ANTOINE MARTIN BOOTH C08 www.antoinemartin.ch Swiss Contemporary Watchmaking has a new name With his own watch manufacturing company at the heart of Switzerland, in Alpnach near Lucerne, master watchmaker Martin Braun has realized his vision of establishing a new and unusual luxury watch brand featuring his own movements. After almost two years of intensive development work, the first ANTOINE MARTIN movement developed and manufactured entirely in the company’s workshops is a fascinating hand-wound calibre with an integrated perpetual calendar, large date display and six-day power reserve. The AM 39.001 movement is equipped with a new, modified escapement known as the High Performance Escapement (HPE). The movement also features another ANTOINE MARTIN innovation, which was designed specifically, as its name suggests, to stabilize balance wheel amplitude: Aerodynamic Amplitude Stabilization (ADAS). Amplitude stabilization is crucial to generating an even rate, which ensures that the manually wound movement remains as accurate as possible. The first collection by ANTOINE MARTIN units these innovations within a modern, progressive case design. The case could hardly be more complex and plays with polished and matt surfaces. The strikingly designed flanks, which lend the case its unique lines, are also individually secured. 20 - GENEVA TIME EXHIBITION 2012 Overall, the case is extremely sophisticated in design and comprises 84 individual components. Mastering perfection ANTOINE MARTIN stands for a consummate blend of watchmaking expertise, traditional craftsmanship and clarity of vision. The brand puts Martin Braun’s 30 years of watchmaking experience in an entirely new light. His impressive debut with a Perpetual Calendar will provide the foundations for more outstanding and unusual creations. “In future there will be no limit to our innovation,” is how Martin Braun summarizes his philosophy. The ANTOINE MARTIN brand stands for luxury and technical sophistication. For watches that stand out because they make unmistakable design statement. “Our watches are made for a discerning clientele and for connoisseurs who take an interest in technology, have high expectations regarding quality and are looking for something out of the ordinary,” is the way Bruno Jufer, CEO at ANTOINE MARTIN, describes the company’s strategy. GENEVA TIME EXHIBITION 2012 - 21 ARCADIA BOOTH F08 www.arcadia-geneve.ch Watchmaking tradition recovered Fired by an unflinching desire to perpetuate the watchmaking heritage of the famous Fleurier Watch C°, Claude Sanz is proud to present ARCADIA VINTAGE 22: a quality timepiece steeped in excellence and tradition, reserved for connoisseurs and collectors of fine watches. Like the AC01, Arcadia’s historic first model revisited in 2010, ARCADIA VINTAGE 22 reflects the desire to retain the brand’s DNA in both mechanical and aesthetic terms. The heart of the timepiece is an historic Valjoux 22 movement, with components made by the Fleurier Watch C° in the 1930s and rediscovered in an perfect state of conservation. Arcadia watchmakers have called on all their technical mastery and savoir-faire to assemble the model’s mythical movement in keeping with the values and attitudes of Swiss watchmaking tradition. The beauty and minute precision of this daring achievement can be admired through the watch’s sapphire crystal case-back, engraved with the name of the original manufacture. 22 - GENEVA TIME EXHIBITION 2012 The ARCADIA VINTAGE 22 also displays aesthetic continuity. The watch’s sporty-chic appearance highlights the watch’s original functions (chronograph, tachymeter and telemeter), polished angles and Côtes de Genève finish, transcending the heritage of the Fleurier Watch C° yet in no way distorting it. The fully waterproof 43mm-diameter case offers a modern interpretation of the traditional Arcadia look. The contemporary dial plays on the contrast between white and black to ensure easy time-reading. The streamlined blued hands guarantee the watch’s Arcadia roots yet look decidedly 21st century. The pull-out crown and movable lugs matching the original, angular push-pieces give the timepiece a vintage feel, reflecting the perfect blend between tradition and evolution. Limited edition of 35 pieces. The collection and innovations can be characterized as the ultimate collision between modern technology and classical craftsmanship, leaving a hybrid time piece that utilizes the best of both. CABESTAN BOOTH K08 www.cabestan.ch Highly Exclusive Watchmaker Presenting Cabestan Trapezium, Eric Coudray teaches us a new lesson in geometry. Based in Geneva, Cabestan is a unique actor in the universe of highly exclusive watchmakers. The brand is famous for the Winch Tourbillon Vertical with its retro-futuristic design and revolutionary movement of extreme precision. In 2010, Cabestan collaborated with another tenor of the luxury industry, Ferrari, to create the Scuderia Ferrari One by Cabestan to honour the mythical automobile brand and its 60 years of Formula One racing. Creator of the iconic