The Wingate University Sports Network will partner with
Internet Consulting Services, Inc. (ICS) and Stretch
Internet for Internet video and audio broadcasts during the
2010-11 academic year. The Network will cover football,
volleyball, soccer, basketball, baseball, softball,
swimming and lacrosse during the 2010-11 academic year.
Last year, the Wingate University Sports Network
produced over 115 broadcasts which included live video
streams at more than 75 events. The video streams cost
$5.95 each (season passes are available for certain sports).
The 2010-11 audio broadcasts are free.
Ryan Brown
The Network will broadcast at least five women's soccer
matches, five men's soccer matches and 11 volleyball
matches during the fall. Wingate director of broadcasting
Ryan Brown (class of 2006) will provide the play-byplay for all of the broadcasts. Brown will team with
Wingate sports marketing director Wayne Shadrick to
broadcast the 10 football games during the 2009 season.

2010 SEASON OUTLOOK
The Wingate University Bulldogs return nine starters each on offense and
defense from a team that had the best SAC finish in school history. The
Bulldogs went 7-3 in 2009 and 5-2 in the conference, finishing alone in second
place. Wingate had a well-balanced offense in 2009; the Bulldogs return the
entire backfield along with their top four receivers. The Bulldogs led the nation
in turnover margin in 2009, while ranking sixth in kickoff return average.
Redshirt junior quarterback Cody Haffly returns after an impressive first
season under center for the Bulldogs. Haffly threw for 228.1 yards per game,
ranking third in the league in yards and completion percentage, while finishing
second in touchdown passes. He had an impressive 21 touchdowns compared
to only six interceptions in 2009. Haffly saved his best performance for the end
of the season, completing 18-of-30 passes for 293 yards and five touchdowns
in Wingate’s convincing 56-35 win at Mars Hill.
“It is obviously nice to have our starting quarterback back for two more years;
he was elected captain this spring,” head coach Joe Reich says. “I’m excited
about what Cody will do this year. He manages the game very well and doesn’t
turn it over. He is an accurate passer and knows the game in and out. He does
a great job of spreading the ball around and using the whole field.”
Haffly will have plenty of targets for the 2010 season. All-SAC receiver Delric
Ellington leads the impressive group of receivers. The senior was third in the
SAC with seven touchdown receptions, fourth with 4.70 receptions per game
and seventh with 55.8 receiving yards per game. Chris Bowden’s freshman
campaign included 30 receptions for 361 yards and three touchdowns, while
Philip Thomas caught 25 passes for 379 yards and four scores.
The aggressive Wingate defense led the league by forcing 2.7 turnovers per
game. The Bulldogs came up with 16 fumbles in the 2009 season, while
notching 11 interceptions, As a result, Wingate led the nation with a turnover
margin of 1.50 per game. The Bulldogs finished second in the league with 2.5
sacks per game and 7.6 tackles for loss per game.
Redshirt freshman safety Robert Fletcher led the charge on the defensive
side with 8.3 tackles per game, good for second in the SAC. Fletcher led the
conference with five recovered fumbles, while ranking second in the league by
forcing three fumbles. Fletcher also had a pair of interceptions, while setting a
school record with a 98-yard interception return for a touchdown in the seasonopening win against West Georgia.
Redshirt senior cornerback Terrence Stephens was second on the team last
season with 62 tackles, while leading the team with six pass break-ups and
seven passes defended. He also forced a fumble and had an interception.
Richie Kazazian had six tackles for loss and three sacks in the 2009 season,
while also recovering a pair of fumbles.
Reich believes the depth at defensive tackle and linebacker will be a big
strength for the defense in 2010. “Both starting defensive tackles are back and
we are very deep behind them as well,” Reich says. “Josh Yon and Cody
Cole are the starters, but we are as deep there as we have ever been. We
have three good freshmen that could make an early impact. We really feel
fortunate at defensive tackle right now.”
“We have all of our starting receivers back and three are seniors,” Reich says.
“We have so much good experience; they all do certain things well. We do not
have the one superstar receiver, which we like. Cody does a great job spreading it around. We don’t want to feature one guy. When we go four wide, we
want the defense to have to cover the whole field.”
Jack Taylor is the lone defensive end returning, so the Bulldogs will look to
move Buster Smith to an end spot. “Defensive end was a little thin coming out
of spring, with Taylor as our only returner that has seen any time,” Reich notes.
“Buster was our best defensive lineman coming out of spring, so we will put
him outside at defensive end. We also have Jonathan Simmons coming in as
a transfer that may see some time as a defensive end.”
Senior Perry Floyd will be a huge part of Wingate’s offense and special teams
in the 2010 season. A pre-season first team All-American (according to
Consensus Draft Services), Floyd led the SAC and ranked in the top 10
nationally in punt return yards and kickoff return yards. His 30.38 kickoff return
yards per game were good for third nationally, while his 15.07 yards per punt
return were good for ninth nationally. Floyd had an 89-yard kickoff return for a
touchdown in Wingate’s dramatic 50-49 come-from-behind win at LenoirRhyne, a game in which Floyd also had six catches for 94 yards and two
touchdowns. He was second on the team in 2009 with 32 catches, 389 yards
and five touchdowns.
Reich is confident with the solid group returning at linebacker, led by Greg
Harmon, who was named a captain in the spring. “Harmon had a great spring
and a great summer, too,” Reich notes. “He was the team MVP two years ago,
but was injured last season. He has been working out all summer. He is the
leader and should have a great season.” Reich is also expecting big
contributions from Clayton Hazeltine, Kazazian, Jared Seate and Ben
Hinson. “That is a good solid group. Blake Holmes stepped up big in the
spring and we are expecting to see good things from him as well. It is a good,
solid, hard-working group that will certainly do good things. Seate will probably
start in the middle; he was our fastest linebacker in the spring.”
Wingate’s balanced attack on offense was second in the SAC in scoring
offense at 33.6 p oints per game, second in passing offense and third in total
offense with 395.3 yards per game. The running game played a large role in
Wingate’s success, featuring a pair of All-SAC players. Vince Jordan had an
impressive sophomore season in 2009, earning first team All-SAC honors by
rushing for 967 yards and 12 touchdowns. He averaged 6.2 yards per carry in
2009, while ranking third in the SAC in yards per game and fourth in rushing
touchdowns. Two-time All-SAC running back Nelson Woods ran for 378 yards
in seven games last season, scoring seven touchdowns. Woods led the SAC in
rushing in 2007 and 2008, going over 1,100 yards in both seasons. His 2,790
career rushing yards are just 156 yards shy of Wingate’s all-time record.
Fletcher and Stephens will anchor the secondary for the Bulldogs. Tyrone
Scott and Justin Squirewell will also see time at cornerback. Transfer Owo
Mobio may also be in contention at cornerback. “We need to get Mobio
accustomed to our style of play and how we do things,” Reich says. “This is the
biggest thing early, to add some depth (to our secondary).”
“Having Jordan and Woods back, two all-conference running backs, obviously
is a huge strength,” Reich notes. “They are a great combination. Knowing we
have them all year…this will be an even better situation than last year. We plan
on using both of them and alternating back and forth. They complement each
other so well. It is a good two-headed attack that we would like to get on the
field at the same time.”
The offensive line returns four of five starters. Brock Mueller will move from
left guard to left tackle, while Mike Arndt, Ralph Curiel and Andrew Garner
also return from last year’s line. The offensive line was obviously a strength of
the Bulldogs last year, with the passing and running game both excelling in
2009. Redshirt freshman Mark Clyburn will look to take the tight end spot
vacated by All-SAC honoree Ryan Webber. “Mark has much talent, he just
needs to gain some experience,” Reich says. “He is very athletic and catches it
well.”

Placekicker RP Lopez and punter Phillip Hilliard both return and will handle
the kicking for the Bulldogs in 2010. “Lopez and Hilliard have great
experience,” Reich says. “RP was a little inconsistent last year, but he has
done some hard work and I am excited about his year. I think he will have a
great season. Phil really turned out to be a great punter for us last season. We
feel very good with him coming back this year.” Hilliard was fourth in the SAC
at 38.6 yards per punt in the 2009 season. Lopez made 40-of-43 extra points
in 2009, while hitting two-of-four field goals on the season.
For the second straight season, Wingate opens its campaign against the
University of West Georgia. The Bulldogs will make the trip to Carrollton, Ga.
on August 28 for a 7 p.m. opener. Jordan’s 215 rushing yards and three touchdowns led Wingate to a 38-17 win in 2009. The Bulldogs will make their firstever trip to Valdosta State University on Sept. 4 for another 7 p.m. kick-off.
Wingate opens the home slate on Sept. 18 at 1:30 p.m. against UNC
Pembroke. The Braves made their first-ever trip to the NCAA play-offs in 2009.
The SAC season starts Oct. 2, when the Bulldogs host Catawba College at
1:30 p.m.

Seniors
Cody Cole
Class: Senior
Position: DL
Height: 6-1 Weight: 270
Hometown: Venice, Fla.
High School: Cardinal Mooney
Cody Cole provided the Bulldog defense a solid presence between the
tackles, posting 18 total tackles in 2009. Five of his stops resulted in a
loss. Cole had five tackles in a big victory at Catawba (Oct. 24). His size
and quick hands will give opposing offensive linemen problems all year
long. Cole is Wingate academic top 10 student and a SAC
Commissioner's Honor Roll member. Cole had nine tackles in 2008,
including three stops in a win over Tusculum. Cole posted two tackles in a
victory over ECSU. A National Honor Society member at Cardinal Mooney,
Cole was named Most Valuable offensive lineman his senior season. A
team captain for coach Mike Dowling, Cole was first team All-Area and
All-State. In 2006, Cardinal Mooney won the district and regional titles.
Cole transferred to Wingate after one season at Mount Union (Ohio)
College. He is the son of Casey and Kathy Cole.

Ralph Curiel
Class: Senior
Position: OL
Hometown: Tehachapi, Calif.
High School: Tehachapi
Ralph Curiel was a starter from the moment he walked on the Wingate
campus in 2009. Curiel and the Bulldogs finished second in the SAC in
scoring offense (33.6 points per game) and passing offense (241.1 yards
per game) last year. Wingate averaged 395.3 total offense yards per game
last year. One of the top students on the Wingate campus, Curiel was
named to the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll last year. An ESPN
Academic All-America® candidate, Curiel is a member of Wingate's
Academic top 10 and the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll. A transfer from
the College of the Canyons, Curiel was a sophomore starter and two-year
letter winner. He helped the Cougars compile a 12-1 overall record and
average over 44 points per game. At Tehachapi High School, Curiel played
football for head coach Steve Denman. Tehachapi won the 2003 CIF
championship his sophomore season. Curiel was All-SSL his junior and
senior campaigns, serving as a team captain his final season. He is the
son of Ralph and Maria Curiel.

Dedric Ellington
Class: Redshirt Senior

Hometown: Charlotte, N.C.
High School: Vance
Delric Ellington's 47 catches for 550 yards led the Bulldogs last year, topping the Wingate charts for the second consecutive season. He added
seven touchdown grabs to the mix. The league's coaches voted Ellington
to the All-SAC second team last year. Ellington ended the season with five
catches for 114 yards and one TD in the season finale at Mars Hill. He had
three 100-yard receiving games. Ellington caught five passes for 103 yards
and two scores in the Tusculum contest. He posted six catches for 104
yards and one TD against Newberry. Ellington was fourth in the SAC with
4.7 receptions per game. He made the pre-season All-SAC team as
selected by the league's SIDs. At Independence, Ellington played for head
coach Tommy Knotts and helped the Patriots win the 2003 N.C. 4A state
title. A transfer from CIAA member Livingstone College, Ellington led the
Blue Bears in receptions. Delric's brother Ron Ellington was a two-time
All-American and South Atlantic Conference defensive Player of the Year
at Catawba College. Delric is the son of Ron and Dannette Ellington.

Perry Floyd
Position: WR
Hometown: Gastonia, N.C.
High School: Forestview
Perry Floyd was named to the 2009 NCAA Division II All-American second
team by Don Hansen's Football Gazette. Earlier, Floyd was named to the
All-Super Region 2 first team by the same publication. A first team All-SAC
performer as a return specialist, Floyd averaged 30.4 yards per kick return
and 15.1 yards per punt return in 2009. He led the league in both
categories. Floyd was third on the NCAA Division II charts in kick returns
and ninth in punt returns. In 2009, he finished the year with 1,105
all-purpose yards. As a receiver, he had 32 receptions for 389 yards. Floyd
contributed 289 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns (one kick return
and two receiving) at Lenoir-Rhyne Oct. 10, 2009. Thanks to Floyd's
heroics, the Bulldogs posted a 50-49 come-from-behind victory over the
LRU Bears. He was a member of the football, wrestling, track and baseball
teams at Forestview. Floyd was All-Gazette and All-Conference for the
football Jaguars. In wrestling, he was All-Region and All-Conference and a
champion in both the region and the conference. Floyd was the co-MVP of
the Gaston County track meet. Perry Floyd is the son of Perry Floyd, Sr.
and Trudy Floyd.

