4 JULY 2013 JULY 2013 5 JULY 2013 7 07 - Cook’s Bike Blessing 08 - CVO road test By Lisa Dalgaard Something I’ve always liked is this idea of blessing your bike. The electric horse that becomes part of you on a ride is given the blessing to treat you with love and care. It’s a calling to the big guy upstairs that say’s “Hey, I am doing something very dangerous, please keep an eye on me.” It’s unique to this sport and has become a real happening within the motorcycle community. Priests attend local events where they bless bikes and riders and it’s a big event with food, a band, etc. Cook’s Corner in Orange County, CA. had their 13th annual on Sunday, May 5th. Rhonda Palmeri, manager at Cook’s, says it’s one of her favorite events. The proceeds go to the Second Harvest Food Bank and the party goes on all day. Starting at 9am with a Blessing by Father James of St. Michael’s Abbey Church in Trabuco Canyon, and continues throughout the day. This is not a traditional Catholic blessing. It’s a biker style blessing, with two bands performing - 3rd Rail and Sling Shot. There was a BBQ, Raffle the Jack Daniels Girls were even there. 13 - semper fi fund ride 14 - rolling thunder 19 - mt. soledad blessing 20 - flags for our fallen 23 - hot rod’s garage 24 - ms ride 26 - ride & event calendar 33 - the diaper run 37 - ride, strive and roll 39 - weekly events 40 - thunder on the lot 44 - miap Bikers all around the world have caught on to this great tradition and this year, in celebration of their 110th Anniversary, Harley-Davidson took it right to the mecca of blessings, Vatican City, Rome, Italy. Tens of thousands of Harley riders converged upon the Vatican City filling Via della Conciliazione, which stretches from St. Peter’s Square to the Tiber River, with their motorcycles. On June 16th, Father’s Day, the Father of Catholicism, Pope Francis blessed thousands of motorcycles for their safe travels. There to commemorate the moment was renowned Harley artist, David Uhl. David presented Pope Francis with one of his canvas Giclee prints. “Change Encounter” depicts priests checking out a 1948 HarleyDavidson FL Panhead motorcycle in Vatican City. That same artwork also appears on the cover of Quick Throttle Magazine this month. You can buy your own piece of history from David Uhl at www.QuickThrottle.com ON THE COVER “Chance Encounter” By David Uhl. Custom Vehicle Operations pulls out all the stops once a year and a select few models get the star treatment. It’s the stuff dreams are made of. I rolled out to Huntington Beach to shoot this beauty with photographer extraordinaire Ron Sinoy. He’s photographed dreams that have graced the pages of QT over the last 6 years. On a leisurely Sunday ride my lady and I hit Main Street and parked in front of Coaches Deli for a few photos. “Nice 2013 Road Glide CVO custom” barked a rugged sandy haired man lunching with his girlfriend outside. “Yes, that it is, its Harley’s most expensive motorcycle, over 30K” I reply. “Actually, he confidently retorts, its 32,999.00 and that’s before tax, license, freight and California emissions, oh yeah and the tour pack is an optional accessory”. Who the hell is this guy? “Harley only makes 2000 of these a year” I say nonchalantly, testing his resolve. “Actually, 1485 and it could be years before Harley offers a CVO Road Glide again”. This man has my attention. Enter Thomas Corey. Turns out I was sitting on his motorcycle, not literally but figuratively. This was the motorcycle Thomas had been gloating over, poring over each and every detail on HarleyDavison.com. He even had the HD CVO catalog open to the very image of this bike in his living room at home and read and re-read it again and again. He knew every minor detail; he knew 10 more about this motorcycle than me and this very one was his color, Roman Gold and Burnt Emerald with Edge Graphics. “I’ve never seen it in real life” Tom purrs as he prowls around the beast, examining every detail. “I saw one at Cooks Corner a few months ago but it was Diamond Dust and Obsidian with Palladium Graphics, this one is the color I’m getting” Somehow I believe Thomas. He seems like a regular guy, real friendly, no airs. I envision owners of Harley’s most expensive prize draped in 2 thousand dollars worth of brand new Harley leathers, smoking cigars while sipping brandy at the Ritz Carleton Laguna Nigel. “I’ve wasted a whole lot more money than 33K .” Tom states, and he has a point. “I own three bikes right now, if I sold them all I could pay cash.” He has another good point. He waltzes me over to a stunning 2001 blue and white Road King that looks brand new; this man takes care of his motorcycles. He also has a 2001 Heritage Softail and a custom Chopper, all purchased from Junior at Lifestyle Cycles in Anaheim Ca. A retired heavy equipment operator, Thomas Corey is making a damn good case for regular guys actually owning such an extraordinary motorcycle. There are a few left around the country and he knows exactly where they are; he just needs to pull the trigger. I offer to sell him this one for 20 grand cold cash. Unfortunately filing off the VIN on a bike this unique just won’t cut it. Custom is the Twin Cam 110 V-Twin and the Screamin’ Eagle Heavy Breather intake. It’s got a healthy 4-inch bore teamed to a 4.38-inch stroke generating 122 lb-ft of torque within the granitecolored heads. The cooling fin tips have been machined and contrast well with the gloss black rocker covers and Harley has overall maintained an attractive balance between black and chrome in the engine department. The tank console has a light-up Harley medallion located in the top-center portion. The gas cap sits flush to the tank and deploys with a simple push down on the cap. The two-tone paint scheme started in the front fairing is carried over on the tank and is also teamed with the Willie G Harley skull emblem, designed by the venerable Willie G. The diamond-patterned leather seat is wide in the middle before tapering off to the passenger pillion which pops off easily for solo action. As Thomas said, the rear seat Tour Pac and passenger back rest are optional accessories, but what Mama wants, Mama gets. adjustable for preload but requires removal of the saddlebag. The front is anchored by a 41.3mm fork that does a splendid job of keeping the tire on the road. With a fairly low center of gravity thanks to a 26.6-inch seat height and a 64-inch spread between wheels and you’ve got a bike with surprisingly good handling for a bagger. Thanks to rider floorboards that are placed up and out of the way there 30 degrees of lean angle. With a dry weight of 817 pounds the Brembo 300mm dual floating rotors on the front are squeezed by four-piston fixed calipers. At the lever you can feel the pads biting into the discs with a modest pull and ample stopping power is applied. The fixed 300mm rear also has a 32mm fixed fourpiston caliper and again grips tight. Grab a handful and you’ll activate the standard ABS which still delivers a strong