Know Your Boat, Know the Rules
Boating season is finally in full
swing on Lake Mohawk and many of
us are enjoying the beauty of Lake
Mohawk and all it has to offer.
Some of us are just cruising or
sightseeing, some are kayaking,
some are sailing, and others may be
fishing, waterskiing or tubing. How
you choose to enjoy the boating season is your choice, but please
remember that boating on the lake or
anywhere else is a privilege and not
necessarily your right. And as with
any privilege, it comes with responsibility and should not be taken lightly.
As a boater, it is your responsibility
to know the general rules and regulations of boating and any others that
may be specific to what it is you
choose to do. It is also your responsibility to operate your boat in a safe
and courteous manner.
The Lake Mohawk Marine Services
Committee publishes a set of Marine
Regulations specifically for Lake
Mohawk. When was the last time you
read them? Have you ever read
them? If it has been awhile or never,
maybe you should think about a
refresher or a first time read.
Copies of the regulations are available at the Club office and they will
be available on the LMCC website in
July. There are also rules for boating
published by the New Jersey State
Marine Police. Are you familiar with
those? Anyone who operates a boat
should be.
Do you have your state and LMCC
tags? No boat is to be operated on
Lake Mohawk without New Jersey
and LMCC boat tags. Are yours current and on the boat?
How about your safety equipment?
Do you have enough life jackets, fire
extinguisher, paddle, horn or signaling device? Do your lights work?
Check before you go out at night.
Remember if you are out at night,
your lights must be on at all times. If
you are under power, both bow and
stern lights must be on and you
should be traveling at a no wake
speed. If you are anchored or just
floating, you still need lighting. Make
sure your anchor or stern light are on
so others can see you.
We all carry our cell phones on our
boats these days. Do you have the
2
number of the Lake Mohawk Marine
Patrol? (973-440-8767) If not, take a
minute and enter it in your contacts.
You might be glad you did.
Inboard and inboard/outboard
owners, how about the inside of your
bilge? Is there oil and/or gas present?
If so, that fluid may leak or be pumped into the lake. Have it looked at,
keep the lake clean.
A few of the rules that I observe
being broken on an almost daily
basis are: wakes inside the “No Wake”
zones. This one is easy, no wake
means no wake, simply look behind
your boat. If there is a wake, you are
going too fast. This also applies when
operating your boat within 200 feet
of shore and after dusk (do you know
how far 200 feet is?). I bet the lakefront owner whose boat and dock are
being rocked by your wake does.
Remember too, that non-powered
vessels always have the right of way
over powerboats.
Orange ski flags. These are meant to
be displayed when towing a skier or
tuber. You should remove it when
you are not pulling someone behind
your boat. Tubes should not be
towed through the “No Wake” zones.
Speaking of “No Wake” zones, the
entire lake is a “No Wake” zone
between dusk and 7:30 a.m.
Boating on Lake Mohawk is a great
experience however you choose to
enjoy it. There is a lot of lake to share
and if everyone makes an effort to be
a little safer, a little more aware and a
little more respectful of others, we
are all going to enjoy the lake more.
Be respectful of fishermen who
enjoy quietly fishing in undisturbed
peace. Please do your best to keep
wakes to a minimum for those skiers
who cherish that rare, early morning,
flat water. Give the sailor or kayaker a
little space. Keep you music at a reasonable level and remember that
sound travels at night.
The most important thing on the
water is safety. Awareness, consideration and courtesy will ensure we all
have a safe lake for our families, our
fellow boaters and ourselves.

The Aesthetics Committee
The effectiveness of our committee
will depend on each Clubmembers’
cooperation in helping to maintain
the beauty of our community. Others do care. We encourage you to
notify our committee of any concerns you have involving the aesthetics of Lake Mohawk, which we
will present to the Club Manager to
resolve.
FOR EXAMPLE: Have you been
concerned about:
• Illegal dumping of trash and
debris on lake properties.
• Illegal parking of boats and trailers.
• Disabled and abandoned cars and
trucks.
If you care about these or any related issues, the Aesthetics Committee has provided this form for you
to notify us of your concerns.
Thank you for your interest and
support. We look forward to your
help in maintaining our Club as an
outstanding lake community.