Andrew Garner
Position: OL
Hometown: Sharpsburg, Ga.
High School: Northgate
Andrew Garner is the anchor of the Bulldog offensive line at the center
position. He will be an important part of the Wingate offense, as he
devises correct protection schemes and provides excellent pass
protection. A three-year starter, Garner helped the Bulldogs finish second
in the SAC in scoring offense (33.6 points per game) and passing offense
(241.1 yards per game) in 2009. Wingate averaged 395.3 total offense
yards per game last year. Garner and the O-Line helped Vince Jordan
earn a career-best rushing year in 2009. While a student-athlete at
Northgate, Garner was a member of the football and wrestling teams. He
earned three letters in each sport. Garner was the captain of the football
team his senior year. He was named All-County his junior and senior
seasons. Andrew Garner is the son of Andy and Janet Garner.

Greg Harmon
Position: LB
Hometown: Hope Mills, N.C.
High School: South View
Greg Harmon's ability to shed blocks by opponents led to his 39 tackles on
the 2009 season. Harmon tallied a 53-yard interception return for a
touchdown against North Greenville. He recorded 11 tackles in a
nationally-televised victory over Tusculum (Sept. 24, 2009). The next
week, he posted nine stops in a win against Brevard. With timely
interceptions and tackling ability, Harmon will be a problem for opposing
offenses all year long. Harmon's teammates elected him a captain for the
2010 season. At South View High, Harmon was a member of the football,
basketball and tennis teams. He was All-Conference and All-Region two
years each in football and basketball. Harmon was a team
captain in both sports. He is the son of Gregory
and Kohnee Harmon.

Phillip Hillard

Phillip Hilliard made an impact in his first season as the Bulldog punter.
He ranked fourth in the SAC with his 38.6 yards per punt average. His 76yard punt in the North Greenville victory (Sept. 5, 2009) was the longest
punt in the SAC last season. Hilliard is not afraid to mix it up, as his two
special teams tackles exemplify. The 2010 season is his third with the WU
football program. Phillip Hilliard played football and baseball at Salisbury
High. He was All-Conference and All-County in both sports following his
junior and senior seasons. Hilliard won the Ludwig Award for Athlete of
the Year at Salisbury High School in 2006. He was a two-time baseball
MVP and a team captain in both baseball and football. His baseball coach
at SHS was Wingate alumnus Scott Maddox. Hilliard was a member of
the highly successful Rowan County American Legion baseball team. He
is the son of Craig and Lillie Hilliard. His father played college baseball
and basketball. An Atlanta Braves draftee out of high school, Craig Hilliard
helped lead his Mitchell College team to a second-place finish in the
NJCAA World Series.

Ben Hinson
Class: Senior
Position: LB
Hometown: Monroe, N.C.
High School: Piedmont
Ben Hinson anchored the Bulldog linebacker corps last year, recording 38
tackles and 1.5 quarterback sacks in 2009. A former pre-season AllAmerican, Hinson is ready to make his senior season one for the record
books. His ability to get into running lanes and stop the run will be a key
element in the Bulldog run defense. Hinson had 12 tackles in a big home
victory over Brevard (Oct. 3, 2009). At Piedmont High, Hinson earned four
letters for head coaches Rusty Jester and Jeff Pucek. He led the Panthers
in tackles as a senior (152) and a junior (117). Hinson was an All-County
choice three times and an All-Conference pick two times. He was the
Piedmont team MVP and captain his senior year. His uncle and aunt are
Tony and Kim Baucom.

Jacob Lowder
Class: Senior
Position: OL
Hometown: Weddington, N.C.
High School:Weddington
Jacob Lowder and his 16 senior teammates are hoping to conclude their
Wingate careers with a South Atlantic Conference championship. Last
year, the Bulldogs averaged 31.1 points per game, second on the SAC
scoring offense charts. Lowder helped the Wingate offense average 241.1
passing yards per game, 154.2 rushing yards per game and 395.3 total
offense yards per game this season.A Weddington High honors graduate,
Lowder played his scholastic football for head coach Ed Susi. Lowder was
All-County (twice), All-Conference and All-Region for the Warriors. Lowder
concluded his Weddington career with 31 consecutive starts on the
offensive line. He was member of the wrestling and track teams at WHS.
He is the son of Bill and Vicki Lowder.

Blake Holmes is prepared to have a break-out season during his senior
campaign. Holmes had a tackle in a huge road win at Catawba (Oct. 24,
2009). In 2008, Holmes had 10 tackles. Wingate tied the school record for
victories in a season with eight 2008 conquests. Holmes recorded a
season-high three stops at Carson-Newman. During the 2005 campaign,
Holmes recorded 23 tackles (16 solo, seven assists) and two sacks as a
first-year Bulldog. He had a season-high eight tackles (five solo, three
assists) against Presbyterian. At Irmo High, Holmes was a letter winner in
football and basketball. He earned All-Area honors on the gridiron, while
serving as a football team captain. Holmes participated in the North-South
All-Star game following his football career. He is the son of George and
Cynthia Holmes.

RP Lopez looks to conclude his Bulldog career on a high note. In 2009, he
was fourth in the SAC in kick scoring with 46 points. Lopez was second in
the SAC with 40 extra points. Only Carson-Newman's Carlos Lopez (67)
nailed more PATs than RP Lopez. On the 2009 Wingate individual scoring
charts, Lopez was second to Vince Jordan (72 points). Lopez hit two-offour field goals on the season. He hit a 27-yarder against West Georgia
and a 26-yarder versus Lenoir-Rhyne. The Bulldogs won both games.
Lopez transferred to Wingate from Troy (Ala.) University. As a studentathlete at Lakeland (Fla.) High School, Lopez was a member of the football
and basketball teams. During his career, the Dreadnaughts and head
coach Bill Castle won the Florida state football championship in 2004. On
the basketball court, Lopez earned team most improved honors his
sophomore season. RP is the son of Dr. Raul Lopez and Pam Page.
Brock Mueller started every game he played for the Bulldogs in 2009 (left
guard). His tireless work allowed Wingate to stabilize its position as one
of the top offenses in the South Atlantic Conference. Mueller and his OLine comrades helped Vince Jordan amass a career-high 967 rushing
yards in 2009. Jordan was third in the SAC with his 96.7 yards per game.
Wingate averaged 395.3 total offense yards per game last year. The
Bulldogs finished second in the SAC in scoring offense (33.6 points per
game) and passing offense (241.1 yards per game) in 2009. While at
Bakersfield College, Mueller helped the Renegades win the conference
championship. He was an All-Conference pick while at Bakersfield. At
Liberty High School, Mueller was voted the most improved offensive
lineman following his junior and senior seasons. He was an All-League
and All-Area choice, helping Liberty win the conference title. Brock is the
son of Bill Mueller. His father played football at Fresno State University.

Tyrone Scott's ability to change directions quickly led to three pass breakups and 16 tackles for the Bulldog defense in 2009. Scott had a careerhigh nine total tackles in a victory over North Greenville (Sept. 5, 2009).
He had three stops in a season-opening triumph over West Georgia.
At White Oak High School, Scott was a member of the football, basketball
and track teams. He earned a trophy case-full of awards, including AllConference and All-County in both football and basketball. An All-Area
choice in football, Scott led the team in receptions and tackles his senior
year. In track, he was All-Region and All-State. Scott was born in Naples,
Italy. He is a youth counselor at his home church. Tyrone is the son of
Tyrone and Louise Scott.

Justin Squirewell picked up his degree at Wingate's May 2010
commencement exercises. He hopes to lead the Bulldogs to a South
Atlantic Conference championship in 2010. Squirewell's leadership will be
important for a young Bulldog secondary. At Southwest Dekalb High School,
Squirewell was captain of the football team and co-captain of the track team
his junior and senior years. He was a two-time letter winner in track and
three-time letter winner in football. Justin is the son of Alvin and Deborah
Squirewell.

Terrence Stephens

High School: Lighthouse Christian
Terrence Stephens earned a spot on the pre-season All-SAC team in 2010
(as voted by the league's sports information directors). Stephens was
second on the Wingate team charts with 62 tackles last year. He added
two tackles for loss, one interception, one forced fumble and six pass
break-ups. Stephens had seven stops (six solo) in Wingate's 56-35 road
victory over Mars Hill (Nov. 7, 2009). He recorded eight tackles in
Wingate's 42-31 nationally-televised triumph over Tusculum (Sept. 24,
2009).Stephens and his Eastern Arizona College teammates earned the
distinction as the number one defense in the NJCAA. At Lighthouse
Christian School, Stephens was a member of the football, basketball and
track teams. In football, he was All-Conference and All-Far East as a
senior. He earned the same honors in basketball, adding All-State laurels
to his trophy case. Stephens was team captain and team MVP in football
as a senior. He led the team in rushing and tackles. He was a Principal's
List and Honor Roll student in high school. Terrence is the son of Nelson
and Veda Stephens.

Philip Thomas was a leader in the receiving corps for the Bulldogs, grabbing
25 catches for 379 yards in 2009. Thomas had four TD catches last year. At
Carson-Newman, he posted six catches for 102 yards and one score.
Thomas is Wingate's holder on field goals and PATs. He had four special
teams' tackles in 2009. His accomplishments on and off the field earned him
the Charlotte Touchdown Club Scholarship. A team captain, Thomas is very
active in the Campus Outreach at Wingate University. A SAC
Commissioner's Honor Roll student, Thomas is also a member of Wingate's
Academic top 10. He is a tutor in Wingate's Academic Resource Center
(ARC). At Milton Hershey School, Thomas was a letter winner in football,
wrestling and baseball. He was a second team All-Conference selection in
football his senior season. During his career, Milton Hershey won division
championships in football and wrestling. Thomas was a district qualifier in
wrestling. Also, he was a Mid-Penn Capital Division All-Star team pick in
baseball. Thomas was active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Milton
Hershey. Philip Thomas is the son of Michael Thomas and Laurie
Lichlyter.

Nelson Woods posted 378 yards and seven touchdowns for the highpowered Wingate offense in 2009. He contributed to the air attack with six
catches for 39 yards. In a nationally-televised victory at Tusculum (Sept.
25, 2009), Woods had a field day with 17 rushes for 133 yards and three
touchdowns. The three visits to pay dirt equal his career-best contest.At
Burns High School in Lawndale, N.C., Woods was a three-year varsity
letter winner in football. In addition, Woods was the team MVP and an AllStar team selection. He earned awards as a running back and a free
safety for the Burns Bulldogs. Nelson is the son of Sandra Woods and
Willie Moss.

Marquise Allen did not play in 2009. In 2008, he caught seven passes for
99 yards as a sophomore. Allen had two receptions as a true freshman,
including a 17-yard TD reception versus Newberry (Oct. 20, 2007). Allen is
an active member of Campus Outreach at Wingate. He played his high
school football at Porter Ridge, earning defensive MVP honors his senior
year. Allen was a two-time All-Conference performer. He also served as a
team captain. Allen was a member of the National Honor Society at Porter
Ridge. Marquise Allen is the son of Diane Allen and Aaron McDonald.

Mike Arndt is a pre-season All-SAC selection for the Bulldogs. A two-year
starter (right tackle) for the high-octane Bulldog offense, Arndt helped
Wingate place second in the SAC in scoring offense (33.6 points per
game) and passing offense (241.1 yards per game) in 2009. Wingate
averaged 395.3 total offense yards per game last year. Thanks to Arndt's
efforts, the Bulldogs compiled 5.7 yards per play in 2009. During his high
school career at Weddington, Arndt earned All-County, All-Conference, AllRegion and All-State honors. He was a co-captain. In addition, he earned
the Warriors' leadership award. He is the son of Mike and Teri Arndt.

Baker posted 15 tackles in 2008. He had six stops in a road victory at
Brevard. Baker forced a fumble in a home win over Tusculum. In 2007, he
had eight tackles as a first-year Bulldog. He notched three tackles and a
pass break-up in a home victory over Brevard. Baker recorded two tackles
each against UNC Pembroke and Newberry. Baker was a three-sport
standout at Manning High School, earning letters in football, basketball and
track. As a senior, he led Manning in interceptions with six. Baker returned
two of the interceptions for touchdowns. He is the son of Terry Baker and
the late Audrey Baker.

Tony Davis posted a tackle against Brevard College during the 2009
season. The Bulldogs picked up a victory against the Tornadoes. Davis
played his high football at Luella High School for head coach Paul
Burgdorf. Davis was an All-Area linebacker as a sophomore and an
honorable mention choice as a senior. He led the Area in tackles his junior
campaign, notching 56 solo stops. Davis was a two-year defensive
captain for the Luella Lions. He had 67 tackles as a middle linebacker for
MacMurray (Ill.) College in 2007. Davis is the son of Cathy Davis.

