Oxford Street, Epping facing north in 1907 With retailing flat, the last thing that shopkeepers needed in Oxford Street, Epping for the past six months was the double whammy of having their street dug up and parking severely limited while Hornsby Council completed its beautification program. Nonetheless, the project is now complete and was officially launched on October 21, some six weeks ahead of schedule. Where the street has come from with its stylish pavers, alfresco dining areas and tree plantings can be seen from the photo taken in 1907 showing the few shops and dirt road to North Epping. While during the construction period a few businesses closed down, those stoics who have remained are positive about the result and report that people are slowly returning. They do however have reservations as to whether the $3.5 million spent on the project, not including the losses they have sustained at their counters, can be FURNITURE & DECORATING MAKEOVER DIRECT factory door Christies Design Framing Pty Ltd NOW AT 23/10 Pioneer Ave THORNLEIGH Ph: 9875 1698 USE OUR DESIGN & DECORATING EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE REPAIRS & UPHOLSTERY FOR YOUR ESSENTIAL & SENTIMENTAL PIECES OF FURNITURE C.B. Sir, A disturbing pattern seems to be occurring in Hornsby Shire planning DAs. - the rise of the “Green Offset”. The council’s policy is very good but it is the implementation that is questionable. The policy can be found by searching for “Green Offsets” on the council’s website. The code states 1.5 When does the Offsets Code apply? The Offsets Code applies when: • A development is expected to impact native vegetation. • Council assesses alternative proposals on their merits and decides that if an applicant addresses the principles of the code and demonstrates significant net gains for the native vegetation of the Hornsby Local Government Area, offsetting may be used. 1.6 When does the Offsets Code not apply? An offsetting action shall not be allowed by Council if: • The applicant has not adequately demonstrated to Council’s satisfaction that all measures have been taken to avoid impact through consideration of alternative locations and designs. • The applicant has not adequately demonstrated to Council’s satisfaction that all measures have been taken to minimise impact through consideration of additional or alternative amelioration or mitigation measures. Recently several established areas of Blue Gum High Forest have been “Offset” for relatively small sums of $10,000 or $20,000. This has been done to allow dubious sub divisions or the construction of very large houses. $20,000 is a very small price to pay when the resulting development’s value can be enhanced in excess of $100,000. Is this a “Green Offset” or a “Greed Offset”? Does this matter? One established Blue Gum will be replaced with as many as 4 saplings at another location. If this process is continued offending vegetation will be removed from building plots and replaced in already vegetated reserves, therefore changing the balance of the built and the natural environment. This policy could change the character and quality of our suburbs forever. conflict with Human Rights. The truth is that even this committee has not started work yet and it was an empty promise. Unlike previous meetings when this matter has been raised, only a handful of residents were present. Two spoke for the present system and one against. The two dissenting councillors were Clrs. Mills and Berman and both believed that the matter should be deferred to enable further community consultation. “It was a lack of communication with the public that created this mess in the first place,” Mayor Nick Berman told The Chronicle “and I believe there is still a significant amount of community opposition to the current situation,” he added. Clr. Mills had moved a Foreshadowed Motion for Deferral to allow for a Public Meeting regarding County Drive but this was lost when the decision to proceed with the officers’ recommendation was taken. The Council agreed that the proposed alternate cycleway proposal along David and Purchase Roads should be sent to the Local Traffic Committee for detailed evaluation, consultation and a recommendation. It was also resolved to pursue a number of changes with the Local Traffic Committee, these were: • The removal of parking in peak hours and line marking to provide two turn lanes in Woodgrove Avenue on the approach to County Drive • The removal of parking on the southern side of John Road between County Drive and Ashford Road in peak hours and a review of the parking lane in County Drive near John Road • The provision of an exclusive left turn lane in KITCHEN CLOSING CAR FLIPS EVERYTHING TO MAKE ANY OCCASION SUCCESSFUL Sue’s Kitchen which has operated for 15 years at St. Albans Church Hall in Pembroke Street, Epping will close with its Christmas Lunch from 12 noon on Monday, December 6. A Council survey of over 750 residents conducted at a number of venues and events during September and October found that approximately 76 percent of Hornsby residents are prepared to pay slightly higher rates in exchange for improved local facilities. The survey found that the facilities residents wanted to see more of, in order of priority, were: amenities at local parks / ovals, including lighting, parking and drainage; footpaths; the replacement of Hornsby Aquatic Centre and the replacement of Hornsby pedestrian overbridge. In October, Hornsby Shire Council resolved to apply to IPART for approval to charge additional rates to fund additional services and facilities. Council has also resolved to undertake a review of its internal and external services to find major cost savings. “Our prudent financial management has enabled us to maintain day-to-day