beautiful products into collections based on artisan group, technique,
or other similarity, so you can easily choose items that will make your
sale a success.
The items in this catalog are returnable, so there’s no risk to your
organization or congregation. You’ll receive a 10% discount and free
shipping on orders over $300. You can return unsold handcrafts from this

Frank Millero lent his expertise to
VillageWorks by volunteering to spend a
month in Cambodia. Frank is a product
designer, consultant and educator, and has
designed products for West Elm. He was
joined by Joseph De Leo, a professional
photographer.
Frank collaborated with VillageWorks to
create new designs and develop ideas
for new fabrics and products. In Frank’s
words, “We titled this project “People
Support People” because it reveals how
SERRV’s activities build a chain of mutual
support connecting people in the U.S. to
artisan communities throughout the world.”

Fulfilling dreams
Bharti Solanki shares, “At other
workshops, they are only focused on
the work. But here they care about my
emotions and feelings. They want me to
do well at work, but also at home.”
Bharti has embroidered for SERRV partner
MarketPlace: Handwork of India for more
than 12 years. She is married with two
children, and they rent a small one-room
apartment near her family in Mumbai.
Her parents and grandparents help
with the housework so she can work at
MarketPlace during the day. While Bharti
was unable to finish high school herself,
she is very proud of her daughter who
has just started college thanks to Bharti’s
fair trade employment.

Since our founding in 1949, SERRV has treated marginalized
artisans and farmers with respect and dignity. One of our longterm partners, St. Mary’s in India, provides a beautiful example
of equality in the way they work and through our relationship. St.
Mary’s welcomes women of different religious and socio-economic
backgrounds, even in times of local civil strife. SERRV has worked
closely with St. Mary’s to ensure the women are paid fairly for their
skills and time–in fact, when we found that the women’s time wasn’t
being fully calculated we requested that they pay them more.

SERRV strives to increase the quantity and quality of products we
purchase for our catalogs, because every artisan our fair trade
partners employ is one less person who could be exposed to
exploitative and dangerous labor practices. One of our signature
programs is our annual Design Camp, which was created to help
designers with our artisan partners better understand US lifestyles.
This prepares them to take an even more active role in growing the
positive fair trade cycle. To date, we have held three Design Camps
in the US and one in Peru, and we have plans for two more this year.
promoting women’s rights
Most of the artisans who make our products are women, and
we only work with organizations that treat women as equals
in all levels of decision-making. Our partner in Mali, Delta
Survie, also promotes the wellbeing of women by offering them
skills training and a safe place of spiritual healing while they
recover from obstetric fistula corrective surgery. SERRV is their
only export customer and we have funded multiple design
workshops for the artisans to help them succeed.

In many parts of the world, free public schools are not an option
and parents can’t afford to pay the tuition fees. Several of
SERRV’s partners invest proceeds from their sales or donations
to fund education for children in their communities. Some of the
ways SERRV has supported education are through regular orders
so they can pay teachers (Nyabigena, Kenya) and targeted
donations to cover school fees (Get Paper Industries, Nepal).

Protecting girls
SERRV’s partner, Get Paper Industry (GPI), has created
an anti-trafficking program that fights prevalent human
trafficking in Nepal. Their program focuses on the
marginalized and vulnerable Tamang and Mager castes
in a rural district where trafficking is rampant. They visit
families and communities to bring awareness to the risks
and realities of trafficking. So far, with support from SERRV,
they have reached more than 25,000 girls and their
parents in this district.
The program also focuses on educating women and
fighting high illiteracy rates in these communities. Through
their “Send your daughter to school” campaign, they
sponsor 125 scholarships a year for girls from low-income
families to attend school. These families have come to
understand how an education will lead to a better, and
safer, future for their daughters.
SERRV offers handmade paper ornaments from Get Paper
Industry, and we package many of our scarves, jewelry,
and ties in their boxes.

SERRV strives to increase the quantity and quality of products we purchase
from Bangladesh and 31 other countries because every new artisan our fair trade
partners employ is one less person who could be exposed to exploitative and
dangerous labor practices.

As a nonprofit organization, we use all proceeds from
your purchases and donations to promote these values in
the 33 countries where we work.
We spoke with one of our artisan partner organizations in Bangladesh to better
understand their perspective on the disaster. Tanu Dey, the Director and CEO of
Dhaka Handicrafts, said, “Personally, I was shocked by the disaster that happened
due to the factory collapse. Coverage aired on television around the clock for more
than two weeks. Photos of trapped, injured and dead bodies, especially of girls,
made it a struggle for me to concentrate at work. The city turned to a standstill due
to such a loss of life and extreme fight for survival.”
Our experience has taught us that breaking the cycle of
poverty through fair trade builds
stronger societies, economies,
and peace. This knowledge
inspires our creativity and unique
approach to fair trade.
Dhaka Handicrafts is one of four groups that SERRV partners with in Bangladesh,
and we have worked with them since 1984. Started as a project of a Swiss
development organization, Dhaka is now an artisan-owned cooperative. They offer
benefits to their 1800 artisans including interest-free advances on orders for the
purchase of raw materials, ongoing skill development training, a retirement savings
plan, health care facilities, and equal pay and benefits for women.

Kuapa Kokoo is democratically run with farmer representation
through village boards that give a voice to all members. Juliet is on
her village board and is also vice-chair of her women’s group, which
