ADMINISTRATION NEWS
New Administrative Structure Aims
to Strengthen, Enhance School Goals
and Opportunities
A new school year always brings about changes and new opportunities,
and this 2015-2016 school year is no different at Elyria Catholic.
Congressman Jim Jordan recently visited
Elyria Catholic with the purpose of hand
delivering a ticket to Mr. Krakowiak to
attend Pope Francis’ address
to Congress when he arrived in
Washington, D.C. in September. Students
had the opportunity to ask the
congressman questions during their
government class with teacher Mr. Allen
Clark. Mr. Krakowiak was Congressman
Jim Jordan’s guest in the House gallery for
the September 24th speech by Pope
Francis to a joint session of Congress. “It
is my honor to invite Mr. Krakowiak to
witness firsthand what will most certainly
be a very special day in the nation’s
capital,” remarked Jim. Congressman
Jordan chose Krakowiak with the ticket to
honor the formative role he played in the
lives of students throughout his 30 year
career span in Catholic education.
A new administrative structure has been
implemented to support the growing
academic and advancement needs of
the school. With Mrs. Amy Butler ’80 at
the helm of advancement as president/
principal, Mr. Michael Wisnor has
stepped into the role as associate
principal. As such, Wisnor will be
managing the day-to-day operations of
the school. In addition to ensuring the
continuance of a strong, Christ-centered
school, Wisnor also aims to boost
collegiality, enhance the curriculum,
strengthen communication, and commit
to the school’s continuous improvement.
L to R: Mr. Tom Taylor ’79, Mrs. Patti Lutke, and
Mr. Michael Wisnor
Working alongside Wisnor in the front office is experienced educator and EC alum, Mr.
Tom Taylor, ’79. Taylor brings with him 30 years of educational experience as EC’s new
assistant principal. Prior to this he worked as the Assistant Principal at Brunswick High
School for 19 years. Taylor also worked for Elyria City Schools as a special education
teacher for 11 years. In addition, he coached baseball for Elyria Catholic from 1986 to
1995. Taylor and his wife Tracy have three children who graduated from EC: Corey ’07,
Ryan ’09, and Emily ’11. Likewise, Taylor is the only person to have coached at all three
of Elyria’s past and present high schools: Elyria High, Elyria West, and Elyria Catholic.
Taylor will be focusing on student discipline, work in tandem with the guidance
department, oversee student co-curricular activities, and help coordinate the
scheduling process. Veteran math teacher Mrs. Patti Lutke has stepped in as the dean
of academics, and will also be teaching two math courses during the day as well. As
dean, she will assist the administrative team and guidance with course selection,
professional development, and curriculum development.
Andy Krakowiak Reflects on Pope’s Visit
I was blessed through my personal invitation as a lifelong Catholic educator to witness a special moment in
U.S. history as I attended Pope Francis’ address to the joint session of Congress in Washington, DC. Along
with all in attendance, I could sense very quickly the humility, compassion, and wisdom of a man known
around the world as “Pope Francis.”
What began as a step into history, however, quickly developed into a rich experience of spirituality through the
charisms that this man quickly exhibited and freely shared with all who encountered him.
I will forever be grateful for the honor and privilege of representing Elyria Catholic High School and Catholic
education as a whole through my personal journey to be part of Pope Francis’ visit to Washington, DC.
Mr. K and Alex Meihls ’09 meet on the front lawn of the White House. Alex now works for the House Oversight Committee.