Cody Haffly completed 179-of-314 passes for 2281 yards and 21
touchdowns last year. He had only six interceptions on the season. Haffly
had three games with three touchdowns passes and three games with two
TD strikes. On the 2009 SAC charts, he was third in the SAC in pass
efficiency (136.3). Haffly ended his first season as Wingate's starter in a
big way, completing 18-of-30 passes for 293 yards and a career-high five
touchdown passes as the Bulldogs picked up road victory at Mars Hill 5635. He also rushed for one TD against the Lions. His teammates elected
him a captain for the 2010 season. Haffly is a SAC Commissioner's Honor
Roll student and a member of the Bulldog Academic top 10. He is active in
Wingate's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). At Luella High, he
played football and baseball. His football coach was Paul Burgdorf. Haffly
compiled 6,500 passing yards and a 62 percent completion rate during his
high school career. He was a first team All-Conference performer in
football as a senior. Haffly led the county in passing for three years in a
row. He was voted best offensive player two years each in football and
baseball. Cody is the son of Theresa and Scott McClellan and Robert
Haffly.

Clayton Hazeltine's speed and strength led to his 12 tackles and one
interception for the 2009 Bulldog defense. Last year, he forced a fumble against
West Georgia in a season-opening victory. Hazeltine had four tackles against
North Greenville. The Bulldog defensive coaches look forward to having
Hazeltine for an entire season in 2010. Hazeltine was a member of the football,
weight-lifting and basketball teams at Cardinal Mooney. As a senior, he was an
All-State selection in football. Hazeltine helped the Cardinals win the regional
and district titles, while serving as team captain. A two-time football team MVP,
he led the team in receiving (10 touchdowns), tackles (82) and interceptions
(10) his final season. He is the son of Stephen and Michelle Hazeltine.

team tackles for the Bulldogs last season. Jones returned two kicks during the

West Henderson High School. He served as a two-year football team captain
for the Falcons. Jones was an All-Conference football selection following his
junior and senior seasons. A solid student, Jones earned A/B Honor Roll
distinction while at West Henderson. Sean is the son of Chuck and Lynn
Jones.

Vince Jordan compiled 967 yards rushing yards and 12 touchdowns during his
sophomore campaign. A first team All-SAC selection, Jordan averaged 6.2
yards per carry. In Wingate's 2009 opener, Jordan rushed for 215 yards and
three touchdowns in the victory over West Georgia. Jordan rushed for 150
yards and two touchdowns in a 42-17 SAC road victory over Catawba. In the
Mars Hill contest, he posted 123 yards and two scores in a season-ending
triumph. Jordan had 1,068 all-purpose yards in 2009. At West Montgomery
High, Jordan was a member of the football, wrestling and track teams. He
played football for head coach Elbert Thomas. Jordan played in the Shrine
Bowl following an illustrious career at WMHS. An All-State performer, he was
the N.C. 1A state championship game outstanding offensive player his final
season. Jordan earned All-Conference honors as a running back and a punter
his senior campaign, while also serving as a team captain. As a junior, he was
one of only two players in Warrior school history to lead the team in rushing and
tackles. Jordan is the son of Robert and Wendy Jordan.

Richie Kazazian made a statement in 2009, as he recorded 42 tackles and
forced two fumbles. His six tackles for loss showcase his ability to penetrate the
offensive line. Kazazian had 11 tackles at Carson-Newman (Oct. 31, 2009). He
had seven stops in a victory over North Greenville. Kazazian recorded six
tackles in a nationally-televised SAC road win over Tusculum. Kazazian earned
numerous honors in football at Apex High School. As a senior, he was team
MVP, defensive player of the year and coaches commitment award winner for
the Cougars. Kazazian was an All-Conference selection during his final
campaign. He has had cousins play college football at Massachusetts-Amherst
and Rutgers. Richie Kazazian is the son of Rich and Gina Kazazian.

Austin Lowe was named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic AllDistrict III football first team (college division), selected by the College Sports
Information Directors of America. Last year, Lowe helped the Bulldog
offensive average 33.6 points per game, second on the SAC scoring offense
charts. Wingate's offense recorded 241.1 passing yards per game, 154.2
rushing yards per game and 395.3 total offense yards per game last season.
Lowe is a SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll student and a member of the
Wingate Academic top 10. He played three seasons at West Rowan. A
varsity O-Line starter as a senior, Lowe earned the Coaches Award for
Achievement. His final season, Lowe was All-Conference and All-County. A
Shrine Bowl top 100 candidate, he was picked to play in the N.C. East-West
All-Star game. In the classroom, Lowe was an honor graduate and scholarathlete selection at West Rowan. He was a member of the National Honor
Society and the Latin Club. He is the son of John and Donna Lowe.

Sam O'Keeffe joined the Bulldog football family in the spring of 2008. He
will have a chance to make an impact as a punter for the blue-and-gold.
O'Keeffe played football, soccer and tennis at Alexander Central High
School. He was MVP and captain for the ACHS soccer team. O'Keeffe
was recognized as the special teams Player of the Week in football. The
son of Paul and Lorraine O'Keeffe, Sam O'Keeffe was born in Cowra,
New South Wales, Australia.

Marino Pignataro joins the Bulldogs as a transfer from Liberty University. While
a student-athlete at St. Francis Prep, Pignataro was a member of the varsity
football and track and field teams. As a senior football player, he won the Most
Unselfish and Dedicated Player Award. Pignataro was presented the Brian
Murphy Scholarship Award as well. He was a defensive back and linebacker for
head football coach Vincent O'Connor. The younger brother of Wingate
football alum Joe Pignataro, Marino is the son of Marino and Mary Pignataro.
His father played college football.

Ivan Raymond gives the Wingate quarterbacks a reliable target for the 2010
season. In Wingate's 2010 spring game, Raymond caught two passes. One of
his spring grabs resulted in a touchdown. In 2008, Raymond and the Bulldogs
finished second in the SAC in passing offense (238.4 yards per game). Wingate
was number nine in the NCAA Division II in the same category. While a studentathlete at Easley High School, Raymond played football and basketball for the
Green Wave. A football team captain as a senior, Raymond earned All-County
and All-Conference honors at different times during his career. On the basketball hardwood, Raymond and his Easley teammates won the regional title. Ivan
is the son of Michael and Jane Raymond. He has five brothers and sisters.

Josh Patch posted five tackles for the 2009 Bulldogs. He had three stops

Year for the Mustangs. He was All-County in football as a senior. Patch
earned All-County and All-Conference laurels in track and wrestling as a
junior. He was fifth in the state in wrestling. ERHS earned titles in football and
track during Patch's illustrious career. He is the son of Craig and Theresa

10. Off the field, he belongs to the Sport Science Majors Club. Reese was a
member of the football and track teams at C.A. Erwin High School. He was AllConference his final two football seasons. Reese was captain of both the
gridiron and track teams his final season. He earned Erwin's football offensive
MVP award as a senior. Reese was a member of the Beta Club and the
National Honor Society at Erwin. Thomas is the son of Marty and Kathy
Reese.

Buster Smith

Buster Smith's size and ability to fill running lanes helped him secure seven
tackles in his first season for the Bulldogs. Smith had three tackles each against
North Greenville and Brevard. He added a single stop versus Newberry.
While at Ragsdale, Smith earned four varsity letters in football. He tallied 182
total tackles in his career, including 149 solo stops and 7.5 sacks. He led
Ragsdale in tackles and sacks during his senior season. Smith earned many
awards, including All-Conference and All-County. He was a member of the
football, basketball and baseball teams at Ragsdale, serving as a team captain
in each sport his final season. Smith joined the Bulldogs as a transfer from
Western Carolina University. Smith is the son of Kim Smith, Sr. and Scarlett
Smith.

Jack Taylor's speed and ability to get around offensive linemen helped him
record 35 tackles, six tackles for loss and three QB sacks in 2009. In addition,
Taylor forced a fumble and recovered a fumble last year. Taylor had seven
tackles in a nationally-televised SAC victory at Tusculum. He had four tackles
on three separate occasions, including a season-opening triumph over West
Georgia.Taylor posted 446 career tackles at Keystone Heights High School for
head coach Chuck Dickinson. As a senior, Taylor and his teammates helped
KHHS compile a 9-1 overall record and a state play-off appearance. Taylor led
the area with his 154 tackles. The Indians' team MVP his senior season, Taylor
was named All-State, All-County, All-Area and All-First Coast following his final
campaign. As a junior, he was All-State, All-County and All-Area. Taylor was an
All-Area choice as a sophomore. He was also a member of the Keystone
Heights weightlifting team. A National Honor Society member, Jack Taylor is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Taylor.

Ed Trussell is one of the most versatile members of the Wingate roster. He can
play tight end or fullback for the Bulldogs. Trussell saw action in three games for
the 2009 edition of the Bulldogs.Trussell was a member of the football and track
teams at Lexington High School. His football coach was Bart Miller. Trussell
earned All-Conference laurels in football. A team captain in football, he won the
team's Loyalty and Leadership Award for his efforts. An honor graduate from
Lexington, Trussell was a member of the National Honor Society as well. At
Wingate, Trussell has spent time as a member of the Campus Outreach
organization and the University Wind Ensemble. Ed is the son of Gene and
Mary Nell Trussell.

Josh Yon helped anchor the defensive line of the Bulldogs by recording 3.5
tackles for a loss and 26 total tackles for the 2009 campaign. Yon started 10 of
10 games for Wingate last year. He posted six tackles each against North
Greenville and Newberry and five stops against Brevard. His strength will be
very important as the Bulldogs look to establish their presence against
opponents' running games.Yon was a three-sport athlete (football, wrestling,
track) for the Kings Mountain High School Mountaineers. His football coach
was Dave Farquharson. Yon earned the most outstanding lineman award two
years in a row. He was All-Conference two years and All-Gaston Gazette one
year on the gridiron. An N.C. Scholar, Yon earned many honors in wrestling. He
was All-Conference and All-Region two years each. Yon was named to the AllState team as a senior, gaining the KMHS outstanding wrestler award as well.
He spent three semesters at Appalachian State prior to joining the Bulldog
family.

Casey Augustine is a hard worker who gives Wingate depth on the offensive
line. In 2009, he helped the Bulldogs finish second in the SAC in scoring offense
(33.6 points per game) and passing offense (241.1 yards per game). Wingate
averaged 395.3 total offense yards per game last year. Augustine is active in
Campus Outreach at Wingate. At Watauga High, Augustine was All-Conference,
All-Region, All-Area and All-State his senior season for coach Adrian Snow. He
earned All-Conference, All-Area and All-Region two years in a row. The
Pioneers won the sectional title Augustine's junior and senior seasons. He is the
son of Andy and Kelly Augustine.

Chris Bowden was an excellent addition to the Wingate line-up as a true
freshman, providing the Bulldogs with 30 receptions for 360 yards. He caught
six passes for 58 yards and one touchdown in a wild 50-49 victory over LenoirRhyne (Oct. 10, 2009). He had two games with four catches and four games
with three receptions. Bowden's consistent ability to hold on to the ball will be a
key component to the Bulldog offense. Bowden was a member of the football,
basketball and track teams at Mary Persons High. An All-Region selection in
football, Bowden broke the school records for receptions (42) and receiving
yards (789) his senior season. He received the most improved award in both
basketball and football. Chris Bowden is the son of Willie Head and Lisa
Bowden. He has four brothers and seven sisters.

Ernest Bridges recorded a tackle against Newberry during the 2009
season. His hard work will pay dividends for the Bulldogs during the fall
2010 campaign. Bridges was a redshirt during the 2008 campaign. An
honors graduate at West Stanly, Bridges played football and track for head
coach Rich Williams. Bridges was All-Conference and All-County two
years each, earning a spot in the Shrine Bowl following his senior
campaign. He had 29 sacks his final two seasons for the Colts. West
Stanly advanced to the state play-offs his junior and senior years. He is
the son of Ernest and Cordovan Bridges.

Josh Clawson provided several timely catches as a true freshman wide
receiver. He had three catches against Catawba and four grabs against
Carson-Newman. Clawson completed his freshman season with eight catches
for 70 yards. Clawson will be a receiver to watch in upcoming seasons.
Clawson played his high school football for head coach Jet Turner at Clover.
He was team MVP and captain in football his senior season. CHS won the
state football championship in 2007. Clawson was a member of the basketball
and baseball teams as well. Clawson also earned MVP honors in basketball
two years in a row. He is the son of Randy and Tracey Clawson.

