one louder
It never really works out as it should. At
least not normally. This year, as ever, the
dream timetable was tweaked, pushed
back, forcing itself against the wire. But
for once, the dreams at the start of the
year when the 'ideal' was discussed actually came true.
We got an opening film that symbolises
what we believe Filmstock is, it is in
many ways an archetypal Filmstock
movie. Then there's our guest. We
wanted someone from This Is Spinal
Tap - the very reason we were going ‘to
eleven’ - to introduce our special
screening and we were ecstatic to get
who we got and how the stars aligned
for that one.
Then there is the reasoning behind
going to eleven. Some of you will have
heard it vowed or heard murmurings,
which are true. The deeper into the programme you go, the clearer it will all
become. It is goodbye, but only to Filmstock. We will return with something
new, at some point in the future. We
want to announce it, but this is not an
edition of the festival that will dwell, so
there are dedicated pages to ‘the end’
which will go someway to lay out our
reasoning.
R J Blow
& Company
What we have tried to do with our programme is leave a Filmstock legacy on
the screen and in these pages, so there’s
Roma & Asia, clan Doherty and clan Fox, Wurz, King Heno, Tardis, Jo, Willow, Nacho, Moritz, Strawberry,
Martin Thurlow, Droog, Andy G, Dave, Vikki, Jenni, Joel and Chris at The Hat Factory, Laura Church,
Emma Darcy, Christian Turton, Francesca & Tim at JIGSAW24, Tony I and Aaron, City Life Church, all anniversary cakemakers, Sam and Elaine, John and Sarah, Naomi Wynter-Vincent, Phil Paine, Mike and
Rose, the brothers Wade, The Old Shoppers, Lisa at Gardiff (for keeping us cool), Daisy at Cineworld, John
Travers (for old time’s sake), Brookes (tenth year), Annabel, Stuart and co at Bartham Press, Alan and the
folks at Union Hand Roasted, Rodger and Co at WMF (hey Presto!), Jason at Beers Of Europe, all at R J
Blow and Co, Esther & Martin at HCCS, Andy Sizmur @ Richer Sounds, Brian and The Mall, David
Parkinson, James Cunliffe, Geoff Cox, Photo Jane, The Guardian, Tebbsy, Barry & Diana Norman, Jody
and Andy at Universal Pictures, Liberty and Damo at The Works, Jane at Warner Bros, the legendary
Mompath conglomerate, Cinemanx and Premier PR, Dan W, Nic Roeg, Andy Vermouth, Ufonics (still
wants to come), Immel, John Lee (sorry), Tony Hendra, JNB publishing (neck ‘n’ neck), Nelda, Stephen
Malit, Ray Privett, Robin, Daniel & Matt at Dislocation, Dan Schneidkraut, Laura Woods (for the big X in
the sky), Procter - a real FS veteran, Jenny Erwood at Paramount, plus all volunteers and anyone else
that contributes after this goes to print.

a mix of the experienced, the artful and
the new. It’s full of the independent
spirit we have built Filmstock on and as
ever, gives a chance for filmmakers at
all stages of their careers to share in
the experience.
To say it’s a dream come true to close
this particular journey with a film by
the Coen Brothers, understates it somewhat. It felt fateful. We were speechless.
This is all or nothing. It's all out there.
it's on the screen, it's in this programme, it's in every inch of the space
we will create to welcome you into. So
many great films, so many great filmmakers, such a great audience. We are
blessed with those who invest their energy into Filmstock for the first time, or
time and again.
You reward us and re-energise us when
we need it most, but this year, alongside
you, we are gonna have fun, so much
fun. It's gonna be a blast, a party this
town will never forget. Join us.
Peace
In celebration of year 10, and going “one louder” to eleven,
Filmstock will unveil its festival ale The Spinal Tap.
Made with our friends at The Potton Brewery, it will be
available both on-tap and in commemorative bottles.
The Spinal Tap will be launched at our special screening of
the film on Saturday 7th Nov at 7.20pm.
THERE’S A NEW KID IN TOWN
Once again, a world of films matched only in number by a
world of the finest beers, ales and ciders from across the
globe. Some new tastes, some old friends.
When they arrive the pallet weighs about a ton, but the
special ones soon go, and when they’re gone they’re gone.
BEERS OF THE WORLD UNITE
Well it is our birthday! To celebrate friends of Filmstock will
be making cakes which will be for sale during the busy festival weekends.
Nothing is ever as simple as that, so to add to the atmosphere the cakes will also be judged by an official panel.
Do you want to make a cake? Do you want to be a judge?
Get in touch to get stuffed.

