JANUARY 2016 THE MONASH HOCKEY CLUB MAGAZINE The ‘Better Late Than Never’ Edition FARMING MONTHLY Monash Hockey Club’s 2015 Season All Wrapped Up! !1 JANUARY 2016 THE MONASH HOCKEY CLUB MAGAZINE PRESIDENTIAL REPORT Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all club members from everyone on the committee. I hope the break has been an enjoyable one and that everyone is well rested up so we can attack the 2016 season. Yearly wrap up The 2015 year for the club had mixed successes on the field with some teams up against it and others playing really strong hockey and making finals. Hopefully in 2016 we can move forward with some more really strong results. Off the field Monash made some really strong headway. Fundraising was the best the club has done in a long time, we renewed some key sponsors, revamped the website, hosted our first charity day for the Cancer Council (which raised just under $1000), ran our first ever intra-club summer hockey 9's competition which had 80 people sign up from all areas of the club and was a huge success. Financially we consolidated and improved our position at the club which means we will continue to be able to offer the same low fees at the club for another year. With the 2016 season fast approaching we are looking forward to see Monash implement a new canteen system to better track stock and improve the ordering process, implement a new uniform which will be solely sourced from the university meaning (hopefully) cheaper prices for items, more options and no risk for the club as Monash Hockey will no longer have to hold stock (more news on the uniform will be coming out shortly). Implementation of a new Club constitution which will streamline many cumbersome processes we currently have to abide by. Everyone on the Committee worked really hard during 2015 to ensure the smooth running of the club, but more help is needed. Too much responsibility falls on the committee members shoulders and we were short staffed which impacts the club in many ways. Being able to give some of your time will continue to ensure that Monash Hockey keeps moving in the right direction. Please contact Matt for expressions of interest. Coaching News Men: 1sts: Greame Chittendon has agreed to coach the men's 1's team again this year. Pre season starts early for the Men as they look to make finals and possibly a promotion back to VL1. 2nds: Steve James is not continuing in his role for 2016. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Steve for all his hard work over the past 2 seasons. Making finals 2 years in a row is an excellent achievement and the club thanks Steve for all of his contribution over the last 2 years. If you know of someone that would be perfect to coach this team please email [email protected] to discuss. Women: 1sts: Helen Morton has agreed to continue on with her role as Head Coach of the 1's. Helen has some great ideas moving forward for the 2016 season and I look forward to seeing the girls move positively forward in the 2016 season. 2nds: Ivan Britto has agreed to step up and take on this role at the club. Ivan has a very strong playing background and has coached the Men's 4's over the past few years. Ivan will bring a great dynamic to the team and I would like to thank him in advance for all the hard work he will put in over the 2016 season. !2 JANUARY 2016 THE MONASH HOCKEY CLUB MAGAZINE Our Awesome Committee! Chelsea has put in countless hours organising all of the fun events that you go to during the season. Chelsea has great Monash spirit and is always down at volunteer events with her cheeky grin. Chelsea is also President of her Surf Lifesaving Club, and a proud new home owner I would like to take this opportunity to thank Chelsea for all of her hard work over the years and wish her all the best in those ventures. Ireen Taufika (Fundraising) Ireen has run the fundraising at the club for the Past 3 years. Ireen has turned this into one of the most successful programs at the hockey club with her contacts at Super Sprint offering great opportunities to fund raise at the club. Ireen also looks after all of the presentation awards for the club, so for those of you with nice shiny trophies you have Ireen to thank for that. I look forward to seeing Ireen back in the Monash colours this year after having a year off with the birth of her first child. I would like to thank Ireen for all her hard work over the past few years. Therese McArthur (Mens CC) Therese has been the Mens CC for the past 3 years. She is the one that sends out all of the communication to the Mens side of the club, liaising with coaches organising last minute emergencies and dealing with Chitto… Thanks for all your hard work over the past few years. Brianna Goldsworthy (Juniors VP) Bri has been Juniors VP for the past 2 years. Bri has put in many hours working with our juniors program and giving us a really strong base to try and build this program up. This is one of the hardest things the club has ever attempted and there is a lot of work that goes into setting this program up. Bri is looking for a successor who is passionate about building this program up for the hockey club. I would like to thank Bri