This Annual Report of Giving reflects the commitment of our friends and alumni to the students
and faculty of Vancouver Island University. By investing in VIU, the generous donors included in this
report acknowledge the value and significance to the community of the University and our students.
I can guarantee you that your investment is an effective one. Each and every day, I meet students
who have come to VIU to Explore, Discover and Excel. They come from all walks of life: from
wealthy and impoverished homes; from single parent and multi-generational families; from myriad
ethnic backgrounds and cultures; and from an array of religious traditions. As different as they may
be, they share an enthusiasm for learning and an appetite to seek challenges both inside and outside
the classroom. They see the doors that a VIU education can open and appreciate the opportunities
that lie beyond. For many of them, these doors could not be opened without your generous support.
As the portion of taxed based funding in our
aggregate budget declines and as we transition
from a university-college to a full-fledged
university, we recognize even more the need
for significant and continued private financial
support. Your contributions, regardless of size
or purpose, enhance the educational
experience of our students and improve the
excellence of our programs, facilities and
services. Every gift matters and every gift
moves us forward in our quest for excellence

In January, Nanaimo philanthropists Sidney
and Gladys Sharman made the single largest
donation to the University in its history. Their
$1 million gift will support full scholarships for
fourth-year students in the Bachelor of Science
in Nursing program.
“I know we need doctors and surgeons,”
Sharman said, “but when you're in the hospital,
it's the nurses you see. They're on the front line.
I want to support the VIU nursing program and
nurses in the Nanaimo area.”

VIU Alumni Mean Business
The Nanaimo branch of accounting firm
Meyers Norris Penny has established the MNP
Nanaimo Founders Award with a $40,000
endowment fund to VIU. The gift will be given
annually to a student in the Bachelor of
Business Administration program.
“We are very proud to provide this award
and recognize the high quality of work of VIU
grads,” said Lucie Gosselin, MNP Nanaimo's
managing partner. “We employ graduates at
all of MNP's Vancouver Island locations.”

New Shellfish Centre in Deep Bay
In Baynes Sound, across from Denman
Island, VIU is building a Deep Bay Field
Station, a fisheries and aquaculture research
facility that is an offshoot of VIU's Centre for
Shellfish Research.
The multi-use, environmentally-friendly
facility will be a resource for student

VIU to Host Major International Sturgeon Symposium
VIU has been tapped by the World Sturgeon
Conservation Society to host the 7th International
Symposium on Sturgeon in 2013.
A joint proposal by VIU, the City of Nanaimo and the
Vancouver Island Conference Centre won the bid to
host more than 700 international sturgeon scientists.
They will exchange research on sturgeon biology and
conservation in an effort to reverse the declining
numbers of sturgeon stocks around the world.
“This symposium will put VIU's International Centre
for Sturgeon Studies on the world map,” said VIU
fisheries and aquaculture instructor Gordon Edmondson.

Aboriginal Gathering Place Taking Shape on Campus
The newest building on the VIU campus will be
a “home away from home” for VIU's growing
Aboriginal student population.
“The Gathering Place will reflect and celebrate
Aboriginal culture and traditions,” said Dan
Lines, associate dean of Trades and Applied
Technology and a member of the Tsimshian
Nation. “It will be a centre for learning,
celebrating and enjoying cultural activities.”
Support for the Gathering Place comes from
the federal and provincial governments as well
as generous donors in the Nanaimo region. The
building is scheduled to open in 2010.
