Kinney Natatorium features a 50-meter by 25-yard Olympic class pool,
which accomodates four varsity programs — men’s and women’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s water polo — while enhancing
the recreational aquatics opportunities for the Bucknell community. The
pool itself features two moveable bulkheads, allowing for multiple team
practices and recreational swimming to occur.
Natatorium amenities include seating for 500 spectators, restrooms,
separated varsity and visiting team locker rooms, a poolside classroom, sauna, steam room and concession stands.
Already Kinney Natatorium has played host to several major events, most notably the 2005 NCAA Men’s Water Polo
Championship. The facility, which has been open since 2003, has also served as host of five Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships, the 2004 Eastern Women’s Water Polo Championship and an exhibition game against the U.S. women’s
water polo national team, drawing rave reviews at each. Beginning in the spring of 2005, the Pennsylvania state swimming
championships moved to Kinney Natatorium. In the fall of 2010 the CWPA Men’s Water Polo Eastern Championship took
place inside the gorgeous facility.

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the
playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly
at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s
student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all
Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates
twice, and in the most recent survey in the fall of 2011, Bucknell ranked
No. 4 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 127 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference
in 1990-91.

A total of 392 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2011-12 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their
sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 266 made
the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring 2012 semester.

A NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL
Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model.
At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and
residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic
pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place.
FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell
in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences
available to students generally.
SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration,
staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including
practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is
to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena.
ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka
Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab
can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice.
LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips.
STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete
experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing
feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program
involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving
as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body.
BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. As part of a Patriot League-wide
leadership initiative, this program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance
their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

2012 Season Preview
It is year two of the John McBride era at Bucknell and the Bison’s intense
head coach con nues to expect a win in every game. While the former SWAT
officer knows an undefeated season is not likely, he s ll pushes his team
to strive for perfec on. This is best shown by his response when asked if
a 5-2 record over the season’s final seven games in 2011 will help propel
the squad to more success in 2012. He responded, “We look at it as a lack
of success. While most teams would be happy going 5-2, we were disappointed. We had a good season, but it wasn’t good enough. Every season
we don’t win an Eastern Championship is a disappointment, especially with
the effort we put forth.”
Bucknell posted a solid 15-10 record last fall against a schedule that was
li ered with 11 na onally ranked foes. The Bison finished fi h at the Eastern
Championship, their eighth consecu ve top-five finish at the year-ending
event, and registered their fi h above-.500 record in the last six years.
Five seniors have departed the team since last year, but only one was
a regular starter, meaning McBride has high hopes for this year’s edi on.
Senior captains Brian Barron and Ma Napleton have the highest expecta ons placed on them by McBride.
“Both Brian and Ma understand that this is it and in three-and-onehalf months it is all going to be over,” commented McBride about the
only two members of the senior class. “We expect them to lead us to a
championship this year. They have shown they care and have go en their
teammates on board. They not only do it with their mouth, but they do it
with their ac ons in the pool. They can hold others accountable because
they are working hard. They are being leaders in the pool without having
to open their mouths.”
Barron’s 81 games played and 51 starts in his career are both by far the
most among current Bison. He was second on the team in scoring with a
career-high 44 goals last year, bringing his career figure to within six of
the century mark. A CWPA Southern Division First Team selec on and a
member of the All-Eastern Championship Second Team, Barron tallied at
least one point in each of his 21 games played in 2011.
Napleton took over the star ng goalie posi on for the first me last year
and excelled. He notched a career-high 229 saves in nearly 750 minutes of
playing me. A five- me CWPA Southern Division Defensive Player of the
Week, Napleton joined Barron on the conference’s All-Southern Division
First Team at the conclusion of the campaign.
“Ma is playing with more confidence this year,” stated McBride. “He
knows what my expecta ons are of him
as a goalie. Un l last year, I don’t think