Austin Clemons posted a tackle in Wingate's 2009 victory over North
Greenville. He saw action in five contests for the 2009 Bulldogs. The defensive
coaches look for Clemons to play an expanded role this year. At Fairmont Prep
Academy, he played three sports (football, basketball, baseball). His football
coach was Bobby Mendoza. Clemons was football and basketball MVP his
senior year. An All-Conference pick in football, Clemons led the conference in
receiving yards and tackles his final season. His team made the play-offs his
senior year. He is the son of Randy Clemons and Karen Summers.

Robert Fletcher was second in the SAC with 83 tackles last season. He had
three defensive touchdowns (two fumble recoveries, one interception) as the
Bulldogs led the SAC in turnover margin (plus-15) in 2009. Fletcher had two
interceptions, four pass break-ups, five fumble recoveries and three forced
fumbles last year. He had 11 solo tackles, two forced fumbles and one fumble
return for a touchdown in Wingate's wild 50-49 road victory over Lenoir-Rhyne.
In his first game as a Bulldog, Fletcher set a school-record with a 98-yard
interception return for a score as Wingate rallied for a 38-17 home victory over
West Georgia. He was honored as SAC Defensive Player of the Week
following Wingate's victories over LRU and West Georgia. The league's SIDs
voted him to the pre-season All-SAC team in 2010. He played football, basketball and track for the Lancaster Bruins. A football team captain, Fletcher was AllCounty his junior and senior seasons on the gridiron. As a senior, he had 32
tackles, three interceptions and 12 pass receptions. His basketball coach was
Wingate alumnus Ricardo Priester. A solid student, Fletcher was a member of
the Beta Club at Lancaster. In addition, he was a two-year member of the
Omega Psi Phi fraternity. Fletcher is the son of Robert Fletcher and Debora
Robinson.

Raymond Grant gives the Bulldog linebacker corps a strong work ethic. He will
have a chance to make a big impact before the 2010 season concludes.Grant
spent four years in the Air Force prior to his time as a Bulldog. During his high
school, he was a standout student-athlete at Burns High School. Grant played
linebacker for the BHS Bulldogs and head coach Ron Greene. Grant won the
program's Top Dog Award, presented to the number one all-around performer
in the weight room. Grant is the son of Raymond Grant, Jr. and Faye Cook.

Robert Kepley

Robert Kepley will have an opportunity to make an impact on Wingate's
defensive fortunes during the 2010 season. An excellent student, Kepley
earned a spot in the Bulldog Academic top 10 for the 2009-10 academic year.
He was also named to the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll. At West Rowan
High School, Kepley was All-Conference, All-County, co-captain and team MVP
as a senior football student-athlete. The Falcons won the conference and the
county championships each year during Kepley's career (three titles each),
compiling a 35-4 overall record in the process. As a senior, Kepley had 132
tackles. He was a National Honor Society member who was ranked in the top
20 of his class at WRHS. Kepley is the son of Jeff and Susan Kepley.

fall season. The Bulldog coaches look to Mays to make an immediate impact

as a football student-athlete at Burns High School. His head coach was Ron
Greene. Brandon is the son of Brent and Teri Mays.

Garrett Mills will have a chance to see significant minutes for the Bulldog
offensive line in 2010. In 2009, Mills and the Bulldog offensive line allowed
Wingate to post huge numbers, including 33.6 points per game (second on the
SAC scoring charts). Wingate's offense posted 241.1 passing yards per game,
154.2 rushing yards per game and 395.3 total offense yards per game last
season.Mills was a member of the football, basketball and track teams at
Forest Hills. His football coach was the legendary Johnny Lowery. The Yellow
Jacket football team won the conference title his sophomore, junior and senior
seasons, making deep runs in the state play-offs each year. A football team
captain, Mills was first team All-Rocky River Conference his senior year. He
was also a two-time All-Union County performer. Garrett Mills is the son of
Bobby and Sandy Mills.

Andrew Nallenweg

Andrew Nallenweg's size and ability to contribute lead blocks for the Bulldog
running attack was instrumental. Thanks to his efforts, Wingate averaged 154.2
rushing yards per game last year. Nallenweg also recorded a timely catch for a
22-yard gain in a big SAC road victory at Catawba (Oct. 24, 2009). He earned
a spot on the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll during the spring of 2010.
Nallenweg was a member of the football, basketball and track teams at C.A.
Erwin High School. He was selected as a member of the N.C. Shrine Bowl
football team. The league defensive player-of-the-year as a senior, Nallenweg
recorded 82 tackles in his final season. He posted 230 career tackles during his
three-year varsity career. Nallenweg was All-Conference in football three years
in a row, earning All-Western N.C. honors after his senior season. In track, he
was team MVP as a senior and most valuable thrower following his sophomore
and junior seasons. A two-year All-Conference performer in track, Nallenweg
won the regional shot put and discus title as a senior. He helped the Erwin
basketball team win the conference title. A Beta Club member, Andrew
Nallenweg is the son of Rich and Ronda Nallenweg.

Josh Pettiford is a two-sport participant for the Bulldogs (football, baseball). His
off-season work will pay dividends for the Wingate defense this year. An A/B
Honor Roll student at Orange High School, Pettiford was a member of the
football and baseball teams for the Panthers. He was an All-Conference middle
linebacker as a junior and an All-Conference defensive lineman as a senior. A
two-year football co-captain, Pettiford led the Panthers in tackles and tackles for
loss as a junior. OHS won the N.C. state 2A baseball championship his senior
season. Josh Pettiford is the son of Sheila Riley.

Jared Seate

Jared Seate supplied the Bulldogs with 20 total tackles and one sack last year.
His ability to make clutch tackles helped him record nine tackles in the open
field. Seate recorded a quarterback sack in a huge SAC road victory at Mars
Hill (Nov. 7, 2009). He had six tackles in the MHC game and seven stops in a
triumph over Brevard (Oct. 3, 2009). At Olympic High, Seate was a member of
the football, wrestling and baseball teams. His football coach was Barry
Shuford. Seate was football MVP three years and wrestling MVP one year for
the Trojans. A two-year team captain in football and wrestling, Seate was AllQueen City Conference in football (three times), wrestling (two times) and
baseball (once). The OHS Trojans won league titles in wrestling and baseball
during his tenure. Statistically, Seate had a school-record 413 career tackles.
His 126 career wrestling victories were second in the state. An honor roll
student at Olympic, Jared Seate is the son of John and Joy Seate.

Matthew Sierk booted three kick-offs for an average of 48.3 yards per kick in
2009. Sierk saw action against Newberry, Catawba and Mars Hill during the
2009 campaign. At Polk County High School, Sierk played football, basketball
and soccer. His football coach was Bruce Ollis. Sierk earned team awards in
soccer and basketball, serving as a captain in both sports his senior season.
He was All-Conference, All-Region and All-Area in soccer his final campaign. As
a junior, Sierk helped the Wolverines win conference and sectional titles in
basketball. Matthew is the son of Dave and Shari Sierk. His dad played
college basketball.

was a member of the football and outdoor track teams at Polk County High. His
football coach was Bruce Ollis. Simpson was the most valuable defensive back
his junior and senior seasons for the Wolverines. He was a two-time AllConference performer in football, helping Polk County win the league title in
2007. Simpson was All-Conference and All-Region in track. In the classroom,
Simpson was a National Honor Roll member. He is the son of Patricia
Simpson and the late Milton Simpson.

Brandon Williams is ready to make his mark on the Wingate defensive line. At
Rockingham County High School, Williams was a member of the football,
wrestling and track teams. He was a football team co-captain for head coach
Lin Stadler. Williams won MVP awards in football and the most improved
award in wrestling. He was All-Conference honorable mention in both football
and wrestling. Williams led RCHS in tackles and tackles for loss as a senior.
He won the outstanding academic achievement award. Brandon Williams is the
son of Danny Lee Williams and Aletha Corbett.

Mark Clyburn spent the 2009 season as a redshirt for the Wingate football and
basketball teams. Clyburn graduated from Forest Hills High. Clyburn played
tight end for head coach Johnny Lowery. He was also the center on the
Rocky River (2A) Conference regular season champion basketball team.
Clyburn served as team captain in both basketball and football during his days
with the Yellow Jackets. An All-RRC selection in basketball and football, he has
also earned All-Union County football team honors from The Enquirer-Journal.

Iredell track and field team for three years. McCrae won the French Department
Award while at South Iredell. Derrick is the son of Rodney and Ronda

Mike Miller was a redshirt during the 2009 Bulldog football season. Miller was a
member of the football and wrestling teams for the Sumter High School
Fighting Gamecocks. On the gridiron, he was All-Area and All-Region. Miller
was the Big 16 (lower state) Lineman of the Year as a senior. A two-sport team
captain, Miller helped Sumter win regional titles in both football and wrestling
during his career. The Fighting Gamecocks were the state runners-up in
football his senior season. He was All-Area and All-Region in wrestling,
compiling an individual record of 75-20 his final two seasons. An honor student
at Sumter, Miller is the son of Michael Miller and Dr. Shirrie Miller.

Moss helped the Wonders advance to the 2008 state 3A championship game.
Moss was a starter at linebacker for A.L. Brown during his senior campaign. He
averaged four tackles per game for one of the top defenses in the state. Moss
is the son of Fred and Lillian Moss.

Robbie Nallenweg

Bulldog Freshmen
Robbie Nallenweg completed six-of-12 passes for 53 yards and one touchdown during Wingate's 2010 spring game. He did not participate during the
2009 season, as he spent the campaign as a redshirt. One of the top students
on the Bulldog roster, Nallenweg earned a spot on the Bulldog Academic top
10 and the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll in 2010. Nallenweg was an AllConference quarterback who had 190 completions for 2,731 passing yards
during his senior season at C.A. Erwin. His 2,731 passing yards was tops in
the area. Nallenweg led the conference with 25 touchdowns. His football coach
at Erwin was Mike Sexton. In addition to his football exploits, Nallenweg was a
member of the basketball and tennis teams at C.A. Erwin. He helped the Erwin
basketball team win the conference title. Nallenweg won the Wendy's High
School Heisman. A Beta Club member, Robbie Nallenweg is the son of Rich
and Ronda Nallenweg.

In the 2010 spring game, Reid was one of 12 receivers to catch a pass. Reid
snagged two receptions for 26 yards in the annual event. Reid was a member
of the football, wrestling and baseball teams at A.L. Brown. His football coach
was Ron Massey. As a senior, Reid had 21 receptions for 509 yards and
seven touchdowns. Thanks to the efforts of Reid and his teammates, the
Wonders advanced to the 3A state championship game in 2008. A two-year
captain in both football and wrestling, Reid was A.L. Brown's most improved
football player following his senior season. He was an All-Conference choice
(two years) in wrestling. Colby Reid is the son of Darrin Reid and Leigh Allen.

team. Worthington was a standout student-athlete at Bishop Kenny High

lineman and team captain, Worthington led the team to a 7-3 record as a
senior. An All-First Coast selection, he started at left tackle in the state all-star

