The company was started as a Cottage industry in 1974 and has been registered
in Alderney since March 1976. The intention was to revive the Alderney
sweater which had not been in production for over 50 years, and to establish
a knitting industry on the Island.

A PRODUCT OF ISLAND LIFE
The traditional Guernsey sweater has a story to tell. The rib at the top of the
sleeve is said to represent a sailing ship’s rope ladder in the rigging, the raised
seam across the shoulder a rope and the garter stitch panel, waves breaking
upon the beach. The traditional Guernsey sweater was originally a local
fisherman’s working garment, hence the diamond under the arm for ease of
movement and extra strength. It is knitted with close stitches from tightly
twisted wool and this gives it its ability to withstand sea spray and rain.
Traditional Guernsey sweaters were knitted by the womenfolk of the fishing
and farming families of the islands, when many earned their living from the
sea or the land. The distinctive pattern was handed down from generation to
generation and the knitting skills passed on from mother to daughter.
To this day traditional Guernsey knitwear and Alderney sweaters are
produced using age old techniques that have been tried and tested for more
than a century.
ROYAL APPROVAL
The traditional Guernsey sweater has always been made from the best English
worsted wool since the 16th century, when licenses were granted by the crown
to import wool from England. Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots both owned
Guernsey knitwear. Mary Queen of Scots even wore Guernsey stockings at her
execution. Channel Jumper still only knit with the best English worsted wool
and have presented their traditional Guernsey knitwear to several of today’s
British Royal Family as gifts when they have visited the small island of Alderney.

THE GUERNSEY
The Guernsey had become well known by the 19th century. Nelson
recommended it to the Admiralty as a valuable article of Naval clothing and,
in 1857, the soldiers of the garrison in Halifax, Nova Scotia were issued with
Guernseys as part of their winter equipment.

FINEST BRITISH
WORSTED WOOL
Our wool starts it’s life upon the fells
and downs of the British countryside.
The garments we manufacture use
worsted* wool which is hand graded
for the finest quality and thickness
of fibre. The wool is then scoured,
a cleaning operation that removes
oils, dirt and dead fibres.
To remove any short fibres the wool
is then combed. Removing these
short fibres ensures the wool will
be less likely to pill or ball-up on
the finished garment. Combing also
ensures the fibres are parallel and
ready for spinning. The wool is then
dyed in a very gentle process so as
not to damage the fibres.
The next step is to draw the
wool. This prepares the wool for
the worsted spinning frame by
determining a defined weight and
levelness, allowing for a very even
final yarn. The yarn is then spun and
twisted on semi-automatic spinning
frames with a vacuum extraction
system to remove contamination.
The twisting process ensures the
yarns are at their optimum strength
and softness for knitting.

* Worsted wool gets it’s name from the village of Worsted in Norfolk, one
of the manufacturing centres for yarn in the 12th century.

ventosana mattress pads
VentoSana is a cooling and warming mattress pad that uses water to control
the temperature of your bed. The temperature is then monitored and adjusted
by a smart control unit to remain balanced. Water flows through soft coils in
the mattress pad, actively adjusting the temperature of the bed. Only water
flows through the mattress pad; all temperature change happens in the
control unit and a remote control makes adjustment easy.

Using the VentoSana
The mattress pad under is placed under
your sheet. It is available to fit a single (190
x 70cm) or double mattress (190 x 140cm).
The pad is connected to a control unit
situated beside or under your bed. The
control unit then warms or cools the water
that circulates through a fine network of soft
coils inside the mattress pad. Installation is
simple and only takes a few minutes.
A remote control allows you to operate
the VentoSana from your bed. You can
modify the temperature or choose a delayed
start time, and these functions can also be
entered directly into the control unit.

by Peltier elements inside the control unit.
In contrast to electric blankets, there are no
electric elements in the mattress pad itself
making the VentoSana a very safe option.