he ever felt the kind of pressue I put
on a goalie and he now accepts that. In
my opinion the goalie is more than 50
percent of the team’s success.”
While Barron and Napleton will lead
the Bison, a large and talented sevenperson junior class may very well decide
the ul mate success of the team.
“We are fortunate we started out
so young last year and all the current
juniors received so much playing me,”
men oned McBride. “They have a year
in my system and know where I am coming from. The next two years with that
class are going to be really good and as
we con nue to bring in strong recrui ng
classes, we expect to be stacked each
year. It will be a revolving door.”
Alex Nowlin made one of the biggest
splashes among the current juniors
last year when he led the team in scoring with 88 points. His team-high 62
assists ed for 10th on the program’s
single-season list as he became the first Bison to join that ledger in more
than a decade.
“Obviously, passing is crucial to being a good teammate, but I would like
to see Alex take some more opportuni es to shoot the ball,” said McBride,
who also coaches the Bison women’s water polo team. “He was more of a
pass first, shoot second player and it has to be the other way.”
While Nowlin led the team in points, one half of a talented center combina on paced the squad in goals as Jack Else notched 49 goals a year ago,
more than doubling his freshman-year total of 21. The only member of the
Bison to start every game and a CWPA Southern Division Second Team pick,
Else split me at center with classmate Mike Kimble. Kimble registered 24
goals and drew at least one ejec on in 21 of 25 ou ngs.
“We actually have four centers this year,” said a smiling McBride. “In
addi on to Jack and Mike we have freshmen Andrew Roberts and Jedd
Thayer. Our whole offense revolves around our centers. We will keep rotating centers in and keeping them fresh. The other teams may only have one
or two center defenders and they are going to get red.”
Bucknell has a very solid center defender who is also a junior, but who
was not with the team last year. Uros Markovic played in a handful of games
as a freshman in 2010, but decided not to play last year. He returned during
the preseason and has impressed McBride.
“Uros came back this year and I think he will be our star ng center
defender,” remarked McBride. “He said last year that it was too hard, but
this year he came in with a different understanding and has accepted it.”
Another junior, Andrew Somers, will also see me at center defender
along with Markovic. Somers is a veteran of 25 career games, including 21
last year. He has five goals, six assists and 10 steals during his Bison tenure.
Junior Julian Colina will add some firepower on the offensive end of the
pool. He had a breakout year in 2011 and ranked third on the squad with
a career-high 35 goals. He also dished out 24 assists, giving him 59 points,
the third-highest total on the team.
“Julian is Julian. We just plug him into the right posi on and he is produc ve,” praised McBride. “With (freshman) Stefan (Aleksic) here we might
have to adjust his posi on in six-on-five situa ons and that might affect his
goal produc on a li le bit, but we will have a nice one-two punch at the
top with him and Stefan.”
The final member of the junior class is Stephen Norton. McBride envisions him, as well as his sophomore
brother, Greg, con nuing to fill a reserve
role. Sophomore Ken Wa ana and classmate Keegan Williams, a backup goalie,
will also con nue to come off the bench
and provide valuable minutes.
McBride has seen plenty of promise
in his six-person freshman class early in
preseason prac ce. In addi on to Aleksic, Roberts and Thayer, Nick Hale, Max
McKelvy and Max Wilder have joined
the squad as first-year players.
There is a significant rule change in
2012 that will impact some of McBride’s
philosophy. Last year he focused on developing a great counter a ack, but the
length of the pool has been shortended
from 30 meters to 25 meters, meaning
the counter a ack will not be as large a
part of the game. McBride has shi ed
the focus to the frontcourt offense to
combat the lost five meters.
“Teams that may have been a li le
slower than us will now be equal to us,”
predicted McBride when discussing the
shorter playing area. “We are not swimming in prac ce as much because of it.”