Summer has begun. Yippee! Thank
you to all of the officers and families
who have put so much time into

back. Thank you also to the families

Some housekeeping notes: 1) Remember to have your LMCC ID/tags
since spot checks are happening. 2)
We have had issues with the trash.
Please take it with you. Even if you
bag it, do not leave it in the shed or
curbside. A Mama bear and her cubs
are roaming and the deer love to tear
into the bags too. 3) Left behind
swimsuits, shirts, flip-flops, even prescription glasses, have accumulated
so check throughout the summer if

In August we are Canoeing/Rafting
down the Delaware on Sunday the
4th. If you have not been on this
seven-mile ride you are missing out.
Plenty o’ rain lately, easy ride on down.
We meet at the beach at 7 a.m. and
return fiveish. Cost is still $55/adult
and kids 12 plus. Kids 11 and under
are free. We do not make any money
on this event and Greg is happy to
coordinate this fun, all-day adventure,
once again. Cost includes a canoe or
raft, life jackets, plus a BBQ lunch
that we stop for about half-way
down. Details were emailed to all
members and the RSVP has passed,
but if you want in, see Greg ASAP.
We hope to have a Kids Sports
Tournament in August. Anyone interested in helping plan the games

Now that we kicked off the season
with a party we are ready to go! A big
thank you goes to everyone who
came out to the Season Kickoff Party,
the weather was not welcoming, but
the attendees were. A million thank
you’s go to Krista Wicker and Kim
Panaite for all their help setting up
and cooking food. Lastly, I want to
thank all those who stayed to help
clean up, it really is appreciated and
it makes a huge difference at the end
of the night.
Please do not move the picnic
tables out from under the tent. If you
use the fire pit please bring your
beach or camp chairs to sit to enjoy
it. Certainly, if you do move them, be
kind enough to put them back from
where you got them, so the next family can enjoy both the picnic table
and a table-free beach.
Also, we ask that you do not turn
around the benches near the bocce
courts... those are set out to enjoy
watching a game and as you may
notice they are not strong
enough to be moved often, they will

need early replacing if they are constantly turned back and forth.
Thank you for your kind consideration of these two points.

It will take place July 20th and run

Inflatable Red Bouys are Important in the Lake
The inflatable red bouys in the Lake mark the diffusers that pump Alum
into the water thus preventing Algae from growing. Please keep away
from the red bouys at high speeds. If you feel an unusual tug it may not
be your skier or tube, it may be the Alum lines. If for some reason you
caught a line please dislodge your boat from the line.

INITIATIVES
Our Infrastructure Assessment -
2013
As a result of the economic downturn over the last five
years and the effects of numerous storms that began
in late 2011 (most notably Superstorm Sandy), many
areas of the Lake Mohawk Reservation have been
adversely impacted, to varying degrees, by the damages inflicted and necessarily delayed planned infrastructure programs. In order to properly address the
matter, four initiatives have been refocused to address
the following infrastructure matters:
1. LMCC Private Roads
2. Drainage
3. Sandy After-Effects
4. Reservation Aesthetics
These topics will be covered in more detail next month
but I want to share our plans with you at this time. In addition, I want to thank you for your patience, understanding, and willingness to work with us.
1.
LMCC Private Roads - Under the leadership of
Mike Kolody, our Engineer, and Curt Ross, our Road
Supervisor, a detailed assessment is being made of
our entire 25.5 miles of private roads. The entire length
has been divided into 173 segments and each segment is
being rated with respect to width, visual, berms / gutter,
pothole repair, alligator cracking, joint separation, settlements, and milling and paving requirements. The survey
should be completed by the time you read this article. The
data will be used to define a structured, prioritized forward program beginning this year and to be continued
onward indefinitely.
2.
Drainage - In excess of $300,000 of requested
drainage projects have been identified. Over the
last five years, generally $30,000 to $40,000 was
allocated for such projects each year. Whether or not this
allocation is inadequate and, if so, to what level it must be
raised to adequately serve the needs of our community, is
being addressed at this time. Further information will be
forthcoming next month.
3.
Sandy After-Effects - As reported previously (May
2013 Papoose, pages 18-19), considerable debris,
fallen trees, leaning trees, and tree stumps are still
scattered throughout the Reservation, on both private and
Club properties. We are currently identifying and prioritiz-
16
The Papoose
ing the Club areas for initial follow-up. Several approaches are being considered with work planned for the
Toboggan Park area (between Woodbine Trail and Rocky
Terrace), Alpine Field (between Summit Road and Valley
View Trail), and other critical areas beginning in June
2013. Additional details will follow next month. Effective
follow-up discussions with Sparta Township are in
progress.
4.
Reservation Aesthetics - With the assistance of two
Lake Mohawk Trustees (Dean Reinauer and Jim
Wardell), Ted Gall, a member, and our internal
staff, we are continuing to address many aesthetic issues
relating to properties in disrepair and/or properties in
foreclosure (approximately 15 residences identified to
date), locations of damaged / leaning trees (multiple
areas), locations of privately owned properties with excessive accumulated debris, fallen trees on or from LMCCowned properties, etc. In addition, a number of
comments have been received regarding the aesthetics of
all ingress / egress roads into / out of the reservation (significant improvements have already been accomplished
within the last three months), cars / trailers / boats left at
the roadside, missing or faded signage, unkempt lawns,
etc. In addition, we are aware of cut-through traffic entering North Shore Trail. The task is daunting but we are
determined to address all issues. Our response plans will
be further discussed next month. As I have said before, we
are determined to return our Reservation to an acceptable
and pleasing appearance, of which we can all be proud.
I also thank those of our community who have completed
and submitted The Aesthetics Committee Form that is
printed in each edition of The Papoose. Please continue to
return the Form to the Lake Mohawk Country Club, Attn.:
The Aesthetics Committee.
As previously stated, our follow-up program to address
aesthetic matters will be to work with individual homeowners, Sparta and Byram Townships, financial institutions associated with houses in foreclosure, and, when
required, the initiation of legal actions. Your endurance
has been appreciated and your continued patience and
support are requested as we travel the road to recovery.