for all her hard work on this program. Nat Loh (Womens VP) Nat Took up Womens VP in the 2015 season. Nat put in a lot of work through a difficult time for the club in many respects. I would like to thanks Nat for all of her hard work during the 2015 season and wish her all the best for 2016. !5 JANUARY 2016 THE MONASH HOCKEY CLUB MAGAZINE Team Wrap Ups Womens 1s: 2015 began with such a promising start for the women's side of the club with record numbers participating in a well-organised and fun preseason. With a new coach and new 'small girls' joining the Vic League 1 squad, it felt like a fresh team with plenty of energy and excitement for the season ahead. Although the highlight of the year included 2 wins and 1 draw, there were plenty of well-fought matches and certainly no lack of superb skills from individual players. Therese was a standout in the goals, ensuring even our losses saw minimal goals scored against us. Special mention must also go to two small girls, both of whom happened to be international ring-ins. Firstly, Tayla (the South African), a great all-rounder who could be relied upon all over the field. And Chloe (the New Zealander), winner of best first year player, who was especially integral in attack. Overall, I thank all the girls who, at some stage during the year, played in the squad and made it an enjoyable year both on and off the field. We also thank Helen Morton for stepping in as coach during the season. I believe this club has great potential and look forward to the future as we continue to build our skills and the improved results that will follow. By Alice Dutton, Womens 1s Captain Womens Vic League 1 Reserves: The 2s had a mixed season in the Vic league 1 reserves comp finishing 8th out of 12 on the ladder. Losing Wilko from goals after only five games was a blow to the team, but we came through the season with some great keeping by Shelley and Therese, and Chels Bowman got into the goals for us (we were tempted to keep her as first runner on PCs during these games). Overall we had a very solid defence which combined with some great goal scoring allowed us to finish with a positive goal difference after our 5 wins and 3 draws. We had 40 different players over the season, but managed to come together as a team on many occasions including two 10-1 wins over Dandenong and a memorable game in a sandy swimming pool against Mornington that was eventually called off. Also notable was the well played draw against MUHC, the eventual winner of our comp, which we very nearly won - that makes us equal champs right? Over the season we had 12 different goal scorers with special mentions for Jas Sylivris who scored 9 goals and Cassie David with 8 goals. The season ended with two well deserved awards with Meg Young named best and fairest and Rachel Manderson honored with the coaches award. Thanks to all the people that played for the 2s this season, looking forward to more great hockey from all these girls next year at Monash. By Kat Monaghan, Womens 2s Captain Mens 1s: The boys were quietly confident heading into the 2015 season, after narrowly missing out on a semi final appearance in 2014. Returning most of the core players and with another year under Chitto, the lads had some great games throughout the season including wins against the top sides. The nail biter against Melbourne High stands out as a highlight. B&F winner Jack Frantz was a rock in the midfield, and both Vish Patel and Senny Surendran did damage when they joined him. New recruits Jayson Hammond and Marty Dowman both enjoyed excellent seasons with crowd favourite Dowman becoming a permanent fixture in the backline. Unfortunately injuries and other absences hurt the team in the middle of the year, leaving them just shy of the four in the final round. Unable to clinch the necessary points, the boys were left to watch finals from the sidelines. By Richard Pearce, 1s Player Mens 2s: After a first round finals exit in 2014 the 2s were confident they’d be one of the top sides in the competition come September. Despite an up-and-down start to the season, the 2s constantly improved and developed as a side and were competitive with the top dogs, as shown with a draw against Knox and a win against MUHC, who were both top of the ladder at the time. Massive improvement came from a number of players, but notably Damien Mays and Prasad Palanisamy. Import Will De Vliegher was a standout, as shown by his second place in the best & fairest results despite only playing half a season.Journeyman Justin Bouchard was a model of consistency, taking home the B&F medal. Zeming Zhou found a new home in the midfield and looked like he was born there, being in the bests almost every week. The season ended with another first round finals exit. The boys battled all game for it to be even at the end of full and extra time, suffering a tough loss at the hands of a shootout. The passing of club legend Stephen Bird will leave the boys emotional for a while. You and your right-to-left drag will be sorely missed. By Richard Pearce, 2s Player !6 JANUARY 2016 Womens 4s: The women's 4's more affectionately known as the Legion of Boom has a stellar first season, just