services but we are constrained in our ability to fund the expansion of new services and infrastructure,” said Council’s General Manager, Robert Ball. “The survey has given us a good indication of residents’ priorities,” Mr Ball said. “We now want the community to tell us how much they would be prepared to pay for these improved facilities and how the rate should be applied.” Community meetings have been held in the last week at Hornsby RSL and the Galston Club to further consult with Multi Award Winning Butcher Top quality meat & service at the right price ORDER NOW FOR CHRISTMAS • Limited Bangalow Sweet Pork Hams • Free range Turkeys 15 Redleaf Avenue Wahroonga NSW 2076 Phone (02) 9489 2769 Shop 2, 496 North Rocks Road Carlingford North NSW 2118 Phone (02) 9871 1157 www.webstersmeats.com.au Mon to Fri 7am – 6pm Sat 6am – 1.30pm WE WISH EVERYONE A MERRY CHRISTMAS & A HAPPY NEW YEAR We will be closed from Thursday, December 23. reopening on Tuesday, January 17, With great prices on Kitchen & Bathroom Renovations KRYSTYNA J. The organising committee led by Cherrybrook resident, Jeanne Hope included a number of “survivors”, including Jeanne herself and a number of parents from Pennant Hills Public School (PHPS) who have also had experiences with breast cancer. The hall decoration and the attire of many of those attending reflected the pink theme. Jeanne is a music teacher and conductor at PHPS and she drew together a trad jazz sextet of professionals who donated their time to this very worthy cause. They opened the evening with gusto, playing some classic jazz numbers. Pennant Hills Public School’s Stage Band with their conductor Ms. Jeanne Hope The PHPS Stage Band, conducted by Jeanne Hope, provided an inspiring selection of melodies and, considering that none of the musicians was over 11 years old, they displayed a remarkable maturity in their presentation. Nearly 300 people attended the evening while many were turned away due to hall capacity. Over $5,500 was collected for the BCNA appeal including a silent auction generously supported with prizes from many local sponsors. Christmas is when the new year begins for me – forget January 1. There are so many new scams out there. Please, if someone rings you purporting to be from an online computer company, just tell them you are not interested at all and have an excellent technician and just hang up. Or tell them that you are aware of the scam and know that the federal police are investigating them. These people ring random numbers so you could have a silent number or be on a no-call list and you may still get a call from them. They are not looking after your best interests at all, quite the opposite. Talking about infections – they can come from many sources. Once they came in attachments so if you didn’t open the attachment you didn’t get the infection. Then they came in the email itself so once the email was delivered to your machine, you were infected. Now – well, go to any website and they may be waiting, a flash drive can be infected etc. anything that can load onto your computer can carry an infection. Even if you have excellent protection, be aware that there are at a conservative estimate, 40,000 new infections every day. The internet security companies have to be aware of them and find a cure and then send you an update, so make sure you have automatic updates running. And if you think your computer is behaving differently, then ring a technician. This is why it is important to have good protection all the time. I have been recommending AVG for many years but there seems to be a problem with AVG 2011 free interfering with Outlook. If you are having a problem and AVG has not solved it for you, then download Avast – it has a free version which is excellent. It is available at avast.com. Another warning – I seem to be full of them this month – if you google for a website, be careful you have the genuine one – there are a few imposters out there. If you want to keep your computing free of problems: 1. Have excellent internet security software 2. Backup to an external hard drive 3. Run a disc clean and a defrag every month 4.Check the inside of your computer for dust – particularly the CPU fan 5.When a thunderstorm is approaching, not only shut down your computer, but take the plug out of the power point. 6.Have a service check of your computer every 12 months – you do it for your car, don’t you? Possibly next time you see us we will be wearing t-shirts with our very own logo from our good friends Heather and Arthur at Print2Day at Thornleigh – have recently moved over the road if you can’t find them where they were. Offices are located all over Australia, local ones being Pymble, Northern Beaches and Gladesville Now a new office in Thornleigh has opened servicing Hornsby Shire and the Hills District. The Director of the new operation is Sue McGarry, who trained as a Registered Nurse (RN) in both Britain and USA before pursuing a career in sales and marketing management within the Healthcare industry. “I wanted to own a business where I could use my background and skills and really make a difference,” Sue said. The opportunity arose when Sue learnt that Home Instead Senior Care was seeking to open its 14th Australian office in the local area offering companionship and nonmedical home care support for older people. “I was really impressed with their commitment and the services Home Instead Senior Care provides. Many people are unaware that they can access care in their own homes and I look forward to raising awareness of Home Instead’s services in the local area,” Sue explained. Home Instead Senior Care provides services for just a few hours a day up to 24 hours, seven days a week including weekends and public holidays. “For seniors, it’s