Winch Tourbillon Vertical movement, master watchmaker Eric Coudray, propels the brand into a new dimension with the Cabestan Trapezium: an exceptional timepiece that defies the greatest laws of mathematics. In Euclidian geometry, a quadrilateral with no parallel sides is called a trapezoid, or trapezium. This simple, yet elegant geometric form was the concept from which the new Cabestan Trapezium evolved. The result is an intricately woven combination of quadrilaterals that creates a strikingly powerful design and a remarkable showcase for its amazing mechanism. Recognised as one of the most renowned master watchmakers in the world, architect of the legendary Gyrotourbillon, Eric Coudray 30 - GENEVA TIME EXHIBITION 2012 is also the soul of Cabestan, its designer and engineer. The gentle and asymmetric shapes of the Trapezium case are slightly and elegantly angled in height, toward the wearer’s gaze. Engineered by Eric Coudray, the movement of the Cabestan Trapezium is one of the most precise timekeeping mechanisms in the world. The mechanism incorporates a chain and fusee that automatically corrects for the loss of torque in the mainspring and delivers a constant force to the tourbillon. But even the tourbillon is special. To provide enhanced compensation for the disturbing effects of the Earth’s gravity on accuracy, Cabestan Trapezium’s tourbillon is mounted vertically. The result is a phenomenally robust movement that stretches the limits of micromechanics. In keeping with its ultra-exclusive heritage, Cabestan Trapezium adapts itself to the tastes of its owner through a creative fusion of materials, finishings and tones. Each piece can be personalized for a truly unique experience. The ultimate luxury. CLAUDE MEYLAN BOOTH C10 www.claudemeylan.ch Claude Meylan : Sculpteur du Temps In the depths of the Swiss Jura and more precisely in L’ Abbaye, a typical village in the luxury watch making Valley (the “Vallée de Joux”) where great winters gave birth to great ideas and achievements in time keeping, the family company CLAUDE MEYLAN SA maintains proudly the watch making know-how inherited from their ancestors. DIETRICH BOOTH A07 www.dietrich-watches.com Time is Life “Designing time is about life, our life: rich in moments and emotions. I dream of embracing life with a collection that offers a watch for each of these moments”. Emmanuel Dietrich, designer and founder of DIETRICH watches and doted with two decades of major brand experience, fell in love with watches after being offered an mechanical piece for his 7th birthday – a traditional gift in Besançon, the watch-making area where he grew up. After learning the fine mechanics of the art with a watch prototypist friend of the family, he studied furniture and interior design at the renowned “Ecole Boulle” in Paris. His creativity quickly took flight with prestigious clients such as Hermès for wich he soon created the “Harnais” watch. Convinced that there is space for a new approach of time in the today’s watchmaking world, he went on in 2009 to create his own distinct universe. DIETRICH presented his first pieces in 2011 and will show further models and declinations at the Geneva Time Exhibition. The creation of a real new horological identity combining design, luxury and exclusivity is the aim. This means finding new shapes and items able to be declined and adapted on all timepieces pieces in order to carry the DNA of the brand. 40 - GENEVA TIME EXHIBITION 2012 Each piece is designed to provide the perfect mix between emotions and functions. The rational designing process ensure a real answer to the needs of these specific moments or activities, but would be nothing without the comprehension of their emotional feeling and their translations into shapes and colours. Each technological innovation makes the pieces unique and distinctive. A new approach demands new solutions serving the purpose of the timepieces. The best components, parts and movements ensure reliability. All watches are motorized with mechanism that have proved their extreme reliability on a long period of time. Aesthetics are clear, modern and sharp, while drawing from the long tradition of watchmaking. Be modern doesn’t means ignore the tradition, but to renew it and maintain it alive. Because life is a continuous process. EVILARD WATCH BOOTH F01 www.evilard-watch.com Evilard, the revival of a dynasty of watchmakers A new key player in watchmaking? Only time will tell. HERITAGE WATCH MANUFACTORY BOOTH J07 www.hwm-watch.com Heritage Watch Manufactory – Tribute to Time We claim to construct true perfection - the precise mechanical watch. This fundamental chronometric principle, the art of regulation, fuels both the passion and the drive of the Company. It is the fascination of achieving the highest possible accuracy of the movement that motivates the HERITAGE WATCH MANUFACTORY and this commitment is amply demonstrated in every single one of its chronometers. This is why this Swiss Manufactory does not utilise conventional movements. It relies solely on those it