pulse to the rider’s foot. “You finance it man, Thomas proclaims, just like your motor home or backyard family pool, if it’s your dream, live it, you only get to ride the big blue ball once.” Dude, I’m sold, where do I sign? The CVO Road Glide Custom upgrades to a Showa adjustable rear shock in place of the standard air shock. An air valve located between the left saddlebag and rear fender is hand- The heart and soul of the CVO Road Glide JULY 2013 JULY 2013 On the list of new features on the 2013 CVO Road Glide Custom is a hydraulic nine-plate wet clutch with a high performance assist and slip design. The new “Assist & Slip Clutch Pack” makes for light action at the clutch lever and it’s designed for longer wear. The clutch engages early in the release of the lever and helps keep the heavy motorcycle manageable at lower speeds. I have been known to bitch about the twitchy nature of the CVO 110 and tranny but this bike felt silky smooth. Somewhere along the line, they’ve tweaked it for the better. Another feature of the CVO Glide is its Engine Idle Temperature Management System (EITMS). This helps cut down the inner thigh-roasting heat coming off Harley’s V-Twin by cutting fuel and fire to the rear cylinder when idling. It can be turned off and on by the rider at a full stop. All that’s required of the rider is to rotate the throttle in a clockwise position all the way to a stop and as it bumps the cruise switch, it essentially stops the burn in the cylinder and reduces heat transfer to the rider. EITMS will activate once the engine temperature exceeds 284-degrees Fahrenheit. The CVO Road Glide Custom LED headlamp is awesome, called the Daymaker. It blows away conventional headlights as you knew them. “WARNING Shameless self promotion” I am the Midnight Rider, I just released a book about motorcycling at night (See Midnight Rider on a Graveyard Run, on Amazon) These headlights are a night riding game changer. According to the numbers Harley provided, the Daymaker distance is boosted 30 feet over halogen lamps, increasing from 315 feet to 345. Spread gets even better gains in the form of a 55-foot wider spread pattern, jumping up to 120 feet over the standard 65-foot measurement. Harley achieved this while reducing power consumption by a claimed 50%. After riding at night on this bike I will now proclaim loud and clear that Daymaker headlights should be on every touring Harley. Thomas calls some friends to come down and see “His Motorcycle” and his buddies get to sit on his bike. We talk bikes and riding as Ron shoots away. We listen to 110 decibels of Van Halen and the 110 c.i. V-Twin roar and purr of the custom 11 dual exhausts and ogle the halogen headlight. Man this CVO sound system delivers. Harley added another 200-watt amp, giving it two total. Six speakers connected to a Harman/Kardon sound system have both boom and clarity. Two 5x7 speakers with bridged tweeters audibly assault you from the front while two-way, 5x7 MTX saddlebag speakers hit you from the rear. It has an iPod cable in the right saddlebag that can be controlled via hand controls. It even comes with a special Harley-Davidson 8GB iPod Nano. For me, a professional Motojournalist, this is a dream come true. To roll into town and find the one guy on this small corner of planet earth that really, really gets it. And thanks to Thomas I get it now - CVO isn’t all about being mega wealthy, its about real motorcyclists who are truly passionate about what they do. They are already riders living the dream, only they dream big. That ultimate road, the ALCAN to Alaska, riding the Great Divide or just touring America. And they dream of riding it on the ultimate motorcycle and there it was, in 3D, in living color. The list of CVO extras goes on, these include a HarleyDavidson Smart Security System, 12 a commemorative CVO ignition key with display box, an indoor/ outdoor motorcycle storage cover with embroidered CVO logo, and a customer care package comprised of a tool kit, microfiber detail cloth, and an H-D jiffy stand coaster... along with a two-year, unlimited mileage warranty. Amidst all this glitz and glitter, what I think Thomas Corey sees is that dreams can come true. All the ride free and live to ride clichés aside I think he knows that cool cant be bought, it has to come from within. Cool takes fortitude, courage to take a chance and roll with it. As Tom says, you only get to ride the blue ball once. This is not just any man’s motorcycle; this is not for the faint of heart. This is as good as it gets, this truly is the stuff dreams are made of. JULY 2013 JULY 2013 13 Story and photos by Ray Seidel Saturday, May 18th the Brotherhood of Marine Riders gathered at The Chopper Gallery, 28860 Old Town Front St, Temecula, to participate in the Injured Marines Semper Fi Fund. This was actually a Hot Rod and motorcycle rally, and for only $20 included Poker Run entry, BBQ lunch, and live entertainment. The goal of the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund is to alleviate the financial burden placed on the family so that their focus can be on the recovery of their Marine. On display at Chopper Gallery was the raffle bike, a custom Harley in matte black so dark even light cannot escape. And a couple of custom cars. Chopper Gallery had the refreshments out, and if anyone needed, on hand is a lady who can sew patches on your leathers. End of the ride was Wild West Arena in Winchester. Riders found several vendors to pick through, and at the entrance was the “dunk tank” with a number of girls being a good sport at taking turns to get their T-shirts soaking wet. Beyond the entrance was parking for the classic cars and hot rods. Inside the gate the auction had some really good values for bidders. Color guard, food, bar, plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Can’t go wrong with the three “B’s”: bikes, babes, and beer. Also, making the trip from Hollywood were a couple of cast members from SONS OF ANARCHY: Christopher Reed “Filthy Phil” and Kurt Yeager “Greg the Peg.” Harley-Davidson loaned Chris a bike for the ride down, while Kurt came in on his Ducati. Both guys were in the mix of the crowd, so no problem just going up and talking to either one of them. I spoke to the VP of the Brotherhood of Marine Riders, active duty Staff Sergeant Steve Anderson – road name “Yak” – for some background. “We started this in 2005, and we’re hoping for a huge one next year for the 10th anniversary. 