AN ISLAND WITH AMBITION Green and durable initiatives on Goeree-Overflakkee GoereeOverflakkee My island Goeree-Overflakkee is truly special. You will experience it when you visit this island in the south of Holland: you can see and feel the power of life. Close to the dynamic cities of Rotterdam and Antwerp - and yet completely away from everything – you can enjoy the magnificent Dutch skies during a walk through the dunes and along the wide beaches. Take a cycle tour through the spacious, centuries-old polders or one of the many nature reserves. Goeree-Overflakkee is a wonderful place to live or to experience a lovely holiday. Goeree-Overflakkee wants to be energy neutral by 2020 and aspires to be the most sustainable island of Western Europe. You will soon understand why people refer to it as ‘my island’. Goeree-Overflakkee is the place to come home to! Island with many green initiatives GREENPOINT HOLLAND-ZEELAND: AGRARIAN COMPANY WITH A SUSTAINABLE PETROL STATION Sustainability and economic growth go hand-inhand on Goeree-Overflakkee. At the farm of entrepreneur and initiator Tonnie van Peperstraten in Oude-Tonge, the first sustainable petrol station of the Netherlands is under construction: Greenpoint Holland-Zeeland. Greenpoint fully focuses on making the farm and the energy provision in a region sustainable , for instance by installing solar panels on the roofs of the farm, collecting rainwater, and producing biogas from sugar beets. And there is a direct link between the petrol station and a wind park. The production and storage of hydrogen make it possible to buffer large quantities of energy, such as solar, wind, and tidal energy that might be generated in the future. vanpeperstraten-greenpoint.com It is Goeree-Overflakkee’s ambition to be energy neutral by 2020 by way of energy-saving and sustainable power generation as well as the use of the sun, sea and wind. Municipality, entrepreneurs and social parties are cooperating in various innovative projects, such as the hydrogen tank station, a tidal power station, solar panels, wind energy and sustainable driving - the latter, for example, by realizing charging points for electric vehicles. From late 2015 we will also have four hydrogen buses running between Dirksland and Rotterdam. These buses will be stationed in Oude-Tonge. A TIDAL POWER STATION FOR BETTER WATER The provinces of South-Holland and Zeeland, the municipalities of Goeree-Overflakkee and SchouwenDuiveland, and the State have combined their efforts and dedicated themselves to the construction of a tidal power station at the Brouwersdam. This dam, once constructed as one of the major Delta Works projects for the purpose of water management and security, was completed in 1971. The Brouwersdam changed the Grevelingen estuary into a saltwater lake. Unfortunately, the closure has had a deteriorating effect on the water quality in the Grevelingen area. The future tidal power station should turn this process around and improve the water quality and the Grevelingen ecosystem through the inflow of oxygen-rich seawater. This would render (mussel) fishery profitable again and open up new opportunities for tourism and recreation. At the same One of the options of the tidal power station that is still to be built time, the tidal effect through the water gates in the Brouwersdam itself could be used to generate energy with a tidal power station. This new power station will be the epitome of innovation as, unlike any other tidal power station built so far, it will have to depend on restricted tides in order to generate large-scale energy, safeguard security and improve the water quality in the Grevelingen area. It will supply green energy to at least 25,000 households on GoereeOverflakkee and Schouwen-Duiveland. The parties involved are currently exploring all the possibilities of such a tidal power station and, depending on their findings, the construction will start in 2018. The plans include a Tidal Technology Centre at the Flakkeese Spuisluis at the Grevelingendam. This test centre will be a great addition to the others in the Netherlands as well as throughout Europe. It will provide turbine engineering companies the opportunity to perform (long and short term) tests at the appropriate scale in a realistic setting - at limited and controllable costs. The centre will also be a versatile research location where staff and students from educational and knowledge institutions can study various phenomena in and around tidal turbines, such as flow patterns, morphology and fish friendliness. getijdencentralebrouwersdam.nl ENERGETIC REGION GOEREE-OVERFLAKKEE In early 2013, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment, the municipality of GoereeOverflakkee, the Rabobank Goeree-Overflakkee and the architect’s firm Casa Ratsma have joined forces. By the name of Energetic Region, a pilot