Welcome to the NPTC 2009 Yearbook which features the highlights of a truly great Annual Conference held in Nashville. Despite a downturn in the economy and a flu scare days and hours running up to the meeting, more than 800 loyal NPTC members were in attendance for this event. The feedback from attendees during the meetings was overwhelmingly upbeat and positive. Many said it was our “best ever” Annual Conference. We made many changes in the Annual Conference this year, adding more programming elements such as general session panels on Fuel Economy Management; keynote speakers from leading Fleet Member companies; and adding new content to workshops. All in all, we did our best to pack the program with value-added resources that could be taken home and implemented with impactful results. In the end, our slogan – YOU MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN – become a reality for attendees and produced a meaningful return-on-investment. This results-driven approach governs all that we do. For instance, at the Annual Conference we announced the Private Fleet Assessment Program, a web-based management resource designed to help private fleets on their journey to world class. NPTC recognized the responsibility we have to provide members with the information and resources needed to remain successful in this fiercely competitive marketplace. The power of the Private Fleet Assessment Program lies in combining the expertise, industry knowledge of NPTC, Optima Associates, Inc. (a national continuous improvement consulting firm that has helped many private fleets enhance their operations) and Schneider National (the nation’s largest truckload carrier and a lead- 2 ing provider of transportation and logistics services). Fleets navigating the program enter key operating information and assess their performance against some 40 qualitative and quantitative attributes. Fleet performance is scored against world-class standards that were derived from hundreds of industry benchmarks and subject matter experts. Not only does the fleet receive a report comparing its performance to world-class standards, but it receives a set of detailed recommendations to help it improve performance. Another exciting program unveiled at the Annual Conference was a research study conducted by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute that revealed that increases in truck weight and length would have a direct beneficial effect on the challenges facing American businesses. Specifically, the study’s findings implied that significant improvements could be achieved in fuel consumption, cost, congestion, improved distribution efficiency, and driver availability by increasing the gross vehicle weight (GVW) up to 97,000 pounds on a six-axle tractorsemitrailer from its current 80,000-pound maximum while at the same time boosting cubic capacity through the use of LCVs (specifically, two 53-ft. trailers—“turnpike doubles”). The final report, “Analysis of the Potential Benefits of Larger Trucks for U.S. Businesses Operating Private Fleets,” estimates a reduction in truck loads of 10% if the allowable weight was increased and 6% if LCV’s were permitted. If both strategies were implemented, then the estimated reduction in truck loads from the members surveyed would be 16%. Another valuable component of the NPTC value proposition is the National Driver All-Stars, a recognition program for private fleet drivers to gain national recognition based on meeting competitive high performance standards against their peer drivers throughout the country. NATIONAL PRIVATE TRUCK COUNCIL 2009 YEARBOOK These programs join our already outstanding line-up of quality resources including: • The Certified Transportation Professional program -- the only national certification program for private fleet professionals, more than 600 individuals have been certified since 1993. • The Private Fleet Management Institute (PFMI), an intense, fiveday program designed specifically for private fleet practitioners. • The NPTC National Safety Conference, an event that concentrates on the latest technology, management practices, research and regulations impacting safety professionals. • The Idealease Safety Compliance Seminars, absolutely free for members. • Driver Webcasts, co-sponsored by J.J. Keller & Associates, Inc., that focus on issues relevant to successful driver management. • The Fleet Optimization Center – a program sponsored in cooperation with C.H. Robinson Worldwide to optimize your fleet through better utilization, turning deadhead miles into new revenue and greater efficiencies. • Annual Benchmarking Survey of key private fleet operational metrics and the Standards of Fleet Excellence, Apart from specific services and programs, a critical value for NPTC regulars is the invaluable business networking culture. In sum, whatever the combination of NPTC services you choose, remember that the power of NPTC is YOU! Gary F. YOU MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN 5 NPTC Driver Hall of Fame Four truck drivers who have logged more than a combined 146 years and 13.4 million miles of safe driving were honored by the National Private Truck Council (NPTC) and inducted into the NPTC Driver Hall of Fame. The drivers are from NPTC member companies and have met the minimum qualifications of 20 years, two million miles or 50,000 hours of driving without a preventable accident. Many of the drivers have far exceeded these qualifications and are known for having made significant contributions to their industry and their communities. Since its inception, 92 drivers have been installed in the Driver Hall of Fame. Jose Amor has accumulated 3.3 million miles without an accident or citation – an impressive achievement for anybody, let alone somebody who, with the assistance of a co-worker, taught himself to drive. Although driving for “only” 36 years, Armor is proud to have worked for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service for his entire 44-year career. In Melvin F. Hobden’s 43 years behind the wheel, he has accumulated 2.7 million miles without a preventable accident. Along with that accomplishment, he has never received a citation in a personal or commercial vehicle. Hobden learned to drive with Lance’s training program, and currently drives about 50 hours a week and delivers, in his words “America’s wants and needs.” He has taken that knowledge and helped to train most of Lance’s driving team in Texas. For his entire 30-year commercial driving career, Oscar Hymons, Jr. has hauled processed meats for Gwaltney Transportation, logging more than 3.6 million miles without an accident. His runs take him up and down the East Coast, and he currently averages 2,000 miles a week. Prior to joining Gwaltney, Hymons served in the U.S. Marines, where he learned to drive behind the wheel of a 25-ton lowboy. In his 37-year career with Batesville Casket Company, Mark R. Kaiser has driven more than 3.8 million accident-free miles. Currently, he logs 2,500 miles and 55 hours a week throughout the South and Midwest delivering caskets and parts. Throughout his driving career, he has received every safety award possible at Batesville and has been named Driver of the Month for the Indiana Motor Truck Association on several occasions. 6 Jose Amor, Army & Air Force Exchange Service; Oscar Hymons, Jr.; Gwaltney Transportation, Division of Smithfield; Melvin F. Hobden, Lance, Inc.; and Mark R. Kaiser, Batesville Casket Company Dodi Reagan Humanatarian Award The National Private Truck Council (NPTC) presented Mervin Elam, a 28-year veteran driver for Batesville Casket Company, with its Dodi Reagan Humanitarian Award. The award, named in memory of the former NPTC Director of Safety Programs who died tragically in 1997, recognizes those individuals who share her extraordinary commitment to helping others. Elam, who has logged more than 3.3 million accident-free miles, received the award for his efforts with learningdisabled students and their family. In 2004, Marvin’s 22-year-old son, Dusty, was killed in a motorcycle accident. At the time, he was studying to become a special education teacher. To ensure that Dusty’s goals lived on, Mervin and his family launched the Dusty Elam Foundation, which has raised more than $110,000 to help provide resources for learning disabled students and underprivileged children, as well as their families.