d as an assistant coach at Brown the previous seven years, was named the head men’s and women’s water polo coach at Bucknell on May 18, 2011. McBride, a 1992 graduate of Rhode Island who was a
four-year starter in goal as a member of the water polo program, also has an
extensive background with the U.S. Na onal Team, serving as head coach of the
men’s Northeast Zone Olympic Development Team since 2009.
In his first year at Bucknell, McBride helped the Bison men post their fi h
above-.500 record in the last six years as he guided them to a 15-10 record and
their eighth consecu ve top-five finish at the Eastern Championship. The Bucknell women also won 15 games under McBride as the squad faced a challenging
schedule that included 14 ranked opponents.
While at Brown, McBride helped guide the Bears to unprecedented success.
The men’s squad captured the 2009 Collegiate Water Polo Associa on Northern Division tle, its first conference crown in nearly 25 years. Addi onally, the
team went undefeated in regular-season conference play in 2008 and finished
as high as fourth at the Eastern Championship.
On the women’s side, McBride led the Bears to back-to-back ECAC Championship tles in 2009 and 2010 and a fourth-place finish at the Eastern Championship, the best showing at Brown since 2001.
Both the men’s and women’s squads appeared regularly in the na onal top20 rankings during McBride’s tenure, which also featured 43 All-Northern Division selec ons and 22 All-East players. Addi onally, three Bears earned CoSIDA
Academic All-America honors.
Brown’s men’s team had the highest team grade-point average in the na on
for four years, while the women ranked in the top three na onally four mes.
“I am very excited to have been given the opportunity to be the head coach
of the men’s and women’s water polo programs at Bucknell,” said McBride at
the me of his hiring. “I am looking forward to se ling into Lewisburg and getng started with the 2011-12 seasons. Bucknell prides itself on balancing academics and athle cs and having coached in a very rigorous academic environment for the last seven years should make the transi on much easier. I am very
anxious to get on the pool deck and begin coaching the talented student-athletes that are member of both the men’s and women’s programs at Bucknell.”
A goalie on the U.S. Na onal “B” Team in 1993, McBride has become a recognizable face in Na onal Team circles. In addi on to his du es as the men’s
Northeast Zone Olympic Development Team head coach, he has served as head

McBride was a three- me First Team All-New England selec on and was
twice a First Team All-East honoree.
Following his gradua on from Rhode Island with a degree in speech communica ons, McBride a ended the Rhode Island Department of Correc ons
Academy and the Donald W. Wya Deten on Facility Correc ons Academy
and eventually graduated from the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy
in 1996. He then served as a patrolman and SWAT officer for the North Providence Police from 1996 to 2004.
McBride got his start in coaching in 2001 when he founded the Newport
Lady Tritons Water Polo Club. He proceeded to coach the club, which was
made up of high school-aged players, un l 2003. At that me, McBride founded the Ocean State Masters Swim Team, which featured more than 100 athletes who competed in master’s swim meets and triathlons all over the world.
McBride’s most recent start-up project was the Bruno Water Polo Club,
which he began as a non-profit organiza on in Providence, R.I., in 2007. The
club gives inner-city youth an opportunity to enjoy the sport of water polo.

Kyle Gorham brings plenty of experience to the Bucknell men’s and
women’s water polo coaching staff. The California na ve is in his first year
in Lewisburg a er five years as an assistant at Long Beach State.
While with the 49ers, Gorham assisted with both the men’s and women’s programs. He was also the head coach of the Adult Masters Swim Program, while also serving as an assistant coach with the Coastal California
Zone Boys Water Polo Team.
Prior to his me at Long Beach State, Gorham served on the coaching
water polo and swimming staffs at Corona Del Mar High School, Sonora
High School and Brea Olinda High School.
Gorham graduated from Brea Olinda High School in 2000, earned an
associates degree from Orange Coast College in 2008 and a bachelor’s degree from Long Beach State in 2012.

The strength & condi oning program at Bucknell received a major
boost in 2003 with the comple on of the sparkling 15,000-square-foot
Krebs Family Fitness Center and Berger Family Weight Room, as well as
the hiring of Jerry Shreck as the first full- me strength & condi oning coordinator.
A 1996 graduate of East Stroudsburg University with a degree in movement studies and exercise science, Shreck is charged with detailed daily
strength and condi oning rou nes for each of Bucknell’s athle c programs.
The general philosophy of the Bison strength program is year-round periodiza on with a high-intensity base, supplemented with func onal and
sport-specific training. Training programs for most teams employ explosion
techniques with power bands and plyometrics.
The ul mate goal of the strength and condi oning program is the preven on of injuries and training athletes to their peak physical condi on.
A na ve of nearby Montgomery, Pa., Shreck had served as the athle c
trainer for the Bucknell men’s basketball team for three seasons prior to
his appointment as strength and condi oning coordinator. He is a member
of the Na onal Strength and Condi oning Associa on and the Na onal
Council of Strength and Fitness.

