FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE
BY DEACON RICK HAECKEL
Today’s Gospel speaks of forgiveness in a way
so profound that it seems beyond our reach. I
mean really, the law was broken, the event
witnessed and the perpetrator has no standing in
the community. It’s a slam dunk and the scribes
and the Pharisees waste no time in demanding
that “justice” be done. Those “learned in the Law”
see a chance to double down. They try to trap
Jesus into abrogating the legal requirement that
Moses commanded and also diminish Jesus’
stature by raising theirs. They cannot see the
forest (God’s care) for the trees (legalism). As we
journey on in Lent take a moment to fit ourselves
into that picture. When the rules tell us plainly
what we should do we easily avoid looking
beyond the event itself into the circumstances in
which it arose. Over and over Jesus invites us to
see beneath the veneer, to see blindness not as
punishment by God but as an invitation to
service, to become the prodigal parent who
forgives out of great love, to judge not the
adulterers but ourselves … asking that we
discover the healing balm of forgiveness which is
given without judgment of its effectiveness or the
worthiness of the recipient. The change of stance
when we put aside our certain righteousness in
favor of mercy gives peace and wholeness to
both parties. Yes, it’s important to follow rules but
not without evaluating their effect in each
circumstance. Robots follow rules (they are fun)
but our lives, centered in Jesus and his love, are
best lived in wonder and unearned grace.
GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK
It may seem boring and repetitive but if everyone put
bottles, cans, etc. into recycling bins instead of the
trash … imagine what the reuse of materials would
save. It’s not hard to do but changing habits can be.
Make recycling a Lenten corporal work of mercy :-).
HAVE YOU MOVED?
Have you moved recently and need to update
your mailing information with the parish? Email
us at [email protected], drop us a note in the
Sunday collection or call us at (408) 779-3959.
We need your complete name, old & new address and your new telephone number if that
has changed. Don’t miss out on all the great
news we mail/email to our parishioners!
FROM THE DESK OF FR. JERONIMO
CONTINUED......
The Finance Council. This council has three new
members and I hope to get at least two more by
the end of June.
The Master Parish Plan. We had a very
interesting and productive meeting last month. I
can assure to you that in the hearts of all those
who attended they would love have a new church
building, however, the cost of a new building
seems to be unreachable as we speak. The
Finance Council will check the results and
probably consult an Architect to explore all the
possibilities to renew the inside of the present
church.
The Pastoral Council. Those who have been
identified as potential members of the council will
soon receive a letter with the date and time of our
first meeting.
The second part consists of the reflection that all
the registered parishioners have received in the
mail. I know that many of you are not registered.
That’s why I decided to include it in this bulletin. It
is about the celebration of Holy Week. Once
again, we have the great opportunity to celebrate
Holy Week, especially the Holy Triduum.
One more time, we accompany the Lord at His
triumphal entrance to Jerusalem; during His last
Supper; His agony on the cross; His death; His
burial and His Resurrection from the dead.
May the (Word) proclaimed at these celebrations
help you to develop a deep personal relationship
with Jesus. May the Liturgical Celebrations
(Worship) help you to make your Sunday
Eucharistic Celebration the heart of your daily life
so that you too may go out and announce
(Witness) to everyone that the Lord is Risen.
Welcome!
Our warmest welcome to all who
celebrate with us, whether long-time residents
or newly arrived in the parish. We thank God
for you. If you are not registered, please fill out
this form and place it in the collection basket or
mail it to the parish office.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
LITURGY WORSHIP
REFLECTION: God created and always creates
Have you considered making a
Memorial or Honor Gift during the
Easter Season?
Did you know that you can make an Easter
gift in memory or in honor of a loved one at
Easter?
Honoring someone with a gift at Easter is a
great way to tell them how much you love
them and support your parish at the same
time. This gift honors someone you love
while helping others. You can add the honorees name and address on the check or
the envelope.
A more significant way to remember a deceased loved one is through a memorial
contribution and it can be made as an
Easter offering. Memorial contributions can
be made for any special occasion. They
are also a great idea during Easter as we
celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. You simply need to state on the
check or envelope the name and address
of deceased.
We will notify the family member a gift was
made in their memory or to honor them.
May your family have a wonderful and
Blessed Easter. I pray that the peace of
Christ is with you always.
God Bless, Anna Quinones

something new in Christ. The prophet Isaiah in the
first reading, Is. 43:16-21,
tells us that God’s merciful
love for us is as welcome as
a stream in the desert. It
gives new life and joy to all.
St. Paul in the second reading, Phi. 3:8-14, marks the
beginning of his new life in
Christ so that he experiences the power of the Lord’s
resurrection. The woman in
the Gospel, Jn. 8:1-11, receives Christ’s forgiveness of her sins and thus a new life from
Christ.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Next
weekend,
many
churches provide palms to
be carried in the opening
moments of the liturgy, as
we gratefully recall Jesus’
entry into the holy city of Jerusalem. The children who
greeted him on that day
used what was both handy
and traditional, since palms
were carried to inaugurate
the joyful harvest feast of Succoth. To this day,
faithful Jews are directed to take a beautiful palm
branch, green and straight as possible, called a
lulav, and bind it with three myrtle branches fifteen
inches long, and two longer willow branches. At
the end of the temple service, everyone carries the
lulav, circling the sanctuary in a dance called the
Hoshanot, singing hymns of joy.
In other climates, Jews and Christians alike have
had to make accommodations over the years. In
Italy, everyone carries olive branches today, often
brought from their own garden. In England, forsythia branches are preferred, a relative of the olive, sign of peace. Germans prefer pussywillows,
and others look for flowering spring branches. In
our part of the world, what do you think would be
the best choice to express joy and welcome, and to
remind us of the joy of Christ’s victory even as we
prepare to commemorate his passion?