Cold Souls
Director & Writer: Sophie Barthes
101mins
Paul Giamatti, David Strathairn, Emily Watson
Paul Giamatti is, well, Paul Giamatti. Starring as a version of himself,
one of the best actors around gives a stunning performance as an anxiety ridden actor who opts to store his soul at a soul storage company
(run by David Strathairn, not playing himself), so he can fulfil his lead
role in Uncle Vanya.
What follows is a chain of events that flows from surreal to absurd, but
is also rooted in a real existential mire, and full of humour. Emily Watson is his wife, who becomes increasingly worried as he goes through
several changes and personalities in a film that asks big questions, but
never at the expense of its cinematic ambition.
Sophie Barthes’ debut feature is a true gem full of the independent vision and spirit that runs through the entire Filmstock programme and
has done for the past 10 years. Sometimes we watch a movie and say
instantly, in tandem at its close “That’s a Filmstock film”. Cold Souls is
such a film. A film of imagination, heart, black humour and great performances.
“An ambitious, elegantly shot, totally
cool first feature. Be warned: the film
encourages thinking!”
– Manohla Dargis, NY Times

There is such an emphasis on speed of image nowadays. It’s a bombardment. Nearly
every outlet for visual media has fast cuts and effects-ridden, complex sequences which
hide a dearth of character, emotion and heart.
This collection of films requires you to work, and listen, and watch, and see. They require
an audience, not a consumer. They want a dialogue with you that is independent and
deliberate, if not necessarily vocal. The rewards? Cinematic, enigmatic and emphatic
moments. The kind only the art of cinema can provide.

Going to eleven this year was no accident, or mistake. Since we screened This Is
Spinal Tap as part of our spoof marathon in year one we knew, yep, let’s do 11. The
‘Tap is a movie that never fails to delight. It cheers us up when times are hard, it
inspires us when we try and write comedy (in another guise) and as filmmaking
reminds us of what matters; character, timing, imagination.
Filmstock is delighted to welcome Tony Hendra
(Spinal Tap’s manager Ian Faith) to the festival to introduce the special screening.

