This June 11, Camp Hearne will partner with WWII re-enactors in a D-Day Remembrance of the courage,
honor and sacrifice of America’s men and women in military service during WWII. These re-enactors help
to enrich our visitors’ museum experience. Wearing the uniforms and carrying the equipment of both the
Allied and Axis forces, they share their knowledge about the day-to-day lives of military men and women
and the broader lessons of WWII.

Snapshots of D-Day
6 JUNE 1944 - 150,000 Allied troops, an armada of over 5,000 vessels,
and over ten thousand Allied aircraft are launched against the heavily
fortified Nazi-held French coastline. For many of the American assault troops
involved, this would be their baptism of fire. Places like Omaha Beach, Utah
Beach, Pointe du Hoc, and the town of Sainte-Mère-Église would become
hallowed ground for the deeds, sacrifices, and the price paid in blood by
American youth to free France from Nazi tyranny. From this National WWII
Museum collection of unique photographs, you will see the Normandy
Invasion as it unfolded, through the eyes of the men who were there. Also
included are photos of D-Day artifacts from the Museum’s collection.

A special collection of War Bond themed items will be on display in the
Barracks Visitor Center. Financing the war effort was a major concern and
buying War Bonds became everyone’s civic duty.
A few days after the invasion (D-Day +6), the 5th War Loan campaign began.
FDR started the campaign saying, “For all of the things which we use in this
war, everything we send to our fighting Allies, costs money -- a lot of money.
One sure way every man, woman and child can keep faith with those who
have given, and are giving, their lives, is to provide the money which is
needed to win the final victory. I urge all Americans to buy War Bonds
without stint. Swell the mighty chorus to bring us nearer to victory!”
The 5th War Loan campaign raised a remarkable $20.6 billion in just 27 days.
Camp Hearne, a WWII prisoner-of-war base camp located on FM 485
northwest of Hearne, Texas, is touted as the best-documented POW camp in
the US. Many folks simply do not realize almost 432,000 German, Italian, &
Japanese prisoners were housed in the US during WWII. Camp Hearne,
where more than 4800 mostly German prisoners were detained, is the
perfect historic site to tell this story. You will be able to visit our WWII POW
Camp Exhibit, walk the trails to prisoner-built remains, interact with WWII
living historians as they “show and tell” their collections, watch weapons
demonstrations and view WWII vintage vehicles. www.camphearne.com
Camp Hearne’s guard tower replica was built following a set of plans from
the period. After reviewing the complexity and feasibility, the decision was
made to build a similar structure for its visual context; that is, the tower is
the most iconic symbol of the POW camp. Primarily due to cost, this
structure is more of a visual silhouette than exact replica. Still, our tower
offers a unique view of the Camp. Structural differences are shown and each
opening’s view is explained on posted interpretive panels.

The barracks front interior depicts a soldier’s living quarters, as it would have
been during WWII. Authenticated by a set of 1942 Corps of Engineer plans
and original photographs, we are working to recreate all the features. The
next room displays the photographs, artifacts, and objects collected by Dr.
Michael Waters and ROLL CALL. These tell the story of the Camp’s origins
and a day in the life of the prisoners as well as our GIs who guarded them
from 1942-1946. The back room is our visitors’ center where guests may
relax, obtain tourist information and learn more about Camp Hearne.
This passionate group of re-enactors is dedicated to the preservation of
General Patton’s history and his command, Third Army, through living
historians of today who actively have researched every aspect of his of his
military life and those of his immediate circle.
Patton Third Army Living Historians have studied all the Battles the Third
Army fought, under what conditions, the various strategies and equipment
that was used. Over years they have acquired proper uniforms, restored the
equipment & vehicles allowing them to authentically re-create and re-enact
the period and bring history alive to audiences all over the world.
General George S. Patton stands out in the American conscious better than
any other general. As a combat general he was unequaled, fearless, brave to
a fault and keenly aware his destiny was in the hands of the Almighty.

Pegasus at War * 1941-45 is a WWII historical reenactment group
representing 1st British Airborne Div. We are based out of Houston TX.
Camp Lili is an effort to recreate a United States Army Signal Corps Company
encampment in a forward position in southern France during WW2. The unit
is based on a signal company attached to the 441st Anti-aircraft artillery
battalion, a part of "Camel Force" which invaded southern France between
Cannes and St. Raphael in August of 1944 as part of Operation Dragoon. This
area was spear headed by the 36th Infantry Division (shoulder patch of Camp
LiIi) to which the 441st was attached. Once the beach was secured the 36th
fought up the Rhone Valley to join U.S. Forces from the Normandy invasion.

The members of the 167 Volksgrenadier Division strive to
accurately reproduce the uniforms, faithfully portray the
tactics and first person histories of the soldaten of World
War II German Volksgrenadier Divisions. We demand
accuracy in the uniforms, field tactics and impressions from our membership
as well as aggressiveness in fighting. We do this in order to make the history
of World War II come alive!