PRESIDENT’S LETTER
A Message to
Alumni and Friends of Elyria Catholic High School
The Elyria Catholic community encompasses a diverse group of alumni, parents, students,
and friends. But in diversity is found common ground: a passion for Catholic education and
the desire to help move the mission of the school forward. Our success would not be
possible without the hard work and generosity of our families, donors, and the support of
the Diocese of Cleveland. Truly, this community is a team, working on a foundation of faith,
love, and mutual support. My hope is for this continued spirit of community building and
faith sharing to reach each and every past and present student, and that the Holy Spirit
guide all of us to continue to stay connected, celebrate our faith together, and work as a
team to build a bright future for Elyria Catholic.
One initiative we are focused on this year is to improve school governance through the
development of an Advisory Council. We have partnered with Business Volunteers Unlimited
(BVU), The Center for Nonprofit Excellence to facilitate
the process of identifying and engaging alumni and
friends to join the Advisory Council. With the guidance
of BVU, we have selected council members based on the skills, knowledge and resources
needed by our school to be more effective in meeting our 21st century educational needs.
I would like to offer gratitude to all those who were able to attend the President’s Circle
Reception held in October at the Lorain County Historical Center. It was a joy to spend
an evening with alumni, friends and parents who have demonstrated their dedication,
kindness and generosity to the Elyria Catholic community. As friends gathered for an
evening of music, conversation and good food, I took the opportunity to introduce
members of the Advisory Council in attendance. Leading the charge and direction of the
Advisory Council is Chairperson Dr. Nicholas Ksenich. In his remarks to the group, Dr.
Ksenich stated, “With the assistance and prayers of each of you, the Elyria Catholic
Advisory Council is committed to partnering with Mrs. Butler and all supporters of Elyria
Catholic to continue the efforts of prior administrators and benefactors to deliver Panther
Pride for generations to come.”
Gratitude, appreciation and thanks. Those are the values that fill my heart and
everyone’s heart who support Elyria Catholic and our students. Thank you to all those
who support the Elyria Catholic Fund. As we kick off our 2015-2016 drive, please
remember that each gift to Elyria Catholic, regardless of size, is a powerful testament to
the impact the school has on us all. We are proud to announce that we have secured a
$10,000 matching challenge grant from Steven Komives ’65. In Steve’s words, “I am
proud to be part of an institution founded in faith – Elyria Catholic is, first and foremost,
a Catholic high school. I’m so thankful ECHS existed for me. I challenge the Elyria
Catholic community to be as generous as possible.”

Thank you for the grace that inspires you to be generous in support of our school. In the
weeks leading up to Thanksgiving I am aware of giving thanks to God for the blessings
that I have. It is gratitude that lies at the heart of Christian stewardship. I am thankful for
your continued support of the mission of Elyria Catholic High School. It’s because of
you, our donors, that we are able to make Catholic education a priority in Lorain County.

Veteran English
Teachers Celebrate
Retirement
Mrs. Kathy Knox and Mrs. Nan Mahony celebrated their retirement in June
2015 after several years of working together in EC’s English department.
After 39 years of inspiring and motivating students
through literature, creative writing, and the finer
points of journalism, one of EC’s veteran teachers,
Mrs. Kathy Knox, is hanging up her hat.
After countless plays, papers, and rehearsals, English and
Theater teacher Mrs. Nan Mahony decided it was time to
close the curtain on her full-time teaching career and move
into a new phase of life: retirement.
Why not make it an even 40 years? “I like 39,” says Knox with a
laugh, “Haven’t you heard that women stop [aging] at 39?”
Mahony began her teaching career at Cloverleaf High School in Lodi,
Ohio where she taught Speech, English, and served as the assistant
play director. She continued teaching at Lorain Catholic High School,
where she taught Speech, Honors, College Option, AP English, and
Theatre for 12 years until the school closed in 2004. She completed
her teaching career at Elyria Catholic, where she served for 11 years
as an English teacher, theatre teacher, and served as the school play
and musical director. Of the many opportunities in the arts that she
brought to her students, the Great Lakes Theatre Festival Artist in
Residence program is one that Mahony speaks about with great pride
and enthusiasm.
Indeed, Knox has witnessed a kind of metamorphosis in
education over the years, but notes that the value of the
literature she has taught and what students have been able to
glean from that has, and will always, remain a constant.
Likewise, Knox remarks that her students remain a source of
inspiration to her. “I’m constantly amazed that after 39 years
they can still teach me something, and that they are able to see
something new in the literature that I’ve read and taught so many
times. It’s interesting to see classic literature through their eyes.”
They, she says, have always found a way of teaching her, too.
She also notes that her longtime friend and colleague, Mrs. Pat
Bradesca-Schock, also inspired her from the very beginning of
her career. “[She] was a tremendous person...
I was very serious and Pat Schock could bring fun to everything.
She helped me see the possibilities in teaching.” The two taught
together from 1978 to 2014.
A lover of literature and the arts from a young age, Knox credits
a favorite high school English teacher at the now-closed St.
Peter’s High School in Cleveland for planting the teaching seed.
Knox recalls that her teacher — a nun— saw great potential in
her creative abilities and insightful writing, and encouraged her
to continue her studies beyond high school. “She encouraged
my creative writing.
She loved literature and recognized an understanding [that I had
for the literature] and affirmed that in my assignments.” She notes,
too, that teaching appeals to her creative side and is “never
boring.” She has always enjoyed it and feels privileged and proud
to be a part of such a formative period in so many students’ lives.
Knox isn’t shying away from her creative side in retirement,
either. She’s already written six novels and even published an
Amazon Kindle edition of one: Blood Will Have Blood, “a
parody of Shakespeare’s Hamlet with vampires.” She is
working on her seventh novel now. Along with writing, Knox
says she is looking forward to traveling with her husband and
spending time with her grandchildren.
6 Elyria Catholic High School Magazine
“The Artist in Residence program began more than 20 years ago as the
brainchild of the Great Lakes Theatre Festival and its director Kenn
McGlaughlin. GLTF was known in those days as the Shakespeare
Festival. The idea was simple and pure genius — get professional actors
into high schools to “teach” Shakespeare to students in a way they
would enjoy and remember. Not only will students learn the beauty,
majesty, and timelessness of Shakespeare, but new audiences would
be nurtured and encouraged. Kenn approached my predecessor at
Lorain Catholic HS to work out a deal where all the professional actors
would spend a week “teaching” Shakespeare to all grade levels as a
“dress rehearsal” before going out as teams of two to paying schools.
When I came to Lorain Catholic two years later, I inherited the program
and a deep friendship with Kenn and his successors at Great Lakes.”
When Lorain Catholic closed and Mahony began teaching at Elyria
Catholic, she asked Principal Andy Krakowiak if he would be
interested in continuing this program. He jumped at the chance and
so did Great Lakes Theatre Festival. Each year they bring four to six
teams of actors to Elyria Catholic for a week to teach the classics:
Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, Macbeth, and Hamlet.
“I am so happy that the program will continue. Elyria Catholic
students deserve to be nurtured in the Arts in every way possible.”
Leaving behind this legacy of the arts at Elyria Catholic, Mahony is
now teaching online coursework for Marygrove College’s Master’s in
Education program, and enjoying her retirement while spending time
with her grandchildren, reading, writing, traveling, and going to the
theatre.