missing out on a final berth with a loss in round 18. Made up primarily of newbies, the Legion of Boom had their ups and downs throughout the season along with many learning curves, however their hunger to win and improve continue was a continual driver throughout the season. What really brought the team together was their camaraderie that was on constant display on and off the field. Once the ball got rolling and the team displayed perfect synergy going on a five game winning steak in addition to two 6-1 wins over their weaker opponents. The season ended well with Kat Vuong deservedly winning Best and Fairest along with Kate Galati winning the coaches award. Throughout the season, we had over 20 people rotating through the fours and each member playing their part in a very successful season. Looking forward to seeing what comes next from their great group of girls. By Rachel Rodrigues, Womens 4s Coach Vets Womens: Monash fielded two women's Masters teams this year (A and B grade) with about 35 players being involved. Competition in both grades was very fierce and fairly even. Despite some great games, both teams just missed out on the finals but with a solid season behind us and lots of players, we should be right for next year....although more players are always welcome. Thanks to everyone who played. By Kerryn McIver, Womens Vets Coordinator THE MONASH HOCKEY CLUB MAGAZINE Vets Mens: Throughout 2015, there was some really good hockey played by the vets mens. Unfortunately neither team made the finals, with B SE finishing 5th and B NW finishing 6th. B SE’s loss to GDW in round 17 cost the team dearly, although the very slow start to the season did not assist either!! B NW struggled through the season playing many games with 10 players and no keeper. But saying that, there was some really good hockey played and many attacking moves achieved despite the shortage of numbers. Thank-you to all who played this year, and the few that filled in at the last minute. We were very tight on player numbers this year and need to recruit another 3-4 players next year to make it easier. So spread the word to anyone who is 35+ next year. By David Wells, Mens Vets Coordinator Mens 3s: The Monash Men’s 3rd’s were up against it this year. With a large turnover of players, no pre-season to speak of, and minimal experience at the Pennant B level, our focus was set on the goals of player development, learning the team structure and most importantly, having a good time. Despite the scoreboard going against us for much of the season, many of the playing group have stated that this was one of their most fun and enjoyable seasons, and are looking forward to coming back and continuing to improve as a team and compete hard next year. This would indicate that many of our goals going into the season were met. As a first time senior coach, it was fantastic to see the team grow and develop throughout the year both as individuals and as a group. Fighting hard all year, and never dropping their heads, the win at the midway point of the season was a great reward for effort, and is hopefully the first of many to come. Every member of our team improved throughout the season. With such a young side, this provides great promise for the future. By Trent Bussell, Mens 3s Coach Mens 4s: As I sit here writing this report I reflect on the most difficult season of hockey I have ever had. Yet, I still somehow feel a sense of achievement and pride. There are unique occasions when sport needs to be more than just a catalogue of wins, losses and draws. It has to be about hard work, improvement and team building. The Monash Men’s Fours began building the foundations for what I am sure will be a much brighter future if we can keep the core of this team together. This team improved individually, and as a group, more than I could have expected them to. They played brilliant hockey at different times in the season, taking it up to top four opponents. Their enthusiasm for training, improvement and the game of hockey itself was beyond question. I am truly grateful for the “buy in” I got from the team on ethos, strategy and tactics we wanted to implement. While we played a team game there were certain individuals who stood out. Dan Griemink was a giant for us in goals. Will Duddy was our leader and a rock in our backline. I certainly owe Will for his ability to cover for me as coach when my work or game clashes took its toll. Oscar Garrington and Bikram Singh showed real promise as centre halves and should be pushing to player higher up the grades in future. New players like Allan Ou, Stephen Xia and Simran Singh showed enormous improvement working as a unit in our forward line. In my experience, it is clear that tough times and adversity are a great revealer of character. The players I coached have shown tremendous character and I hope they stick with the sport and with the club. We’ll be stronger for their passion and experiences and start to enjoy more success with people like this around. By Ivan Britto, Mens 4s Coach !7 JANUARY 2016 J U N I O R S THE MONASH HOCKEY CLUB MAGAZINE Under 10s: This year our Monash U10s had a great year for development, the team had several