Don Ling’s “My Gal” is ready for you to put on a helmet and sit behind the
wheel for a photograph. This re-built 1942 general purpose (GP) vehicle, or
“jeep,” was an essential part of World War II military.

This new group represents D-Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute
Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. These re-enactors honor their
service. During WWII, D-Company fought with their other “Brothers” in Easy
and Fox Companies made famous by the TV mini-series “Band of Brothers”
and the movie “Saving Private Ryan.”

Deutschland Regiment is a WWII reenacting unit portraying 3rd Regiment
Panzer-grenadiers under 2nd Das Reich Panzer Division. As a living history
unit, they strive for historical accuracy.
Members come from all walks of life with a deep interest in military history.
They are in NO WAY associated with any Neo-Nazi organization or subscribe
to any racist views. The majority of their members are U.S. Military Veterans
that have served our country proudly.
As a "living history" unit, they educate the public about the German soldier
through static displays and reenacted battles at sponsored public events.

Medics of the 101st and 82nd Airborne also jumped into France with their
armed counterparts. This display depicts the range of combat and medical
equipment carried by U.S. paratroopers and glider-born infantry on D-Day
and throughout the operation. Included in the display will be helmets,
uniforms, personal equipment/personal belongings, safety equipment, and
first aid/medical gear that each medic carried.

Although the Soviet Army was not engaged in the D-Day Operations, they
certainly earned their medal during WWII along the Eastern Front.

This impression is of an infantryman of the 32nd Red Banner Rifle Division
of the Workers & Peasant’s Red Army. This is an example of the Soviet
soldier during the opening stages of Operation Barbarossa in 1941. Visitors
will learn about the Red Army and the Eastern Front in general. The display
will include a PM1910 Maxim Heavy Machine Gun, several infantry rifles,
grenades and ordinance as well as different uniforms.
All activities occurring at the Hearne Airport are dependent upon the weather in Hearne as
well as the home bases of these wonderful vintage warbirds.
As with D-Day, we are hoping for that prefect window of opportunity that will allow our
planes to fly and our ground troops bivouacked at Camp Hearne to perform their art
recreating the daily life of the American GI and German soldaten.

Hearne Air Field was constructed as an auxiliary landing field for the Bryan
Air Force Base (BAFB). A Hearne Democrat newspaper article at the time
reads: “Constructed chiefly to provide a practice area for students learning
landings and take-offs, the asphaltic concrete strip of the auxiliary field
provides an alternate strip in the area should the jet runways on the Bryan
base be restricted for any reason.” BAFB and its auxiliary fields were deactivated in May 1961. BAFB was deeded to Texas A&M; Hearne Air Field
was deeded to the City of Hearne. Hearne Air Field was in active military use
for only seven years – from May 1954 to May 1961.

The Army’s version of the DC3 commercial aircraft was the C-47 Skytrain
transport and it was the workhorse of the WWII air command. It carried
personnel & cargo to every theater of war. In combat, it towed troopcarrying gliders and dropped paratroopers over their targets.
“Mr. C” is painted in D-Day military transport colors and will be supporting
the Airborne Heritage Platoon.
The Airborne Heritage Platoon is a parachute demonstration team that
specializes in military static line parachute jumps to honor US Airborne
Veterans of all eras. The team will make two parachute jumps from the C47
onto the north end of the Hearne Airport near the Camp Hearne area. They
will jump in full WWII uniforms and equipment including the iconic round
parachute. After the jumps, they we can interact with the public and answer
questions about the WWII Airborne.

The B-25J Mitchell medium range bomber was the preferred aircraft used by
Col. James “Jimmy” Doolittle for the first US strike against Japan after the
surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The San Marcos based Yellow Rose is the
same type aircraft used in the deserts of North Africa, hence her camouflage
exterior. It is fitting this warbird join our WWII Living History Event since
most POWs interned at Camp Hearne were from Rommel’s elite Afrika

The T-6 Texan is a world famous single-engine aircraft primarily know for its
use as a “pilot trainer.” During WWII, the “advance trainer”(AT-6) was used
extensively by military branches around the world as the primary fighter
trainer training thousands of pilots in the nuances of fighter tactics and
general flight. For many, their last 75 hours of training were spent in the AT6 before they graduated to the famed P-51 Mustang. www.cafcentex.com

The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang was an American long-range,
single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber used during World War II. Generally
considered the best fighter of WWII, Mustang pilots claimed 4,950 enemy
aircraft shot down. They were used as dive-bombers, bomber escorts,
ground-attackers, interceptors, for photo-recon missions, trainers,
transports (with a jump-seat), and after the war, high performance racers.