ADMISSIONS CORNER
Do you remember your first day at Elyria Catholic High
School as a freshman? The Class of 2019 entered the
auditorium on the 25th of August with cheers from the entire
student body, faculty and staff. The cheers didn’t stop there.
The school welcomed the freshman class with cheers as
they walked into the school’s opening mass as well—a
tradition that Elyria Catholic holds dear. It is our hope that
the freshmen will soon realize that the family they have
joined here at EC will continue to cheer for them as they
make their journey through high school.
As the Admissions Office begins the process of welcoming the
class of 2020, I am looking forward to meeting prospective
students and their families in the upcoming months. There are
several opportunities for families to visit EC, including our
Open House on Sunday, November 1, 2015 from 11:30 a.m.2:00 p.m. Families will receive a tour of the campus by our own
student ambassadors, who enjoy sharing their own personal
experiences with prospective students. This is also a chance to
meet faculty and staff, and visit classrooms.
The first Placement Exam will be given Saturday November 7,
2015 from 8:30 a.m.-noon. We recommend that families
attend the Parent Meeting at 11:00 a.m. that same day as we
will be sharing important information on the admissions
process. The second Placement Exam will take place January
15, 2016. You can register for either date by visiting the
Admissions tab on the homepage of our website.
In addition to Open House and the
Placement Exams, prospective families
are invited to attend our theatre
department’s production of “Our Town” on
November 5, 7, & 8, 2015. Our theatre
students will take the stage again for the
spring musical on March 16, 18, and 19,
2016. The annual All-County Mass will be
taking place on January 25, 2016. Every
Annie Cunningham,
year Elyria Catholic invites all junior high
Admissions Director
students from surrounding Lorain County
Catholic schools to attend this Eucharistic
celebration. I highly recommend attending this mass if you have
never attended it. It truly embodies the spirit and sense of
togetherness that is Elyria Catholic.
As you can see, there really is something for everyone at Elyria
Catholic. As I have told prospective students, the only way to
discover which school is best for them is to visit. If your son or
daughter is interested in a shadow day, please contact me by
phone at 440-365-1821 ext. 116 or by email at annie.cunningham@
elyriacatholic.com. By shadowing another student, your son or
daughter has the chance to interact with the faculty and student
body, and get an all-around feel for the school. I guarantee once
they are here, they will hear the cheers wherever they go.

