shortly you will be receiving your membership renewal paperwork. I certainly hope that you continue to see good value in your membership and that you will continue with us. While the new fiscal year does not start until November 1st, we REALLY appreciate you getting your renewals in to us as early as possible so that we can plan for the upcoming year. Similarly if you must resign please ensure that you do so in writing to me as soon as possible via my email, [email protected]. Continued on page 2 Bryce Banner | Page 1 BUT WAIT – THERE’S MORE. We are starting a new Member-Get-A-Member Campaign. If you (1) renew your own membership for fiscal year 2017, and (2) refer a new member who joins for fiscal year 2017 you get a $500 gift card that can be used anywhere on the resort (but not for dues, capital or outstanding balances). Yes, $500 and there is no limit to the number of gift cards you can earn, and we will gladly split the amount between you and the new member, or two referring members, if you wish. Yes, if you personally refer 10 new dues paying members, you can earn $5,000! Hurry, this campaign is scheduled to end on December 31, 2016. With summer coming to an end and school beginning, I hope you continue to get out here on weekends to enjoy what is probably my favorite time of year weather wise. We will keep the pool open (with no attendants) for members until the second weekend of September, golf is still beautiful well into October and the Bike Park will be open on weekends. The Express Grill will be open Fridays to Sundays only in September. The rest of the time your food and beverage needs can be met at the Copper Kettle. The teams are working hard on budgets and capital requests for our upcoming fiscal year that we believe will generate enough cash flow to keep up with the urgent needs we have. We’re trying to be reasonable and also looking towards new revenue streams to add significant support, while making adjustments to any areas where we feel it is possible to control costs. Also on the docket is preparation for the election of three new board members. The slate chosen by the nominating committee looks to be strong with solid representation. That slate has gone out via email, and is posted on the member website, along with hard copies located at the Member Services desk. More information on the Annual Meeting along with ballots, etc. will be sent out shortly. Just a reminder that our annual meeting, October 8, will start early this year at 10:00 am and will be held in the restaurant. We are preparing to host a First Bank corporate outing that will put some very nice October revenue on the books. Finally, I want to thank all the employees, the Board, our wonderful volunteers and the entire membership for your help and support over the past couple of months. You’ve made my transition into the role of acting general manager, and now assistant, a smooth one. I hope I’ve done some good for us all. I do love this place. - Sally BOD Candidate Meet & Greet / Q & A Friday, September 16 Restaurant 6pm Meet & Greet; 7pm Q&A Bryce Banner | Page 2 BOD CORNER | By Tom Fugate Greetings! I’m writing to you today to heighten awareness and celebrate one of the most important attributes of Bryce Resort and our very special culture. I am referring to a magnitude of effort and impact that is so important to Bryce Resort that without it, Bryce Resort would be, well, ordinary. I am talking about our Volunteerism. Each year, Bryce Resort Members volunteer several THOUSAND hours of their time, energy, and passion to support member and guest activities and resort operations. Members volunteer for a variety of reasons -- to share a skill or passion, to be more engaged in our resort community, to keep busy and feel needed, or simply because they were asked and want to be helpful. For all of our volunteers, I expect the common reason is because it feels good to give back to the community we all love. So, on behalf of the resort leadership, I want to congratulate and thank each one of you for freely and lovingly sharing your most precious resources with all of us. While I wish we had better ways of measuring the impact you all have had on our success, the numbers and statistics alone cannot convey the real story. This impact is not about cost savings. It is about nurturing and growing a sense of pride in community, commitment to its health and well-being, and our common love of Bryce Resort. The pride and joy reflected by our volunteers is seen by all and often highlighted by new members and returning guests as “the thing” that made them want to come back. Our beautiful golf course is largely supported by a volunteer force who spend at least 500 hours each year planting, weeding, watering flowers, building and repairing birdhouses and other features. Nearly all of the mowing is accomplished by volunteers. Three or four people spend 40-50 hours each week as Driving Range caretakers, greeting members and guests, collecting range balls, and so much more. Our Ski ambassador program is supported by 20-30 people every winter working up to 150 three-hour shifts greeting and helping transport members and guests and all their ski equipment between the parking lot and the slopes. Volunteers meet and provide tours of the resort to prospective and new members. Cleanup all around the resort including the walking trail around Lake Laura is accomplished by dedicated volunteers. Our regionally