100% of the proceeds go to the Semper Fi Fund – injured Marines. Bottom line, there’s probably 20 of us that make this happen, or less…the guys that are local Temecula, San Diego, LA. We all get together to sell raffle tickets to flippin’ burgers, the whole deal. This year 300 – 400 signed up. After costs of the run we’ll probably donate between $12 – 15,000. This year will put us over $100,000 over the last nine years. It’s a good deal, and we’ll definitely do it again next year, and the next year, and the year after. This is the 4th year in a row at the Wild West arena because we outgrew our other venues. When we started we had between 50 to 125 showing up, now we’re in the HUNDREDS. We have a couple of cast members from SONS OF ANARCHY here, and one of the beneficiaries of the program, a double amputee...” Check out their website for next year’s event. Ought to be a BIG one. www.SemperFiFund.org 14 JULY 2013 JULY 2013 15 Story and Rolling Thunder Photos: Pete Alva For anyone that is following what I am doing or would like to know, I am finishing up a film production venture on a documentary about the motorcycle events throughout the continental United States. What better way to do this I thought, than by filming AND photographing two MAJOR back to back motorcycle entities of the Memorial Weekend of 2013, which would prove to be probably the most ambitious schedule of this venture? Yes, and I was filming the two that were the most congruent to each other, Rolling Thunder® in Washington D.C. and West Coast Thunder in Riverside California, each with the most impressive of numbers of motorcycle riders in procession. What sparked this endeavor was meeting Tim Chambers, ‘The Saluting Marine’, who is very well known throughout the United States for saluting the procession of nearly 200,000 riders at Rolling Thunder. I had filmed and photographed Tim last year there, but I was unsatisfied with the amount of footage and pictures that I got. So after learning that he was living locally here in Southern California, I set out to meet and greet him at Kennedy’s Custom Cycles in Oceanside in March, where he was recognized by many and who were all very excited to meet Tim. Tim’s presence just had that effect on people who had to show their respect in his direction. When asked about how he came about doing 16 what he does and how he felt about it, Tim answered: “ I was inspired to step off the curb and pop up a salute at Rolling Thunder to thank all the veterans that were zooming by me on their motorcycles and all the patriots doing this ride for the Prisoner Of War, and Missing In Action awareness. At the same time, I had no idea what my salute would eventually mean to many people all over the world. Many veterans feel that is a ‘welcome home’ for them and this has given them the courage to face their demons from so long ago when they had come home to what they felt was an ungrateful nation. Since then, I am often asked to speak around the country, reinforce patriotism, and console families. I also just enjoy doing this. I also enjoy going into schools and inspiring the kids to care about each other and to blaze their own path in life. It’s all about compassion and caring for others and that is my mission to unite citizens to the spirit of compassion and volunteerism bringing Americans together to improve the quality of life for our youth and veterans who are less fortunate . You can learn more about this passion of mine if you visit my website at LeaveNoWarriorBehind.org or Facebook page: TheSalutingMarine “ The enigma of Tim Chambers shows in his face with conviction when he salutes the bikers. Never a waiver in his poise unless he is directing them to split rows around him while they narrowly miss him in the path. On occasion an MC member duo on hand will help cool him with water poured down his back in the usually sweltering heat of Washington D.C., but he will not drink it until the last bike in procession has passed. Some stop and leave flowers at his feet, and some leave them as they slow down to ride by. Some will even stop, park their bike, salute him, or speak to him to show their gratefulness, and hug Tim before they leave. Most simply enjoy saluting him back as they ride by as Tim will occasionally regroup his stance and shout out a “Hooh Rah!” The riding route of Rolling Thunder starts at The Pentagon, crosses the Memorial Bridge, then corners near the Lincoln Memorial where just after, Tim Chambers is poised on the street median saluting. On past him the bikers go towards The Capitol building where they make their circular turn back towards the Lincoln Memorial, passing the White House and Washington Monument along the way before they park near The Lincoln Memorial. Here they attend the official stage activities for Rolling Thunder near the Reflecting Pool to hear the ceremonial speeches of scheduled veterans like National Executive Director Artie Muller, our own San Diego Harley-Davidson owner New York Myke, and a concert by Nancy Sinatra. The Vietnam Veterans Wall and other monuments are within walking distance of these activities. This time around at Rolling Thunder for Tim and I was different, as we both knew a U.S. JULY 2013 Airways jet was waiting to take us 2,300 miles back to California in time to be at the West Coast Thunder Run for Tim to salute the riders there too the very next morning on Monday, Memorial Day. This was an idea of Tim’s that I truly and absolutely had to follow up on for my film, and cover for this magazine. Upon arrival to West Coast Thunder Tim had decided to salute nearer the destination of the Riverside National Cemetery entrance a few blocks away. The mighty procession of nearly 8,000 bikers greeted Tim with very much enthusiasm and the crowds cheered him on as the bikers passed him and turned toward the cemetery. After the Riverside Cemetery ceremony the second destination was the Soboba Casino, where Tim joined the festivities on hand and watched the concert by country artist and U.S. Army veteran Craig Morgan. Congratulations, and many thanks to Tim for attending the Rolling Thunder ‘Ride For Freedom’ and West Coast Thunder Memorial Day Bike Run. For all attending and those involved, thanks for remembering our veterans and not forgetting our Prisoners Of War and Missing In Action. Please visit the official websites: www.rollingthunder1.com www.westcoastthunder.com JULY 2013 RUN FOR THE WALL 2013 Thursday morning, May 16th, Betty and Del Traphagen and Bill Weyers of Green Valley, and Victor Linn of Rio Rico left on their motorcycles for what would be a 9-day ride to the Viet Nam Memorial Wall in Arlington Va. and the Rolling Thunder rally in Washington, D.C. With many stops on the way for gas, food water and lodging. there were many highlights to the trip, some being visiting war memorials, VA veterans care centers, and elementary schools. the towns people were unbelievable, every town or site we visited people lined the streets, cheering, saluting us and waving the American flag. Law enforcement in every state was awesome, escorting something like a thousand bikes across their home state. we never stopped for a stop sign or red light from Tucson to Arlington Va., wow!! but the most rewarding part of the 5000 + mile trip was visiting the Viet Nam Memorial Wall, Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial. Bill was able to get a copy of his 21 year old cousin, Ricky Lee Chran name off the wall, killed in 1968. one of the most rewarding experiences we have ever had said Bill and