Night of Celebration
Gala & Auction
Honoring Nick Abraham ’60, Jim
Herrick ’70, and Jack Matia ’75
On Saturday, April 25, 2015, attendees of
the Night of Celebration Gala & Auction
honored three alumni who demonstrated
an exceptional commitment to making
Elyria Catholic the outstanding community
that it is. The evening was an expression
of a Catholic community of faith, coming
together to celebrate the actions of those
who have — in a variety of ways — done
their part to promote the mission of
Catholic education at Elyria Catholic.
For more than 20 years, alumni Nick
Abraham (Abraham Ford), Jim Herrick
(Liberty Ford), and Jack Matia (Jack
Matia Honda) have donated a new car
for the annual student car raffle. This
year’s car raffle raised over $80,000 in
student scholarships for the 2015-2016
academic year.
All three men credit their Catholic
education and faith in God in forming
their character. They feel that God has
blessed them abundantly and so they
thank Him by giving back. “It is important
to pay it forward by being a mentor,
providing service to others and giving of
your time, talent and treasure,” remarked
Nick Abraham.
Philanthropic support is the backbone of
every Catholic high school. Nick, Jim,
and Jack embody a philanthropic spirit
that involves giving their time, help and
care to causes they support to make
their community a better place to live
and raise families. Elyria Catholic is
blessed to have Nick, Jim and Jack as
alumni and past parents who continue to
graciously support the Elyria Catholic
school community.

Night of Celebration
A Resounding Success!
Over 400 guests lined up to purchase car raffle tickets, silent auction items and
boxes of candy for a chance to win $5,000 through the Panther Ball raffle at
the Elyria Catholic Night of Celebration Gala & Auction. The generosity of
supporters helped Elyria Catholic set a new record — raising nearly $130,000
in support of our students and their families.
“The resounding success of the event is attributed to our donors’ deep commitment to
Catholic education, and their philanthropic support of our mission,” remarked President/
Principal Amy Butler ’80. Veteran auctioneer Bob Frantz ’86 led the guests in a new paddle
raise initiative: Sponsor a Scholar. This alone raised nearly $50,000 in support of tuition
assistance. The evening was also an occasion to honor three Elyria Catholic alumni who
for more than 20 years have donated a new car for the raffle to raise money for the school.
Students thanked car dealership owners Nick Abraham ’60, Jim Herrick ’70 and Jack Matia
’75 with hand designed thank you cards and framed artwork of the Panther stadium.
“We have a deep loyalty (to Elyria Catholic),” stated Jim Herrick. Also new this year, was
the opportunity to win a 3-night stay and airfare to Samuel Adams Brewery Tour in Boston.
Guests enjoyed dinner catered by Brennan’s Catering and dessert provided by ACDC
Cupcakes. The evening continued with dancing to Outta Dodge. The funds raised by the
Gala make it possible for Elyria Catholic to continue to offer a quality, comprehensive
education for our young men and women.

ALUMNI FEATURE
The Call to Serve: One Family’s
Journey of Faith and Service
Every once in a while, if we are lucky, we come across an individual with such zeal for life and work
that it strikes a chord of admiration and respect for that person. Even rarer is the opportunity to know
an entire family that carries those traits. Such is the case with the Humphrey family. EC Alum Deacon
Patrick Humphrey, his wife Donna, and their youngest child, Brian, have embodied the spirit of
service to the community through their charitable actions, faith-filled attitudes, and caring dispositions.
Deacon Pat, or “Deac,” as he is affectionately
known, is the current head of the Theology
department and an educator at EC.
Responsible for teaching about the
importance of serving those who need
help the most, Deacon Pat has strived to
ensure that his senior pupils understand the
value of how communal service can be a
blessing for all parties involved. Describing
the call to serve as “The Need,” Deacon
Pat emphasizes to his students about the
importance of becoming engrossed in the
church or in the community in a number of
ways once they graduate from high school.
“Like the Nike mantra... ‘Just do it.’ Get
connected to a parish. Find families your
age who also share the faith and then look
for your opportunity to get involved!” shares
Deacon Pat. This lesson has been his goal
and successful mainstay since his Elyria
Catholic tenure began 15 years ago.
Grounded in his faith, and speaking with a
gentle, humorous invocation, Deacon Pat
provides guidance in several areas to both
students and adults. He officiates the daily
morning communion prayer services at the
school, coordinates the Peer Ministry
program — an organization of students to
assist with peers with spiritual guidance
—preaches at least once a month at St.
Jude Parish in Elyria, helps to prepare
couples for marriage via counseling and the
Pre Cana program, performs baptisms,
and coordinates Confirmation formation
programs around the diocese. And these
are just a small handful of the service
activities in which he continually engages.
In addition to his many acts of vocational
service to the school and to his parish,
10 Elyria Catholic High School Magazine
requires constant communication with
his wife, his pastor, and the school
administration, he believes that he has
developed a sense of awareness and insight
throughout his familial life, which he uses to
teach through real world experiences. He
encourages both students and adults to
seek out the opportunities to serve wherever
possible and do what you can to make and
be the difference. “Spirituality is much, much
more than ‘My personal Relationship with
God.’ That is only part of the journey.”

