SCANWELL LOGISTICS – OCEAN FREIGHT
SCANWELL LOGISTICS – OCEAN FREIGHT OCEAN FREIGHT LOGISTICS Scanwell entered the Ocean Freight Industry more than 20 years ago at the request of several of our current customers who had to look elsewhere, due in large part, because Scanwell wasn't a licensed N.V.O.C.C. As a result, in April of 1984, Scanwell received their N.V.O.C.C. license and quickly evolved into a legitimate powerhouse within the Ocean Freight Industry, which still stands true today. Although we don't own our own vessels, Scanwell enjoys leveraged pricing based on our yearly import volumes and long standing preferred relationships with all Ocean Carriers. (See list) Scanwell currently imports more than 90,000 containers per year from the Far East to the United States and an additional 20,000 to other various points throughout the globe such as South America, Europe, Africa and Australia. Due to the large number of imports Scanwell controls, we have the ability of running extensive consolidation programs, as well as handle LCL freight from various locations within the Far East such as Shanghai, Hong Kong, Kaohsuing and many others. Along with our FCL and LCL ocean programs, Scanwell has the ability to offer more value added services than most forwarders today. These value added services include Internet tracking and tracing, EDI, VMI and SCM/WMS report, our patented Heavy Lift Programs and Warehousing both at the origin or destination and exports from the USA. This is based on the fact that import volumes have increased by more than 1000 times that of the same era. Ships in 1950 moved anywhere from 500 to 800 TEU's versus more than 8000 for the newest vessels. Over the past 40 years, the speed and size of the boats have increased making the trip from China to the United States in less than 2 weeks versus the 4 – 5 weeks it took back in 1960. This is caused by further advancement in ship building and engineering, stronger engines and increased port capacity. OCEAN CONTAINER EQUIPMENT 20'FT STANDARD 40'FT STANDARD & HC 45'FT HIGH CUBE (HC) ABOVE ARE THE MOST COMMONLY USED OCEAN CONTAINERS. THESE CONTAINERS ARE READLITY AVAILABLE THROUGH THE PACIFIC RIM. AS THE CONTAINERS INCREASE IS SIZE THE LESS ABUNDANT THEY BECOME. AS AN EXAMPLE, THERE ARE FAR MORE 20'FT CONTAINERS THAN THAT OF 40'FT AND 45 FOOT CONTAINERS. BELOW IS A SAMPLE OF SPECIALIZED CONTAINERS OR EQUIPMENT. THESE RANGE IN SIZE AND AVAILABILITY ON THE REGION OF EXPORT. RATES TYPICALLY ARE MUCH HIGHER THAN STANDARD EQUIPMENT AND OFTEN AT TIMES THE CONSIGNEE WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR REPOSITIONING CHARGES TO GET THE QUIPMENT FROM ONE CITY TO THE NEXT. The consignee doesn’t have any other shipments pending to combine with this shipment to complete a full container. To avoid lengthy and costly storage charges the consignee elects to ship this shipment via Scanwell's simple LCL consolidation program. SCANWELL BREAKS DOWN CONTAINER, PER SHIPMENT AND DELIVERS IT TO IT’S FINAL DESTINATION SUPPLIER (A) COMPLETES LCL SHIPMENT AND GIVES THAT SHIPMENT TO SCANWELL LOGISTICS (SHA) SCANWELL ACCEPTS FREIGHT, LOADS IT INTO SCANWELL'S CONSOLIDATION CONTAINER, COMBINING MULTIPLE VENDOR SHIPMENTS WITH THE CONSIGNEE AND SENDS TO DESTINATION CFS STATION. SCANWELL FULFILLMENT WAREHOUSE / LCL SHIPMENT CONSOLIDATION Case Study #2: There are four suppliers which have four shipments going to four different destinations all ready at the same time. Scanwell can combine all four shipments into one full container, send the container to a central breakdown facility or consignees distribution center in the states, segregate the container per shipment, per destination and route the shipments to their actual final destination. This increases productivity, reduces costs and eliminates any storage issues. Other services typically combined in this service is inventory control, WMS,VMI, pick and pack, bar coding and customs brokerage. When dealing with FCL freight this technique is important in knowing how much of your clients product will fit into a particular ocean container (see below). Special note: 1 cubic meter is equal to 1000 kilos unless except via in-land points where a LCL shipment is equal to 363 kilos. Okay, Shipment 1 consists of 5 pieces with dimensions of 36"x36"x50" and weighs 500 kilos, please calculate the dimension weight. Step #1: 5 x 36 x 36 x 50 = 324,000 cubic inches Step #2: 324,000 % 1728 = 187.50 cubic feet Step #3: 187.50 % 35.3145 = 5.309 cubic meters LCL freight is measured in cubic meters therefore you have 5.309 Cubic meters or 5309 Kilos volume weight.
