Applause, please, for our Media Partner:
WELCOME
from the Producing Artistic Director
Welcome to Next to Normal and the start of our 25th Anniversary Season.
It is amazing to think about how this city has changed since we first set down
roots here in 1988. Philadelphia was a very different place. This was before
Mayor Rendell set out to revitalize Center City – cheering and cajoling, a tireless
advocate for the idea that Philadelphia could be a world class city. before
Stephen Starr, Ellen Yin and the restaurant renaissance of the 90’s. before Old
City was transformed into the vibrant and vital neighborhood it is today.
Terrence J. Nolen
The Philadelphia theatre community has likewise flourished. The Philadelphia Live
Arts Festival & Philly Fringe was founded. Dozens and dozens of theatres have
been created (with more new companies being created each year). Audiences
are growing. Artists are choosing to live here – buying homes, building careers,
starting families. Nationally, Philadelphia is now recognized as an important
theatre town with a rich and robust community of artists and audiences.
What a time to be in Philadelphia.
Next to Normal marks our 144th production – a body of work that includes 35
world premieres, 31 musicals, and 25 children’s theatre productions. but the
story of the Arden’s history is best told by remembering some of the remarkable
productions and performances that have lit up our stages: Tom McCarthy’s Willy
Loman. Joilet Harris’ Caroline Thibodeaux. Michael Hollinger’s Opus. Baby Case.
My Name Is Asher Lev. Frog and Toad. Carla belver’s Violet Weston.
I’d love to hear from you what your favorite production or performance is.You
can share your thoughts by emailing [email protected]. Over the
course of the season, we’ll post your responses in our stagebill and blog – along
with photos, comments from the artists you mention, and any behind-the-scenes
gossip and background we can dig up. Theatre is an ephemeral art form – after
a production closes, it lives on most powerfully in the memory of those who
experienced it. What lives on in you?
Much has changed since we started in the Walnut Street Theatre Studio
back in 1988, but the essence of our mission has remained unchanged: to tell
great stories by great storytellers. And to be a part of this great city and our
extraordinary cultural community.
Thank you for joining us.
P.S. As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we are also planning for the future with
the creation of the Hamilton Family Arts Center, a new building located just three
doors north of the Arden at 62 N. 2nd Street. The fundraising campaign is in full
swing and construction has begun! We look forward to keeping you updated
throughout the year.

DIRECTOR’S Notes
I am drawn to musicals that tell complex stories: from a revenge-seeking barber to would-be
Presidential assassins; from the recounting of the “opening” of Japan by Admiral William Perry
in 1853 to the story of an African American woman struggling with change set against the
backdrop of the Civil Rights movement. These musicals were written by writers who dared to
believe that the American musical can tell any story.
I am also drawn to plays that tell the story of the American family: Death of a Salesman;
A Moon for the Misbegotten; August: Osage County. These plays speak eloquently about the
overwhelming emotion that can reside in familial relationships and the legacies that can be
passed down from generation to generation.
Next to Normal brings together these two great passions: the story of the American family and
complex and audacious musical theatre. Composer Tom kitt has talked about seeing the plays
of O’Neill and Miller as a teenager and wanting to create a musical that had that emotional
punch and power. In addition, he and Lyricist/Writer brian Yorkey have acknowledged their
debt to the groundbreaking work of Stephen Sondheim. When Next to Normal won the
Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2010, kitt was quoted as saying, “Without…Stephen Sondheim,
there is no Next to Normal.”
Original and courageous, Next to Normal tells the story of a woman who struggles with bipolar
disorder and the impact this has on her family. Like the great family dramas of Miller and
O’Neill, this musical depicts the extraordinary complexities, challenges and contradictions that
families can confront. Plus it has a kick-ass score.
Says kitt, “I’m sure there were those who, early on, questioned whether Next to Normal could
be told in the musical theatre. but from the beginning, brian Yorkey and I cared immensely
about these characters and ultimately just had to tell their story. In fact, we were certain that
a musical was the best way to do justice to it, for only the songs could adequately encompass
the human and emotional dimensions of mental illness. Sondheim’s gritty relentlessness at
getting to the heart of deeply personal human stories showed us the way.”
I am thrilled to be working on this production with such an extraordinary group of artists,
designers, musicians and technicians. Special thanks to Designer Jorge Cousineau, who marks
his 40th(!) Arden production with Next to Normal; to krissy Fraelich, who I have watched
grow up and have known for over 30 years; and to my family – who provide the light.
P.S. We will be celebrating the Arden’s musical theatre history with a 25th Anniversary
Concert on Monday, November 5th featuring some of our favorite performers re-creating
some of their favorite roles. This one-night-only concert will be an event not to be missed.