Jack Frey Earns the Rank of Eagle Scout
A special court of honor was held by
Boy Scout Troop 150 on Sunday, April
21, 2013 to award the rank of Eagle
Scout to sixteen year old Jack Frey.
Jack is the son of Clubmembers
Janine and Bill Frey and is a junior at
Pope John High School. One of Jack’s
favorite moments at the ceremony
was pinning medals on his parents.
Eagle Scout is the highest rank in
Boy Scouting and it takes many years
of hard work. To earn the rank of
Eagle, a scout must show leadership,
service, outdoor skills, citizenship,
character and personal fitness by
earning at least twenty-one merit
badges and he must complete a special community service project or
Eagle project.
Jack’s Eagle Project was renovating
an isolation room for cats at Father
John’s Animal Shelter. The project
took a total of 104 man hours. Jack
received volunteer help from boy
scouts and friends. He raised money
to fund the project and had matching
contributions from two organizations. There was an open house to
unveil the new room.
Jack also earned a total of twentyseven merit badges, became a Broth-
erhood member of Order of the
Arrow and earned the Ad Altare Dei,
Pope Pius XII and the Pillar of Faith
Award, which is given to scouts who
receive all four catholic religious
medals during their Cub Scout and
Boy Scout years.
Jack plans to stay active in the troop
and continue going on camping trips
and support other scout activities
like the annual Spaghetti Dinner. In
addition to scouting, Jack is involved
in soccer, track, Pope John Robotics,
Squires and he plays piano with the
Pope John Jazz Band.
Congratulations Jack on a job well
done!

June 3rd brought wind to our lake,
perhaps a bit too much so that our
racers opted for using the opportunity to do some shake down cruising.
By the following week we were ready
for the Gabor Cup Regatta and for
our Hawaiian Makani Fest. Three

with Rich Miner and crew Gail Miner
and Ken Potts taking first place followed by Don Okner and crew Brad
Newton second and Chuck Chute
with crew Dave Newton taking third.
Constance Gill and Angela Hopkins
were our race officials. We sailed two
triangles and a windward leg for both
races. Gail Miner provided some
really nice trophies, wooden sailboat/
picture frames. The Makani Fest
party followed. We sincerely thank
the Miners for their hard work in
making the party a success.