fellow riders. Bill wants to thank the Corvette Outlaws, Green Valley Decorate Rock, American Legion Post 66 of Green Valley, Big Sky Motorcycles, Renegade Classics of Tucson and Weseloh Chevrolet of Carlsbad Calif. for supporting him on this ride.. Semper Fi and thank you... 17 18 JULY 2013 JULY 2013 19 By Pastor Fred Z. Pics by Fred and by Trisha Marshall The Mt. Soledad Bike Blessing in San Diego was an incredible way to begin the Southern California Riding Season this year. A “pile of bikes” roared into the parking lot of San Diego Harley-Davidson and started lining up – for the ride up the hill to the breath taking scenery at Mt. Soledad. The first cross on the top of Mt. Soledad was placed on the mountain in La Jolla in 1916. Then in 1954 – the original cross was replaced by a beautiful, massive, concrete latin cross that stands 43 feet high. It can be seen from miles around. Because the ACLU and some local Southern California atheists have tried to remove the cross through litigations since 1989, our friend New York Myke (the owner of San Diego Harley-Davidson) teamed up with me - Pastor Z. (the Founder of Bikers for Christ) – as we both thought it would be an ideal place to hold a bike blessing every year in Southern California. Each year there are different pastors, local politicians, and local war veterans and hero’s (including local Vietnam Nam veteran – New York Myke) who have spoken at the Bike Blessing. I am also a Vietnam Era Vet and I always try to share a down to earth, applicable and humorous message and pray a prayer of blessing and safety for the scores of riders that attend. Following the Blessing – the participants rode back to San Diego Harley for a BBQ lunch. The music featured our BFC Full Throttle Band who rocked the party. With 20 JULY 2013 JULY 2013 our unique blend of classic rock, early-style metal, and blues we hit the stage with sound pumping through a literal wall of Marshall, Galien Krueger, and Crate Amplifiers, blaring guitars, thundering bass and pounding drums. The band was joined by Quick Throttle Editor “CD” Chris Dalgaard on a few tunes. Chris belted out “Born to be Wild”, “All Along the Watchtower”, and “Some Kind of Wonderful”. The crowd loved his talented addition to the FTB’s rock & blues tunes (Editor’s note - I did catch this “error” but, in the interest of supporting my writers and publishing their work in it’s entirety, I’m leavin’ it in!) Another crowd favorite was “Voodoo Child Revisited” – as the FTB frontman lead vocalist and incredibly talented guitarist Eric Turner played some of the lead solo’s behind his head, and he even played with his teeth reminiscent of guitar legend Jimi Hendrix’s performances. Many in the audience danced, clapped, and thoroughly enjoyed the classic rock, metal and blues tunes jammed out by the Full Throttle Band. The ministry of “Five Loaves and Two Fish” provided the free gourmet lunch to the thankful attendees. These guys and gals really know how to throw on an incredible spread of delicious food… The Lord provided a beautiful day for the event, and many were truly blessed by this historic, annual event. This is an awesome, spiritual, free event that you won’t want to miss next year. 21 These Patriots, who had camped out the evening before just a stone’s throw away from the Veterans Cemetery, were up bright and early on Memorial Day to finalize the placing of the 150 flags and flag posts over the rebar which had been planted the previous day. The news media had arrived around 0530 (in civilian terms: 5:30 AM) to interview and film the moment in attempts to relay the essence of this event to their viewers. Attractive Fox News anchor Andrea Robinson conducted the interview on an obviously smitten RidersUSA President, Tim Rafferty. Mr. Rafferty still managed a rather eloquent delivery of what “Flags For Our Fallen” is all about and why RidersUSA considers this their “signature event”. On this day, RidersUSA, with the assistance of approximately 200 Motorcyclists and hot rods from various organizations, lined up next to those “Old Glories” flapping in the breeze, to salute and give thanks to the Family and Friends motoring by to visit their Loved Ones interred at the Veterans Cemetery. It was a time to give thanks and honor to all American Military Veterans who have and are serving and especially to those who have made the “ultimate sacrifice” in maintaining the Liberties and Freedoms that all Americans enjoy today. RidersUSA’s 7th Annual Memorial Day Rally/”Flags For Our Fallen” showed once more that Americans, regardless of differences, do come together to honor and give thanks to those Military Veterans who gave their lives in assuring that being an American is a very Blessed and Sacred privilege…… Story by Vince Ansel • Photos By George Childress Members of the RidersUSA organization who were instrumental in putting together another successful Annual Memorial Day Rally, did it all in true Military form. Some are Military Veterans while others received their disciplines gleaned from those personal life’s lessons that tend to strengthen character and build perseverance. They were there at the break of dawn after spending the previous late afternoon doing the difficult work of pounding 150 rebar stakes into hard soil with temperatures that sent most desert dwelling critters scurrying for the cooler confines of their respective shelters. Passing motorists must have thought, “Who in the hell are these crazies, working like soldier ants in the mid to late afternoon sun, at the side of the road and with no shade?!” These are the men and women who portray the spirit of dedication that define true red blooded Americans and make up the backbone of the RidersUSA organization. 22 JULY 2013 JULY 2013 23 They call it Hot Rods but it is also all about Bikes. See you there Wild Bill 25 Story and photos by Ray Seidel Glendale Harley-Davidson and California Harley Dealership - Redondo Beach - were the gathering points to launch the first annual MS Hope Ride at 8AM, Sunday, May 19th. The $125 included the ride to Gladstone’s at 10AM in Malibu to meet Grand Marshall Ron Perlman, Frank Kramer from the Heidi and Frank show and KABC personality Peter Tilden, then finished at Canyon Club at noon for more live music, lunch, entertainment, and a chance to win a 110th Anniversary Edition Road King (in A&W root beer color) valued at $20,999. Also raffled – a black leather jacket signed by the SOA cast. Nonriders could still purchase a $25 ticket for lunch and entertainment, concert by John Corbett and his band. Canyon Club had a full parking lot of motorcycles, but also some nice custom cars out there. The Road King was on display by the front door, waiting for its new owner. If you’ve not been to Canyon Club before, it’s multi-level inside, pool hall, bar, and good food. The stage had the live music going for hours, so plenty of entertainment for the riders. Want a cool souvenir to take with you? Tables were set up with a selection of items, including