Deacon Pat also holds the roles of husband
and father. Having taken a somewhat
unorthodox route to the Diaconate, Deacon
Pat was already married and had started
his family when he responded to the call to
serve the church. He admits that he was
constantly told by many that he should
become a man of the cloth. But, it was the
advice of one man, the late Bishop William
Cosgrove, which finally drove him to strongly
consider the idea. His family’s response
was one of enthusiasm and unconditional
support, which he admits was, from the very
beginning, 100%. Having been married now
for 40 years, Deacon Pat comments that
he has gained a depth of understanding
on how to balance his life as a minister,
a husband, and father. Indicating that it
If there is not an adage about how behind
every faith-filled, enthusiastic deacon, there
is a strong-willed, caring woman, there
should be. Mrs. Donna Humphrey, wife to
Deacon Pat Humphrey for 40 years, has
thrived as a businesswoman and mother
while establishing her own faith-based
service to those who are in need. Coming
from a family full of giving, serving
individuals — including her grandmother
who would serve sandwiches and coffee
to the vagabonds who would jump off the
trains near the family farm — Donna credits
them as the major influence on her life to be
a servant to others. It was this love of giving
back and paying it forward that led her to
become increasingly involved at her parish,
St. Jude Church. Indicating that she has
always had an interest in music, Donna
reveals the enjoyment she feels when
worshipping. “I have always had an interest
in music and have found it very fulfilling to
be able to use the gifts God has given me to
help others worship Him.” Donna indicates
that she has been blessed to work with
many fine, talented people during her years
as the contemporary choir director.
ALUMNI FEATURE
Although she knows her limits and takes
things as they come, Donna finds it difficult
to deny people her time. However, she
admits that she loves everything she does
in service to others. In addition to directing
the contemporary choir at St. Jude Church,
Donna has also served on the finance
committee, the liturgy committee, assisted
with the children’s choir, and helped with the
Pre Cana program for engaged couples.
However, her most significant service work
stems from the foundation known as
Blessing House. Formed, quite literally, in
St. Jude’s own backyard, Blessing House
is the brainchild of Donna and Sister Mary
Berigan, a former principal of St. Jude
School in Elyria. The organization was born
out of the idea of providing children with a
safe environment to stay during periods of
turmoil in their families. Having had previous
experience advocating for child safety,
Donna and Sr. Berigan used their knowledge
to assemble Blessing House in 2005.
Donna’s primary role at Blessing House has
been as the business manager ever since its
conception. “We developed Blessing House
as a children’s crisis care center that cares
for children up to 12 years old when their
parents are having an emergency and need a
safe place for them to stay.
More recently, the youngest son of Deacon
Pat and Donna and EC alum, Brian ’98, is
currently on the path to the priesthood. For
the last two years, Brian has been studying
at seminary in Los Angeles. However, not
unlike his father, Brian’s journey to Holy
Orders was somewhat unorthodox. After
graduating from EC, Brian obtained a degree
in music engineering and moved to California
to pursue a career in the music industry. “I

