Republic of the Philippines
Province of Iloilo
Message of the Governor
I
t is with great pride and honor that we have
sustained the gains that we have achieved in our
campaign to institutionalize reform and change in
the provincial government.
With the help of various sectors we have succeeded
in reaching the goals that we have set particularly in the
eight
strategic
themes
of
my
administration.
Most
importantly we have regained the trust, respect and faith
of our people.
Because of our good governance, Iloilo province was
awarded the Seal of Good Housekeeping and has won
several
citations
in
DILG’s
Excellence
in
Local
Governance (EXCELL) Awards. Yours truly was also
awarded as Most Outstanding Governor in the field of
social services by the Association of Social Welfare and
Development
Officers
of
the
Philippines,
Inc.
(ALSWDOPI).
We intend to sustain what we have started and it is in this light that I usher all the
provincial government employees and my fellow public servants to join me in this cause. It is my
profound wish that our Province and its profile will continue to be attractive.
This 2014 Provincial Profile shows the facts and figures as well as other relevant
information on the socio-economic situation of our province.
I know this document could be of great help to development planners, policy makers,
researchers, private sectors as well as potential investors.
Let us join hands and work together to achieve our ultimate goal – a progressive Province
of Iloilo.

Message of the Vice Governor
D
evelopment does not happen easily, nor is it
hopelessly difficult to achieve. It needs careful
planning, involving everyone concerned,
communicating regularly, establishing a clear
goal for the projected change, executing the
plans, and reinforcing the change once it is in
place.
A famous quote from Mahatma Gandhi states that, “Constant
development is the law of life, and a man who always tries to
maintain his dogmas in order to appear consistent drives
himself into a false position.” Thus, development is only
confirmed if the condition of the society changes positively.
As Ilonggos continue to struggle hand-in-hand for
recovery from the catastrophic disaster in 2013, the
provincial government has been successful in leading the
progression of the province. The rehabilitation and
improvement of infrastructure facilities needed to support
economic growth is given utmost importance same with the
agriculture-based industries such as vegetable production,
swine raising, fishery, livestock and other forms of livelihood.
The area of risk reduction and disaster preparedness has been
advanced and there is continuous increase of undertakings in
trade and commerce. Moreover, the social services are also
being strengthened in terms of upgraded hospitals and wideranging medical programs.
I commend the Provincial Planning and Development Office for the time and effort in gathering
of data from different departments and agencies to provide us not only concise but significant
information to be used as reference in identifying available resources for local development and in
determining the current physical, social and political condition of the province. The annual preparation
of this document allows the readers, policy makers, investors, benefactors and the private sector to make
evaluation and assess the changes or development as well as formulate predictions for future socioeconomic expansion.
As one, let us remain committed in reaching our goal to attain political solidity and economic
success, prioritizing the interest of the people above all.

Message of the PPDC
L
ast November 8, 2013, Typhoon Yolanda,
one of the strongest tropical cyclones
ever recorded, devastated portions of
Southeast
Philippines.
Asia,
It
particularly
was
the
the
deadliest
Philippine typhoon on record, killing at
least 6,300 people in this country alone.
Relief
and
rehabilitation
efforts
from
international and national agencies which followed,
made use of relief maps and information from
publications such as this as baseline to augment current
damage area assessments in planning where their
assistance is necessary.
That catastrophe and many other similar to it, show the invaluable importance of
reliable and timely data which this profile aims to provide.
Not only at these situations are these data useful; this publication has also been
utilized in investment promotion portfolios, economic fora and other activities beneficial
to the development of the province. Rest assured continuing efforts would be made to make
this publication more relevant, timely and responsive to the needs of investors, academe
and planners. Proactivism will be the main thrust in delivering these data.
We hope that this publication, the Socio-Economic Profile of the Province of Iloilo
for calendar year 2014, serves its purpose.

The New Iloilo Airport is located in Brgy. Duyanduyan, Cabatuan, Iloilo with 2,500 m. x 45
m. runway and a new terminal building with state-of-the-art computerized facilities to accommodate
flights from the North and South of the country. Stands as one of the busiest airports outside Manila,
the new airport of international standard is built on a wider and panoramic location to cater the
increasing influx of passengers visiting Iloilo.
The province’s airport is one of the major airports of the country and serves as a jump off point
to different provinces in Panay Island accommodating daily flights from Manila and Cebu. The New
Iloilo Airport Terminal could now accommodate more passengers and cargoes. The 2,500 m. stretch of
runway was overlaid with asphalt to accommodate heavier aircrafts with an adjacent runway strip of

4.Tourist Destinations
Iloilo is a beautiful province resplendent with natural wonders, rich history, and warm, engaging
people. Iloilo, they say is the heart of the Philippines. It is a small province with a big package. It
prides itself as the center of education, trade, commerce and tourism in the region. It lies in the midst
of both; air and sea traffic. From Manila, three major airlines have daily round trip flights that take
about an hour, and by boat, two shipping lines have regular trips taking about 20 hours, 12 times
weekly. A relatively short trip and you are magically transported to a totally different environment.
If ever, a place could truly be called a melting pot of people and cultures, Iloilo is it.

PROVINCE OF ILOILO
Annual Provincial Profile
2014
Iloilo is a junction over which Malay, Spanish, Chinese, American cultures met in the course
of centuries. It has a colorful history that stretches back to a rich pre-colonial culture and the arrival
of the first settlers, the Malayans sometime in May 1212. Sailing across the seas from Borneo and
landing at the mouth of Siwaragan River at the southern tip of Iloilo in the town of San Joaquin. Its
modern history began in 1566 when the Spaniards under Legaspi, established their first settlement in
Oton. Christian doctrine was propagated, with the church as their house of worship and where
people acquired their first education.
Today, over 1.7 million people with distinctive cultural heritage live and work in Iloilo.
Everywhere you go, you will see many breathtaking discoveries where one is pleasantly surprised.
Images of Iloilo in the eighteenth century show manorial old houses, in their ornate facades
combined with Classical Western influences and folk art motifs. Relics and mementos of the past
abound. Mute yet eloquent, reminding everyone of Iloilo’s colorful past bequeathed to the present.
Wonderfully atmospheric old architecture blends harmoniously with its cosmopolitan landscape.
Peaceful climate, dynamism of the local economy, a better quality of life, rich pool of skilled
workforce, and excellent accessibility and linkages are factors that help maintained its competitive
position among other regions in attracting private investments and penetrating new markets for its
products.
Iloilo is a place of perfect balance. It is fast-paced yet relaxed. The luxuries of cosmopolitan
living in Iloilo City, the province’s capital, complement the breathtaking beauty of the great
outdoors.
Iloilo truly offers more than the usual, Culture and Arts, Destinations, World-class festivals,
Cuisine, People. Wherever you go, whatever you do, you will always enjoy the warmest and
friendliest welcome in Iloilo.

such as the station of the cross at the sides and
Dante’s interpretation of heaven and earth in its