Sons of Anarchy motorcycle helmets, which seemed rather popular. Although Ron Perlman was the advertised attraction, he had a bit of help: Theo Rossi, Chris Reed, Sean McNabb, Tommy Flanagan, Mark Boone Jr., Kurt Yeager, John Corbett, and Hawk Lopez. And “Chucky” Michael Ornstien. The SOA actors have been going great guns in giving back to causes, and helping each other in turning 26 out together. This event will happen again next year, so plan now. Other opportunities to meet the SOA cast will be The Boot Ride, Sunday October 25th, and One From The Heart, October 19th. Not often do you get a chance to talk to Ron, who besides doing “HELLBOY” for Guillermo del Toro, will also be seen in his “PACIFIC RIM” this July 12 with SONS co-star Charlie Hunnam. Yes, he says, they have sort of created an unintended Actors Troupe, both also having starred together in “Frankie go Boom.” Our favorite Mouseketeer A n n e t t e F u n i c e l l o died from complications of the disease just last April; let’s put an end to MS. But how can we help in a practical way? Clint August, KGBFM 101.5 radio personality in San Diego learned over 11 years ago of an all-volunteer organization called Home Front San Diego that helps families of active duty personnel deployed abroad, who often struggle financially or logistically without their service member at home. They provide help for anything that an active duty military person or their family might need such as groceries, help to pay an unexpected bill, or baby furniture, or other necessities. So Clint founded The May Ride to support Home Front San Diego. This year’s 11th Annual event hosted at Biggs Harley-Davidson set the scene with the side street at Biggs lined with colorful flags representing all the military branches of service and their various units, teams and groups including POW/MIA, placed here by The Flag Man of Oceanside, ready for the breeze to fly them proudly. Starting out with a US Navy Color Guard presentation, a special 60’ X 30’ American flag was unfurled for the occasion, the National Anthem was sung, and the Purple Heart Pledge was recited. Cpl. Michael Fox was our Grand Marshall, and did a live remote with Clint for the Armed Forces Day KGB audience. So opened the 32 11th Annual May Ride! 435 riders took off on the Poker Run, as vendors and other visitors started mingling. Clint August being such a recognized personality in San Diego, and so involved in his own local community, he draws many sponsors such as the East County Cruisers Car Club to organize the Car and Bike Show. Lloyd’s Collision & Loose Cannon Customs were only too happy to provide the custom made trophies & awards. All the bands playing The May Ride donate their performances—including singer Josh D’Amigo (who Clint made sure to note is “single and lookin’, ladies!”) and bands Circle 7 & Trinity. Professional wrestler Chuck Palumbo & his band 3 Spoke Wheel was also scheduled to play as they have each year prior, but had to cancel his appearance due to Discovery Channel shooting schedule changes. However to fill the need in stepped Robert Emery & the May Ride All-Star Band, made up of members from other bands: Hitman Honey, Jane’s Diction, Vicious Fishes & Mud Wolf. And they sounded Great!! Mike’s BBQ (which is the biker friendly spot of choice for a monthly multi-dealer cooperative Bike Night this season, served up killer barbecue lunch, and on this bright sunny warm day you could also enjoy a wonderful snow cone or other tropical delight from the Half a Haole booth. But all through the day, we were reminded of our day’s purpose, with opportunity to visit with the Home Front San Diego folks at their display, and also meet vets here participating. Also here with Corporal Michael Fox was Marine Corporal Joshua Hotaling. Both vets have lower limb prosthetics and their mission is to help their fellow wounded warriors partly by participation at events like The May Ride. And it was an opportunity to express to real guys standing here in front of us, our appreciation for their willingness to lay it on the line. Cpl. Hotaling received an award for Extraordinary Heroism & Sacrifice, and Cpl. Fox received one for Service to Wounded Warriors, presented by Loose Cannon Customs. In keeping with this theme, California State Assembly Member 75th District Marie Waldron presented Clint onstage with a Certificate of Recognition to The May Ride for outstanding efforts and dedication in helping San Diego County military and their families through Home Front San Diego. Meanwhile the music played, girls danced, the Hooters ladies (delightfully tacky, yet unrefined) sold raffle tickets in competition for bragging rights making the most sales. The Guns & Buns contest which turns the tables on the typical bikini contest and lets the Ladies have a little taste of justice, crowned the winner with an actual jeweled tiara. He was a vision of manliness in chest hair and rhinestones… Meanwhile the Beachside Bruisers and Hidden City Derby Girls were here promoting roller derby and making for great photo opps! Families with kids attending also homed in on the jumpie castle and blow up lion for some great fun. JULY 2013 I stopped and chatted with Chuck from the Law Tigers who sponsored the stage and the upper deck view trailer, always so willing to help out with The May Ride very generously. Nice guy. And he always has a supply of Quick Throttle at his display! Two larger than life elements today were Randie Rage/Team RB Freestyle, and SoCal Customs top fuel nitrous drag bikes doing full-on burnouts down the pipe between taped off crowds cheering them on. After the dragster bikes left nice rubber tire tracks down the middle of the street and disappeared in a nitrous cloud, and I checked my camera for debris, Randie and Birdman suited up and defied gravity. Low speeds, high skill level to do stunts that on any other occasion by your average crotch rocket jockey would result in a hospital stay… you know, you’ve seen the YouTube videos! Wounded Warrior Homes with founder Mia Roseberry was here to reach out to riders for her event the following week, WWH’s mission?