project was started on Goeree-Overflakkee in March 2013, which stimulates energy saving in the built-up area as well as the possibilities of generating sustainable energy locally. Energetic Region is such a great success that it has given rise to the ambition to realise 100 energetic regions in the Netherlands. Similar regions have now been set up in places such as Katwijk, Oldenzaal and Zeeland, and the alliance has meanwhile been extended to include a great number of new partners, such as the foundation “Meer met minder” (More with Less), the VNG Association of Dutch Municipalities, Eneco and the nature and environmental federations. Energetic Region is a pivotal source of information and advice for businesses that are looking into energy-cuts and energy generation.. The foundation that is behind it all supports municipalities in their policy to encourage companies, social organisations, and private persons to make their buildings sustainable. ZONNEPARK OUDDORP Solar park “Zonnepark Ouddorp aan Zee” is the largest soilbound installation of solar panels in South-Holland. On 1.3 hectares, there are over 2,900 solar panels. The electricity that they generate equals the use of 225 households per year. The solar park is an initiative of Klepperstee recreational park and is the property of Deltawind. There are plans for the realisation of more new solar parks on the land, the first of which will be over 10 times as large as the solar park of Ouddorp aan Zee. energiekeregio.nl zonneparkouddorp.nl The ‘Immanuel’: SUSTAINABLE FISHERIES MASTER PLAN SUSTAINABLE FISHERY The fisheries’ sector on Goeree-Overflakkee works with various sustainable fishing methods, such as flyshooting, twinrig and pulse wing. These techniques cause less disturbance to the sea-floor and reduce unwanted bycatch. Ships that use these sustainable fishing methods consume less fuel (this can mount up to a saving of 50%). In the Fisheries’ Innovation Centre in Stellendam, fisheries can test their nettings, adjustments to their fishing tackle, and new fishing and catching techniques for crustaceans and shellfish in a 32 metre salt-water basin with sandy soil. The combined knowledge of various organisations and technical partners in this centre helps fishermen to make further progress in sustainability. Scientists are also welcome at the centre for their research, and practical lessons are provided here for several educational institutions. Fishing with vision and skill: two components of a sector that is very determined about its course. The MDV Sustainable Fishery Masterplan collaborative project aims to demonstrate that the current technical knowledge and innovations make it possible to fish the North Sea in a more economic and sustainable way. To put their money where their mouth is, various professional fields within the fisheries sector put their heads together and designed and constructed a pilot ship within just one year. This vessel of the future is already fishing the North Sea! The ship was built by the shipbuilders Hoekman (of Urk) and Padmos (in Stellendam) and IJtama (Stellendam), and Electro Westhoeve (Ouddorp). Cooperatie Westvoorn (Stellendam) and HFK Engineering of Baarn were responsible for the new Twin-Rig Pulse fishing tackle. This ship is designed for sustainable fishery. masterplanduurzamevisserij.nl SUSTAINABLE RECREATION. THIS TOO CAN BE DONE ON GOEREE-OVERFLAKKEE DELTAWIND The Deltawind cooperative is an initiative of the local population; today, the cooperative has more than 1,600 members. Deltawind has been generating sustainable energy on Goeree-Overflakkee since 1989. Deltawind wants to contribute to a cleaner environment and a sustainable society. It is developing large-scale wind- and solar energy projects, stimulates energysaving, and supports smallscale generation in public buildings and private houses. Deltawind is also studying the possibilities of applying other forms of sustainable energy. Furthermore, it provides information about sustainable energy and saving energy. deltawind.nl There are various camping sites, hotels and beach lodges with a Green Key certificate, which partly or completely run on solar energy. At the head of the Goeree-Overflakkee island there are also various sustainable recreation homes and hotels (and some more under construction). In Ouddorp, an eco-hotel (Punt West) has been realised. There are also advanced plans for completely self-supporting back-to-basic homes in the Greenhuus concept. The island offers numerous eco-friendly activities; you can hire an electric scooter, for instance, or take a tour of the harbour canals in a noiseless boat. punt-west.nl www.greenhuus.nl LED LIGHTING & SUSTAINABLE LIGHT TOWERS CLEAN BEACHES, PRISTINE NATURE AND CLEAN AND SAFE (SWIMMING) WATER On Goeree-Overflakkee, it is standard to include cradle to cradle light poles with LED-lighting in all