has itself developed, in which each and every detail has been newly thought through and optimised. The HERITAGE WATCH MANUFACTORY creates extraordinary watches — extraordinarily precise and extraordinarily long-lasting. This is only possible due to the independently developed concepts incorporated into the movements, which, with their technical innovations, set numerous milestones on the road to the perfect mechanical watch. As well as the special balance, all chronometers possess individually engineered mechanisms for fine regulation of the escapement, the hairspring, and the balance itself. Several models additionally incorporate an innovative constant-power escapement mechanism, while the twin mainspring barrel contains a new type of mechanism that minimises frictional losses. 50 - GENEVA TIME EXHIBITION 2012 The same fundamental principle is behind the selection of the materials used, which, together with the special movements, guarantee the enormous longevity of the chronometers. To achieve the extraordinary durability of the movements, the gear trains only use cycloid teething and fully hardened gear wheels and pinions. These state-of-the-art innovations mean that HERITAGE WATCH MANUFACTORY timepieces not only represent the summit of perfection in chronometry, they are also perfect examples of the traditional craftsmanship of master watchmakers. This perfectionist approach to the watches can also be seen in the design, whose inspiration is rooted in the chronometry competitions of past centuries. JOHN ISAAC GENÈVE BOOTH M01 www.johnisaacgeneve.com John Isaac Genève - Watches fort the new generation The John Isaac Genève watch is tradition remixed. On the one hand, it’s a high-end Swiss timepiece, crafted using centuries of know-how. On the other, it’s a modern design, with a look that stands totally apart. A John Isaac Genève watch isn’t a contradiction. It’s a new vision for a new time. Today, you can be two things at once. And sometimes more. That’s not being complicated. That’s being yourself. A John Isaac Genève watch is inspired by the idea that personality matters. It’s distinctive. It’s meant for the individual, the one with a sense of style that’s not like the rest. It’s for those who know that it doesn’t start with the watch. It always starts with them. John Isaac conceived these watches to be chic but cool, young watches, designed to appeal to the ‘new generation’. Edoardo Bugnone, CEO of John Isaac Genève says: “This new generation is not defined by age or background. It’s a mind set, a matter of style and freedom of choice.” Elliptical faces, soft curves, big numerals and strong colours - John Isaac Genève watches are instantly recognizable and unique in their style. There are four lines to the collection: One (the original), Icon (the watch for all-rounders, also available in XL size), Rough Sea (an active-sports model), Grand Prix (a chronograph complication) 54 - GENEVA TIME EXHIBITION 2012 as well as two Limited Editions - Jumping Hour and Quantième (featuring complication movements developed by John Isaac Genève in collaboration with Dubois-Depraz). “We carefully selected each component from both a design and cost standpoint”, explains Edoardo. “The craftsmanship and quality are Swiss. The style and price are not. Aiming to keep the cost down is also reflected in our distribution strategy. John Isaac Genève watches are predominately sold online at www.johnisaacgeneve.com, but can also be found at important watch destinations such as Harrods (London), le Bon Marche & Colette (Paris) and Village (Geneva). The domed sapphire glass gives the watch its ergonomic shape. 56 - GENEVA TIME EXHIBITION 2012 The wide hands are like joined arms, a symbol of the principle “united we stand”. They echo the famous quote from Friedrich Schiller displayed inside the strap : «Wir wollen sein ein einzig Volk von Brüdern» (We wish to be a united brotherhood). Innovative design The crown is the true signature of the JORDI Swiss icon collection. Inside a red cylinder, the Swiss flag is graphically decomposed and recomposed like a modern sculpture. Detail-oriented The ”Swiss Horizon” strap of the Club 100 was designed by Ernst Oppliger, one of the contemporary masters of paper-cutting. Founded in 2007 by the eponymous Lionel Ladoire together with Richard Piras, Ladoire are the enfants terribles of high-end watchmaking, the punk rockers of luxury timekeepers. Andy Warhol managed to turn every art genre on its head. Jean-Paul Gaultier ripped up the rule-book of fashion to create a whole new sartorial philosophy. Now, Lionel Ladoire has reinterpreted classical watchmaking, recasting it in an audacious new light by challenging tradition with a resolutely avantgarde approach to haute horlogerie. Take Ladoire’s Black Widow collection, for instance. Ah, yes, the Black Widow. She is that feisty femme fatale whose lethal charms will ensnare her prey in bonds of irresistible desire. She is that mesmerizing temptress whose powers of coercion will cruelly lead her victim to an inescapably sticky end. She is that voluptuous vamp who has lent her name to Ladoire’s Black Widow collection, recently enriched with an exciting new chapter. Step forward Mr Ice. Mr Ice stands out from the crowd – big time. The bodywork is assertive and virile thanks to the striking case crafted in high-tech Grade 5 titanium of which the natural finish gives a fittingly glacial luster, while the muscular strap hand-crafted from luxuriant black leather completes the cool and confident exterior. 