— helping wounded warriors recover at their own pace in a dormitory style home that continues the camaraderie while they heal. And, what about the returning vet who could benefit from a sweet loving companion or service dog? Big Paws Canine Foundation was here, with a large yet gentle working companion dog demonstrating what they do. JULY 2013 The Tom Mattingly May Ride Chapter Challenge prize of $500 was won by Biggs HOG, which is so supportive of all military causes, having many active duty and retired or post military members in their ranks. Among some other challenges were, who wore the oldest KGB shirt? The wearer of a vintage KGBROXU shirt won a prize from Clint. A challenge on what active duty military member at the event had the longest time in the service got an award for Josh Fennell with 13 years of service so far, and who rode in on a sportbike! Go Josh! So I went over to the Car & Bike Show and drooled over machines that bring back the good old days. The Best of Show for the cars was a really nicely appointed 1923 Ford T-bucket, one of so many beautiful vintage cars & trucks on display. Then the Bike Show winner almost escaped before I could shoot his photo with what looks to be an H-D Road Glide with many understated but uber-cool features like the custom front wheel and deep, dark mesmerizing paint with an inner golden brown glow, and custom bagger kit and tailpipes. Awesome. All along there were prizes handed out, plus raffles and auctions. The Poker Run high hand was a full house and won $500. Low hand was total garbage (well that’s not the word Clint used..!!) and won-$100! Part of the deal for being a vendor at a charity event is, to offer up a donation of some product or service you sell, for a prize. So there were a lot of prizes! The many Raffle prizes donated included a Patriot Suspension fork kit. Good Neighbor Tattoo donated 8 Auction prizes of 5 hr/$600 sessions. Other donated auction items were: Barona Valley Ranch & Casino Weekend Package with golf, a Scala Rider G9 double headset package, and ADA Flooring donated $1000 worth of flooring… I did a double take at yes, the pot bellied pig “Dyson” chillin’ under the table at the ADA table, Dyson doesn’t know he is a pig, he just knows he’s with his people… All said and done, about 4,500 people attending overall and over 70 vendors, The May Ride raised about $14,000 this year 100% of which goes right to Home Front San Diego! Story & Photos by Randy Twells San Diego, CA— The Cal-Diego Paralyzed Veterans Association holds its annual Ride, Strive & Roll event --this year was on May 4, to benefit several programs for paralyzed vets--- the Sports & Recreation program which usually involves some type of wheeled assist, be it a wheelchair, powerchair or other type of assist. Also, the MotorSports program which allows paralyzed vets to participate in performance or recreational driving through hand-controlled vehicles, and an Active Standing Sports Program which involves the entire family. Through this program, individuals with paralysis are able to stand up through the use of a ParaGolfer/ParaMobile and participate in activities such as golf, archery, and even going down to the sandy beaches. 40 - So as motorcyclists Ride, whether with disabled plates or not, all Strive, and all pretty much ROLL in one way or another be it on two motorcycle wheels, 3 trike wheels, a wheelchair, powerchair or other means of mobility, to support our paralyzed vets. The Warriors of the Cross motorcycle club have stepped up several years in a row now to help this event happen. The Warriors take charge of the registration, card pull, coffee and pastries at Kennedy’s Custom Cycles in Oceanside. Then the Warriors led the 46-mile run south along the coast to the VA Medical Center in beautiful La Jolla for the mid-point card stop, where the Warriors tent is set up near the Cal-Diego PVA offices. Then back on the ride down the coast for the last half blast and boom there you are soaking up the sun, breeze and coastal view from the rooftop deck of Sweetwater HarleyDavidson, pulling your final card at the party. Kickin’ back up there with awesome Tex Mex served by 5 Loaves & 2 Fishes, cold drinks and plenty of both, we got a treat with music from Gorgeous George and the Gentlemen Jammers, a dubious looking lot who nevertheless plays a darn good repertoire of classic rock songs, and puts a very authentic sound on each one. They had me at Stray Cat Strut and kept me all the way to the Doobies’ Listen to the Music. In between we had I Got a Line On You Babe and My Little Runaway, among dozens of other favorites. I mention music here also because part of the mix here was to have displays and exhibits by and about everything that helps anyone paralyzed to function better. One example, Wheelchair Dancers is a group that helps wheelchair bound people to get out and dance. They demonstrated this nicely right there as the Jammers did their thing, encouraging inquiries. Another display had JULY 2013 some shirts that proclaimed, no buttons, yet they had buttons—ok, this is the Hand Aid Foundation which if you’ve ever even had a thumb injury from a jerked handlebar, you know how hard it is to button a button. Let alone struggle with paralysis and have this issue. The shirt looks like a regular shirt with buttons, but behind the button is a Velcro closure! Thank you! of suicide that tragically claims some is necessary, in order to help our disabled ones face life head on, and not give up. Next I noted the San Diego Adaptive Sports Foundation display whose mission is as they state, “improving the quality of life of children and adults with physical disabilities through sports and recreation.” Finally I noted a man with an interesting machine that he sat on, or in—no wait, he was standing up in it now— a mechanized lift/chair/support, this is the Paramobile that Cal-Diego PVA supports— that allows a paralyzed person to in effect stand up or assume a vertical posture, and for example hit a golf ball, or stand up to meet an able bodied person at eye level, at the same physical stature. This unit was here courtesy of the Stand Up and Play Foundation. Another important participant was SOSL, Survivors of Suicide Loss- helping with Support, Awareness and Prevention- since physical disability can be so challenging, facing the reality All these organizations are so deserving of support and this event gave all the opportunity to mingle and learn. Wheelchair Willie a long time volunteer with Cal-Diego PVA was here helping JULY 2013 out as was Pamela Brown our tireless event organizer. A truly educational, fun and different event! Cal-Diego President James Miller and Treasurer Greg Mottino joined Pamela at the stage along with Executive Director Peter Ballantyne to do the prizes, raffles and awards, and thanked everyone for participating, volunteering and supporting, and Sweetwater H-D’s generous hospitality. The Black Jack winner Denise had a perfect hand of 21 and received 2 tickets to a Tim McGraw Concert and Meet & Greet as her prize! Sweetwater GM Anastasia Polles stopped in during the event to add her support, and Bill Kennedy was here as well, having participated in the run. Cal-Diego PVA hopes to see you all again next year. Thunder on the Lot had been raising monies for a multitude of children’s causes for 19 years now and has collected about $4.5 million, thanks to all you generous people. Ron and Yvette Emard, owners of Antelope Valley Harley Davidson, work tirelessly to produce a very fulfilling weekend full of a wide variety of activities and entertainment. The Thunder is created by the hundreds of motorcycles (Harleys) that show up to support the cause and the Lot is a well developed Antelope Valley Fairgrounds. I always like shows that are held at permanent venues as the infrastructure is much more user friendly than that at