Seminary in Camarillo, CA, where Brian is
currently studying.
moved to Los Angeles and began working at
a well-known studio as a “runner,” making
coffee and picking up food for recording
artists […] I worked my way up the ladder...
Runner, 2nd Engineer, Engineer, Producer.”
During this time, Brian had the enviable
fortune of working with artists such as The
Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, Jay-Z, Diana
Ross, and Bruno Mars. Yet, despite his
success, he always felt the need to please
everyone, which he admits caused anxiety.
Eventually, he came to the realization that
music was a way to build relationships with
people, not just a means to an end. Brian
began to shift his attention from the music
industry to a life of ministry and service.
Brian indicates that he learned that the
process was just as important as the
product. Instead of having to perform
service for others, he began to understand
that the experience of prayer and the act of
serving more often affected his affinity for
building meaningful relationships. As his
focus shifted from music to ministry, Brian
volunteered at a nursing home, which he
credits as the catalyst that allowed him to
make the leap into other service projects.
“The best part about visiting the nursing
home is when we would sit there and just
be. We had nowhere to go and nothing to
accomplish. Just them and me and God.
Chillin’.” Later on, he would get involved
at a local parish with people closer to his
own age and participate in retreats, music
ministry, prayer groups, and functions to
assist the homeless and destitute. He
admits that the choice to respond to the
call to serve can be difficult with all the
distractions in life, but implores people
to try. He encourages those who may be
considering a life of religious devotion and
those perhaps seeking happiness outside of
themselves to slow down and focus on how
they can be instrumental in serving others.
Taking the path to the priesthood is not an
easy undertaking, even for those who begin
the journey at a far younger age than Brian.
In his case, though, Brian has the added
challenge of leaving his secular life and
career. Though he knows that the changes
will be gradual and ever constant, his family
has provided a powerful boost through their
unconditional support. Over the last few
years, Deacon Pat has kept in constant
contact with his son as he continues the
necessary training. He feels elated that
someone so close to him has responded to
the call to serve. “[…] I have never seen him
happier. He is at peace. I am proud of him.”
Understanding that it takes an enormous
amount of courage to enter the priesthood,
Deacon Pat commends his son on
“Spirituality is much, much more
than ‘My personal relationship
with God.’ That is only part of
the journey.”
– Deacon Pat
accepting the call and opportunity to serve.
So too does Donna. She explains that while
he constantly tried to live in the moment,
there was a constant desire within him.
“There was also a deep spiritual part of him
that came out in his caring and sensitive
nature, his desire to find truth through his
questions and his conscious awareness of a
world much bigger than himself.” For Brian,
the call to the priesthood may not have
been typical, but with the support of his
family and his renewed faith, he knows
that he can readily respond.
Familial legacy can have profound effects
on future generations. The Humphrey family
continues to build its legacy through its
numerous contributions for the good of
mankind. Through faith, experience, and
patience, they have demonstrated how the
innate good in people can be found and
spread to others. Their efforts exemplify
the best side of humanity.

Living Stations of the Cross
The “Living Stations of the Cross” began
in the 1998 Lenten season. Eleven area high
school students memorized lines and stage
direction and presented the live enactment
of the Stations of the Cross to parishioners
at St. Jude in Elyria. It was so well-received
that after just a couple of years, other area
parishes began to request the presentation

Each January, Dr. Michael Hoffman

Michael describes his experience:
“It’s a wonderful way to start the year
by giving some of our ‘time, talent

Armando Cordoba has been one of
our bus drivers the past few years and

surprised to see the shirt that
Armando was wearing that day. It was
nice to see a little bit of home 3,000

Alum Embraces Entrepreneurial Spirit and
Environmental Awareness on the North Coast
Growing up, Dan Kubiak ’98, always took an interest in the
outdoors. Through his experiences as a Boy Scout, his work in the
corporate realm, and his naturally curious and creative nature, he
and lifelong friend and business partner (also named Dan) crafted
DANSOAP, a 100% natural laundry soap made in Cleveland, with
90% of its ingredients locally sourced. The Prowl caught up with
Kubiak to talk about his inspiration for such a unique local product.
After graduating from EC in ’98,
where did you attend college and
what did you major in?
our region. This still is one of the
friendliest places I’ve ever been.
I attended Ashland University and majored
in Philosophy. I found that a liberal arts
education taught creativity, problem solving
and laid a foundation of critical thinking
that has benefited me in a wide range of
professional pursuits. I could probably cite
Mrs. Knox’s senior English class as the most
important influence on my choosing to
major in Philosophy.
In what way did your high
school experience shape
or affect your professional
and entrepreneurial
pursuits?
What inspired you and your friend
Dan to create DANSOAP?
Lake Erie is such a beautiful part of [the]
natural world. I have so many memories
sailing on it in summers with Dan, and now
my kids love splashing in the waves and we
all drink that water and eat the fish from it.
It is painful to look at the beauty of Lake Erie
while knowing that it is a heavily polluted
body of water. DANSOAP is a small
contribution to clean water. We wanted
to create a product that works well, is
affordable, and is safe for the environment
once it reaches our waterways.
What drew you back to the
Cleveland area?
My wife and I lived on the coast of North
Carolina for a few years and were drawn
home to the tall hardwood trees as well as
the honesty and warmth of the people from
Elyria Catholic provided a stable
and consistent foundation for my
teenage years. It is easier to dream
and take risks when you feel like
your footing is solid.
Best friends since childhood, Dan Kubiak ’98 and
Dan Musson promote their all-natural soap company
DANSOAP at a local market.
Your website mentions a
commitment to responsible
business. What, in your opinion,
does that encompass?
Every action we take has a consequence.
A responsible business acknowledges this
and in the least seeks to do no harm. At
best, a responsible business contributes
to betterment of our communities and
environment.
As we grow I’d like to see DANSOAP utilize
zero waste buildings that improve the
aesthetics of a neighborhood, pay wages and
benefits that can support a family, and sell
high quality products at a reasonable price.
Paper bags of all-natural DANSOAP laundry