58 - GENEVA TIME EXHIBITION 2012 Just as stunning is Mr Ice’s distinctive face – a face full of depth that won’t be forgotten in a hurry. The dial architecture, open-worked to reveal the intricate movement beneath, is multilayered and delineates three offset zones – hours, minutes and seconds – mounted on an innovative system of ceramic micro ball bearings, while the central hand smartly displays a second time zone. The expressive face is so striking, it leaves little doubt that a complex character lurks beneath it. Indeed, turning Mr Ice over reveals an intriguing nexus of blackened bridges as well as the sleek micro-rotor of the sophisticated automatic winding system. All Ladoire movements are designed, developed and assembled by Ladoire in their Geneva atelier and the limited numbers in which Ladoire’s timepieces are crafted ensure their consummate exclusivity. Mr Ice, for example, is available in an exclusive limited edition of just 12 pieces. There is no escaping the spell of the Black Widow and, but like Ladoire, she will rock your time! LOUIS ERARD BOOTH G09 www.louiserard.ch 80 years of mechanical horology Founded in 1931 by Louis Erard, the watch company has regained exceptional momentum over the past eight years. The launch of the collection named “Excellence” marks the birth of a fourth major line of timepieces signed Louis Erard, combining expertise and fine craftsmanship in an Haute Horlogerie spirit and at eminently affordable prices! This new collection comprises a total of seven models – five for men and two for women – all available in steel or rose gold versions. These include Power-Reserve display and Regulator or simple Power-Reserve variations, a Chronograph with moon phases and 24-hour indicator, and three-hand watches. Even though mechanical watchmaking remains the core of the self-winding models, it is undoubtedly in the hand-wound watches that Louis Erard most clearly expresses its vocation as a movement manufacturer. The two manual-winding models incorporate its uncompromisingly sophisticated in-house modules featuring exclusive and unique complications. The secret of a success story Pure lines, elegance with classic and trendy touches, and above all a love of fine workmanship in harmony with the finest Swiss 62 - GENEVA TIME EXHIBITION 2012 traditions. Louis Erard creates mechanical timepieces because they are vibrantly alive and serve as a reminder that time cannot be recaptured. The watch is more than a machine: the owner can feel it as it turns and occasionally stops. Before being put back on the wrist, it must be observed, touched and restarted – thus creating an authentic and constantly reinvented ritual. Economic rebirth Since its creation 80 years ago, Louis Erard has experienced a variety of ups and downs, including a lengthy eclipse from the early 1990s onwards. The brand was taken over in 2003 by a group of investors headed by Alain Spinedi. His plan was clearly spelled out and involved offering high-quality mechanical watches at decent prices. And time has since proven the watchmaker right, since more than 100,000 watches have emerged from the company workshops over the past eight years. 2008 also saw Louis Erard enter the world of complications with the development of an exclusive module, representing a further step towards Haute Horlogerie at attractive prices! Created in 2000, Magellan was bought up by Mario G. Nargi in 2010, a transition that should propel the brand from its current confidential status to the international renown it deserves. It’s time to reveal a higher profile. The circular dance of time Named after the illustrious navigator, the watches evoking his voyage around the globe. Fernand Magellan thereby demonstrated that the Earth was indeed round – a discovery dating back to 1521 which is clearly evoked in the original and remarkably accomplished Magellan Watch concept. In the models, the hands perform their own round-the-world journey in a strikingly realistic manner; they feature an original shape that moulds the contours of a central half-sphere representing one of the Earth’s two hemispheres, around which they turn. The three traditional hands are enriched by another patented hand indicating the Sun’s position above the Earth: by keeping track of the longitudes appearing on an external ring, the user can always tell at which point on the globe it is noon. 66 - GENEVA TIME EXHIBITION 2012 The three-dimensional dial is unique in its kind and called for the development of a special module on the self-winding base movement, ETA 2893. The four hands are