temporary sites. (read permanent restrooms) Also exhibit buildings, called “Barns”, provide shade and even air conditioning for some relief from the mid-afternoon heat that the news said was about 107 degrees. As well the food concessions are permanent and offer up some pretty tasty items, my favorite of which is enhanced by the smell of tri-tip on the grill. A full bar is also provided in the beer pavilion shaded and misted seating area. Over 100 vendors of all types filled the grounds giving you a chance to purchase merchandise that suited your needs. Or just stroll and look at all the eye candy! I arrived Saturday afternoon at about 3 pm, the heat of the day, and found a rather light crowd. Most of the roughly 4500 that attended came later that night. Sunday was much cooler at 93 degrees and attracted a much larger crowd of nearly 10,000 which is about what last year’s figures were. Speaking of figures, Ron said about $150,000 was collected to distribute to the over 20 charities administered by the “Kids Charities of Antelope Valley”. Both 42 days were pretty windy and blew out the jumping of Metal Mulisha FMX, supercross, motocross and MMA teams. Saturday has a $10 admission because name bands perform and this year was the well known “Great White” preceded by Judge Jackson, the Bullfrog Blues Band and MLC. A good size crowd filled the seating area. There is also another stage in the outside car show area that had some pretty talented musicians playing until 10:30 pm. Sunday is free to enter but still features a full main stage of bands starting at 11:30 and going until 5pm. The inside car show is an air conditioned Barn that held some very fine vehicles with serious paint and chrome. These cars just couldn’t be subjected to the dirt and dust blown around by the feisty winds. Another barn held the Bike Show which is hands-on organized & executed by AVHD’s GM, Scott Kellerman, and drew a fine lot of competitors for the dozens of trophies in several classes. Scott presented the prestigious Best of Show trophy to Sam & Dawndra Baldi for their “Lost Angel”, a labor of love in tribute to their granddaughter who was tragically lost before birth due to their daughter’s miscarriage; the story of their journey last year at Sturgis without Lost Angel was published in our Oct. 2012 issue. Since then, bringing this bike to completion in her honor has been their mission, and she will finally make it to Sturgis for the AMD and Rat’s Hole competitions this summer. Meanwhile, Best of Show at Thunder on the Lot along with other awards in the meantime, has attested to the inspiration she fueled. There was also a special area for custom import cars, boats, and RV’s. Something for everybody with enough to make it a full day. There is also a carnival that ran all day both days with rides and games suitable for adults JULY 2013 and children. Maybe the “Lot” is where the temporary race course was set up for the drifting demonstrations as they created some “Thunder” of their own. I did a very fun ride along, the only problem being it was way too short due to a late schedule. Also on the same course were the big bike stunt riders that performed some unique tricks and even had a female tandem rider on one bike. Both of these had several time slots on both days so you wouldn’t miss them due to the many other things to see and do. The “Lot” shares the burnout pit which was a new event to me as they use cars and not motorcycles. The car is staged on a steel plate used in road construction so they don’t burn holes in the asphalt parking lot. Sunday started early with a poker run beginning at the Harley Dealership with sign ups from 7:30 until 10:00. I’ll just say that I made it there before the registration closed and learned that a pretty large number of over 300 riders had joined in. Sunday also saw many more locally based booths for children’s activities, a community stage for emerging performers, a Barn full of kids games and of course the trophy presentations for cars, bikes and a Harley-Davidson Bike giveaway. I’ll wrap it up with a quote from Ron and Yvette. “Our mission remains firm: to help the kids in our community who truly need it most. We are proud to be associated with all of you who support this mission year after year. We thank each and every one of you who have sacrificed time, effort, and financial support to make Thunder On The Lot such an enormous success. See more Thunder photos at http://quickthrottle.com/media-archive/2013-photo-gallery/ JULY 2013 43 44 JULY 2013 JULY 2013 45 By Digger Dave M.I.A.P……If you’re not familiar with this acronym don’t feel alone. Most of us have the M.I.A part down but the “P” is a stickler trying to associate a word that goes along with the rest. Quick Throttle received an email from “Sparklz” in Tucson asking if we would be interested in providing coverage for an upcoming M.I.A.P event, the first one in the Phoenix area. With Quick Throttle being a huge supporter of our troops and anything associated with our military, past and present, we jumped on it with a resounding “Hell Yea!..Ummm What is it?” Always being curious about things, I’ll have to admit I did a search on them (as some of you may be doing right now) rather than wait on a response. I was astounded, how could this be? I had no idea at all that this was actually happening on a National level. M.I.A.P…”Missing In America Project”. If you’re like me, then you’re probably thinking that this is about…well, missing people. In a way it is, but it’s at a level that I’m sure many of us have no clue about. Being a Military support based organization that provides help in locating the cremains of UNCLAIMED American Veterans. The word “Unclaimed” threw me off, how is it a Veteran can go “unclaimed”? I’m going to let M.I.A.P tell us what it is they do: 46 “The initial focus of the MIA Project is a massive, nation-wide effort to locate, identify and inter the unclaimed remains of forgotten veterans. This task will be executed through the combined, cooperative efforts of members of the American Legion, other volunteer service and veteran organizations, local Funeral Homes, State Funeral Commissions, State and National Veterans Administration Agencies, and the State and National Veterans Cemetery Administrations. Local, state and national laws must be followed in the identification, claiming process and proper interment of the unclaimed remains of forgotten veterans.” I was still at a loss understanding how a Veteran could go “unclaimed”; it just didn’t register in my feeble brain. I started doing a little research but info on the subject of how our Vets were “lost” was slim to nothing at best. It turns out they weren’t really “lost” but had been cremated and then the cremains were never picked up, therefore they sat on Mortuary shelves waiting for someone to claim them and give them the proper Military burial they deserved. I attended the event not really understanding what was happening other than some of our Veterans were