Joe Reich
Wingate University head football coach Joe Reich helped the Bulldogs compile a solid 7-3 overall
record in 2009. The Bulldogs finished second in the South Atlantic Conference race with a 5-2 league
ledger. Seven players earned All-SAC laurels, while return specialist Perry Floyd was named to the
All-American second team by Don Hansen's Football Gazette.
Reich is the all-time winningest football coach in the school's senior college history. He is 57-40 overall
in nine Wingate seasons. On August 25, 2007, Wingate defeated the Fayetteville State Broncos 34-26,
giving Reich more victories than his senior college predecessors.
Reich is only the fourth head coach in school history. Wingate's 2009 senior class achieved a new
school record, compiling 30 career victories (two previous classes had 28 wins each). The 2009
Bulldogs received votes in the final AFCA poll.
The 2008 Bulldogs earned an 8-3 overall and a 5-3 SAC ledger. Wingate was ranked in the top 25 of
the NCAA Division II for seven separate weeks, charting as high as number 15 in the AFCA poll.
Wingate finished the 2007 season 7-4 overall, earning an AFCA ranking for five weeks. The Bulldogs
reached number 18 in the AFCA poll.
All-Americans Kenwin Cummings (N.Y. Jets) and Chris Conklin (Carolina) signed NFL free agent contracts during the summer of 2008.
Cornerback David Jones was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL draft (145th overall selection). Jones
signed a three-year contract in June. He finished the 2007 NFL season with the Cincinnati Bengals (He will play the 2010 season with the
Jacksonville Jaguars). A 2007 Hula Bowl participant, Jones was a D2Football.com and AFCA All-American his senior season.
Wingate currently has four players in professional football. In addition to Cummings and Jones, Donald Brown and John Bowman are playing
in the Canadian Football League. Bowman's Montreal club won the 97th Grey Cup championship in 2009. Brown is a member of the Winnipeg
Blue Bombers.
In 2006, Wingate placed a school-record 10 players on the All-South Atlantic Conference first and second teams. Wingate equaled its school
record for senior college wins in a season, compiling an 8-3 overall mark. Wingate's five SAC wins set a new school record.
When Reich and his staff arrived in 2000, the team had completed a 1-10 season under the previous regime. The Bulldogs compiled an 8-3
overall record in 2004, 2006 and 2008. Reich was named SAC Coach of the Year in 2004.
Academics are very important to Reich and his staff. In 2006, senior defensive end Frank Marino was named to the ESPN Academic AllAmerica® football first team (college division), selected by CoSIDA. Marino is the first Wingate football student-athlete to receive Academic AllAmerica® laurels. Offensive linemen Greg Keziah and Cam LeGrand are both three-time ESPN Academic All-District III football first team
selections. In 2009, tight end Ryan Webber and offensive lineman Austin Lowe received Academic All-District III distinction. Thirteen Bulldogs
earned SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll laurels in 2009.
Wingate is making noise on the national scene, as the Bulldogs were ranked in both the AFCA and D2Football.com polls at various times during
the 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006 and 2004 seasons. Wingate's 42-31 road victory over Tusculum was televised to a live national audience on
Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009.
Reich spent eight years as an assistant coach at the University of Buffalo. Prior to Buffalo, he was an assistant coach at his alma mater
Gettysburg College and a graduate assistant coach at Georgia Tech under Bobby Ross.
Reich was the defensive coordinator, punt block and return unit coach at Buffalo during Buffalo's transition from Division I-AA to Division I. His
Buffalo defense recorded the school's first shutout in 10 years during the 1999 season.
During the 1996 season, Buffalo achieved its first-ever national ranking in The Sports Network Top 25 poll. The Bulls were ranked no. 25 for two
consecutive weeks. His 1996 punt block unit had 15 blocked, partially blocked or no attempt punts. Reich witnessed two transitions at Buffalo, as
he was very instrumental in Buffalo's move from NCAA Division III to NCAA Division I-AA.
During his time at Gettysburg College, he coached five players who earned All-Centennial Conference or All-Eastern Collegiate Athletic
Conference honors. As the graduate assistant coach at Georgia Tech, he worked under former University of Maryland and Detroit Lions head
coach Bobby Ross as well as 1999 American Football Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year Ralph Friedgen.
Reich played offensive line at Gettysburg from 1984-87, earning a B.A. degree in Mathematics in 1987. Reich earned All-Centennial Conference
honors his senior season at Gettysburg. He played his high school football at Cedar Crest High School in Lebanon, Pa. Reich's
father was a head coach at Lebanon High School and Lebanon Valley College. Reich and his wife Deirdre have a son
(Shane) and two daughters (Colleen and Lindsey).

Robert Brown was promoted to
assistant head coach in 2010. The
upcoming campaign is his eighth
season as a member of the Bulldog
coaching staff. In addition to his
duties as assistant head coach,
Brown is the passing game
coordinator and the quarterbacks coach. Brown serves as the
Academic Coordinator, managing the
program's Academic Success Program. He also monitors the Bulldog
kick-off return team.
In 2009, Brown helped Wingate place second on the South Atlantic
Conference passing offense charts with 241.1 yards per game. The
Bulldogs were also second in the league in scoring offense (33.6
points per game). Wingate was third in the league in total offense
(395.3 yards per game).
Five Bulldogs caught 20 or more passes, led by All-SAC performer
Delric Ellington and his 47 grabs for 558 yards. Ellington scored five
touchdowns. All-American return specialist Perry Floyd caught 32
passes for 389 yards and five scores.Floyd and tight end Ryan
Webber joined Ellington on the All-SAC teams.
Wide receiver Dan Brooks led the SAC in receptions per game (5.55)
and receiving yards per game (73.5) in 2006. Quarterback Anthony
Metzelaars led the league in passing yards per game (251.5) and
total offense per game (245.7). Metzelaars was 16th in the NCAA
Division II in total offense.
During the 2001 and 2002 seasons, Brown was an assistant coach at
Valparaiso (Ind.) University. He was the wide receivers coach for the
Crusaders. During his second season at Valparaiso, the Crusaders
were ranked fourth in total passing yards in the NCAA I-AA statistics.
Before arriving at Valparaiso, Brown worked for two years as offensive
coordinator at Saint Xavier University, located in Chicago. Saint
Xavier established school records for wins during both of Brown's
seasons. He was the offensive coordinator for Joliet (Ill.) Catholic
Academy for two years. Brown was the quarterbacks coach at the
University of Saint Francis (Ill.) from 1990-92.
As a player, Brown was a standout at the University of Saint Francis,
starting at quarterback from 1987-89. As a sophomore in 1987, Brown
earned NAIA All-District honors after helping St. Francis to their only
appearance in the NAIA national playoffs in the school's history.
Brown graduated from the University of Saint Francis with a Bachelor
of Arts in business administration in 1990. He earned his Master of
Arts in sports administration from Valparaiso University in 2002.

Wingate quarterback Cody Haffly completed 179-of-314 passes for
2281 yards and 21 touchdowns last year. He was second in the SAC
with his 21 scoring strikes and third on the league's pass efficiency
charts (136.3).
Brown helped quarterback JD Moore toss 23 touchdown passes in
2008. Moore finished his career with a total of 55 scoring tosses and
over 5,200 yards. Senior wide receiver Shawn Barrett led the 'Dogs
with 54 catches and eight touchdowns. Three teammates caught 25
passes or more. Barrett and Webber were All-SAC picks.
The Bulldog offense averaged 238.4 passing yards per game in 2008,
number two on the SAC charts. Wingate's kickoff return team
repeated as the number one KOR team in the SAC, averaging 26.4
yards per return. The Bulldogs were second in the nation in the same
category.
During the 2007 campaign, Moore set a new school record with 29
touchdown passes as both Barrett and tight end Chris Conklin
earned All-SAC honors under Brown's watch. A Carolina Panthers
signee, Conklin led SAC tight ends with 30 catches
second team All-SAC honors.

posted 58 tackles and two sacks
during his senior campaign, garnering

interceptions in the end zone twice snubbed out Pioneer scoring
opportunities and helped the Bulldogs secure a 42-31 nationally
televised road victory over Tusculum College in the 2009 SAC opener.

Wingate was fourth in the SAC in pass defense following the 2009
season. The Bulldogs allowed 182.1 passing yards per game in 2009.
Wingate finished the 2008 season ranked number one in pass
defense in the South Atlantic Conference and number nine nationally,
allowing only 155.9 passing yards per contest.
In 2006, Brown coached four skill position student-athletes to All-SAC
seasons. Wingate was listed at the top of the SAC charts (and number
eight in the NCAA Division II) with 273.8 passing yards per game in
2006.
James was promoted to defensive coordinator in March, 2008. He
spent the 2007 season (his first with the Bulldogs) as
the defensive backs coach and the strength
and conditioning coordinator.

James serves as the pro liaison for the Bulldog program. Wingate
currently has four players in professional football: Kenwin Cummings

A graduate of Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, James joined
the Bulldog staff after serving as the assistant head coach and
defensive coordinator at Susquehanna University. He was also in
charge of strength and conditioning for the SU Crusaders. James
recruited three All-Conference selections and one All-American in his
three seasons with the Crusader football program.
Before his time at Susquehanna, James was the defensive
coordinator and strength and conditioning coach at the University of
New Haven. Before New Haven, James was the defensive
coordinator at Drake University and Wilkes University. While at
Wilkes, the defense finished the season ranked number one in the
conference in every statistical category and number four nationally in
total defense. James has also served as defensive backs coach at
Lenoir-Rhyne University and Bloomsburg University.
Bobby James graduated from Bloomsburg with a B.S. degree in
exercise science. On the football field, James was a four-year starter,
two-time team captain and two-time All-Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference (PSAC) selection. He earned team defensive MVP honors
as well as establishing two school records for punt returns and kickoff
returns. James resides in Indian Trail with his wife Laurie.

Mike Long is entering his eighth

In 2010, Mike Long celebrates his
10th anniversary as a member of the
Bulldog football coaching staff. Long
also coaches Wingate's offensive line

In addition, he is the team's community service coordinator and camp
director.
Long helped five Bulldogs earn All-SAC honors in 2009. Lineman Ben
Benshoof, running back Vince Jordan and wide receiver Perry
Floyd (as a return specialist) were named to the first team. Tight end
Ryan Webber and wide receiver Delric Ellington earned second
team laurels.
Wingate was second in the SAC in scoring offense (33.6 points per
game) and passing offense (241.1 yards per game) during the 2009
season. The Bulldogs were third in the league in total offense (395.3
yards per game). Floyd was third in the nation in kick-off returns
(30.38 yards per return) and ninth in punt returns (15.07 yards per
return).
In 2008, the Bulldogs were number two in the SAC passing offense
category. Wingate averaged 238.4 passing yards per game in 2008,
placing the Bulldogs ninth on the NCAA Division II charts. Running
back Nelson Woods rushed for career-high 1238 yards on 248
carries in 2008. He led the SAC in both yards and carries. Woods,
Webber and wide receiver Shawn Barrett earned All-SAC laurels
following the 2008 campaign.
The SAC coaches named Woods the league's Offensive Freshman of
the Year in 2007. Tight end Chris Conklin was named first team AllSAC, while Woods and Barrett were selected second team All-SAC.
Conklin signed a free agent contract with the Carolina Panthers during
the summer of 2008.
Woods rushed for a league-best 1,174 yards in 2007. He was
Wingate's first 1000-yard rusher since Tracy Bowen ran for 1,274
yards in 1997. During the 2007 season, Woods eclipsed the 100-yard
mark during seven games. In addition, Wingate was third in the
league in passing offense, averaging over 242 yards passing per
game in 2007.
Five Bulldog offensive players were named to the All-SAC teams in
2006. Three-time All-SAC offensive lineman Brandon Manshack
earned a first team slot in 2006 after making the second team two
years in a row. Conklin and wide receiver Dan Brooks joined
Manshack on the first team All-SAC.
Long and the offensive coaches keep the Bulldogs near the top of the
SAC statistical rankings. The Wingate offense ranked second in the
SAC in total offense per game with 342.7 yards per contest in 2006.
Also, the Bulldog passing game was first among SAC teams (and
eighth in NCAA Division II) at 273.8 yards per game.
Brooks led the SAC in receptions per game (5.55) and receiving yards

Prior to joining coach Reich's staff at Wingate, Long was an assistant
football coach at Lehigh University. Long served as assistant offensive
line coach and assistant recruiting coordinator at Lehigh.
Long helped with the Lehigh special teams, including the punt (long
snappers), PAT/FG and kickoff teams. Also, he monitored the
academic and athletic progress of the offensive line and served as
Lehigh's head JV coach.
During Long's time at Lehigh, the Mountain Hawks won the Patriot
League championship in 1999 and 2000.

Also, Lehigh qualified for the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs in 1999 and
2000. The Mountain Hawks led the Patriot League in rushing in 2000.
three tackles for loss, three forced fumbles and two sacks. In 2003, he
had 33 tackles (23 solo), six sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss as a junior.
While a student-athlete at James Madison University, Long earned
four varsity letters as an offensive guard for the Dukes. He started two
seasons at JMU, as the team won the Lambert Cup in 1994 (his
senior season). Long was elected the team's most improved offensive
lineman during the spring of 1993. The Dukes qualified for the NCAA
Division I-AA playoffs in 1991 and 1994.
Tofanelli earned both his B.S. and MBA degrees from Wingate
University. A two-time ESPN Academic All-District III selection by
CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America), Tofanelli
received the Charlotte Touchdown Club Scholarship in the spring of
2004. He made the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll every semester
during his playing career.
Each August, Long coordinates Wingate's Special Olympics Field Day
for local athletes. He also leads character education for the Bulldog
sophomore class. Coach Long and his wife Erin have a daughter,
Olivia Anna Long. The Long family resides in Indian Trail.