presented annually to “the individual who contributes
the most to Bucknell water polo.” 2011 Bucknell graduate Richie Hyden was the most recent recipient of the
pres gious award.
An All-East water polo selec on four straight years
(1977-1980), Schulte led Bucknell to four Eastern championships, and set an all- me NCAA water polo career
scoring record with 586 goals.
The high scorer in four straight NCAA Tournaments
(the only player to accomplish this feat) and holder of
the career record of 50 goals in NCAA championships,
Schulte played on Bucknell teams that had a combined record of 114-15-3, and
he was a Second Team AllAmerican in 1979 and 1980.
He was the only player outside
of California selected to those
All-America squads.
He was twice selected
to the AAU All-America First
Team in water polo, and seven
mes in his career finished in
the top six of an East Coast
Conference Swimming Championship event. He won Bucknell’s Christy Mathewson
Award, which recognizes the

The Collegiate Water Polo Associa on announced that former Bucknell men’s
water polo and swimming coach Dick Russell, along with Richard Hunkler of Slippery
Rock, would compose the ini al class inducted into the CWPA Hall of Fame in 2002.
Both Russell and Hunkler laid the founda on for the organiza on that exists today and
were instrumental in its development for almost 20 years.
Russell served Bucknell as an associate professor of physical educa on and developed a local swim class program. It was
there he founded a water polo club in 1968,
which con nued un l 1977, when the team
achieved varsity status. Between 1977 and
1986, Russell’s water polo teams tallied an
amazing record of 223-68-4. This consistent success made Russell the first coach
in Bucknell history to record more than
100 victories in two sports, swimming and
water polo. Under Russell the water polo
teams won four Eastern Championships and
competed in the NCAA Championship five
mes. He was named Eastern Water Polo
Coach of the Year in 1985.
Although it seemed minor at the me,
one of his biggest achievements has had a
tremendous impact on the sport throughout the country. Russell was the founder of
the Mid-Atlan c Conference, now known as
the Collegiate Water Polo Associa on. Originally including only a few teams, his pioneer
work in establishing this league laid the founda on for the na onwide conference that
boasts over 220 teams today.
In 1968, Russell began his tenure at Bucknell as head swim coach and served in that
capacity un l his re rement in 1994. While at the helm, he led the men’s swim program
to a 154-121 record in dual meets, along with 11 conference championships. He was
also named a Master Coach by the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Associa on in 1978.
Russell began his coaching career
at Upper Arlington High School in Columbus, Ohio, amassing an 85-14 dual
meet record before being named head
swimming and golf coach, as well as a
football assistant at Kenyon College in
Gambier, Ohio. While at Kenyon, Coach
Russell won 33 of 52 dual meets and four
Ohio Athle c Conference Championships
in his years as coach.
Russell was inducted into the Bucknell University Athle cs Hall of Fame in
1997 and was presented with a plaque
commemorating his contributions to
the Bison water polo and swimming
programs in January 2007.
Russell passed away in April of 2008
at the age of 75.
In the summer of 2009, it was announced that Dan ’78 and Chris (Peterjohn ’76) Richards had pledged $1.5 million to the Bucknell men’s and women’s
water polo programs in honor of Dick Russell. For more informa on on the Russell