Paddle
There has been an
increase in paddle sports
craft on the Lake.
PADDLERS HAVE
TO KNOW THE RULES
OF THE ROAD FOR
BOATING SAFETY.
The number one rule is that a PFD/Lifejacket is required to be readily accessible,
this means that if you are not wearing the
lifejacket it must be within arm’s reach. It is
best to wear the lifejacket, especially during busy days, inclement weather and
night time. Consider it like wearing a bicycle helmet or wearing a seat belt in a car.
Kayaks, canoes and other paddlers should
never assume that powerboats can see
you on the water.
Always watch out for Power Boats.
Keep a sound signaling device such as a
whistle handy in order to attract attention
if needed.
At night a white light must be shown
toward oncoming boat traffic. Paddlers
may carry either a flashlight or lighted
lantern that can show a white light in sufficient time to prevent a collision. This is
both a federal and state regulation.
Always make sure that you tell someone
where and when you are paddling, also
weather changes quickly so get to shore
as quickly as possible.
Paddle together, it is sometimes more fun
and enjoyable when paddling alongside
someone or in a group.

Lake Mohawk Tennis
Different Tennis Ground Strokes for
Different Folks.
The 2013 tennis season at the Lake
Mohawk Tennis Club has gotten off
to a memorable start, two teams battled it out during the “Spring Team
Tennis” event on June 1st. With the
help of 15-13 and 13-11 tie-breaker
victories, team “A” outlasted team
“B”. A pizza party broke out afterwards and everyone left entertained
and well nourished.
Things really warm up at the Lake
Mohawk Tennis Club in July with the
annual “Luck of the Draw” tournament scheduled for Saturday July
20th. Check in at 6:30 with doubles
play starting at 7:00. The pairings
could be same sex, mixed or something even more exotic. This has
traditionally been a very well attended fun social event where everyone
is a winner.
The Friday night tennis/social mixers have been tremendously well
attended this year, arrive any Friday
at 6 p.m., or so, play some good doubles, rub tennis elbows with old friends
and rally with some new friends.
Make sure to step out, regardless of
your level and play open doubles
over the weekend, Sunday morning
for the men and Saturday morning
for the women. For the singles playing lobber lovers, Wednesday evening is men’s singles and Monday
evening is woman’s singles or doubles.

Lake Mohawk Ski Hawks
What a way to start the season!
Blessed with great weather, great
water conditions and a great crowd,
the Ski Hawks opened our 2013 show
ski season with a bang. With only one
COLD day of practice, and a few new
skiers, everyone one who skied,
drove, announced or helped out in
any way deserves congratulations for
a job well done. I think everyone who
came down to the Boardwalk on a
splendid Monday morning should
be proud of this team. Now we set
our sights on the Fourth of July and a
really fun show.
On a more serious note, the Lake
Mohawk Ski Hawks would like to
share the greatest “secret” to a wonderful water skiing experience. Trust
us folks, we have learned a few things
water skiing over 50 YEARS ON LAKE
MOHAWK! Being on the water to
enjoy boating is fun and fun is what
skiing is about to our young and notso-young skiers. Start the day right,
before you get to the dock, by preparing for a safe day on the lake. Nothing ends a day on the water more
quickly than an injury. SAFETY is the
real secret to a great day on the lake.
As boaters and skiers we have a
responsibility to be safe for those on
our boat, others on the lake, and the
entire Lake Mohawk community.
Everything we do as Ski Hawks is
built on habits of safety. Ski Hawks
understand how much fun it is to
show off for your friends and family,
nothing is more satisfying to us than
to see HUGE crowds at our shows.
Yet every part of our show is built on
a foundation of safety and consider-

ation for our fellow skiers. Many of
the stunts we perform require special
equipment and training; our shows
include a “do not try this at home”
announcement for this reason. Only
registered and insured Ski Hawk
members have the privilege to use
the jump ramp for any purpose. We
understand that trying a new skill or
trick is exciting, but not at the cost of
an easily preventable injury. Please
speak to us after the show or at one
of our practices if you want to try
something new or want advice, so we
can get you safely on the right track.
We also want to take a moment to
remind our fellow boaters that safety is everyone’s responsibility. While
we welcome everyone to come to
the Boardwalk area to watch us ski,
we ask you to do so safely, especially
if you are arriving by boat. Please be
aware of our boats and skiers during
practices on Tuesday and Thursday
evenings 6:00 p.m. until sundown
and Saturday and Sunday mornings 9 a.m. until noon. It is best for
boats to travel along the East Shore /
Plaza end of the Boardwalk when
entering and exiting the area. We
encourage every boat operator to be
focused, alert and aware every time
you are on the lake, no matter where
you are. Operating your boat in a
courteous, considerate manner increases everyone’s safety and enjoyment. We ask you to be especially
alert when approaching the north