Tony Tofanelli is enjoying his sixth
season as a member of the Wingate
University coaching staff in 2010. The
current campaign is his fourth year of
full-time status after two years as a
graduate assistant for the Bulldogs.
Tofanelli works with the Bulldog
defensive line. In addition, he is
Wingate's equipment manager, liaison
to the Football Alumni Association and fields and work study
coordinator.
In 2009, Tofanelli helped the Bulldog pass rushers as they charted
number two on the South Atlantic Conference pass defense efficiency
listing (112.5). Wingate allowed only 11 touchdown passes last
season, second fewest in the league.
In 2008, Wingate was ranked number one in pass defense in the
SAC. On the NCAA Division II charts, Wingate was number nine in
pass defense. Wingate tied the school record for victories in a season
with eight.
In 2007, Tofanelli coached Bulldog defensive end Kenwin Cummings
on his way to Don Hansen's Football Gazette NCAA Division II AllAmerica second team laurels. A two-time Hansen's All-America pick,
Cummings signed a free agent contract with the New York Jets during
the summer of 2008. The SAC football coaches voted Cummings a
first team All-SAC performer three seasons in a row.
In 2006, senior defensive end Frank Marino was named to the ESPN

by CoSIDA. Cummings was named to three different All-Region teams
and the All-SAC team.
Overman mentored linebacker Aaron
Plyler, a 2009 All-South Atlantic Conference pick. An anchor for the
Bulldog linebacker corps, Plyler finished the year with 63 tackles and
7.5 tackles for loss. Wingate's top six linebackers combined for 24
tackles for loss and 9.5 QB sacks. The Bulldog kick-off coverage team
led the SAC with a 39.3 yard net average.
In 2008, the Bulldog linebackers posted 14.5 sacks. Ben Hinson
finished second in the SAC in tackles with 105. Greg Harmon
finished fourth in the league with 96 tackles. In 2007, Overman and
the Bulldog coaching staff mentored senior linebacker Tyler Johnson
on his way to All-SAC second team defensive honors. Johnson led
the Bulldogs with 97 tackles that season and finished second in the
league in tackles per game.
During his Bulldog playing career, Overman started 33 games on the
defensive line for the Bulldogs in his four years. His Wingate statistics
ledger includes 179 tackles, 23.5 tackles for loss, 11 sacks and six
passes defended. Overman and his class of 2007 teammates set the
then-school record for career wins with 26, while tying the record for
wins in a season with eight on two separate occasions.
Overman played high school football for the late coach Tony Perrou
at Southern Alamance where he earned All-Conference and AllRegion honors in both his junior and senior season. Overman holds
both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Wingate. He currently
resides in Wingate.
As a senior, Tofanelli was named first team All-SAC as a long snapper
in 2004. In addition, he was a starter for the Bulldogs on the defensive
line. During his final season, Tofanelli recorded 33 tackles (23 solo),

Kirk Woodall enters his second year

Woodall will serve as the Defensive

the Bulldog football program. He will

A 2009 Wingate graduate, Softcheck majored in physical education
with a minor in sports management. Softcheck earned a spot on the
SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll during each year.
A three-year letter winner and two-year starter at wide receiver,
Softcheck completed his Bulldog career with 75 catches for 1003
yards and nine touchdowns. Softcheck and his senior teammates tied
both the career and single season records (at the time) for victories.
Also, Softcheck served as a team captain for the Bulldogs.
Softcheck played high school football for head coach Chris Barnes in
Wall, N.J., receiving All-Division and All-Conference honors. A
graduate student, Softcheck will be working towards his Master of Arts
in Education in Sport Administration.
Travis Knight
The 2003 Wingate University graduate majored in Communications.
He was a standout on the football team. During his playing career at
Wingate, Woodall spent time as a linebacker on defense and an H
back on offense.

While at Wingate, Woodall was a two-time President of the Kappa
Alpha fraternity. Most recently, he has worked in the solid waste
industry. Woodall has served on the boards of several non-profit
foundations in Atlanta and Savannah.
The Raymond M. Cash Press Box (at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R.
Martin Field) honors Woodall's family. The Raymond M. Cash Press
Box was dedicated on Aug. 27, 2005. A native of Smyrna, Ga., Kirk
currently lives in Marshville.
Jordan Softcheck

Jordan Softcheck is entering his
second year as an assistant football
coach at Wingate University. He
works with the wide receivers.
Softcheck has several other duties,
including offensive scouting, Lift-aThon coordinator and football liaison
with the University's student life and
housing departments.
Softcheck helped wide receiver
Delric Ellington earn a spot on the 2009 All-SAC second team.
Ellington topped the Wingate receiving charts with 47 receptions for
558 yards. He was fourth in the SAC with 4.7 receptions per game,
posting three 100-yard performances in the process.
In 2008, Knight worked with the Sun Valley linebackers. In 2009, he
was the defensive line coach. The Spartans made the N.C. 4A
play-offs both seasons. Knight assisted with play calling from the
press box. In addition, he collaborated with the defensive coordinator
to determine defensive strategies for each game.
A two-year letter winner for the Bulldogs, Knight was named
Wingate's defensive MVP in 2005. He led the team in tackles (89) the
same season. In addition, Knight shared the South Atlantic
Conference statistical championship with three fumble recoveries.
Knight played two years at Northland Community and Technical
College in Thief River Falls, Minn. before joining the Bulldogs in the
fall of 2004. He was All-Conference and team defensive MVP two
years each. Knight was All-Region and All-State one year each.
Knight earned a B.S. degree in Parks and Recreation Administration
from Wingate University in December, 2006. Most recently, he spent
two years as the ISS Coordinator at Sun Valley High School. Knight is
a graduate of Richmond Senior High in Rockingham.
Wingate was second in the SAC in passing offense (241.1 yards per
game) during the 2009 season. The Bulldogs were third in the league
in total offense (395.3 yards per game). Four Wingate receivers
caught 25 passes or more last year: Ellington (47), Perry Floyd (32),
Chris Bowden (30) and Philip Thomas (25). Floyd was named to

Anthony Maqazu
Tight Ends Coach
Anthony Magazu is a new addition to
the Wingate football staff, as the Kent
State University graduate will serve
his first season in 2010. Magazu will
work with the Bulldog tight ends.
For the last seven seasons, Magazu
has served as the assistant
equipment manager for the Carolina
Panthers. During training camps, he
helped set up practices and games.
Magazu earned a B.A. degree in Communication Studies at Kent
State, graduating in December, 2009. He earned a full football
scholarship to play quarterback for KSU. A three-year letterwinner, he
received the Don Nottingham Cup as the most improved offensive
player at the conclusion of the 2006 spring practice cycle.
A very active campus servant, Magazu served on the KSU StudentAthlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) for four years. He was regular
volunteer at Akron General Hospital. Academically, Magazu earned a
Certificate of Achievement from the KSU School of Communication
Studies for his senior portfolio.

Eric Mele enters his fourth campaign
with the Wingate University football
program. He serves as the special
teams coordinator and running backs
coach. On campus, Mele is one of
Wingate's Success Coaches,
operating out of the Student Life
department.
Mele coached first team All- South
Atlantic Conference running back Vince Jordan, helping the West
Montgomery High graduate compile 967 yards rushing yards and 12
touchdowns during the 2009 season. Jordan averaged 6.2 yards per
carry. Wingate's running backs scored 20 rushing touchdowns last
year.
Mele helped the 2009 Bulldog special teams unit put up big numbers.
Wingate was first in the SAC in kick returns, kick-off coverage and
punt returns. On the NCAA charts, the Bulldogs were sixth in kick
returns (24.44 yards per return) and 10th in punt returns (14.67 yards
per return).
In 2008, Wingate tailback Nelson Woods led the league with 1238
rushing yards on his way to first team All-SAC honors. As a group, the
Wingate rushing attack accumulated 1917 rushing yards and 19
touchdowns.
Both the 2008 kick-off and kick return units finished first in the SAC
with the kick return unit finishing fourth in NCAA Division II with 24.26
yards per return. The Bulldogs led the SAC in the same category.
Prior to his time at Wingate, Mele spent the 2006 season as the wide
receivers coach at Saint Peter's (N.J.) College. While at Saint Peter's,
Mele coached the number three-ranked receiver in NCAA Division IAA (7.4 receptions per game) and helped coordinate the eleventhranked passing offense. He tutored two All-MAAC selections.
In 2005, Mele was the co-defensive coordinator and special teams
coordinator at Marist High School in Bayonne, N.J. The defense
yielded 13 points per game on its way to the school's first playoff
appearance in twelve seasons.
Mele began his coaching career at William Paterson (N.J.) University
in 2003. His tenure at WPU started as the outside linebackers coach;
he later became WPU's special teams coordinator and defensive
backs coach. Mele mentored the number thirteenth-ranked kick
returner in NCAA Division III during the 2004 season. He coached
three All-NJAC choices in two years.
A graduate of William Paterson, Mele was a three-year starter at
strong safety and outside linebacker for the Pioneers. He earned his
bachelor's degree in Sociology and Criminal Justice from WPU in
2002. Mele completed a Masters degree in Sports Management from
the American Military University in 2007.
As a high school student-athlete, Mele won a Prep B state football
championship at Wardlaw-Hartridge Prep (Edison, N.J.). He was a
first team All-Conference and All-County selection. Mele resides in
Monroe with his wife Melissa and daughters Samantha, Jordan and
Taylor.
In February, return specialist Perry Floyd was named to the 2009
NCAA Division II All-American second team by Don Hansen's Football
Gazette. Earlier, Floyd was named to the All-Super Region 2 first
team by the same publication.
A first team All-SAC performer as a return specialist, Floyd averaged
30.4 yards per kick return and 15.1 yards per punt return in 2009. He
led the league in both categories. The Forestview High School
product was third on the NCAA Division II charts in kick returns and
ninth in punt returns. He finished the year with 1,105 all-purpose
yards.

Mike Pope enters his second season

and director of high school relations
in 2010. In May, author Wilt
Browning released Pope's biography, entitled Do They Play Football in
Heaven?
WINGATE FOOTBALL
Before coming to Wingate, Pope has coached football at nine different
schools. He was an assistant in the North-South All-Star Football
Game in 1991 and the Shrine Bowl in 1996. Pope has been named
the Region Coach of the Year on numerous occasions. In 1988, he
garnered the South Carolina Football Coach of the Year Award. He
has been camp director of the Hawg Tuff O-Line Camps for 20+
years. Pope has had over 17,000 young men and women attend
these camps.
Prior to joining the Bulldog coaching staff, Barrett was employed by
Velocity Sports in Parsippany, N.J. His strength training expertise is
reaping benefits for the Wingate football program. Before his time as
a Bulldog student-athlete, Barrett was an All-West Jersey standout at
Pope John XXIII in Sparta, N.J. His football coach was the legendary
Victor Paternasto. A team captain at Pope John XXIII, Barrett was
selected to participate in the East-West bowl game.
Jeff Simpson
Defensive Backs Coach
In February of 2008, Coach Pope received an award from the South
Carolina Coaches Association for Distinguished Service to South
Carolina High School Football. This honor has been given to only
eight other coaches in the last 30 years in South Carolina.
Coach Pope graduated from Wingate University in 1972 with an A.A.
in Secondary Education. While at Wingate, he was a member of the
soccer and wrestling reams. Coach Pope graduated from GardnerWebb University in 1974 with a B.S. Degree in Physical Education.
While at GWU, he played offensive guard. After graduating from
Gardner-Webb in 1974, Pope played semi-pro football with the
Stanley Patriots for two years while coaching at Piedmont High. He
played offensive guard and tackle for the Patriots; the team was 24-3
during this time.
The Monroe, N.C. native graduated from nearby Piedmont High
School. While at Piedmont, Pope was All-Union County and All-Rocky
River Conference in football. After 35 years in the classroom, he has
retired from teaching. Pope resides in Monroe with his wife Ginger
and their three daughters, Taylor, Elizabeth and Sarah.
Shawn Barrett
Strength and Conditioning
Coach
Shawn Barrett enters his second
season on the Bulldog coaching staff
as the Strength and Conditioning
Coordinator in 2010. The Wingate
University graduate (class of 2009)
finished his football career as the
fifth-leading receiver in school history.
As a junior, the Andover, N.J. native
was second on the team in receiving yards (538) and caught five
touchdown passes for the 'Dogs. For his efforts, he was named
second team All-South Atlantic Conference.
Barrett left everything on the field his senior year. He compiled 54
catches for 626 yards and eight touchdowns. Barrett notched three
touchdown receptions versus Tusculum College, earning SAC
offensive player of the week accolades. Against Carson-Newman,
Barrett recorded a team-high nine receptions for 117 yards. He once
again earned second team All-SAC honors.
Jeff Simpson brings a wealth of
coaching experience to his new
adventure as assistant coach for the
Wingate University football team. A
UNC Chapel Hill graduate, Simpson
will work with the Bulldog defensive
backs.
Last year, Simpson was the head
football coach at West Charlotte High
School. The Lions finished third in
the always tough I-Meck (4A) Conference. Previously, Simpson spent
four years as the head football coach at Vance High School in
Charlotte. He was the MECA 4A Coach of the Year in 2005.
The Vance Cougars won the MECA (4A) conference championship in
2005, earning a number four seed in the NCHSAA state play-offs.
During Simpson’s tenure, Vance was 27-21 overall and 19-5 in the
MECA standings.
Simpson was an assistant coach at Southern Durham High School
(two years), Richmond County Senior High School (one year), Laney
High School (five years, two stints) and West Columbus High School
(one year). During these nine seasons, Simpson’s teams compiled a
93-23 overall record.
Southern Durham was ranked number one in the state during his stint
as assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and wide receiver
coach. Richmond Senior was 12-1 overall during his one-year term as
defensive line coach. The Raiders were ranked number two in the
state by the AP, I-High and NCPreps. The state runners-up in 2001,
Laney won two conference titles during his career in Wilmington.
Simpson served as an assistant softball coach for one season each at
Laney and Richmond Senior. At Laney, Simpson helped the
Buccaneers win the state 4A softball championship in 1998. The
Richmond Senior Raiders won the Mid-Southeastern Conference 4A
title in 2003.
While at UNC Chapel Hill, Simpson earned a B.A. degree in Physical
Education, Exercise and Sports Science. He earned a teacher
certification for physical education (K-12) from UNC Wilmington.