new additions in Jeremy L and Isaac S, who worked well up the side line together. This year we also welcomed back a previous U10 player in Didi, who picked up where he left off chasing down the 50/50 balls. The team was led by Mel Morton, kept the game fun for the kids. It was a great year for the kids who grew in leaps and bounds. By Bri Golsworthy, Juniors VP Under 12s: The Monash Monsters U14 team finished strongly this season. After recruiting a number of new players in the last few rounds, the U14s were in with a chance to make the finals. An unfortunate draw and unlucky loss left the team waiting to hear the results from other teams in the pool. Fortunately, goal difference pushed Monash into the top 4 to take on an undefeated Mentone team in the first round of finals. The Monash Monsters pulled together as a team and played their best game of the season, surprising Mentone from the first whistle. While Dylan Booth managed to score one of the few goals against Mentone for the season and Arjit Sachdeva kept Mentone out of the goals for a long time, the Monash Monsters couldn't hold on. Despite the loss, the team was very positive about their game and are looking forward to a promising 2016 season! A big part of this is the university is going to take over all uniform supplies for affiliated sporting clubs. The hockey club will be greatly benefited by this as we will no longer have to wear the financial risks associated with uniforms and potentially we will be able to provide uniforms at a cheaper cost. We are looking for members to help out, so if you are interested in helping with the redesign email [email protected]. Hopefully in the next few weeks we will have a few different designs to review and vote on. In the new year we will then have some samples for people to try on and give us feedback before we finalise for the 2016 season. More information will be made available as we hear it from the uni. Committee Members for 2016 Needed! Monash Hockey Club unfortunately doesn't run on its own and we rely on help from our members to make it as awesome as possible. So if you think you could lend a helping hand, why don't you join the committee. Whilst it might be a little bit of work it is a whole lot of fun. If you are interested send an email to monashhockeycomms@ gmail.com or message our Facebook page. There are a whole range of positions, with one that will be sure to suit you! Plus, no experience is needed. !9 JANUARY 2016 THE MONASH HOCKEY CLUB MAGAZINE Monash Summer Comp ‘15 2015 saw Monash’s inaugural, hockey 9s summer comp. With 6 teams in the mix, each week saw tough competition, some questionable new skills and very close score boards. A big thank you to our President, Matt, for organising the comp and the other committee members who helped. Congratulations goes to Orange for winning the 2015 season and to everyone who got involved. Played and loved it? Missed out but want to play next year, let us know so we can continue the competition. Winners are Grinners Last place, not so much !1 0 JANUARY 2016 THE MONASH HOCKEY CLUB MAGAZINE We will be calling for volunteers to help with the triathlons over summer! All it involves is some easy work, generally handing out race kits or helping with pack up at reasonable hours (no 5am starts). By you helping out and volunteering, fees for the 2016 season are kept down plus you get a free t-shirt and showbag! For every volunteer the club gets $50 so its well worth it! When events come up we will post on our Facebook page, so keep up to date by liking us at; Monash University Hockey Club! On another note: After a hot summer night of hockey, Mems was very disappointed with the size of his icecream scoop from Messina. After a proclamation of how big a scoop should be, he received another ice-cream (this one of a decent size) for free a returned back to his usual happy self. @MONASHHOCKEY #teammonash !1 1 JANUARY 2016 THE MONASH HOCKEY CLUB MAGAZINE Christmas has come early to the Monash Hockey Club, as Vic Health have awarded us a grant of $3000! All part of a plan to get more Victorians up and about, the club is allocating the money towards some important juniors and seniors equipment. Active Club Grants offer funding to community sport and recreation clubs to increase or maintain participation through their club, by purchasing core equipment. They are part of VicHealth’s long-term plan to get more Victorians living healthier and happier lives and are designed to help local sports clubs attract new members, particularly those who aren’t getting the recommended 2.5 hours per week of moderate physical activity. Regular physical activity is a key factor in promoting good health and preventing chronic disease. However, less than a third of Australians are getting enough physical activity to benefit their health. Thanks to the grant Monash’s 2016 season will see 2 new junior goalie kits and sticks, junior balls and ball bags plus a coaching kit. To share around the rest of the club will be line markers, corner markers, cones, and sets of face masks. A huge thank you goes out to Brianna Golsworthy for submitting the application and obtaining the grant for the club. !1 2