not just the house; it’s the local neighbours, the local grocery store, the church and community that give them identity and comfort,” she said. Scientists have developed a 3mm x 3mm microchip incorporating one thousand five hundred light sensitive receptors. The microchip is then implanted within the retina through complicated and delicate surgery. The photoreceptive pixels then stimulate the optic nerve via electrodes. Although the trial has been small, the results have been impressive. In all three of the participants, a sense of rudimentary vision was achieved within a few days of implanting. They were able to perceive shapes and individual objects. One participant was even able to read large words and appreciate the difference between several shades of grey. This has been a breakthrough in medical research. It has shown that the optic nerve can be reawakened after many years of inactivity. In its current form, the implanting of the microchip is likely to be a very costly and labour intensive procedure. A German company is hoping to have the microchip available to the public within five years. She came to Sydney and was a nursemaid for an army officer and later worked in the home of Sir Henry Parkes. The family holds that it was on advice from Parkes that she purchased a selection of 60 acres at Berowra while managing a boarding house in the city. After her marriage to blacksmith Nathaniel John Wall in 1851, Mary would spend one day a week on the property, walking from the city to Berowra and back. By the late 1880’s Mary, Nat and their seven children spent more time at the property and thus began the family’s long association with the local area. Don Wall’s dad, William (born in Dural in 1888) was a labourer working with horses in his early years. He then became chauffeur to Marcus Clark driving the first car in the district. Their new minister, the Rev. Dr Mark Hillis, was inducted on November 20 at a service conducted by the Sydney North Presbytery of the Uniting Church Synod, and attended by representatives from the community, from other local churches, as well as members and friends. Mark Hillis has 35 years experience in ministry. He has been a parish minister in Orange, Tweed Heads, and Toronto. He has taught Religious Education in Papua New Guinea and served as Regional Education Officer for the Board of Education. For the last 5 years he has been the National Director of Christian Education for the National Assembly. “Mark is a person of deep and sincere faith, with wide experience of the church, and excellent skills in education, listening and group leadership,” a FROM THE TRUST Quick quiz: which is more believable? : (i)Widening the M2 to six lanes will increase average car speeds by 40km/ h, as Transurban forecasts; (ii) Santa Claus is alive and well. Correct: Santa by a mile! Independent expert, Dr John Goldberg, predicts that the $550-million upgrade will be lucky to lift average speeds by 10 km/h. If he’s right, add this to the sorry litany of outlandishly optimistic predictions by tollway operators that have led to one financial collapse after another. Not that Transurban is in danger: it has a lucrative captive market – and a 20 year monopoly to boot. We have a right to know if this upgrade sets in train a new 20 year monopoly. Dr Goldberg, former principal scientist with CSIRO, who gave his analysis in a peer-reviewed paper in Canberra last month, has a knack for being correct about toll roads. He predicted well in advance the financial collapse of the Cross City and Lane Cove tunnels. As for the average speed increase on the six-lane M2, “It would be a breakeven proposition to get more than 10 km/h,” he told the SMH. Transurban’s estimate of a 40 km/h average speed increase is, he said, “wildly church spokesperson said. He holds degrees in Arts (UNSW) and Divinity (Sydney), a Graduate Diploma in Religious Education (Brisbane CAE), and a Master of Education and Doctor of Philosophy from Newcastle University. Indeed, NSW government figures show that the widening will pour an extra 2.3 million cars a year on to the M2, causing ‘extremely congested’ traffic flow between Beecroft Rd. and Christie Rd. On top of this, greedy Transurban will slug our lucky drivers an extra 8 per cent in tolls (RTAapproved), and residents will cop a surge in exhaust fumes! But wait: it gets worse: the operator will demolish the vital Kirkham St. – Murray Farm Rd bridge over the M2 and not start replacing it for two years, when the upgrade is complete. And this is OUR land! Many hundreds of very angry residents, including children, will have to take very long detours to get to Beecroft schools, shops and trains. And now, Transurban has vetoed its decision to install noise barriers, claiming they are unnecessary: how contemptuous of residents! Meanwhile the crazy 8 km tunnel plan from the M2 to the F3 under Pennant Hills is still on the agenda. In Northern New South Wales, the city of Grafton has an annual Jacaranda Festival which takes place at the end of October. The program has included a party to select a princess, a flower girl and a page boy; a jacaranda ball and crowning of the various jacaranda queens; awards for the festival’s best garden; most beautiful baby and a parade of youth - not to mention floral windows, a pet show and horse racing. When the jacaranda’s flowers fall on grass they form a carpet of vivid blue, reminding me of bluebells - flowers of the northern hemisphere - which bloom in masses when the spring arrives. The shade of blue is almost that of the jacaranda. If you can’t get to England, a country renowned for its bluebells, then they can be seen at this time of the year in some of the Blue Mountains’ show gardens. I’ve often wondered which offers the most