ranked ski team and hosting of our Southern Alpine Racing Association and collegiate races are all coordinated and manned by a volunteer force. The list goes on. Our Dog Park and Airport are maintained by volunteers. Scores of maintenance and repair projects around the resort including revitalization of the Putt-putt golf, trimming around sprinkler heads, trimming around tee markers, divot repair, and so much more. Special events are manned by large volunteer efforts and our Board of Directors and committee members all act in a volunteer capacity. I know there is more that is accomplished quietly behind the scenes by volunteers and to all of you, we are so grateful. I wonder, were it not for volunteers, what would our resort look like? What basic needs would go unmet? What opportunities to grow and learn, and thrive would be lost? Next time you see one of our volunteers, please take a moment to thank them. Sincerely, thank you. It starts with the Labor Day Golf Tournament, to be held Monday, September 5th with a 9 AM shotgun start. You can form your own teams or we will pair you. Your team will be given a "bag of tricks" on the day of the event. Don’t forget, this is the last qualifying event for both the Play 4 drawings and the Bryce Cup Shootout at the end of the season. on your favorite player(s). The same day, starting at 11 AM, we will have the VIP Tent set up on hole #9. There is no fundraiser this year; just a fun day with good food and plenty of drinks. The cost of VIP passes will be same as last year, $25, and can be charged to a member account. Passes can be purchased in the pro shop or contact Sally Montrey at sallymontrey@ aol.com. The winners of the Bryce Classic will also be decided this month with the final match being played sometime in the first two weeks. The Orkney Springs Fire and Rescue Tournament will be held on Friday, September 23rd with a 1 PM shotgun start. This fundraiser deserves your support for a very important group that serves and protects our resort year-round. Our newest tournament player incentive, Play 4, will reach its’ conclusion with the prize drawings being held Friday, September 16th at 6:00 PM in the Copper Kettle. The grand prize winner can play in any 4 qualifying tournaments of their choice next year and Bryce will pay their entry fees. Also, seven other lucky players will win gift cards prizes that can be used anywhere on the resort. Come down for a fun evening in the bar. The next day, Saturday, September 17th, the annual Bryce Cup Shootout takes place at 12 PM starting on the 1st tee box. We will have 12 players this year so along with their caddies and the gallery there will be quite a crowd. We hope you will come out to cheer Last, but definitely not least, the Big Pork Par 3 Shootout will have a 11 AM shotgun start on Saturday, September 24th. This invention of Dean’s evil twin has quickly become one of our most popular tournaments of the year. Get your tickets early. More details are forthcoming about all these events via emails and fliers in the next couple weeks. Contact the golf shop with any questions you have. Fall is almost here. This is the best time of the year to get out and play some golf on our beautiful course! ABOUT THE DEER | By Dean Freeman Many of you may have heard of the problem the deer are having in our area, and our hot, humid weather is partially to blame. Our deer are succumbing in fairly large numbers to a disease called Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD). Not to be confused with other types of Hemorrhagic Fevers which can be extremely dangerous to humans, EHD affects mainly deer, but can cause problems for ruminants (cud chewers) such as cattle and sheep if left untreated. EHD does not affect humans or their pets however, and contact with dead animals carrying the disease poses no threat of infection. In EHD’s other form, Chronic EHD, the disease typically causes poor health and often lameness in deer which can lead to death, however deer can survive Chronic EHD, where Acute EHD is almost always fatal. While EHD is not contagious (spread from deer to deer), it is most notably spread via the biting midge (Culicoides variipennis), but is also transmitted from other biting gnats and mosquitos. This is where the weather comes in… hot, humid, and wet weather creates perfect breeding conditions for biting insects whose larva typically develop in stagnant pools of water, something we’ve had in spades this summer. This overabundance of disease carrying insects is almost certainly why the incidence of EHD has become so high this summer. The only good news is that when frost kills off most of our biting insects this fall, the number of affected deer should drop close to zero. Deer suffering from Acute EHD will show a lack of fear of humans, swelling of the head, hemorrhaging of the skin, rapid pulse and respiration, and excessive salivation. The accompanying fever often causes affected deer to seek out a water source for comfort, which is why we are finding many of the overtaken deer in our lakes and streams. There is no need for alarm. EHD is very dangerous to deer but not to humans. Though it goes without saying that if you encounter any wild animal, living or dead; it’s best to leave it alone and put as much distance between the two of you as possible. Bryce Banner | Page 5 LEADER IN THE CLUBHOUSE | By Seth VanHall Autumn is quickly approaching and will bring with it some of