NORTH CO MED EVAC – AKRON, CO
Living miles and miles away from the nearest medical
facility creates the need for air medical transport in life-orlimb threatening emergencies. Even if you have medical
insurance, an emergency medical flight can leave you with
unexpected out-of-pocket expenses, burdening your
finances and family.
Starting as low as $65 a year your out-of-pocket costs for
air medical transport are covered if we transport you.

The Sedgwick County Health Center is busy offering a variety of new services and planning many projects and upcoming
renovations. Here is a look at what the Health Center has done thus far in 2014, and what is in store for this community
later in the year:
*Dr. Julia Emerson joined SCHC and began her family practice early in January. She also joins Dr. Regier in
providing OB care.
*Seven Stryker beds/mattresses were purchased for the Hospital with help from Gateway Medical Foundation.
*Annual free PSA testing was held during the week of March 17th for our area men, courtesy of Jim and Carole
Kontny and Gateway Medical Foundation.
*Sleep Apnea Studies/Testing, each Thursday night (as needed), two patients at a time. Scheduling is done
through the Radiology department.
*Portable Ultrasound Unit in ER: physicians will be trained to utilize this machine to its full potential in
diagnostic areas for acute bleeding and trauma. It is also used in studies for blood clots, urinary retention, and various
other diagnostic measures.
*“Healthy Tidbits” from SCHC will be appearing weekly in the Julesburg Advocate, providing cutting edge
information in health care. Stay tuned for better health!
*SCHC’s 2014 Health Fair will feature two weeks of blood draw specials, April 14-18th and April 21st-25th, 6-9am.
Appointments taken (474-3323); walk-ins welcome! During these same two weeks, the Radiology testing will also be
offering at a reduced rate – Carotid and Aorta Screening; Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) Screening. These tests are scheduled
through the Radiology department.
*SCHC offers appointments with a variety of Specialty Doctors each month. Check the Julesburg Advocate for
the doctors currently on this service rotation. Call Ashley Marostica, RN, for additional information– 474-3323, ext. 363.
Appointments scheduled from the front desk. Specialty services offered for a continuum of care-without the travel!
*SCHC Fitness Center offers both individual and family memberships - reasonable rates and quality equipment,
with expert orientation for its use. Available 5am-9pm daily!
*Projects under consideration for 2014 include: clinic expansion; 16 slice CT scanner for the Radiology
department; pre-entrance to Hospital ER for added safety; and NH renovation.
*Fundraisers sponsored by Gateway Medical Foundation in 2014:
-March 30th – “Deadwood Resort & Gaming” Bus Trip. (Was a Success!)
-August 23rd – Ladies Luncheon & Bridge Tournament - “Green Thumbs on Parade.” Entertainment,
silent auction and lots of fun!
-October 25th – Fall Ball, “Moonlight Minions Ball”. Meal, band, bar, silent & live auctions. Lots of
contests, prizes and surprises!
These events raise money for the projects mentioned above. Monies are used as “match or seed” when applying to
major foundations for grants.
It shows our community’s support for these projects. Please plan to attend if you are
able!

The Library has just completed an exciting year. In 2013, we hosted two book signings for the public to meet
and visit with four area authors. Our summer reading program for children pre-school through 3rd grade was
well attended and we appreciate the readers who shared their time. A large book sale in the fall provided an
opportunity for the public to find treasures for their own libraries.
We will be having the summer reading program for the children in pre-school through 3rd grade again
beginning in June. Sessions are held on Thursday mornings. More information will be in the Julesburg
Advocate and posted in businesses once final plans are made.
REMINDER: We are able to order books from other libraries if we do not have them available locally.
However, these books must be returned within a short time so they can be shared with other libraries. If the
books are not picked up from our library within the week after a patron is notified of availability, they will be
returned to the lending library.
In late 2013 we received a State Grant to help us provide more materials for our patrons. Some new books in
the children’s section have been received. Others are being considered for the junior and adult sections,
including audio books. Check out our services and get to know your library.