going to finally receive the full Veteran internment they deserved. I talked to Sparklz (Natalya) and her husband Blaze (Michael) Nelson at the event and I was promptly speechless. At that particular service there was one Veteran whose cremains had been unclaimed, sitting in a Mortuary for 58 years!! Two others had been unclaimed for 56 years and 3 more for 55 years, with the shortest length of time being 33 years unclaimed! That was mind boggling, and at the same time very emotional realizing that these decorated Veterans from WWI and WWII were finally getting the burial with full honors they so much deserved. On that particular day in Phoenix at the National Memorial Cemetery 27 unclaimed Veterans were finally laid to rest. We all know that in the biker community there are a heck of a lot of Veterans, and with this being the first ever M.I.A.P in the Phoenix area the turnout of riders was huge! I was at the cemetery awaiting the arrival of the procession when I realized this was a lot bigger than I had thought. Looking to the south I spotted 3 news choppers hovering in various places, and they stayed there. Finally they started moving a little bit closer, meaning the procession was about to “round the bend” heading to the ceremony. Police and Fire units suddenly started rolling in from the OPPOSITE direction, and there were a bunch of them. They set up at the entrance to the cemetery, stood at attention and saluted as soon as the pack was visible. It took over 40 minutes for the pack and the ensuing train of cages to finally make it thru the entrance. Veterans and their families, state dignitaries, along with those simply wishing to honor our Veterans packed the area solid. It was quite a sight to behold, old, young, newborn, disabled, all came together for one purpose, to pay our respects. From here I’m just going to let M.I.A.P describe what their mission is all about, but first here is a poem written by Helen Glass (who turned 90 the next day), whom I was honored to meet and speak with. Her brother was one of the “lost”. “I did my best in the fight To help keep peace Just glad that I came home Safe and in one piece Then I departed this life And one day somehow got “lost” along the way. I and other unfortunates Just like me Unwanted, unclaimed, How sad that must be So, then I say but Not in jest I am finally going to be “put to rest” With full honors A military ceremony And I ask Dear God Will they play “Taps” for me? No longer unclaimed Or “forgotten” are we Someone did care They must have heard our prayer We are no longer “Missing in America” We have been “found” Finally, to be with other veterans Here in this hallowed ground! JULY 2013 “THANK YOU FROM GRATEFUL MISSING IN AMERICA VETERANS” I wrote this if I were a spokesman for these Veterans finally being given the full Military Honors they deserve.” -Helen Anderson Rickard Glass, US Navy WW2 Veteran, Life Member American Legion since June 1945. About M.I.A.P (by M.I.A.P with their permission) Arizona Structure: Ed Torres, Southern AZ Coordinator Michael “Blaze” Nelson, AZ State Escort Team Leader Natalya “Sparklz” Nelson, Media Coordinator Gary and Liz Bartel, AZ State Chaplains “MIAP is NOT a motorcycle club, but we are dependent upon and have strong relationships with various clubs throughout the State of AZ. These clubs ride in support of MIAP Missions. MIAP is NOT a political organization. Politicians support us, but when they are at a MIAP event, they are never permitted to campaign, speechify, or speak of politics. They represent the Veteran Community. MIAP AZ works closely with the VA at the Regional Office, National Cemetery in Cave Creek AZ, and the Southern Arizona JULY 2013 Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Sierra Vista. MIAP AZ works closely with the various County Indigent Burial Services and County Fiduciaries (each County calls them by a different name). MIAP is endorsed by the American Legion (Resolution 24). MIAP AZ is endorsed by the Arizona Funeral Home, Cemetery and Cremation Association (AFCCA). Our Procedures: It must be made absolutely clear that the Funeral Homes and the Funeral Home Association (AFCCA) are our friends and allies. They help us whenever and wherever they can. They truly recognize the unfortunate circumstances of unclaimed human remains (cremains), and especially the unclaimed Cremains of American Veterans. We have the Endorsement of the AFCCA and the strong assistance of its members. Unclaimed cremains are in no way a reflection on any funeral home, crematory or cemetery. Unfortunately life happens, and many people outlive relatives, die indigent or without located friends knowing they have passed. MIAP steps in to help the Veterans. After establishing a relationship with an individual funeral home, MIAP is invited by that funeral home to share in the information they have on unclaimed cremains. We sign a privacy statement and we do not share information concerning the unclaimed, except with the Veteran Administration. Never more than 2 people in the MIAP organization have access to the personal information about the cremated remains. We submit the names of the unclaimed to the Veterans Administration. They are set up to handle requests but as you might imagine, in today’s world the wheels churn slowly so nationally we try not to over burden them. MIAP is respectful of their time and help. When we receive the names of known Veterans back from the VA, we complete more paperwork where we actually take responsibility for the Cremains and act as their surrogate family. This paperwork is kept on file at MIAP National as well as with the local funeral home and the Veterans Administration. Shortly thereafter MIAP takes care of custody and control of the cremains and they are respectfully moved, usually by the participating funeral homes, to a staging funeral home in market segments. The cremains are respectfully stored there until we have a number that will warrant an HONOR MISSION. In AZ we try to do our Missions in the early Spring and early Fall. Traditionally we will have over 125 motorcycle riders from clubs all over the State of AZ, and many from our bordering States. In addition we usually expect over 30 cars, pickup trucks, etc. There are always 3 flag lines, one while loading the Cremains into the hearse, one while removing for placement in the Place of Honor and a third prior to being placed in their INDIVIDUAL proper burial vault. Military from across the State participate, an Honor Detail carries the cremains from the funeral home to the hearse, and a Military Honor Guard carries from the hearse to the Place of Honor and then to the cremains vault. The VA and various Veteran organizations are present to help as well as many civic groups volunteering their services on Mission Day. Cremains come to us in cans, bags, and cardboard boxes. They are buried in beautiful urns with the deceased Veteran’s name, date of birth, date of death, and branch of service engraved on their urn.