Endorphin 5K or 2K Run/Walk for Brain Disease
Cures
Each time we lace up our sneakers
for a walk or a run we know that our
brain is as important to condition as
our bodies. Our brain helps keep our
heart going, helps us maintain our
breathing, moves the muscles in our
legs and provides us with motivation
and support in those extra-long
miles. Imagine for one moment what
it would be like if the relationship we
have with our brain did not exist as
we know it. Imagine if there was a
disease or injury blocking our brain’s
ability to think clearly, move, or even
remember how to get home.
Brain Health is the reason IES Brain
Research Foundation is proud to
bring The Endorphin 5K or 2K Run
or Walk on September 28th, to Wild
West City in Stanhope, NJ for the second year. It will provide runners and
walkers of all skill levels, ages 5 - 80+,
a chance to participate in a fun event
for a great cause: to raise money for
research to help fight, prevent and
find cures for brain diseases and
disorders such as: Alzheimer’s and
Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia,
brain cancer, stroke, traumatic brain
injury, PTSD, epilepsy, autism, addiction, pain, MS, etc...
The course will be a moderate varied trail behind Wild West City and
the 5K will be timed. Participants
have a choice to pay a fee or raise
$100 or more in pledges.
There will be team and individual
prizes. There will be prizes for categories that have three or more teams,
banks, schools, scout troops, law
firms, colleges, clubs, police or fire
depts., armed forces, etc., registered
by September 21st. 5K/2K registrants
will be eligible to win door prizes,
including a grand prize. First 50
5K/2K registrants will be put in a
drawing for a $50 gift card.
Businesses registering a team, five
or more 5K and/or 2K walkers and/
or runners, by September 1st will
receive free publicity.
Please Support Your Local Stores Shop Locally
Sometime seemingly small acts have an impact
bigger than you ever imagined. Take family spending.
You may think you are just fulfilling your family’s want
or needs when you shop or dine out. Think Again.
The choice of where you spend your money makes a
big difference to your community. Spending your
money with locally owned independent businesses put it to work directly
helping your local economy, just one way your community benefits from its
independent businesses. They use goods and services of other locally
owned independent businesses thus re-circulating your money about 3.5
times longer locally than if you spend it at a chain store. This creates greater
community health and prosperity.
Now imagine the impact on your community if
everyone shopped locally owned. You can stop
imagining and help make it a reality.
There are a variety of corporate
sponsorships available for your business. The IES Brain Research Foundation values all sponsors and goes
above and beyond to get your company’s name to a wide variety of
people using several forms of media.
Join Team Eastern from Eastern
Propane, our Silver Sponsor, on
September 28th. For details on how
to register, volunteer, donate or
sponsor, please visit www.iesbrain

The House Committee donates S10,000!
The Lake Mohawk “Second Annual

despite occasional showers. With 14
area restaurants offering some of
their signature menu items inside
the Clubhouse, face painting for the

fun-filled day for Clubmembers and
the public. Many thanks for your
participation and support.
The event was also sponsored by
the lake management company

Attention All
Boaters
Boating on Lake Mohawk is a great experience,
whether cruising, fishing, sailing or waterskiing.
There is a lot of lake to share and if everyone
makes an effort to be more aware and respectful of others we are all going to be safer.
Be aware of the damage an unnecessarily large
wake could be doing to docks, boats and other
property. Look behind you, how big is your wake?
Be respectful of fishermen who enjoy quietly fishing in undisturbed peace. Please do
your best to keep wakes to a minimum for
those skiers who cherish that rare early morning flat water.
Lastly, be very aware of traffic and skiers near
the Boardwalk during the Ski Hawk practices on
Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 6:30 pm until
sundown, and Saturday and Sunday mornings
9 am until noon. It is best for boats to travel
slowly along the East Shore/Plaza end of the
Boardwalk when entering and exiting the area.
Keep in mind that non-powered vessels have
the right of way over powerboats.
The most important thing on the water is safety. Awareness, consideration and courtesy will
ensure we all have a safe Lake for our families,
our fellow boaters, and ourselves.
