BARC - Design Specification Manual
Visual Identity design for BARC
BARC held a competition for the design
of their logo and invited entries from
their employees. We were approached for
guidance on choosing the winning entry.
They shortlisted three finalists amongst
thousand entries they had received and
presented those to us.
About the shortlisted entries
We found that all the entries were
approached from the point of view of
creating a symbol. This is a common mistake
made while creating an identity. Designers
assumes that when a visual mark is created,
identity design task is over. None of the
chosen entires had a central theme aorund
which an all-encompassing visual language
could have been explored.
Our point of view
We appreciated the effort put in by the
employees , but requested BARC to revist
the excercise of visual identity creation in a
professional manner. They agreed and we
were commisioned for the job of creating the
design specification Manual for BARC.

Visual clues were derived from each keyword of the phrase. A visual survey of all exisiting nuclear companies logo and symbols in India and around the world were studied.
This excercise helps BARC position themsleves as a Brand and identify key difference the visual strategy should adopt. Visual similarity amongst the existing logos is an issue of utmost care and concern.

Constellation Pro (bold)was chosen for its
cripsness, the professionalism it potrays
through the rendering of its precise curves,
it's intricate craft and sensitivity towards
formalism. The chosen font is an expression
of the institution’s character and reflects
its values. It has a distinctive modernistic
appearance. This typeface should be used
for all communications.
Constellation Pro (regular) and (medium)
should be used as a secondary typeface for
all communications designed and published
for Print communications.

Logotype typeface.
A devnagari typeface complementing
the Roman typeface, ConstellationTLPro
was designed. A vector version (outline of
the logotype in Devnagiri) is provided as
a digital file.
Body text typeface.
When a devnagiri running type face has to
be used for communication in Hindi, use
the Unicode font Kohinoor Devnagiri. Three
weights of Kohinoor devnagiri Bold, Medium
and Book are available for use.

Design Philosophy:
The logo is designed based on the motto
of BARC, that is ''Atoms in the Service of
the Nation''. This is the core around which
research activities of BARC revolve.

Corporate Mark
The logo of BARC can be enlarged and reduced
in size as required. Logo should be used at a specific
size which does not compromise quality and legibility.
Logo Symbol not be reduced to more than
35mm x 20mm.
The circular shape of the logo represents an
ever-evolving dynamic continuum. The blue
colour of the BARC Logo comes from the
blue colour of Ashoka Chakra in the National
Flag. The logotype uses simple modern
and unique typeface to equate the visual
attributes that emerge from atoms and
orbits. The devnagiri typeface was specially
designed and adapts to the visual grammar
of the Roman typeface.
The top portion of the logo depicts
the atomic orbitals, comprising the basic
structure of an atom. The semi circle in the
centre of the orbitals represents the nucleus,
the core of the atom. The overlapping
structure of the orbitals is a graphical
representation of the Sun at the centre
as an abundant source of Energy and the
interconnected orbitals symbolising the
multifaceted and multidisciplinary nature
of R&D programs at BARC.
The bold abbreviation BARC at the
bottom of the logo depicts the unique
position of BARC as a premier Research
and Development Centre in India.

The logo is available in different configurations to use a wide range of applications. Each configuration should be treated as a one unit, the proportion and spacing of elements should not be changed at all. Codes (for e.g. A11) are artwork codes.

The BARC logo (signature) was approved by Chairman BARC.
It was launched as the new Corporate signature of the organization
by Director BARC on 10 August, 2012 in an inaugral function to all
the employees of BARC at Trombay in their campus.