From Villain to Super-Genius to Next to Normal:
The Bipolar Character in the 20th Century
By Sarah Ollove, Assistant Director/Dramaturg
Early in the 20th century, mental illnesses in fiction were rarely well defined, often jumbling
aspects of different mood disorders together. Media depictions painted the mentally ill
as grotesque monsters – think of the villains in Psycho or the Halloween franchise. These
portrayals contributed to the still widely held belief that all serial killers must be mentally
ill, a trope often parroted by contemporary police procedural shows.
Even when singled out in mid-century, bipolar was still used as shorthand to explain
criminal behavior, such as in Stephen King’s Misery in which a deranged woman with manic
highs kidnaps her favorite author. More complicated is William Styron’s Sophie’s Choice.
Sophie’s boyfriend Nathan is portrayed as a magnetic and talented man who loves Sophie,
but in his manic moments, becomes violent, out-of-control, and abusive. Though not a pure
villain like King’s Annie Wilkes, Nathan’s good qualities are negated by his disease.
As bipolar became better understood in the second half of the 20th century, a new
prototype emerged: the tortured genius. Appearing almost exclusively in biographies of
historical figures, examples include Kirk Douglas’ Van Gogh in the 1954 film Lust for Life, Ed
Harris’s 2000 portrayal of Jackson Pollack, and 2003’s Sylvia Plath biopic, Sylvia. Even Michael
Cunningham’s novel The Hours suffers from this tendency, although Cunningham’s stylistic
choices add a bit of nuance. All hint that while the disorder destroys the personal lives
of the artists, it makes accessible a wellspring of inspiration and drive unavailable to the
general populace.
Finally, in the late 90s, hit TV show ER featured guest appearances by Sally Field as Maggie
Wyczenski. While lauded for its in-depth portrayal, Maggie’s noncompliance with treatment,
and rapid mood swings received criticism from the mental health community. They had
waited a long time and Maggie was hardly the poster-patient to help bipolar people gain
acceptance in the wider world.
Recently, the Showtime network debuted two shows featuring major characters with
bipolar. While occasionally suffering from the mental-illness-as-superpower stereotype,
Homeland’s Carrie Mathieson fights her disease while remaining committed to her
treatment. Shameless features a character whose day-to-day struggles on the ground with
the disease reverberate through her family. Unlike her all-or-nothing predecessors, she is
honestly torn between wanting to be a good family member and missing the intensity of
her feelings off medication.
Like Shameless, Next to Normal depicts the daily battles and conflicting desires of characters
with bipolar disorder. Diana’s journey looks like a dance: one step forward, two steps
back. She’s not a tortured martyr, she’s not a mad genius and she’s not the bad guy. She’s
a normal person dealing with a disease that afflicts 2-3% of the population. There are
millions like her. The musical recognizes that bipolar people are more than a collection of
symptoms and even fictional characters shouldn’t be defined by their disease.

WHY WE GIVE
Bob and Nancy Elfant
We have fond memories of our early times at the Arden. After trying out other Philly
theatres with Nancy’s parents, we were thrilled to discover all the Arden had to offer:
the intimacy, the consistent high quality and variety of productions, the welcoming
atmosphere... An early dinner in Old City and then a show became a tradition. It was
quality time with family, and the best thing going. We had found our theatre home. As we found out, the Arden is even more than just good shows. It’s really well run. The
box office folks are warm and accommodating, the staff is always friendly, and everyone
generally makes us feel welcome–the overall operation is just so smooth. And, of course,
co-founders Terry and Amy are virtually ever-present, either in the lobby greeting the
crowd or bringing their own special flair to welcoming us all on opening nights. They are
truly the warm and beating heart of this special place.
We went from being subscribers to Sylvan members, and then became members of
the Board. We were hooked. Along the way we were introduced to the Arden for
All education outreach program, which pairs teaching artists with schools in need,
providing experiences for children who otherwise would have little or no exposure to
theatre. It was a moving experience that reinforced all our good feelings about the Arden.
So, when we were asked to make a gift in support of the new building, it was a nobrainer. The Hamilton Family Arts Center will allow the Arden to expand children’s
programs, add more space for actors, increase community outreach, and further build
on all the positives of the Arden’s influence in Old City. We are so confident in the
leadership of Amy and Terry and the Board, that we elected to make the largest charitable
commitment of our lifetime. We encourage all who read this to join us in supporting this
effort, to whatever degree you are comfortable. It’s a guaranteed winner.
Bob and Nancy Elfant
Arden Theatre Company’s
A campaign for Education and Innovation.
The Hamilton Family Arts Center will be a place that celebrates kids,
embraces new work, and invests in the vitality of the community. This
building will provide the room to expand the Arden’s new play development
work, create a permanent home for Arden Drama School, and increase
opportunities for community partnerships. The Hamilton Family Arts Center is our
investment in the future.
You can join in this dramatic expansion of the Arden! The $5.8 million
campaign to fund this project is more than 60% complete. Your support will bring
us one step closer to turning the vision for the Hamilton Family Arts Center into a
reality.