founded by Dick Russell (Bucknell University swimming & water polo coach) in the 1970’s.
Its founding membership included teams from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and
New York.
The leadership and management of the organiza on relied on volunteer coaches un l
1990, when it hired a commissioner to perform basic scheduling for the 15 member teams.
Officia ng assignments at the me were performed by an independent organiza on called
the Eastern Water Polo Referees Associa on.
The next major milepost occurred in 1993, when the Southern and New England Conferences merged into the Mid Atlan c. The new structure combined all of the varsity teams
in the East, along with the few sport clubs in existence at that me.
During the 1995 season, the conference received its first major
challenge, as the organiza on experienced a strike by its officia ng
corps. This strike ul mately resulted in
the organiza on establishing its own officia ng bureau, assuming responsibility for all of its officia ng assignments.
The conference hired Tere Ma as its
inaugural Director of Officials and Loren Bertocci as its first Technical Director. These two individuals laid the
groundwork for the Officia ng Bureau that exists today.
Today the CWPA is the largest water polo conference in the country with teams in 75%
of the states na onwide. Including both intercollegiate varsity compe on and club compe on, it stands as the only conference of this type. Due to its breadth and influence, the
conference plays a pivotal role in the sport of water polo today, which will only increase in
the future as it con nues to grow.
MATCHING GIFT CHALLENGE
Dan ‘78 and Chris (Peterjohn ‘76) Richards have created a matching challenge program for friends, fans and alumni of Bucknell water polo and swimming and diving
to help increase long-term support for these varsity sports and honor former Bison coach Dick Russell.
Up to a limit of $250,000, the Richards will accelerate payment of their mul -year $1.5 million pledge to the new “Russell Endowment” by matching qualifying gi s
and pledges made by others, as follows:

2. at least $5,000 to an endowment fund named to honor Coach Dick Russell in support of the water polo and/or swimming and diving programs,

BOLSTER MEN’S AND WOMEN’S WATER POLO
PROGRAMS
The men’s and women’s water polo programs at Bucknell University will be
greatly bolstered thanks to a $1.5 million commitment made by Dan ‘78 and Chris
(Peterjohn ‘76) Richards in the summer of 2009. The pledge was made in honor of
Coach Dick Russell, who was at the helm of the swimming and diving programs from
1968 to 1994 and created the water polo program at Bucknell, coaching the men’s
team from its incep on as a varsity sport in 1977 un l 1986. Mr. and Mrs. Richards
were swimmers under Coach Russell during their years at Bucknell.
As the Richards’ mul -year pledge is paid, an endowment will be built that generates funds to enhance Bucknell’s men’s and women’s varsity water polo programs
by increasing and stabilizing the resources available for the coaches, staff and student-athletes. The Russell Endowment will provide a las ng memorial honoring the
life me contribu ons of the late Hall of Fame mentor to Bucknell’s varsity water
polo and swimming and diving programs. It will complement a similar endowment
established for the swimming and diving programs in 2002 by William D. Dearstyne
‘62 to honor former coach and director of athle cs Bob Latour, and further underscores the successful tradi on of the varsity aqua cs programs at Bucknell.

LIFE AFTER BUCKNELL
According to a Bucknell Career Development Center survey of the Class of 2011,
89 percent of the respondents were either employed or a ending graduate school six
months a er gradua on. Of Bucknell’s 838 graduates in that class, 812 (97 percent)
responded to the survey. Of that por on of the class, 71 percent were employed, 18
percent were enrolled in graduate school, three percent were both employed and in
graduate school part- me, and only three percent were s ll seeking employment.
Of those a ending graduate school, 16 percent are pursuing degrees in social
sciences and the humani es, 13 percent are in law school, 15 percent are pursuing
advanced degrees in engineering and 14 percent are pursuing advanced degrees in
medicine.
The mean salary for the 2011 graduates responding to the survey was $48,552 and
was highest for engineers. The mean salary for a graduate with a bachelor of science
degree in computer science & engineering was $56,882, and the mean salary for a
graduate with a bachelor of science degree in business administra on was $50,726.
Graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences had a mean salary of $42,260.
Most 2011 graduates (82 percent) were employed in the Northeast, with Pennsylvania (23 percent), New York (17 percent) and New Jersey (16 percent) leading the
way. Among the most popular employers of Bucknell graduates were firms such as
PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloi e Consul ng, Teach for America, Bucknell University, United State Navy, Goldman Sachs, United States Army and High Performance
Technologies, Inc.
Nearly 20 percent of the class respondents secured employment through Bucknell
on-campus interviews, Career Development Center leads, networking or offers from
former employees.