Cena; durante su agonía en la cruz; su muerte;
resucitado.
Sinceramente,
P. Jeronimo Gutierrez

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
Adult Faith Formation
for the parish of St Catherine
Gestures and postures at Eucharist
General Instruction for the Roman Missal
Among gestures are included also actions and processions, by which the Priest, with the Deacon and
ministers, goes to the altar; the Deacon carries the
Evangeliary or Book of the Gospels to the ambo before the proclamation of the Gospel; the faithful
bring up the gifts and come forward to receive Communion. It is appropriate that actions and processions of this sort be carried out with decorum while
the chants proper to them are sung, in accordance
with the norms laid down for each. (#44)
Processions
Apart from special celebrations, the normal
Mass has five processions:
1. Entrance
2. Gospel
3. Gifts
4. Communion
5. Exit
Both the entrance and exit processions can
have a full set of ministers: Incense ministers,
candle & cross ministers, deacon/lector with
Gospel book, priest celebrant.
The Gospel procession features the Gospel
Book carried by the deacon/priest to the ambo.
The Gifts procession features the bread and
wine carried by the faithful to present to the
priest.
The Communion procession features the faithful
coming to receive the Body and Blood of Christ.
All processions are intended to be accompanied
by some chant or song.
Dancing?
The word “dance” does not appear in the instructions for Mass. But it is a logical deduction
that any of the processions could be choreographed in a way that would be an appropriate
dance “with decorum,” as long as that does not
detract or distract from the liturgical action.
FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
Sometimes, it’s really important just to stop and think of how much God loves us.
Someone shared this quote with me while I was at the LA Congress two weeks ago. I thought it would
look good over a sweet backdrop. If you like it, let me know and I can email you the color version of it. Or
you can follow us on Instagram @st.catherine.ym and find it there. And if you actually know the source
of the quote, let me know too because I haven’t been able to find it (neither was the person who told it to
me).

What Exactly Is This Stephen Ministry We've
Been Hearing About?
Stephen Ministry is lay caring ministry. Stephen
Ministers are not counselors or therapists; rather, they are caring Christian friends who offer
a listening ear or help others through the
tough times in life. Stephen Ministers are trained
and supervised in their ministry; currently a new
group of ministers are in training here at St.
Catherine. If you, or someone you know, would

may help, contact Claranne Schirle at 408-7821413.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
St. Catherine School News
Fifth graders are wearing their boots to school to
make sure they are ready to hike at Science Camp.
SCIENCE CAMP
Our fifth graders are leaving for Science Camp on
Wednesday! They spend three days at the Marin
Headlands Institute in Marin County.
During their stay the campers learn about native
plants/animals and habitats, the water cycle, sea life,
astronomy and weather. They hike, explore tide
pools, learn the history of the Marin Headlands, and
enjoy campfires together. Please keep our fifth
graders, their teacher and chaperones in your prayers this week that they may have a safe and productive time at Science Camp. Look for some exciting
pictures of their adventures in future bulletins.
MISSION CARNIVAL
Every year around St. Patrick’s Day, St. Catherine
School holds a Mission Carnival. Each class sponsors a game or food booth, tickets are sold for a
quarter each. Under the direction of the teachers
and parents, the games are run by the students. All
proceeds from the event are given to charity. This
year the funds will go to the Learning and Loving
Center and the Awaso International School in Ghana.
Our Mission Carnival is held the afternoon of Friday,
March 18. Students will enjoy face painting, fishing
game, duck pond, cake walk, Dance Fever, videos
games, food booths and more! Students will be able
to redeem their prize tickets for an array of toys &
prizes. This is a wonderful way for our students to
show leadership & take active roles in helping others.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS
Join the students of St. Catherine
School for Stations of the Cross
every Thursday during Lent at 2:30
in the church. All are welcome!
Second graders enjoyed a Read-a-thon on Student
Appreciation Day during Catholic Schools Week.
LEARNING
SPANISH
In addition to Religion and all the
core subjects, all students at St.
Catherine School are learning
Spanish. In the lower grades students learn basic greetings and
prayers and build vocabulary such as days of the
week, months, body parts, food and clothing. In
the upper grades lessons are expanded to include more conversational language, verb usage
and grammar, as well as expanding vocabulary.
Our excellent teachers use a variety of strategies
to help students learn Spanish. Younger students learn poems and songs along with playing
games and building a Spanish vocabulary journal. In the upper grades students continue to
add to their vocabulary journals while role playing
for conversations, watching streaming videos in
Spanish, using online interactive programs, and,
of course, worksheets, quizzes and tests. Exposure to another language is a wonderful way for
our students to expand their horizons and make
connections with people from other cultures.
Be Not Afraid.
I Go Before You
Always.