the best golfing weather we'll see all year. As a bonus, with the setting at Bryce, we have a true fall destination golf course. I encourage you to promote our wonderful course at Bryce, along with the other mountain activities to anyone who may be looking for a weekend getaway this fall. This will be my first autumn season at Bryce and I cannot wait to see the beauty this season will bring to the mountain. On September 16, at 6:00 PM, in the Copper Kettle, we'll have the Bryce 4 Award Drawing and Saturday, September 17 at noon, the Bryce Cup Shootout to determine this year's Champion! I've added two new events, open to all golfers, to our late season schedule. On Saturday, October 22, we'll have the Bryce Tough Course Challenge - a two person best ball tournament and Friday, November 25, we'll host a Black Friday - two person scramble! Thank you for your continued support of the resort and we hope to see you on the golf course soon and often this fall. Fairways and Greens, Seth VanHall Bryder Cup participants had a great time! Bryce Banner | Page 6 CONCEDED PUTT | By Dean Freeman If you read my article with any regularity, you’ll be keenly aware of how much I desperately love September. If September were a girl, I’d leave my wife for her, seriously! Ok, she’s standing here so perhaps, I’ll tone it down just a bit. Anyway, September is not a girl and I’m not dumb enough to leave my wife so let’s just agree that I’m pretty happy when September rolls around. This month marks the end of summer. While I’m not too excited to see summer leave so soon, I’m very excited to see the heat and rain go somewhere else. This summer has been a real pill for those of us who maintain turf. Heat and water conspire to make so many bad things happen and boy did they happen this summer. Perhaps you’ve noticed more weeds, disease, mud, and general ickyness on the course lately? Whenever conditions stress the grass you want, the weeds you don’t want take over. Weeds love this type of weather as do insects. The high insect population is in large part responsible for the outbreak of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease which is killing higher than normal levels of deer. Look elsewhere in the Banner for an article I wrote regarding this problem. With all of this hopefully soon behind us, I can extoll my love for September, the bringer of frosty cool mornings and shorter days for yours truly. Perhaps now my new love will have time for a quick fishing trip. September always knows how to make me happy. I hope you enjoyed the show put on by our pavers recently. The bridge collapse on sixteen posed some fun challenges for us last month. Special thanks go to Ryan, Danny, Brad, Wayne, and Levi for coming over from property maintenance to help us with the heavy lifting. The bridge is all better now and a lot of hard work went into patching and seeding the soil around the pavement. Please drive carefully and do your best to stay off the newly seeded areas on sixteen. How nice to not have to drive over that horribly bumpy cart path anymore. As promised, Big Pork is back again this month. September 24th is the date so mark your calendar. We are very close to being full, so if you haven’t signed up, RUN to the pro-shop and get your registration form submitted! If you are too slow, we will put you on the waiting list which usually yields one or two that have to drop out, so there’s always a chance. If you can’t make the golf, don’t forget the ridiculously delicious pork feast which follows. A profoundly unfortunate hog will make an appearance to feed the hungry masses and everyone’s invited. Simply use the registration form and sign up as a booster and you’ll only pay for the food. This year we hope to have gifts and prizes totaling over $1,500 not to mention the best excuse for a hangover I’ve found yet. A huge corn-hole tournament follows with more cash prizes for the winners. Everyone is welcome so hurry up and save your spot at the Big Pork Par Three Shootout. I’ve been asked by more than a few of you why our rough is being torn up and what on earth is doing this. Well the short answer is Skunks and Foxes digging for grubs. The reason you’re seeing it now depends on a couple of factors, money and weather. Money because I cut way back on my chemical budget this season in order to try and help out with our severe budget shortfall. We simply attempted not to spray the grubs in all areas of the course and now we’re seeing the results. Weather is to blame as well because we did spray some of the areas but the excessive rainfall this summer greatly reduced the efficacy of the pesticide we used for the grubs, leaving us exposed without any control. The little grubs are a fat and juicy treat, full of nutrients. They are just below the surface eating grass roots in preparation for their winter hibernation deeper in the soil. While they are feeding topside, all a fox or skunk need to do is dig the already root bare plants up and expose the fat morsels below. Viola! Torn up golf course! We have since purchased more chemicals and sprayed the grubs. There’s no guarantee, but we’ll keep our hopes up that our plump little delicacies will either vacate the area or succumb to the control measures. Regardless, as soon as it cools down our corpulent little friends will seek the safety of deeper soil, so by the end of the month, Mr. Fox and Mr. Skunk will be forced to look elsewhere for their dinner.
