Course description: This intensive Nahuatl Language and Codex Institute will be held in the ancient Nahua altepetl of Cholula and in a number of local Nahua communities. It will include instruction innovatively covering both colonial and modern Nahuatl as well as pictorial manuscripts at the beginning and intermediate/advanced levels. Previously unstudied colonial alphabetic and pictorial documents from this region, known for its rich Nahua heritage, will be examined during the course. Students will have class seven and one-‐half hours per day, Monday through Friday for two weeks (ten class days total). This will consist of: 1. (2.5 hours) Modern Huastecan Nahuatl immersion taught by Delfina de la Cruz de la Cruz, Sabina Cruz de la Cruz, Ofelia Cruz Morales, Catalina Cruz de la Cruz, Eduardo de la Cruz Cruz and Abelardo de la Cruz de la Cruz at the beginning or intermediate/advanced level; with elements of modern Nahuatl from the Puebla region. 2. (2.5 hours) Classical Nahuatl taught by Dr. John Sullivan (Yale University, Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas, University of Warsaw) and Dr. Justyna Olko (University of Warsaw) at the beginning or intermediate/advanced level; 3. (2.5 hours) Codex workshop taught by Dr. Miguel Ángel Ruz Barrio (Colegio Mexiquense) and Dr. Justyna Olko (University of Warsaw) at the beginning or intermediate/advanced level. Course objectives: The course seeks to: 1) develop students' oral comprehension, speaking, reading, writing and knowledge of language structure, as well as their cultural wisdom and sensibility, in order to facilitate their ability to communicate effectively, correctly and creatively in everyday situations; 2) provide students with instruments and experiences that demonstrate the continuity between past and present Nahua culture, through the study of colonial and modern texts, codices and conversation with native speaking instructors and with representatives of collaborating Nahua communities from the Cholula region; 3) penetrate into the historical, economic, political, social and cultural aspects of Nahua civilization; Daily Schedule (Monday through Friday): 8:30-‐11:00 Modern Huastecan Nahuatl (Beginning and Intermediate/Advanced) 11:00-‐11:30 Break 11:30-‐14:00 Beginning Classical Nahuatl 14:00-‐15:00 Lunch 15:00-‐17:30 Intermediate/Advanced Classical Nahuatl 17:30-‐18:00 Break 18:00-‐20:30 Codex Workshop (Beginning and Intermediate/Advanced) Course materials: All students must have personal copies of the following text: Molina, Alonso de. 2008(1555-‐1571). Students may purchase this book directly from Editorial Porrúa or through IDIEZ. ***One week before class begins students will be sent, free of charge, electronic copies of the exercise manuals, grammar charts, vocabulary lists, manuscripts and codex fragments which will be studied. Course setting and complementary activities: The Institute offers its participants the unique experience of combining innovative instruction in language and culture with the living and historical landscape of an ancient Nahua region: young native speakers from collaborating Nahua towns will participate in the course activities; students and local collaborators will explore local historical documents (the codex at the Nealtican archive) and historical (the ex-‐convento, churches and Casa del Gobernador Indio en Cholula) and archaeological sites together. The weekend of January 11 and 12 students will visit the Nahua towns of Cuautlancingo, Tlaxcalancingo, San Francisco Acatepec, Tonanzintla, Huaquechula, Huiluco and Zoyatla. Interdialectical Encounter: The weekend of January 18-‐19, IDIEZ will host in Cholula its second Interdialectical Encounter with participation of native speakers of many different variants of Nahuatl from all over Mexico.