Johnson Richardson
Offensive Line Coach

Patrick Campbell
Johnson Richardson joins the Bulldog
family as an assistant offensive line
coach on Joe Reich’s staff.
Richardson earned four letters as a
tight end for Wofford College. He
graduated in spring 2010 with a B.A.
degree in Business Economics.
Richardson helped lead the Terriers
to the Southern Conference
championship in 2007. Wofford
reached the NCAA FCS championship quarterfinals in 2007 and
advanced to the FCS championship play-offs in 2008. Richardson
started all 11 games his senior season, serving as team captain for
the South Florida game.
Prior to his time at Wingate, Richardson was an equipment and
sideline assistant for the Carolina Panthers. During his three years
with the NFL team, he managed inventory, repaired equipment and
served as a field assistant.
During the summer of 2009, Richardson was a camp counselor for
Kickin’ Kids (Spartanburg, S.C.), supervising 80 youngsters between
the ages of six and 15. He taught basic football strategy, while
working on overall skill development. He also served a winter 2007
internship with the Ward Law Firm (Spartanburg, S.C.), helping
organize 500 cases and providing assistance as a case runner.
Gemetrius McNeil
Wide Receivers Coach
Gemetrius McNeil enters his first
season as an assistant coach on the
Wingate University football staff.
McNeil will work with the Bulldog wide
receivers. He brings extensive high
school assistant coaching experience
to his new position.
McNeil spent five seasons as an
assistant coach at Sun Valley High
School. While at Sun Valley, McNeil worked with Spartan head coach
Scott Stein. McNeil also spent one season as an assistant basketball
coach at Sun Valley.
Placekickers Coach
Patrick Campbell is a new addition to
the Bulldog coaching staff in 2010.
He will be working directly with the
kickers and punters.
Campbell played his college football
at William Paterson (N.J.) University,
earning varsity letters as both a
kicker and a tight end. He graduated
from the Chubb Institute in 2000 with
a degree in technical support.
Campbell earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration from
Colorado Technical University in 2007.
As a high school student-athlete, Campbell won a Prep B state
football championship at Wardlaw-Hartridge Prep (Edison, N.J.). He
was a first team All-Conference and All-County selection. He resides
in Monroe with his wife Nedy and two sons, Bruce and Brody.

Billy Hall will help assistant coaches
Bobby James and Jeff Simpson with
the defensive backs as a student
assistant coach this year. Hall was a
two-sport athlete (football, rugby) at
Charlotte Catholic High School. As a
senior football player, Hall won the
Doc Koczak Award. The CCHS
Cougars won the conference and
regional football titles his final season. Hall led the team in solo tackles his junior and senior seasons for
legendary head coach Jim Oddo. In rugby, Catholic earned state and
region championships and placed eighth in the national tournament.
He is the son of Bryan and Kay Hall.
Prior to his time at Sun Valley High, McNeil spent one season each at
Porter Ridge High School and Sun Valley Middle School. He worked
five years as an assistant coach at Monroe Middle School. McNeil
won Coach of the Year honors at football camp while working with the
MMS Redhawks.
McNeil is a graduate of Florida A&M University in Tallahassee. He
earned a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering Technology. Most
recently, McNeil has spent six years as the Operations Manager at

Wingate, N.C.----Sophomore running back
Vince Jordan posted career-highs of 215
yards, 19 carries and three touchdowns as the
Bulldogs rallied for a 38-17 victory over the
University of West Georgia.
Wingate compiled 430 yards total offense on
the afternoon, averaging 6.3 yards per play.
Thanks to the efforts of Jordan and his teammates, the Bulldogs rushed 43 times for 295
yards and three scores. The opportunistic hosts
also forced five turnovers, intercepting four
passes and recovering one fumble. Wingate
converted three-of-four red zone chances.
On defense, Wingate senior safety Tylan
Merkerson had 10 tackles and one QB sack.
Robert Fletcher had a big day in his first game
in the Bulldog blue-and-gold; he added six tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery
to his 98-yard interception return for pay dirt.

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate won the turnover battle and converted two miscues into touchdowns
as the Bulldogs topped North Greenville 33-14.
Wingate had four takeaways, while posting zero
giveaways.
Braves compiled 196 rushing yards, compared
to 57 yards on the ground for the Bulldogs.
Fletcher scored Wingate's fourth defensive
touchdown of the season in the third quarter.
The Lancaster High School product returned a
UNC Pembroke fumble 25 yards for a TD.
W ingate 42, Tusculum 31
Greeneville, Tenn. ----Redshirt junior running
back Nelson Woods rushed 17 times for 133
yards and three touchdowns as the Bulldogs
defeated Tusculum College 42-31 in a
nationally-televised Thursday night contest to
open South Atlantic Conference play.
Wingate never trailed in the back-and-forth
contest. The Bulldogs posted 450 yards total
offense, while the Pioneers blazed a trail for
352 yards total offense. Jordan almost joined
Woods in the 100-yard club, as he rushed 18
times for 99 yards and one score.
The Wingate defense recorded four sacks.
Bulldog redshirt junior linebacker Greg Harmon
had 11 tackles (five solo) and 2 1/2 tackles for
loss. He also shared a sack. Merkerson had
two huge interceptions in the Tusculum end
zone. He added six tackles and one pass
break-up.

Jordan started the scoring, scoring on a 22-yard
touchdown run to give the hosts the lead for
keeps. RP Lopez added the extra point to give
the Bulldogs a 14-7 edge with 5:12 remaining in
the second frame.
Wingate, N.C.----Haffly threw a career-high
three touchdown passes as the Bulldogs topped
Brevard College 28-12 in South Atlantic
Conference football action.
Wingate made the plays when they counted,
converting nine-of-18 third down conversions.
On the flip side, North Greenville was two-for14 on third-down plays. The Bulldogs compiled
297 yards total offense, compared to 245 yards
for the visiting Crusaders.
Wingate outdistanced Brevard in total offensive
yards 364-268. The Bulldogs averaged 6.3
yards per play (58 plays), while holding the
Tornados to 3.8 yards per play (71 plays).
Brevard won the time of possession battle
32:56-27:04.
In his second collegiate start, Haffly completed
19-of-33 passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns. Wingate redshirt senior quarterback
James Hall connected on three-of-four passes
for 35 yards. The two signal-callers utilized
seven different receivers. Bulldog redshirt junior
wide receiver Philip Thomas topped the charts,
catching six passes for 52 yards. Floyd and
Ellington caught five passes each.
Fletcher topped the Wingate defensive charts
with 15 stops (six solo, nine assists). Bulldog
linebackers and high school teammates Ben
Hinson and Aaron Plyler split 24 stops down
the middle, with Hinson posting a QB sack.

Hickory, N.C.----Woods scored from one-yard
out to cap off a thrilling, 17-point fourth quarter
comeback as the Bulldogs escaped Hickory
with a 50-49 victory over the Lenoir-Rhyne
University Bears at Moretz Stadium.
Pembroke, N.C.----UNC Pembroke scored 21
unanswered points in the fourth quarter to take
a 24-13 NCAA Division II victory over Wingate
University at Grace P. Johnson Stadium and
Lumbee Guaranty Bank Field.

The 'Dogs used a career day from redshirt junior wide receiver Perry Floyd, who piled up 287
all-purpose yards with two receiving
touchdowns to compliment an 89-yard kickoff
return for a touchdown. Haffly also had career
numbers throughout his stat line with 29
completions, 311 yards and three touchdowns.
Down 21 points and faced with a fourth-andseven from the L-R eight with 1:17 left in the
third, Lopez drilled a 26-yard field goal, igniting
a stretch where the Bulldogs would outscore
the Bears 29-7 over the final 16:17 of the game.
Haffly's day ended by engineering an 18-play,
91-yard drive in 3:15 to complete the
comeback. The drive included a fourth-and-one
conversion and a 26-yard reception by Thomas
on third-and- 15 to set up the Woods gamewinner with 43 seconds remaining. LenoirRhyne had a chance to win the game, but a 61yard field goal attempt fell short and sealed the
comeback for the visiting Bulldogs.

Wingate, N.C.----The Newberry College football
team posted 448 yards total offense en route to
a 35-27 South Atlantic Conference victory over
Wingate University at Irwin Belk Stadium and
John R. Martin Field.
Newberry senior quarterback Brandon Gantt
threw for a career-high 336 passing yards.
Gantt completed 20-of-39 passes for 336 yards
and one score. Sophomore receiver Brandon
Bostick caught nine passes for 158 yards.
Senior wide receiver David Smith recorded
seven catches for 142 yards and one TD.
Haffly helped the Bulldogs compile 312 yards of
total offense. He completed 15-of-38 passes for
232 yards and three touchdowns. The
Newberry defense made Haffly earn every yard,
as the scarlet-and-gray defenders had 10 quarterback hurries, three QB sacks and two interceptions.
W ingate 42, Catawba 17
Salisbury, N.C.----Jordan posted 160 yards
rushing to help the Bulldogs record 518 yards
total offense in a 42-17 South Atlantic
Conference victory over host Catawba College
at Shuford Stadium.
Wingate did not commit a turnover on the
afternoon and converted on half of its 16 thirddown attempts. The Bulldogs won the field
position battle, thanks to the efforts of wide
receiver/return specialist/place kicker Bobby
Seidof. In his first-ever collegiate kicking
appearance, Seidof handled six of Wingate's
seven kick-offs Saturday. He boomed the six
kicks for an average of 63.3 yards, giving the
visiting Bulldogs a plus-six-yard advantage in
the most-important field position battle (Wingate
33 to Catawba 27).

Wingate, N.C.----Carson-Newman College
senior running back Buck Wakefield rushed for
a school-record 303 yards and two touchdowns
to lead the 18th-ranked Eagle football team to a
45-7 victory over Wingate in South Atlantic
Conference action.
Haffly and Hall combined for 330 passing yards,
but the Bulldogs lost the turnover battle 3-1.
Wingate entered the contest as the number two
team on the NCAA Division II turnover margin
charts with a plus-14 rating.
Wingate got on the scoreboard later in the
second quarter, as the Bulldogs marched 80
yards on six plays to find pay dirt. Haffly
finished the drive with a 42-yard scoring strike
to Thomas. Lopez added the PAT to make the
score 17-7 with 4:23 remaining in the second
quarter.
MHC tallied 452 total yards. Wingate recorded
293 in the air and 227 on the ground. MHC
threw for 263 yards and rushed for 189. While
Wingate took good care of the ball, Mars Hill
fumbled the ball five times and lost possession
on four of those miscues.
Haffly completed 18-of-30 passes to account for
Wingate's passing yardage. He had a careerhigh five touchdown passes in the victory. He
also rushed for one TD. Ellington was Haffly's
favorite target, catching five passes for 114
yards and one score. Vince Jordan ran for 123
yards and two scores, averaging 6.2 yards per
carry. Luis Alvarez and Fletcher led the
Bulldog defense with nine tackles each. Alvarez
forced a fumble, while Fletcher recovered a
Lion fumble.

Mars Hill, N.C.----Wingate University defeated
Mars Hill College 56-35 in South Atlantic
Conference football action Saturday at the
Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares
Stadium. The Lions dropped to 6-4 overall and
4-3 in the SAC with the loss. Wingate improved
to 7-3 on the year and 5-2 in the league.
The teams combined for 972 yards of total

Caldwell enters her 12th year at Wingate and her eighth year as head athletic trainer in the fall of 2010. Her primary sport responsibilities are

Appalachian State in Sports Medicine and Health Promotion in 1997. In

Leigh Ann Caldwell
Tim Singleton – Assistant Athletic Trainer – Tim Singleton enters his
second year on the staff as the assistant athletic trainer. He is the head
trainer for the Wingate football team, beginning his responsibilities in the
fall of 2009. Singleton graduated from Wingate University in May 2004
with a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training. He received his
Masters of Science degree in Sports Medicine from Georgia State
University in May 2006.

