up on a language for your summer
holiday, learn how to arrange flowers

Craft courses
We offer a wide range of courses,
including drawing, painting, ceramics,
stained glass, textiles, quilting, upcycling
furniture and upholstery. Many of our
learners start as beginners and progress
throughout the year and are amazed at
how quickly they progress. You will have
the opportunity to learn techniques and
ideas, within a supportive and friendly
environment.
We also have a fantastic range of
jewellery making courses, from working
with silver, to beaded jewellery, to our
latest….polymer clay jewellery.
Some new courses for 2014 include:
NEW Create a piece of jewellery in a day
(with polymer clay)
Polymer clay allows the maker to create
pieces such as bracelets, necklaces
and pendants in a short time period and
with a number of different finishes, such
as ink and foil. The one- day workshop
is being held on Saturday 10 May, 10am
– 3.30pm, £35 (cost of clay an additional
£10), Highcrest Adult Learning Centre,

NEW Make and Market Craftware –
Upcycle your home
Learn how several modern craft
techniques and decorative finishing
touches can be used to upcycle and
update old everyday household items,
making something old into something new
and beautiful. Course starts Friday 2 May,

NEW Community Choir – Singing for
pleasure
Warm up your voice and learn how
to pitch the right note, harmonise and
project your voice. Learn songs from
popular musicals, sing and have a lot of

Foreign Languages
16 – 22 June
Adult Learners’ Week is held from
16 – 22 June and is a national celebration
of the benefits of lifelong learning.
It inspires thousands of people each
year to discover how learning can
change their lives.
From early May we will have a list of FREE taster courses on
our website.
If you attend a FREE taster session you will also receive an
email voucher entitling you to £5 off your first enrolment*
Whether you are learning a language for
the first time or want to improve existing
skills, we have a wide variety of language
courses from beginner to advanced levels.
If you going abroad and would like to learn the basics of a
language to help you to get by on holiday, we have planned
a range of short Get By For Your Holiday courses in Spanish,
Italian and French. These courses are designed to introduce you
to vocabulary and phrases appropriate to a small range of topics,
for example shopping and eating out. They will also give you an
insight into some aspects of the culture of the country.

If you are keen to experience a language at beginners level
and dip your toe in the water before learning further, why not
try one of our short Beginners 1 – Get Started courses? These
are designed to suit the needs of complete beginners who are
learning the language for the very first time.

If you would like to revive a language you have studied either
recently or in the past (however dim and distant that past may
be!) look out for our Refresh and Practise courses. These are for
learners who would like to refresh their ‘rusty’ language in order
to be able to communicate in a range of situations.

Traineeships
Traineeships prepare young people for their future careers by helping them to become ‘work ready’ and are ideal
for those who are motivated to get a job but may lack skills and experience. Traineeships offer work preparation
training, maths and English support and meaningful work experience. Developed alongside employers, Traineeships

Book Keeping
Level 1 Course
Family Learning courses are an ideal way
to get back into learning. They can lead
to improvements in your own skills, job
prospects and relationships with children.
This course covers double entry book
keeping up to trial balance.
We are running a new series of Family Learning courses
called ‘Helping with Homework’. Courses start in April and are
designed for parents, grandparents and carers of children at
primary school.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Payment of Fees
1. By enrolling on a course, you are agreeing to pay the total price for the whole course and annual registration fee, including all
outstanding balances, should you withdraw. This applies to all courses, including those funded by a 24+ Advanced Learning
Loan.
2. To secure your place, either full payment must be made at enrolment or the required deposit received and the completed direct
debit paperwork returned within ten working days (see paragraph 4 below).
Cheques should be made payable to “Buckinghamshire County Council”. A fee of £25 will be charged for dishonoured cheques.
3. Any additional costs for exam fees will be shown on the course information sheet. Certificates in relation to any exams passed
will only be provided once the full tuition and exam fees have been paid.
4. To help you spread the cost of your learning where the cost of your course is £120 or more, you may pay the balance of the fees
after an initial deposit has been taken, in instalments via direct debit. We will send you a direct debit mandate with your receipt
for the deposit and you will need to complete this and return it to our data team at the Evreham Centre within ten working days.
The following payment schedules will apply:
Courses less than 25 weeks – 25% deposit + three equal payments taken on the 15th of the following three months.
Courses more than 25 weeks - 34% deposit + two payments for 33% of the cost taken on 15 December and 15 March.
If the mandate is not returned within ten working days, the full fees become payable immediately. We will telephone you to
obtain a debit or credit card payment.