considerably raised thanks to an ingenious system of nested guiding pipes. The result is a perfectly round case that could indeed not be any rounder, since even the bracelet lugs are invisible. Magellan watches are also crafted from noble materials using hand-crafted decorative techniques. From one world to another The first creation, Magellan 1521, features a reproduction on the dial of a world map draw up in this age of discovery. With the Magellan Earth, the historical world map is replaced by a photo of Earth taken in 2010, the year of the brand takeover. An aerial view brimming with promise for the future. MILUS BOOTH F14 www.milus.com MILUS - The playful spirit of time Since 1919, the brand Milus strives to achieve an artistic way to measure the moment and has beautifully represented the outstanding Swiss watchmaking skill of mechanical finesse, graceful movement and exclusivity. Every watch conveys a sensual sense of freedom and the Highly Personal credo of the brand – the luxury of being totally oneself. This philosophy is dedicated to every day of the year, any hour of the day and to all cherished moments. Centuries-old watchmaking tradition Even today, minute repetition remains one of the major technical challenges of the art of watchmaking. Whilst this fine-sounding complication provided a useful function prior to the introduction of the electric light, it today enthuses experts and watch lovers through its unique complexity. Designed to indicate the time during the dark night-time hours, the minute repetition can, on demand, announce the hours, quarter-hours and minutes with harmonious sound within the tiny dimensions of a wristwatch. Pureness of tone and fullness of sound are the challenges faced by the experts. 68 - GENEVA TIME EXHIBITION 2012 Every minute repetition achieved is therefore presented as a masterpiece that is held in high esteem by watch connoisseurs thanks to the craftsman’s skills and precise attention to detail during manufacture. Technical expertise For Milus, the launch of the TIRION Répétition Minutes TriRetrograde represents a significant step. With the complication minute repetition, combined with the fascinating play of the tri-retrograde seconds display that is characteristic of Milus, the company has achieved a high-precision and very ambitious timepiece in line with its philosophy and with an especially «highly personal» mark. The over 400 individual parts of the clockwork movement are put together over more than 140 hours of meticulous work by watchmakers of the highest repute. Each component is decorated by hand and is tested repeatedly beforehand in terms of form and composition in order to optimise the sound quality and the functional precision of the watch. More than a brand, Pierre DeRoche is all about a family spirit, that of the Dubois and the Dépraz families, living since the 1500’s in Le Lieu, a small village in the Joux Valley, in the heart of Switzerland’s watchmaking region. Today, it is through the Pierre DeRoche brand that Pierre Dubois explores the boldest ideas and creates technically sophisticated and exclusive timepieces, following in his predecessors’ footsteps. With their deep horological roots and knowledge of cutting-edge technology, Pierre Dubois is committed to the development of Pierre DeRoche. Coupled with the striking-mechanism’s on/ off function, this device is unique on this kind of watch and gives this exceptional timepiece its intrinsic value. When the alarm is released, the mechanism reveals its secrets: first, the fast-and-slow, then the striking mechanism’s bridge moving into action, and finally the hammers successively striking the two «Chartres» chimes (cathedral inspired, the two gongs turn more than 360° but are of different lengths). With a few clear, limpid notes produced by the best watch craftsmen from the Vallée de Joux, the TNT RendezVous will remind you of your day’s appointments. Series limited to 201 in steel-Titanium and to 21 in Pink Goldsteel-Titanium. In 2012 Quinting releases yet another first: The Moonlight. Quinting created a movement exclusively for this watch, the only “true” moon phase watch. It is the first in the world where the moon revolves around the earth, accurately showing its phases. Meanwhile, every hour a comet shoots around the earth and the moon, always ready to be wished upon. This limited edition is composed of 360 unique pieces, representing the 360 degrees of the earth. Each piece will have a different view of the earth, painted by hand with enamel. “If I wear a Quinting watch, it is because it is the symbol of the Swiss tradition of horology and its future,” citation from a Swiss President 76 - GENEVA TIME EXHIBITION 2012 REGLISSE BOOTH N04 www.reglisse.ch An ode to freedom… with a distinctly personal touch Reglisse arose from a meeting of ideas: those of people in the refined timepieces and Jewelry milieu. RGM BOOTH A06 www.rgmwatches.com History in Watchmaking RGM was started in 1992 by American Watchmaker Roland G. Murphy, and ever since he has been “Making