WINGATE ATHLETICS
Steve Poston
Vice President and Director of Athletics
Steve Poston has served as vice-president and
director of athletics since 2001. Poston was
honored in the spring of 2007 for 35 years of
service to Wingate University. Steve Poston
began his career at Wingate University in 1972
as head baseball coach and professor of
physical education.
The Bulldogs won the SAC Echols Athletic
Excellence Award for the third year in a row in
2008-09. Wingate is ranked number three
among NCAA Division II Academic All-America® producing schools in the
2000's with 34 honorees during this millennium.
Over the years, Poston has held numerous administrative positions at the
school. Prior to his promotion to the position of vice-president and director of
athletics, he was vice-president for student affairs at the school. Also, Poston
served three-plus years as vice-president for administration and director of the
Matthews Center. He was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the
Matthews Center, including studies for additional degree completion programs.
Poston spent 10 years as director of admissions (four years) and vice-president of enrollment management (six years). Thanks to his efforts, thousands of
worthy students were able to continue their education at Wingate University.
A very active participant in Union County civic and community affairs, Poston
has held many leadership positions over the years. He has been vice-president
and chairman of the Union County Community Arts Council. Poston has served
in the Monroe Rotary Club, Union County Habitat for Humanity, Union County
Job Ready Partnership and the Blooming Arts Festival. He is a member of the
Lake Park Christian Academy board of trustees and the Union County United
Way board.
A graduate of Gardner-Webb and Wake Forest, Poston holds an M.A. degree
in higher education administration from Appalachian State University. Poston
and his wife Beverly live in Weddington.
Gary
Hamill
Gary Hamill is Wingate University's associate
athletic director and director of soccer. Also, he is
the head coach for the Bulldog men's soccer team.
In 17 years as the Wingate men's soccer coach,
Hamill has compiled and overall record of 217-11318. A very active member of NSCAA and NCAA
committees, Hamill has received more COTY
honors than any other men's soccer coach in SAC
history. As an administrator, Hamill oversees the
day-to-day operations of several sports. He has a
myriad of other administrative duties, including the
scheduling and maintaining of outdoor facilities.
Hamill is working on his MAEd. degree in Sports
Administration at Wingate.

Caddigan
Bill
Nash
Bill Nash is the Director of the Athletic Foundation,
Bulldog Club director and assistant athletic director
at Wingate University. This new position has the
responsibility for providing strategic leadership to
the fundraising and promotional activities of the
Athletic Foundation. Prior to accepting this new
position, Nash served 14 seasons as head baseball
coach for the Bulldogs. He was also Wingate's
Dean of Student for nine years. During his coaching
tenure, Nash posted a career record of 403-338-2.
The Bulldogs won four SAC tournament titles (the
most of any SAC school) during Nash's career. A
graduate of Wingate and Wake Forest, Nash
earned an MHDL from UNCC.

Michelle Caddigan is assistant athletic director,
senior woman administrator (SWA) and head
softball coach at Wingate University. As head
softball coach, Caddigan has compiled a 472-228-3
overall record in 13 Bulldog seasons. The Bulldogs
have never finished lower than third in the SAC
standings during her career. As the SWA, she is the
highest ranking female involved with the
management of the athletics program. Caddigan
oversees work study for the department and serves
as a member of the Sports Hall of Fame committee
and the campus student success team. Caddigan
earned her Masters of Science degree from James
Madison in Kinesiology with a concentration in
Athletic Administration.
Elizabeth Biggerstaff was promoted to assistant
athletic director for compliance and business
operations during the summer of 2009. Biggerstaff
monitors and enforces compliance with NCAA
Division II rules and regulations. She works closely
with the Faculty Athletics Representative to
determine eligibility of freshman, transfer and
continuing student-athletes. A former WU studentathlete (soccer and basketball), she spent one year
as an assistant women's basketball coach at
Wingate. She earned a B.S. degree in Psychology
(graduating with honors) and an MBA from
Wingate. While a grad student, Biggerstaff served
three years as an assistant to VP and Director of

Wingate wins fourth consecutive SAC Athletic Excellence Award
The Wingate University Bulldogs used another strong Spring to become the first school in league history
to win the SAC Athletic Excellence Award four consecutive years.Wingate shares the 2010 title with
Carson-Newman, marking the first time in league history that two teams tied for the honor.
Both Carson-Newman and Wingate finished the year with 94.5 points. Carson-Newman had a 5 ½-point
lead after the winter championships, but Wingate picked up 43 points in the spring’s six championship
sports, while Carson-Newman had the third-best point total in the spring with 37.5 points.
The Bulldogs, in second place after the fall and winter sports seasons, won the conference championship
in baseball, finished second in men’s tennis, and had third-place finishes in women’s tennis and men’s and
women’s golf in the spring.Wingate also won the conference title in volleyball and was second in
football.
Carson-Newman won conference championships in football, men’s and women’s soccer, and had secondplace finishes in volleyball, women’s cross country, softball and women’s golf.
Lincoln Memorial University, in seventh place in the overall standings heading into the spring, jumped to
third place by picking up 39 points to finish with 73.5 points overall. It is the best finish for the
Railsplitters since joining the league in 2006. LMU had championships in men’s golf and men’s and
women’s tennis.
Tusculum College, which had finished second in the Echols Athletic Excellence race the past two years,
stands in fourth place with 70 total points.Tusculum shared the women’s tennis title with LMU, and had
second-place finishes in
women’s soccer and men’s
basketball.
Lenoir-Rhyne University is
in fifth place with 66.5
points.The Bears won
championships in women’s
cross country, women’s
basketball and softball, with
a second-place finish in
men’s cross country.
Catawba College finishes in
sixth place with 65.5 points.
The Catawba Indians won
the men’s basketball
championship and tied for
second in baseball.

Newberry College is seventh with 64 points. Newberry won the women’s golf championship and finished
second in men’s golf and women’s basketball.
Mars Hill College is eighth with 57 points.The Lions won the men’s cross country championship for the
13th consecutive year and tied for second in baseball.
Brevard College finished with 42.5 points.The Tornados tied for second in men’s basketball for their best
finish.
The South Atlantic Conference Echols Athletic Excellence Award is presented annually to the member
athletic department that earns the highest overall finish based on final regular season standings. Points
are based on final tournament standings in the sports of men’s cross country, women’s cross country,
men’s golf and women’s golf. The trophy is presented at the SAC Annual Business Meeting at the
conclusion of each year.The trophy is named in honor of former SAC Commissioner Doug Echols.

The Bulldog Helping Hands program allows friends, family members and businesses to provide financial support for their student-athletes who attend
Wingate University. Funds from the Bulldog Helping Hands program are used to directly benefit the team of the donor’s choice. Each team identifies a
service project during the year as a part of the school’s strong emphasis on community service. The Bulldog Helping Hands program assists Wingate
student-athletes while they are making a difference on the field, in the classroom and in the community.

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS
The purpose of the Wingate University Athletic Endowment
Scholarship Program is to provide scholarship assistance to
academically qualified student-athletes who show evidence of
financial need. All financial awards, including athletic
scholarships, are coordinated through the Office of Student
Financial Planning.
The R. Douglas Branch Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Branch Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1988
by friends, business associates, and family of R. Douglas Branch.
Douglas Branch was a 1961 graduate of Wingate College. His
love for Wingate, developed as a student and nurtured through
many years as a caring alumnus, led him to support his school in
many ways. He had a strong interest in Wingate athletics, especially the women's basketball team.
The Ron W. Christopher Baseball Endowed Scholarship
The Christopher Baseball Endowed Scholarship was
established by friends, former baseball players and family of
Coach Ronald W. Christopher. Awarded to a baseball player, the
scholarship recognizes Coach Christopher's unparalleled contributions to Wingate University.
Wingate's all-time leader in coaching wins, Christopher is a
member of the NAIA Hall of Fame and the Wingate University
Sports Hall of Fame. His players and teams won numerous awards
and championships.
The Bill Connell Memorial Golf Scholarship
The Connell Memorial Golf Scholarship was established at
Wingate College in 1993 by friends, faculty and staff, students and
family of William Franklin "Bill" Connell, class of 1953.
Bill Connell was a student, teacher, coach, counselor and valued
employee in his 34-year association with Wingate University. As a
student, Bill developed a lifelong appreciation for Wingate, blossoming into his life's work. Generations of students learned to
play golf from coach Connell. In the late 1970's and early 1980's,
his golf teams won 49 consecutive title matches.
Connell began the Wingate Sports Hall of Fame and was inducted
in 1988. His love for Wingate was reflected in his organizational
skills, desire to attain excellence and dedication to students and to
the school.
The Herschel "Red" and Mary B. Edwards
Endowed Scholarship
The Edwards Endowed Scholarship was established at Wingate
University in 1988 by Mr. and Mrs. Herschel Edwards. Herschel
"Red" Edwards graduated from Wingate College in 1939. His love
and concern for young people was demonstrated by his providing
this scholarship. "Red" was inducted into the Wingate Sports Hall
of Fame in 1988.
Joseph Preston and Ruby Hunsucker Corey
Scholarship Fund
The Joseph Preston and Ruby Hunsucker Corey Scholarship Fund
was established on August 10, 1977. The scholarship benefits
cheerleading student-athletes who are enrolled as full-time students at Wingate University. The Joseph Preston and Ruby
Hunsucker Corey Scholarship Fund honors one of the first cheerleaders at Wingate, Mr. Joseph Preston Corey.

The Ann Hancock Athletic Endowed Scholarship
The Ann Hancock Athletic Endowed Scholarship was established
in 1997 by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Hancock, Jr., parents of Ann
Hancock ('92). This scholarship honors Ann Hancock, a studentathlete at Wingate from 1988-1992.
While at Wingate, Ann Hancock received numerous awards for
her excellence in academics, athletics and leadership. Her achievements made a positive impact on her fellow students, the
University and the larger community.
The head women's basketball coach at UNC Wilmington, Hancock
was inducted into the Wingate University Sports Hall of Fame in
1998. She was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA)
Coach of the Year in 2003.
The Gene Huntley Memorial Golf Endowed Scholarship
The Huntley Memorial Golf Endowed Scholarship was established
in 1988 at Wingate University by family and friends of Gene
Huntley. This scholarship fund honors the memory of Gene
Huntley who attended Wingate College in 1984-88. Gene was a
young man whose love for his family, friends and life was demonstrated in many ways. He enjoyed golf and became a very good
player in high school and college.
The Danny Miller Athletic Endowed Scholarship
The Miller Athletic Endowed Scholarship was established in 1996
by former players, friends, and associated of Danny Miller. The
men's basketball at Wingate University from 1946-52, Coach
Miller made a positive impact on his players, the university and
the larger community. He was inducted into the Wingate Sports
Hall of Fame in 1987.
The Winston Parks, Jr. Memorial Basketball
Endowed Scholarship
The Winston Parks, Jr. Memorial Basketball Endowed Scholarship
was established in 2002 by family and friends of Winston Parks,
class of 1993. Winston Parks, Jr. was a young man who enjoyed
playing basketball. He won many honors during an illustrious academic and athletic career at Wingate.
Parks was the first senior college student-athlete to have an NBA
tryout. Winston was inducted into the Wingate University Sports
Hall of Fame (posthumously) in 2002.
Jim “Smoky” and Janna Gordon
Athletic Scholarship Fund
The Gordon Athletic Scholarship Fund was established August 7,
2008. The scholarship benefits football student-athletes who are
enrolled as full-time students at Wingate University. The Gordon
Athletic Scholarship Fund honors Jim Gordon and his loving wife
Janna. A former football student-athlete for the Bulldogs, Jim
“Smoky” Gordon is a member of the Wingate University Sports
Hall of Fame.

SIZE: 2,373 students, 400-acre campus including apartment-style residence halls, rolling lawns, a campus lake,
first-class athletic facilities and Fine Arts Center.

HISTORY: Wingate University was founded by Baptists in 1896 as an independent institution and is accredited
by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Wingate University is coeducational. Its students come from
25 states across America and 11 foreign countries. They represent a diverse range of races, faiths and ethnic
heritages. Sixty-five percent of students are from North Carolina.
ACADEMICS: Wingate University is a private comperhensive university offering 40 majors on the
undergraduate level including pre-professional programs. It offers graduate programs in business, education, sport
administration and physician assistanat studies, as well as doctorate degrees in pharmacy and educational
leadership. Ninety percent of faculty hold doctorates in their teaching specialty. All classes and labs are taught by
faculty. Low student-to-teacher ratio.
ATHLETICS: NCAA Division II intercollegiate men’s baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse,
soccer, swimming and diving, tennis and track and field. Intercollegiate women’s basketball, cross country, golf,
soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field and volleyball. Co-ed cheerleading is also a varsity sport. Men’s
and women’s intramural programs.
TRAVEL/STUDY PROGRAMS: Ten-day study-abroad trips are available through the W'International Program
to every student. Students and professors have visited several hundred destinations on five continents throughout
the world. Wingate University students may also study abroad at various locations around the globe for an entire
semester or during summer break.