5. Where fee concessions are claimed, you will need to provide the necessary documentary evidence to demonstrate eligibility
for this fee reduction. Should this not be received within two weeks of the enrolment date, the full fees become payable. We will
contact you in order to obtain payment via debit or credit card.
6. Where there are outstanding fees, other than agreed future direct debit instalments, we may refuse entry to the class until such
fees have been paid.
7. Overseas learners - please note that learners who have not been living in the UK or EU residents who have not been living in the
EEA for at least three years, will need to pay the overseas student rate for any course which is £10 per hour.
Refunds/Transfers
8. If your chosen course is either cancelled or closed within the first three weeks, due to low numbers or other reasons, we will
refund your fees in full. Where courses are closed after the first three weeks, a pro-rata refund will be made to any student
attending at that time who has attended at least 80% of their sessions. We will endeavor to let you know as soon as possible and
any refund due will be made by crediting your credit/debit card or by cheque. It is not possible to make refunds in cash.
9. If you change your mind within five days of enrolling and before attending a session, we will refund your fee in full.
10. If, after one session, or two for language classes, you decide that the course is unsuitable and you notify us within 48 hours, we
will transfer you to another course of your choice. If you request any other change or transfer, we will charge an administration
fee of £20.
11. If you withdraw from a course, you will not be eligible for a refund. However, in exceptional circumstances and at our discretion,
we may be able to offer some credit against a future course. An administration fee of £20 will be charged.
12. It may occasionally be necessary, for reasons beyond the control of Buckinghamshire Adult Learning, to change the course tutor,
make slight changes to the timing or content of the programme, or move the course to an alternative venue within a reasonable
distance of the advertised venue. No refund will be given under these circumstances. Where a session is cancelled, for reasons
beyond the control of Buckinghamshire Adult Learning such as staff illness or extreme weather conditions, and a replacement
session is offered, no refund will be given.
13. If a class does not reach its minimum number, we may offer you the opportunity to reduce the number of weeks with no
corresponding reduction in fee, or we may increase the fee to the small group rate of £7 per hour as an alternative to closing
the class.

Course Fees
14. Course fees are based on reaching the minimum class number. For most of our courses this is nine. The class may be closed if
we do not recruit the minimum number.
15. Some courses may involve additional costs for materials. These will be outlined on the course information sheet you receive on
enrolment. Unless specifically stated, you are advised not to buy equipment, materials or books prior to the first session.
16. Please note, an annual £10 registration fee applies upon enrolment.
Data
17. The personal information you provide is passed to the Chief Executive of Skills Funding (“the Agency”) and, when needed,
the Department for Education, including the Education Funding Agency and the European Social Fund (ESF) to meet legal
responsibilities under the Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Act 2009, and for the Agency’s Learning Records Service
(LRS) to create and maintain a unique learner number (ULN). The information you provide may be shared with other partner
organisations for education, training and employment-related purposes, including for research. Further information about use
of and access to your personal data, and details of partner organisations are available at www.skillsfundingagency.bis.gov.uk/

18. All new learners will be allocated a Unique Learner Number (ULN). This ULN is the education equivalent of a national insurance
number and is used for life. ULNs are issued to most learners from age 14 and they are used in schools, further and higher
education, and particularly when entering exams or accessing the National Careers Service.
Attendance
19. If you do not hear from us to the contrary, please assume that your course will be running.
20. Under the terms of our Student Charter, all learners are required to be punctual for their class and to attend regularly. If you are
unable to attend a session, please let us know.
General
21. All learners are required to sign a learning agreement at the beginning of their course.
22. All learners are required to show respect for staff and other learners and to behave responsibly and safely at all times.
23. We are unable to accept responsibility for any damage to or loss of student property (including motor vehicles) or work.

Certain courses are free of charge if you meet certain eligibility
requirements. We only require you to provide original proof of
benefit and to sign a statement to confirm this. Our accredited
course codes end in the letter ‘F’. Learners who want to apply for
help need to complete and sign an ‘LSF’ form, which is available
from any Adult Learning Centre or by calling 0845 045 4040.
If you would be unable to access or complete your accredited
learning programme because of financial considerations, we
may be able to offer financial help towards tuition and exam fees
and other associated costs, such as travel, childcare, annual
registration fee and materials.
For students aged 16-18 in full-time education their area of study
must be different to that of their full time course.
We can also offer a discount of 50% off the tuition fees for
courses ending in ‘A’, as set out in the table above.
To be eligible students must have been ordinarily resident in
the UK or EU for the past three years, or be a partner or close
relative of someone who meets the residency rules.
Funds available to support tuition and other costs are limited;
applicants should not assume they will receive funding until it
is confirmed.
They also need to have signed authorisation from their school or
college in confirmation and to signify approval.
Please note: Details are subject to change in response to
Government guidance.
Non-UK or EU learners will be charged £10 per hour overseas
rate.

how much are courses?
Most maths and English courses are free if English is your first
language (depending on UK residency). There is a fee for ESOL
(English Speakers of Other Languages) courses of £3.20 per hour
if you are from the UK or European Union, you have lived in the
UK for three years or you are married to a British or EU Citizen.
Courses are £10 per hour if you do not fit into any of the groups
above and a cost of £40 applies for examination fees. However
you may be entitled to help with course fees if you receive
certain means-tested benefits. For help with fee information,

How will I find a course that is right for me?
We work with learners of all abilities - from beginners (Pre-Entry)
to Level 2 (GCSE). We ask you to come and see us before starting
a course as this helps us to make sure the course is right for you.