History in Watchmaking” here in America. This simple phrase helps explain much of what takes place at RGM Watch Company. In a little more than a decade, RGM has become a well-known brand among watch afficionados and collectors. We produce only a few hundred watches a year, along with a small number of made-to-order timepieces. While we are constantly striving to produce special timepieces, such as the Caliber 801 and the Pennsylvania Tourbillon, we ensure that the great traditions of fine watchmaking remain in focus. Modern manufacturing technology exists side-by-side with antique, hand-operated machinery. Hand-blued screws and hand-polished components are right at home among the close tolerances afforded by mechanized machines. Our mission is to offer the best watches to our customers, not only the best watches made in the USA, and we believe that this requires equal efforts to improve current methods while at the same time preserving tradition. The RGM web site offers much insight into our customer service ethos, as well as our products. Read the interviews, admire the custom-built watches, watch the films, and you will begin to understand why RGM has so 82 - GENEVA TIME EXHIBITION 2012 many admirers and repeat customers. Having a custom watch can be very rewarding for the owner. It is extremely gratifying knowing that he is wearing a unique, custom-made watch and that he was personally involved in every step of the design process. That is why people who buy an RGM watch often return for another, utilize our repair and restoration services, and tell their friends. The location of RGM Watch Company, a small town in a friendly rural region, is no accident. The old-school approach to dealing one-onone with people is instilled in RGM, and is a reflection of where we live as much as where we work. Likewise, there is great pride in doing a job the right way and providing great value. RGM is proud of manufacturing watch parts and cases in Pennsylvania, USA. In the 1880’s, the great age of modernized watchmaking began in America. Today, both history and watchmaking are alive and well at RGM. The Stormer is distinguished from the other Parentheses models by its 4 additional elements, which allow further color combinations. The different parts of the watch are available in black chrome, yellow or rose gold, or simply in steel. Tellus offers an in house designed screwdriver to tighten or untighten these ornamented screws, to change the parentheses, the additional elements or the screws, without damaging them. Most watch brands project their past into the present. Welder is the opposite. It aims to project the future into the present. The name Welder represents: the welding of emotions between people, the welding of time and space, when travelling through space-time is likely to become a reality by 2075. The Welder watch, designed by Italo Fontana, encapsulates a timeless feature of ageless identity and size. All the watches belong to the same family in its large offering variety. The three-dimensional feature of the dials is a reminder of the layers of space and time between the present and 2075. New series Welder K22 : Sculpted into matt steel, the case can be coated in an oil-slick-blue PVD coating that protects from scratches and scuffs. The endlessly deep dial with its cliffedge numerals is built over a simpler-isbetter movement. The straps are made from a fully cut-through type of coloured silicon so that you never lose your shine. 94 - GENEVA TIME EXHIBITION 2012 Welder K29 Camouflash : The K29 Series has adopted 3 new brothers to their family. With cases created from Welder’s new PVD coating techniques, we have been able to create green, bronze and blue steel on a 3-timezone dial. Welder K32 : In creating the new K32 Welder family, Italo Fontana redesigned the triple-time zone concept. A singular watch containing three movements is not new to Welder, featuring three dials superimposed on a 53mm face. However, the K32 features its third dial on the case edge. Welder K33 : The K33 features a new coloured PVD technology in red, blue and purple. The Welder trademark left hand chrono sits embedded in these jewel tones; a stark contrast to the black 316L PVD steel case. ZANDIDOUST BOOTH J05 www.zandidoust.com Zandidoust: Made-to-Measure Craftsmanship For over 40 years Ali Zandidoust has been inspired by the Orient in designing prestigious timepieces that only a craftsman’s eye – and hand – can master. Craftsmanship is something Ali Zandidoust knows all about. The Geneva-based Iranian has been a master of traditional jewellery techniques for over 40 years. The eponymous brand-founder is greatly appreciated by Middle East clients, and enjoys blending the techniques of jewellery, setting and engraving when designing his exclusive timepieces. Ali Zandidoust qualified as an engraver and setter in 1965. He was passionately interested in jewellery design, and soon founded his first workshop in Iran. The exceptional pieces he produced enjoyed great success among the public and before long he had no