the new building projects. LED-lighting has the advantage that it has a longer life span than regular lighting, the maintenance costs are lower, the energy consumption drops, and the environment suffers less light pollution Cradle to cradle light poles are made of recyclable aluminium and have a life span of 60 years. Goeree-Overflakkee has an outstanding reputation in various sustainability areas. The island has won as many as nine Blue Flags for several years in succession. On two beaches and in seven marinas the Blue Flag flies proudly. In 2014, the island even had the greatest number of Blue Flags for marinas in the world! The permission to fly a Blue Flag is an international recognition of the efforts of the beach municipality or marina manager towards clean and safe (swimming) water, pristine nature, good sanitary facilities and a healthy environment. Moreover, Goeree-Overflakkee has won a QualityCoast Gold Award for sustainable tourism for a number of years. This means that Goeree-Overflakkee has been acclaimed as a green holiday destination. North Sea beaches of Goeree-Overflakkee have also acquired the much-wanted four stars in the Cleanest Beach contest. The beaches come under the category of very clean and are ranked third in the Dutch list. SEAL SANCTUARY A SEAL The former Expo Haringvliet in Stellendam houses A Seal, a seal sanctuary and expo. Stellendam is situated favourably near the North Sea and the Voordelta area, at the centre of the area where the seals love to stay. A Seal is mainly focused on rescuing stranded and weakened seals in the South-Holland and Zeeland waters. For the welfare of the animals, it is beneficial to spare them a long journey, which is why the Foundation A Seal opened up a sanctuary in the southwestern Netherlands. The sanctuary focuses on the earliest possible return of the animals into nature, with good chances of survival. Apart from the rescue of seals, A Seal is involved in scientific research into the seals in the area. A Seal also provides information and education about the seals, their natural habitat, and their rescue and care. The interactive exhibition about the sea, the seal, Haringvlietsluizen, and the KNRM (Royal Dutch Lifeboat Society) is well worth a visit. aseal.nl Furthermore, any public maintenance by the municipality always includes the substitution of the existing lighting by LED. If the pole itself also needs to be replaced, the cradle to cradle light pole is erected. Lighting is a typical example of how the municipality is to fulfil its ambition to be energy neutral by 2020. It is well on its way: the business area in Oude-Tonge has been entirely furnished with LED lighting - which also improves the safety of the area – while the hamlet Havenhoofd is enjoying the benefits of the brand new Philips LED lighting system City Touch with remotely controllable fixtures – a scoop! ISLAND OF GOOD TASTE Goeree-Overflakkee is known for its fresh produce: potatoes, biological (goat’s) cheese, biological Nashi pears, tomatoes, vegetables, eggs, champagne rhubarb, green asparagus, sustainably caught fish and lobster and the world-famous Stellendam shrimps, to name but a few. You can visit farmers on the island or the Stellendam fish auction and discover more about our local produce, how ice cream and cheese are made, or how our fish is caught in an eco-friendly way. You will naturally also have ample opportunity to treat yourself to these delicacies in our cafes and restaurants. THE MICROFERM MONO-DIGESTION OF MANURE: GREEN GAS BY RAS When it comes to combining valuable resources with modern techniques, Goeree-Overflakkee is no stranger! At their mixed agricultural company, the Ras family in Den Bommel upgrades biogas to green gas in an extraordinarily innovative way. The company upholds the principle of healthy and responsible nutrition with respect for animals and the environment in all aspects of life on, and off, the farm. They now have a small-scale installation for the mono-digestion of manure up and running. This recent addition enables them to produce biogas from a number of valuable sources, such as cattle manure. This biogas is upgraded to high-quality green gas, which is directly injected into the Goeree-Overflakkee natural gas network. This means that, thanks to this state-of-the-art installation, cattle manure, which until recently was only used as a nutritional source for land and flora, is now also an energy source for everyone connected to the natural gas network. What is more, when the installation is running to its full capacity, it pumps around some 8,000 m3 of fresh daily manure per day. This is equivalent to 185,000 m3 of natural gas - or approximately 120 households - per year. In other words: with this absolutely unique form of an eco-friendly energy source, it only takes 3 cows to supply a household with gas for a full year!