The Flaming Lips have been a band we have always loved here at Filmstock HQ.
Their album ‘The Soft Bulletin’ soundtracked the early struggles and successes
of the festival and so when we were offered the chance to screen their epic but
lo-fi, self indulgent musical yuletide space odyssey, a film that has only screened
in the UK once before, we thought - why the hell not! We like the strange at
Filmstock, and the joyous and they don’t come stranger or more joyous than this.
FRIDAY 13TH NOV. 9.15PM. SCREEN A
THURSDAY 12TH NOV. 8.30PM. SCREEN A
SOUP OF THE DAY
Five afternoon screenings throughout the festival will form a
season we were going to call ‘Things we didn’t get round to’.
However, we thought ‘Soup Of The Day’ sounded snappier, so
in accordance with that, to find out what’s on, ask your
waiter for details.
We wanted to create something that did both the mammoth
job of summarising ten years whist remaining pleasing to
the eye and faithful to the spirit of Filmstock. We knew who
to ask. Chris Henley has designed and produced a limited
edition festival poster, screen-printed, and individually
numbered. They will be on sale during the festival and will
be unveiled at the Opening Film.
Wewill never forget it.We don’t think you will either. That’s not
arrogance, that’s just love, and trust and faith in your friends.
Filmstock is all this and more. It's different every day. It's
always had the power to overcome the traumas of delivering
it. Whenever the waves felt like they were going to capsize
us the love we receive from the crowd, and our filmmakers,
and the memories of what we have done for a decade, rise
like Gods to calm the sea, and restore the tranquil, idyllic
waters. Whatever we do next, it won’t compare to this, because this was the first thing of its kind for us.
10 years ago we wrote a hilarious, almost cringeworthy
business plan for Filmstock.A decade later we have achieved
everything on it, cinematically, except Martin Scorsese.
However, the ‘business’ side of the ‘business’ plan dissolved
soon after it was written. Fortunately, we just did what we
wanted, and the results, well, you know the results.
Temecula hot tubs, R&J - rose petals & candlelight, Darjeeling & Terror, Nic Roeg here - now!, wow.
Here, now, we want to make 5 particular thank yous, these
are highlighted not to pedestal one supporter above another,
but they represent people who made it truly possible, not
just for us, but for everyone else.
This pleased us, because our greatest pleasure has been the
friends we’ve made, locally but mainly in the international
film community. We say mainly not out of disrespect to our
local friends but because of the amazing relationships we
forged around the globe, which surprise us to this day. When
we started this, if you’d said we would meet the people we
did, spend time with them in their homes, and hometowns,
to the level that we continue to all over the world, we would
have laughed.
Finishing at the peak of Filmstock’s success was never an
easy decision, but we believe we have never coasted or
taken anything for granted. We have never done things the
easy way.
What this festival is, and the films it has shown has changed
a lot in content. Look at the filmstockography overleaf to
see that. You did that! You changed it by supporting the indies - by clamouring for the films that were made from the
heart, that you would never see elsewhere round here.
THE POSTER TO END ALL POSTERS
Filmstock 2000-2009: Ray Harryhausen, Shrek, partying
with The Commitments (twice), Jaws in the Pool, Moulin
Rouge outdoors, Mike Hodges, films on the ceiling, the Filmstock bike ride (Sam’s broken arm, thanks for not suing),
late nights, early mornings, lots of curries, funding trauma,
last minute panics, so much coffee, entries by the barrel load,
staying with filmmakers, seeing their cities, Batman Begins,
Jason Reitman, unseen Abbott & Costello prints, love found,
love lost, Scorsese’s office, Hungarian television, hunting
houses with Jim Sheridan, at home with The Normans,
There are more people to thank, some there every year, all
crucial for a variety or single event both now and then, but
naturally, we can't thank you all here. But we will give you
a big hug when you come to this; our last hurrah.
Kata, your part in Filmstock is two-fold, you not only coined
'the filmstock family' but you also recognised the heart of
the festival and invested in it so much by inviting Filmstock
on holiday to Hungary, making us welcome and making it
possible for the many friends, filmmakers, musicians and
artists that we took in our suitcase.
We are different people now. Sculpted by life, but in no
small part by this venture. Friends, memories, lessons,
achievements. In the map of our lives, Filmstock is due
north. It's time for us to do something new. It was a tough
decision because we love it and we have loved doing it, the
good has always beaten down the bad, always. We’re sure
there is another kind festival lurking in our guts, and we’re
excited and nervous about what that might be but also
thankful we don’t have to start thinking about it yet.
We've been living ‘Filmstock’ since we were 19 and 20. It's
been in the calendar for 10 years.
Don't be sad. Celebrate. Celebrate with us this tumultuous
journey with too many memories. This is the fourth draft,
and each time we never know where to start. Filmstock,
you see, is not just ours. Its special quality is that it exists in
the hearts and minds of filmmakers, audiences and staff but
it's not explicit.You can't soundbite it. It's a feeling, a sense.
We can say what our favourite bits are, but then again, they
change all the time. We could use a quote or photo or two
from our archive, but they wouldn't do it justice. It could
never nail the diversity of films, events, people and the‘thing’
that just happened.
{ FINAL DRAFT }
This year at the festival centre we will have a living,
breathing representation of the Filmstock office across
time - “inspired by true events”.
It will be scaled down a little, and some cinematic license
will be taken, but you’ll be able to touch, smell and watch
your way through the archive of plans, letters, insults, oh and films.
THE FAUX FILMSTOCK OFFICE
To JV who made year two possible and helped us take
Filmstock under the stars, six times.
Heno, always working under your design influence, you have
never failed to capture the feel of Filmstock over the last ten
years, always contributing, giving, and steering ideas and images - making us reaslise what’s possible on paper and online.
Wurzel, for coming in and taking the load off us (Justin
mainly) and allowing us time and energy to enjoy the days of
the festival. It has been good to have you on board these past
few years - minus the year we don’t speak of! (thanks Atso!)
- and we know you will be at the core of what we do next.
To Ray and all at RJ Blow & Company, thank you for putting
up with ten years/tonnes of mail, the result of our ‘lightly
made’ descison to go international and all that came with it.
To our families and loved ones. We have probably been a
nightmare at times and you probably feared for our sanity
and wellbeing, but thanks to you we always got there. It’s
only fair to remind ourselves and disclose to all that year
one was paid for (at the eleventh hour) by our parents and
dear friend Damian.