fewer than fifteen people working for him. From the Block But the political and financial crisis which hit Iran in the 1980s forced Ali Zandidoust to move abroad. He settled in Geneva, and began his professional career in Switzerland by working for the watchmaking industry. After opening a jewellery workshop in Geneva, he founded his own watch firm in 1991 – aiming to unite 96 - GENEVA TIME EXHIBITION 2012 the three techniques (jewellery, setting and engraving) he has long mastered with such brio, so as to express and share his emotions through the design of luxury timepieces. His approach is highly original. Unlike a poet or painter, Ali Zandidoust does not take a blank sheet of paper as his point of departure. He never works from drawings or sketches. Quite the opposite: the creative process starts with no more than a rough piece of metal, which he sculpts from the block using a file, saw or chisel. Impossible to Fake. So it takes the eye, and the precise gestures, of an experienced craftsman to master the design of exclusive Zandidoust timepieces – which makes faking them impossible. «The distinctive curves and forms of my designs cannot be reproduced on an industrial scale, even with the use of modern equipment,” explains Ali Zandidoust. “You can only fake such designs by hand.” Forgers do not care to take that risk. ZANNETTI BOOTH F09 Z A N N E T T I H A N D M A D E WA T C H E S www.zannettiwatches.com We turn your time into precious Zannetti has inherited an important commitment, which is based on a constructive, conceptual and uncompromising philosophy. The technological excellence of its timepieces, along with the precise hands of skilful watchmakers and craftsmen, contributes in creating unique and highly distinguishing Zannetti examples The art of the goldsmith and the watchmaker, which flourished in Rome had several extremely fortuitous high points in history. The imperial excesses of the 16th and 17th centuries lent great impetus to these activities. Commissions were ordered essentially by the highest ranks of the ecclesiastical hierarchy and noble families. Production in Rome concentrated mainly on ritual and sacred objects and increased considerably when there were special events such as Holy Years. In past decades, artisans workshops were located mainly in Via del Pellegrino: and indeed, in 1680 it was officially compulsory for those craftsmen to live and have workshops in surrounding streets. Zannetti has continued to extend this tradition, by operating from a personal 98 - GENEVA TIME EXHIBITION 2012 watchmaking laboratory in premises in Via Monte d’Oro, in the Campo Marzio area in Rome. The philosophy which animates these workshops which even today remind of ‘times past’, is that only the best craftsmen can produce watches which are unique and impossible to copy, such is the high inimitable quality of the finishing touches. In these ‘antique’ workshops can be found a huge variety of skilled craftsmenwatchmakers, engravers, goldsmiths, jewellers, chisellers, miniature artists, designers, face and back makers, mechanics and engineers. The harmony of the old style workshop is in direct contrast with the modern methodologies and quality control standards implemented there. Each individual craftsman is free to use manual and technical skills in a spirit of maximum creativity, each one contributing to the creation of a timepiece which will be unique and destined to become part of the private collections of watch fanatics spread across the five continents. www.watchonista.com YOUR WATCH COMMUNITY + SHARE YOUR WATCHES AND KNOWLEDGE + MEET WATCH FANS AND PROFESSIONALS + REVIEW WATCHES, COLLECTIONS AND IMAGES + SYNDICATE YOUR CONTENT AND FOLLOW MEDIAS WATCHONISTA IS THE FIRST SOCIAL NETWORK FULLY DEDICATED TO THE WORLD OF WATCHES AND ALLOWS EVERYONE TO CREATE THEIR OWN UNIQUE WATCH UNVERSE. Horological Academy of Independent Creators (AHCI) ANDERSEN GENEVE BOOTH G08 www.andersen-geneve.ch The Watchmaker of the Impossible ANDERSEN GENÈVE makes your horological dream coming true. Svend Andersen, sometimes named «the Watchmaker of the impossible» surprises the world with amazing creations and inventions: world smallest calendar watch, world time watches, “EROS” most animated horological automaton ever made, first wristwatch with “SECULAR PERPETUEL CALENDER” programmed for 400 years. In 1969 he made, as a hobby, his first Bottle Clock which was exposed at the «Montres et Bijoux» Show. This was the very exploit that had brought him the renown of «Watchmaker of the impossible» as it was mentioned in the international press. Indeed, nobody had ever realized such a clock. Patek Philippe got interested in Andersen’s creations and in 1969 he joined their Atelier de Complications. In 1979 he started as an independent. The first success of ANDERSEN GENÈVE, followed by many others: First World Time Watch «Communication» followed by a special subscription series «COMMUNICATION 24» of which his Highness the Prince Consort Henrik of Denmark wears the No. 1. 