74 Elyria Catholic students spend spring break
volunteering to make a difference
Alternative spring break is exactly what it sounds like: an alternative to the typical sun, sand and beach
spring break that many high school students plan.
The students of Elyria Catholic have been
volunteering during their spring break for
the past four years, helping those in need
while enriching their own lives, too. In 2014,
18 students immersed themselves in a
mission trip to Central America; this past
spring the students stayed stateside.
Seventy four students rode a charter bus for
18 hours to arrive in Columbia, Mississippi
with the task of helping the community
residents clean up the debris caused by a
deadly tornado that ripped through their town in December 2014.
The EF-3 tornado knocked down trees and power lines and
destroyed businesses. The students spent their days chopping down
trees that had been pulled down by the tornado and cleaning up
debris. Many students had never heard of Columbia before they
arrived, but the trip had a big impact on them. “I was a little nervous
coming here because I didn’t know what to expect,” said Ryan
Turner, a 17-year-old junior. “I don’t think the experience changes
lives until you are here. I feel so much more committed to God
because of this.” Associate Principal Mike Wisnor works with the
National Recovery Network to set up the trips. Wisnor said the
students want to help, adding, “They want to do good because
they have a natural sense of philanthropy and a natural sense of
goodness. We do the work as part of the Gospel. Hopefully, we can
inspire others to see that there are so many more needs.”
We do the work as part of the Gospel.

First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association
PARTNERS IN ELYRIA CATHOLIC’S MISSION TO
SERVE OTHERS
First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association (FCSLA) is a fraternal
benefit society that ranks among the top fraternal societies in the
United States. Founded in 1892 in Cleveland, Ohio FCSLA has
identified two of its primary concerns of support: caring for others
and involving young people.
Tapping into both mentioned focus areas, Elyria Catholic was
encouraged to seek funding from the organization for the school’s
new service program: “Alternative Spring Break.” This new
experiential, service learning program spoke to the mission and vision
of FCSLA of promoting the temporal and spiritual welfare of people
through charitable activities. Through a generous gift of $10,000 from
FCSLA the Alternative Spring Break program became a reality.
The $10,000 gift helped students, who gave up their traditional
spring break, to participate in meaningful service projects
throughout the country. Some of the past projects include: relief
work in Henryville, Indiana; clean-up efforts in New Jersey from the
damage done by Hurricane Sandy; and most recently, students
working in Columbia, Mississippi to help a town and its people
recover from a tornado.
Elyria Catholic High School and its students are grateful for
the support it has received from First Catholic Slovak Ladies
Association. These immersive service experiences help build a
community of caring and justice among our students which reaches
out and responds to the needs of others. It guides students to
develop leadership skills and Christian citizenship that is lived
out through the message of Jesus Christ.
Career Day
On Friday, March 13, 2015, EC hosted a variety of professionals,
community members, and alumni for its largest Career Day to date.
St. John Medical Center of Westlake, who co-sponsored the event,
brought 20 individuals from various professions, including
physicians, human resources, information technology, finance and
accounting, medical technology, social work, and occupational and
physical therapy.
Elyria’s Ridge Tool
Company also
provided several
of their employees
to share their
experiences. In
addition, a few
alumni came back
to participate and
present to the
students, including
Ted Mahl ’74
(architect), Joe Bott
’04 (lawyer), and Ryan Gorney ’99 (information technology). Other
fields represented included veterinary medicine, law, education,
fashion, and engineering. Each presenter offered inside advice and
background information on his or her profession.
The goal of the day was for the students to receive comprehensive
information on their top three career choices. The event was the
brainchild of Amy Butler and St. John Medical Center CEO Bill
Young, and executed by EC guidance counselor Ms. Chelsea
Burkle. Burkle surveyed the student body in December 2014 to
determine and organize the pool of presenters. Then, she put
together each individual student’s schedule for the day. Burkle
shares that the event was hugely successful in part because of the
large number of professional presenters, but also because the
students had the opportunity to hear about the careers that most
interested them. The students were also provided with a t-shirt,
courtesy of St. John Medical Center.
MARCH FOR LIFE
Sixteen students braved the winter weather to join the
“Right to Life March” in Washington, D.C. on January 22,
2015. The trip was organized by Associate Principal,
Mike Wisnor and Campus Minister, Dean Robinson.
Traveling with the students was the Avon chapter of the
Knights of Columbus, who generously provided
transportation for the students and staff. The students,

National Basilica.