astonishing display: bluebells or jacarandas? I think now it’s the latter. After all, the jacaranda flowers can be admired twice: once while on the tree and, once again, having fallen, when they cover the ground. Mr Wing welcomed parents and guests who joined with the school community for this special occasion. Among the guests were Hills Network School Education Director, Mrs Janet Wasson; NSW SES Cadet Program State Coordinator, Mr Todd Burns; NSW SES Sydney Northern Region Controller, Mr David Chambers; and the cadets’ three trainers from Hornsby Unit, Mr Bob Corbett, Mrs Kathryn Hine and Mrs Lee Lowe. This group of 16 young people spent 10 weeks studying a diverse range of topics, including the roles and responsibilities of emergency services, occupational health and safety, teamwork and radio communications. Class sessions were punctuated with visits to local emergency service facilities and a two-day camp where cadets were provided with hands-on experience in many of the Hills Road. This year, the store’s window displays feature elegant wreaths, silver candelabra, ceramic fruits and table decor on one side and on the other, traditional wooden ‘toy town’ figurines, houses and musical instruments. The staff is on hand to offer friendly advice and help you theme a unique Christmas statement with decorations sourced from all over the world. As well, you’ll find an exciting range of gift ideas from Fitz & Floyd, skills used by SES volunteers in the field. The program culminated in an exercise during which cadets were assessed on their knowledge base and their practical application of teamwork, communication and safety aspects of the course. ‘The manner in which these cadets have embraced the ideals of volunteering, community service and teamwork is a credit to themselves, their families and their school,’ said lead trainer, Mrs Lee Lowe. What do you get if you combine (among other things) 30 dozen eggs, 20 kilos of sultanas, 6 bottles of brandy, 20 kilos of butter with over 90 women of all ages? A great community event! On Saturday, November 20 the Women’s Ministry team at St Mark’s Anglican Church Pennant Hills hosted a Christmas Pudding making event that has become a local tradition attracting women from across the generations and across the local area. The women watched a demonstration by prizewinning cake maker Madeline Sinclair and then it was time for them to mix, beat and shape on their own. St Mark’s new pastor Craig Schafer said, “It’s been fantastic to see this event grow each year and to see the range of local women who get involved. The Women’s Ministry Team did a fantastic job and lots of local women have found it a great introduction to St Mark’s and also to who Jesus really is and the difference He makes. Christmas is fast approaching again. In my line of work I hear a lot of opinions about Christmas, from the commercialism of the sacred; to the irrelevance and insensitivity of such a religious event in a secular and pluralistic nation; and then from Christians that “Jesus is the reason for the season.” At first, this sounds good and right. But is it? Think about what Christmas actually means. Does it not tell us that God values us so much that he was prepared to send his only Son, Jesus, into the world wrapped in human skin to be our saviour because we clearly cannot save ourselves? So, what’s my point? The point is you and I are the reason for the season. Jesus is the answer to our need, but humanity is the reason Jesus came – because of God’s intense, intimate love for us he was prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf. So next time you hear a Christmas carol, or see some decorations, or put presents under the tree – remember that you are the reason for the season. You are so special to God, the creator of the universe, that he gave up his son for you. Talk about a special gift! What will you do with God’s gift of Jesus to you this Christmas? My suggestion is that you accept it, unwrap it, and start getting to know the sheer wonder, the joy, the love, the hope and the peace that comes with the gift of knowing Jesus Christ. I wish you and your family a truly special Christmas. If you have nowhere else to go on Christmas Day and you want to connect with God, you are welcome at our church at 8am or 9:30am. You would be our special guest, because you are the reason for the season. Monthly Chronicle, November/December 2010 — 19 FLIGHT OF THEIR LIVES! Over 300 special children took the ride of their lives on Saturday, November 13 when The Rotary Club of Turramurra and Qantas Jumbo Joy Flight made a unique 90 minute flight over Sydney and its surrounds. The children, aged from 4 to 18 years are all physically or intellectually disabled, suffer from lifethreatening illnesses or come from backgrounds where holidays are not on the agenda. Nine months preparation by dozens of volunteers made the flight possible. Even the Qantas aircraft crew volunteers its time for the day. Remarkably, The Rotary Club of Turramurra has been able to provide this wonderful event for 37 years assisted by organisations such as Qantas, Qantas Pathfinders, Shell and McDonalds. “Many of the children were taking the first flight of their lives and this creates an atmosphere that is hard to describe,” said Roger Norman, PR Director of The Rotary Club of Turramurra. “The smiles, laughter and excitement generated on the day made it a pretty marvellous experience for everyone.” The children are nominated from various children’s charities such as Barnardos, Camp Breakaway, Ermington Family Learning Centre, Giant Steps, Heart Kids, Vision Australia, Royal Far West Children, Shepherd Centre, Stewart House, Taldumande Youth Services, The Spastic Centre, Uniting Care Burnside and several special schools.
