The final 2015 rolled off the line on Wednesday, June 17, and the first 2016 started on June 22. Here's a quick look at how the year stacked up: 34,240 Corvettes Produced 1,049 R8C Museum Delivery Cars, the 2nd highest number delivered when compared to Chevrolet Dealerships Stingray Coupes 60.6%; Z06 Coupes 20.4%; Stingray Convertibles 14.1%, Z06 Convertibles 4.9% 68% had automatic transmissions Black wheels and black interiors were the most popular Arctic White was the top selling color, though if you combine Torch Red and Crystal Red then "red" is #1. Randy and Mary Myers from Las Vegas, NV had the honor of being the first to pick up their 2016 Corvette, an Arctic White Stingray Convertible with Adrenaline Red interior... ironically, the same combination as the very first 1953 Corvettes that rolled off the line. If you are planning to order a new Corvette we hope you will consider adding option code R8C and picking it up here from us! Learn more about the delivery program online at http://www.corvettemuseum.org/ncm_delivery/index.shtml Membership News by Alice Iodice Here is hoping your July was enjoyable. Our membership to date is 278 strong. Since the last meeting we have received several new applications. Richard and Nan Kerp have a 1966 Nassau Blue coupe. They enjoy car shows. Maybe they will help with the 2016 car show. It is always welcomed. Garry Ballard has a 2000 Red Convertible. His hobbies are golf and traveling. We have male members who will be able to help him with those hobbies. He also enjoys car shows and road trips. Jim will be able to keep him busy. At the writing of this article, I have sent out several additional applications that have not yet been returned. So at the meeting in August, I'm hoping to be able to introduce a few more new members. If you have changed your address, telephone numbers, traded cars or have a new email address, please notify me so I can update the roster. We will be sending an updated roster within the next month. Anyone needing a new window decal please see me at the next meeting; the price of the extra decal will be $3.00. Hope you see you at the August meeting. Page 5 Volume 5 Issue 8 August 2015 www.myrtlebeachcorvetteclub.com ACTIVITIES & UPCOMING EVENTS Activities Central by Jim Spore There wasn’t much going on in July, but things are going to pick up. On August 1st one of our sister clubs, Grand Strand Corvettes is holding its annual show to benefit Jason’s House. Registration is $20 and the show will be held at the Deerfield Plaza in Surfside Beach from 10-2. 31st The first MBCC event in August is Thursday the 6th when we are going to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans baseball game/picnic. We already have close to 40 people signed up and it may be too late to sign up if you haven’t already done so. I plan to pick up tickets on Friday July The game plan is to meet at Broadway at the Beach between 5:15 and 5:30. I will hand out tickets to everyone and we will leave Broadway at 5:45. There is a good possibility we will not all make it through the traffic light at the same time but we will all be parking together along the water on the right side as you face the park. Once we are in the park we will receive wrist bands which will allow us to get into and out of the picnic area. Remember it will also be $1 beer night until 8:00. I know its summer time and a lot of us have company and or are out of town but please try and make it to our sponsored cruise in locations. Being at the north in I usually go to Papa’s Pizza and we almost always have a very good turnout. Last month Sharon and I went to our newest sponsor, the Grumpy Monk and we were very impressed. Give them a try. I also know Milardo’s always has a good turnout. Their happy hour is great and their sausage parm is outstanding! September things really start picking up. There are a lot more shows which I will send out under separate cover, and September is when we have the MBCC Picnic. The picnic will be held at the Waterbridge Community Center/pool off Carolina Forest Rd. Only a handful of people signed up at the July meeting, but I know that was early. Last year we had 86 people, but this year I’d like to see us break 100! That shouldn’t be a problem with 350+ members. All it will cost you is $7 per person. If you would like to come to the picnic, you can send your check to: MBCC, PO Box 4836, Myrtle Beach, SC 29597. Checks should be made out to MBCC. Once your check has been received, I will add you to the list. I’ve also got two other trips planned. The first is an overnight trip on Tuesday September 1 st to Charlotte to see the Broadway play Motown the Musical. Tickets are $70.50 each for some very good center seats. Hotel accommodations have not been finalized at this writing but will be before the August Gazette comes out. If you are interested send me an email and I will give you all the details: [email protected]. The other trip I am working on is a trip to Hilton Head Island to attend the Concours De Elegance Show. The dates are October 30th to November 2nd. This is a high-class 2-day car show, and entrants have to be invited to show their car. I understand there are different cars each day. So far we have 24 MBCC cars signed up to make the trip. I got a really good rate on rooms and a good rate on a two-day show pass. So, if you are interested in going, send me an email and I will give you all the details – again – [email protected]. In closing, if you are a new club member, these trips are a great opportunity to get to know your fellow MBCC members a lot better than you ever will at our monthly meetings. Just ask anyone who has ever made one of the club trips. Tony Kleiber, a worker on the assembly line, is given the privilege of driving the now-historic car off the line. Harley J. Earl, the man behind the Corvette, got his start in his father’s business, Earl Automobile Works, designing custom auto bodies for Hollywood movie stars such as Fatty Arbuckle. In 1927, General Motors hired Earl to redesign the LaSalle, the mid-range option the company had introduced between the Buick and the Cadillac. Earl’s revamped LaSalle sold some 50,000 units by the end of 1929, before the Great Depression permanently slowed sales and it was discontinued in 1940. By that time, Earl had earned more attention for designing the Buick “Y Job,” recognized as the industry’s first “concept” car. Its relatively long, low body came equipped with innovations such as disappearing headlamps, electric windows and air-cooled brake drums over the wheels like those on an airplane. After scoring another hit with the 1950 Buick LeSabre, Earl headed into the 1950s–a boom decade for car manufacturers–at the top of his game. In January 1953, he introduced his latest “dream car,” the Corvette, as part of GM’s traveling Motorama display at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. The sleek Corvette, the first all-fiberglassbodied American sports car, was an instant hit. It went into production the following June in Flint; 300 models were built that year. All 1953 Corvettes were white convertibles with red interiors and black canvas tops. Underneath its sleek exterior, however, the Corvette was outfitted with parts standard to other GM automobiles, including a “Blue Flame” six-cylinder engine, two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission and the drum brakes from Chevrolet’s regular car line. The Corvette’s performance as a sports car was disappointing relative to its European competitors, and early sales were unimpressive. GM kept refining the design, however, and the addition of its first V-8 engine in 1955 greatly improved the car’s performance. By 1961, the Corvette had cemented its reputation as America’s favorite sports car. Today, it continues to rank among the world’s elite sports cars in acceleration time, top speed and overall muscle.