102 - GENEVA TIME EXHIBITION 2012 Another of Svend Andersen’s achievements has been the «MONTRE A TACT» which allows reading time without turning the wrist is the most perfect support for unique or personalised artwork such as engravings, miniature paintings or stone settings. Also more than 36 unique watches created according to customer desires were realized in the Ateliers at the Rhone riverside. The lady’s watch «Montre à Tact REGINA» set with 8.74 c. diamonds participated at the «Grand prix de l’Horlogerie de Genève». Now is realized also the weekly “QUODTIDIANA” with one week turning dial. Andersen has created several exceptional World Time Watches, starting with the «COMMUNICATION 24» in 1985, the «CHRISTOPHORUS COLUMBUS» in 1992, the world thinnest World Time «MUNDUS», the first World Time Chronograph and the history telling «1884», just mentioning the most important. Now comes the 12th creation of World Time Watches by ANDERSEN GENEVE: “COMMUNICATION 750”. The central dial of blue gold turns once a day and shows the 24 time zones facing 30 names of important cities on the five continents. After several years of work as a professional machine manufacturer, he acquired a degree in mechanical engineering. The click happens when a friend asked him to repair his Morbier. By doing so, he was caught by the virus of the clock making that never left him. He decided to use the mechanics of these clocks that have crossed the centuries and to create timeless works of art. He is so invested in this passion that his whole being is reflected in his work. He has created his own style and turns a simple clock into a mechanical sculpture with a unique beauty. His training as a mechanical engineer allows him to control the functional parts of the clock, to hide it and to magnify its aesthetic parts. His clocks are true sculptures, beautiful works of art with a unique style. 106 - GENEVA TIME EXHIBITION 2012 In 1972, to satisfy his creative needs, he left teaching and became independent. Member of the AHCI since 1988, he is one of its jewels. His creations are appreciated by both connoisseurs and the general public, for the beauty of the mechanical development. Recognized by his peers, the leading brands and the largest clock stores around the world are proud to own and display the clocks of Jean Kazes. His wall and table clocks with or without complications, small or large (the largest is in the Guinness Book), single models or small series, the work of Jean Kazes is unanimously appreciated worldwide. MARC JENNI BOOTH G08 www.nobeltime.com “The family tradition continues” Marc Jenni never wanted to be a watchmaker. “I did not want to follow the footsteps of my father and grandfather and become yet another watchmaker” Marc Jenni points out. “However, his natural curiosity guided him to make a one week stage with Paul Gerber in Zürich”. This one week was enough to awake his enthusiasm for the profession of watchmaking. At the age of 16 he started his watchmaker’s apprenticeship with Paul Gerber and soon was confronted with the complexity of alarm functions, tourbillons and other watch complications. After completion of his apprenticeship, he moved to a « distant land », more precisely to Tiffany & Co. in New York, and there gained his first international experience. In 2008 Marc Jenni felt ready and started with the design of a watch construction that was turning around in his mind for years, “the redefinition of the conventional crown system.” Thanks to the AHCI he was able to present his first creation at the Baselworld 2010; the “Prologue”. Pure and authentic lines, aesthetic simplicity and mechanical ingenuity; this is how the “Prologue” has been described since its appearance. Driven by creating new watch functions and displays Marc found himself a challenge when he was shown a couple of pocket watches 108 - GENEVA TIME EXHIBITION 2012 dating back to 1780, and intriguingly, signed by one Johann Jacob Jenny! Having established that the watches were indeed the works of his own ancestor, Marc Jenni then translated the unusual day indicator which used the astronomical planetary symbols to mark the equivalent day of the week into a contemporary timepiece. This indication is not commonly found on a wristwatch nowadays. Marc Jenni’s new “JJJ” displays the now familiar triangular motif with ‘Time’, ‘Date’ and ‘Wind’, to indicate which function you are adjusting or using, as debuted on the “Prologue” model. Behind the chosen alias “JJJ” hides the epitome of the horological activity of the Jenni family. The abbreviation stands for Johann Jakob Jenni, the oldest known ancestor of the family, who practiced the profession of watchmaker around 1780 in Glaris. “I don’t regret having chosen this profession” Marc Jenni reiterates, “It is a grand pleasure to invite you to accompany me through this time of discovery as I open new chapters in the years to come.” Notes GENEVA TIME EXHIBITION 2012 - 111 Notes GENEVA TIME EXHIBITION 2012 - 113 no compromises / The creation of something totally new, something really special, is our vision.