Girls Soccer Program Celebrates 20th Season
Another Lady Panther soccer season has begun. The Lady
Panthers team ended their fall 2014 season with a record of
16-2-4, just one game short of playing for the state title.
The 2014 season also marked the program’s 20th
anniversary. After the team’s successes last year, and many
recent successful seasons, it may be easy to forget that the
powerhouse program came from humble beginnings.
Kathleen Marsh Granlund ’94 started playing soccer at age 5. “Dad
coached [girls] all those years in the city league. I got to high school...
[and] it bothered me a ton that I would have had to play on the boys’
team…[but] after numerous encouraging talks from mom, she
convinced me to give it a try,” she said. It should be noted that her
mother, Patricia Marsh, known to many as “Mama Marsh,” was a
supportive presence on the sidelines for many players, for many years.
Jennifer Marsh ’97, Kathleen’s sister, also joined the boys’ team her
freshman year. “My dad never missed a game, and I never played,”
she said. Three other girls joined the boys’ squad that year. “My
dad…recognized the talent in my female teammates that was going
unnoticed and underutilized on the bench. He made the decision at
the end of that year to do something about it.”
Their father, Coach Andrew Marsh, founded the team in 1994.
He volunteered and served as both coach and trainer. The squad
practiced wherever he could find field space, played games at
odd hours (because the team did not have permission to use field
lights), and recruited parents to drive the vanpool. The players wore
the leftover, oversized jerseys from the boys’ team, with numbers
in the 40s and 50s. Most of the team’s equipment came from the
Marsh family’s garage.
“I’ve always told the athletes you only fail when you quit trying,”
Coach Marsh said. “We took our hand-me-down uniforms, got a
schedule and began.”
That first year, the team consisted of the four girls from the boys’
team, close friends of those players (including a number of people
who had never played soccer before), and several girls who had
been cut from the volleyball team. “We were unknown in the
women’s soccer community, so our first year was a hodgepodge of
games against JV teams, practice squads, and other teams trying
to make it in the sport,” Jennifer said.
The team ended up going 10-3-1. “We did very well,” Coach Marsh
said. “More importantly everyone wanted to come back and do
it again.”
Coach Marsh led the team for 13 seasons, finishing with an overall
record of 127-81-26. Under his leadership, four players became All

NSCAA Scholar All America Team. Another, Erika Kleinholz ’00, was
the first soccer player to be inducted into the Elyria Sports Hall of
Fame. Many players have gone on to play in college.
“There [were] always growing pains, as family you work through
them.” Coach Marsh said. “[We were] a small school thrown into a
very difficult conference. With determination and desire, EC grew,
won North Coast League Conference in 1997 and got [our] first of
three District Runner-ups in 1999.”
Coach Marsh’s commitment to the program, and to all of the
players who passed through EC under his leadership, can be seen
and felt in the successes of the program today. “I believe the closer
you get to the state finals the more talent wants to play for the
school,” Coach Marsh said. “EC went to D3, more talent enrolled
and is now getting closer to our goal of becoming state
champions.”
It has also had another very real and lasting impact. “My dad, very
quietly, inspired an entire generation of women and taught us that
we could, in fact, do anything. He taught us that it didn’t matter
what other people thought or said about us as long as we went
out there and did the very best that we could,” Jennifer said.
Coach Marsh said he has many fond memories, almost too many to
name them all. “It’s not necessarily the winning that’s memorable
but the process in getting there,” he said. “[And] of course, the love
of the game.”
Anne Wilson Yu ’00 resides in Sharon, Massachusetts, with her
husband and two children. She played soccer for four years at EC,
then club soccer at Kent State University, and met her husband
while playing soccer in Boston. She works for the Massachusetts

50th Reunion – September 25-26, 2015
The weekend
started with a
social evening of
greetings and

the Knights of

Friday. The next
evening, forty-seven classmates, plus their spouses and guests,
enjoyed dinner, live music and socializing at Sweetbriar Country