The story of Dr Feelgood,
four men in cheap suits who
crashed out of Canvey Island
in the early '70's, sandpapered the face of rock'n'roll,
leaving all that came before
a burnt-out ruin - four estuarine John-the-Baptists to
Johnny Rotten's anti-Christ.
Taking London by storm,
they sped through Europe
and conquered the UK with
No 1 chart success, before
imploding just as punk was
born and America beckoned
with open arms. Contributions from members of The
Clash, Blondie and The Sex
Pistols join Dr Feelgood
with collaborators Jools
Holland and Alison Moyet to
tell the story of Canvey, 70's
England and the greatest
local band in the world

Autopiloten tells the story of four people trying
to live up to their long lost ideals in four interwoven episodes. Georg must win the game
tonight. He discovers how the mechanisms of the
soccer trade have begun to turn against him.
Dieter is in pursuit of spectacular images daily
and nightly. He loves his son, who lives with his
ex-wife Rita. Jörg finds himself drifting off into
isolation and discovers he cannot go on with his
double life. Heinz spends his days singing at anniversary celebrations for shopping malls and the
like. They are all heroes of an inner insecurity,
who are just trying to hang in there.

On September 1st, 2001, Another Urban Riff had
been performing their play, MONO, on the Lower
East Side for one year. On September 15th, 2001,
the actors and director returned to the theatre to
vote on whether they should be the first play to go
back up after the attacks. Inspired by the days directly following 9/11, PRE literally refers to the
90 minutes before a play starts. The film re-creates
the small pocket of time directly following 9/11
when New Yorkers and most of the world acted as
if they were part of an ensemble.

A developmentally-arrested Uncle, a blind girl, her constant admirer who is a pickpocket, a man who works at a
printing office, Ji Ni from the butcher’s, the damaged Ru
Pi and the worn-out Man Ho. These characters give expression to their unique loneliness in five episodic tales.
They are not fleeting acquaintances, their lives are connected by overlapping bonds of fate. As their relationships
are disclosed, the movie switches gears freely from sweet
melodrama to hideous horror, from thriller to fantasy. In
the midst of such unpredictable change, the characters’
isolation, self-hatred, and internal universes unfold. “Sheltered Life echoes the work
of David Gordon Green while
establishing its own original
cinematic voice” - Atlantic Film Fest

their relationship with a video camera. At first
this offers her a feeling of connection to the outside world, but soon takes on a more sinister life
and interferes with their interactions. As Alice
and Dan simply try to ‘get along' we are reminded of our own failed loves, our own weaknesses, our own destructive patterns, all the
while feeling like the lucky voyeur.

A tale of small-town Canadian romance, the film
follows a pair of childhood friends reunited at their
high school reunion. Ten years after graduation
Todd remains a local could-have-been, while Allison illustrates children’s books and wonders what
might have been. Fueled by hope, longing, and nostalgia they embark on a romantic, if illusory, adventure to recapture lost love and happiness.
Asking if it’s possible to go home again, the film
explores the poignant moments between youth and
adulthood.

Some films stand out and
feel instantly different. They
demand we look at them a
different way. The films
screening in the gallery this
year demand attention for
their approach to cinema, to
visual art, to documentary
and confining them to the
short film programme seems
wrong. Throughout the festival,
enjoy some thought provoking
and stylish work from all
over the globe.

Je T’aime Luton
From an idea by a group of young local filmmakers, Je T’aime Luton has become an innovative open source production and training project. Films not about
Luton, but films where Luton is a character, a place a space and a background
for drama, romance and humour, sometimes small, sometimes epic.
It was born out of a desire to reflect a truer nature of our much derided and
misunderstood hometown, whilst lending itself to being an excellent project for
multi-generational filmmaking.
The shorts screening tonight were shot over a weekend, and form the pilot for
an ongoing, ever evolving portmanteau piece.
