It is very important that you “watch your back” when performing these jobs. Bad posture and poor body mechanics can lead to back injuries. We focus on having a healthy spine that relates to a healthy nervous system which equals overall good health. Here are some tips to help prevent back injuries and keep your spine free of unwanted stress and that will help your nervous system functioning optimally. 1. Before starting any activity in the yard be sure to warm up first. Light stretching or a brisk walk are good ways to do this. This is especially important if you have been sitting or resting for a long period of time like after lunch. 2. Do not over do it. Make sure that you know your limitations when it comes to lifting. Get some one to help carry loads over 85lbs. Also take plenty of breaks; fatigue leaves you more prone to injury, especially your back and spine. 3. Use your legs and buttocks muscles to lift do not bend at the waist. Try kneeling down or sit to get close to a job. Avoid twisting your back when carrying objects or reaching, instead pivot your body. Carry loads close to your body never more than eight inches away. This allows you to be more stable and reduces extra stress on your spine. 4. When doing prolonged jobs such as raking or digging actions make sure to switch positions or sides to avoid repetitive motion. One sided motion or staying in one position too long can cause muscle imbalances that can cause spinal misalignments, muscle spasms, or sprain and strain injuries. Also use tools that have long handles to avoid bending over at the waist. 5. Don’t spend too much time out in the sun take precautions for your skin make sure to take breaks and drink plenty of water. Following these few tips will hopefully reduce your chance of back or spine injury and allow you to enjoy your spring and gardening activities. 3 Plum Creek Press Community Happy Hour At Lucky Cup! Finally, Tree Folks sponsors the Citizen Forester training, a ten hour course designed to cover the basics of urban tree care and installation. Workshop topics include trees in landscape design, tree identification, soil health, pruning and maintenance, planting, tree biology, and how to safely climb trees with the right equipment. The program includes both classroom and field training. Scott Harris is one of the foremost practitioners of urban forestry and education in the central Texas region and the leader of one of the largest reforestation efforts in the Austin area. Tree Folks has the most inspiring combination of educational and forestry activist programs related to tree care and urban greening in the southern United States. For example, Communitrees offers trees with The informal talk will be held rain or shine. Yard of the Month Judging Begins April 1 Just a reminder that Yard of the Month judging begins now! Awards are presented on April 15th! Have your gardens and lawns primed and ready for a great YOM season by the first of the month from April to September. Email nominations to [email protected]. Wet Bet! The Pool is open! 2007 Pool season is from Saturday, March 31st until October 28. Enjoy and be safe out there this year. Tree Survey in Fergus and McNaughton Parks If you see survey tape on some of the trees in Fergus Park and McNaughton Park, please don’t be alarmed and please don’t remove it. The park trees are being evaluated for safety and proper growth. In essence, our little forests are beginning the first steps of thinning to allow the remaining trees to reach their full stature and to allow for the removal of any trees that are potential safety hazards. Please leave any survey tape on the trees and ask anyone in the park to do the same. If you have any questions, feel free to email the PC Landscape Committee at [email protected] Reminder - Tree Stake Removal Remember, most trees need only minimal support for about 6 to 12 months. When staked properly, the main trunk of a tree should be able to move slightly in the wind. Very often, tree owners forget to adjust the guides or remove the stakes as the tree grows. Soon, the stakes prevent the tree from moving and getting its exercise. If you have noticed rubs and indentations on your tree, the guides are too tight. By all means, loosen them or remove them completely! During the first growing season, check the ties and stakes every time you mow or at least, once a month. Some of you may have attempted to remove the stakes in the past and found your tree leaning in the street! If this is the case, start slowly and loosen the ties every month to allow movement. Once your tree is standing tall and on its own, you need to remove the tree stakes. Please contact Dave Brown at [email protected] to borrow PC’s stake remover. It’s free of charge and somewhat easy to handle. Email any questions to [email protected]. The grandmother of student Riya Perez and mother of student Bodhi Kunda with students adorned with Hindi bindi mark. Special To Plum Creek Press The children of our local Montessori school, La Casa dei Bambini, took a month long journey to the Far East in February. The children of Asian heritage spent a day of education and fun teaching their classmates about indigenous foods, song, dress, folklore, language, geography, and much more. The countries represented were South Korea, The Philippines, India, and China. 10 Tonico Vanili, owner of the school, and Chiquie Estrada, the director, along with some of the children’s parents, ended the month long celebration with a traditional Chinese Dragon Parade featuring a pinata-style boar head in celebration of Year of The Boar 2007. The final feast was complete with a smoked boar head, Chinese noodles, Asian fruits, and fortune cookies. Chiquie said, “There is no better way to teach diversity than to experience it first-hand. It is very important for children to experience differences in culture at an early age because that is what they will experience in life.” Since the owner of the school, Tonico is from Brazil and Chiquie is Guatemalan, the school offers the students a multi-lingual program incorporating Spanish and Portuguese. Chiquie says the school will continue to celebrate the children’s various cultures each month. Switch to Zoysia! Mow Less, Weed Less, and Enjoy the shade! By: Christina Baese, PC Landscape Committee Have weeds overrun your Bermuda lawn? Has shade left you with bare patches of dirt? If you answered yes, it may be time to switch to Zoysia. As many of you know, Bermuda and Zoysia are the only approved lawn grasses for Plum Creek. St. Augustine grass is not allowed in Plum Creek and in most cases, prohibited by the City of Kyle. However, Zoysia provides a perfect blend of both worlds. It is very drought tolerant with a plush texture, and many cultivars have great shade tolerance. A little about Zoysia… Zoysia grasses are lush and lovely. They adapt to a wide variety of soils, have good to excellent shade tolerance and wear resistance, have high 12 drought and heat tolerance, and create an extremely dense, uniform sod, which crowds and reduces weeds! It has no serious pest or disease problems and is regarded as low maintenance, requiring less fertilizer and less mowing than Bermuda or St. Augustine! The blades vary from extremely fine to coarse textured, and the root system is deep. In extreme drought conditions or after the first hard frost, Zoysia turns straw in color but quickly responds to water and is among the first to green in the spring. To maintain growth, Zoysia requires about 1 inch of water per week during mid-summer, although it can survive on less than 1⁄2 inch of water per week, which will keep the grass alive during prolonged droughts. Close, frequent mowing produces the finest turf. In full sun, Zoysia should be mowed at a 1 to 2 inch height every 5 to 7 days. In shaded sites, it should be mowed slightly higher but at the same frequency. The biggest downfall to Zoysia is expense. It runs about $165 per pallet, which covers about 450 square feet. Also, Zoysia tends to grow slower than Bermuda and takes several months to a year for good coverage. However, once it takes root, it spreads quickly and forms a dense sod. At that point, it may invade your flowerbeds, but due to its slow growth, a well-maintained edge solves that problem. Are you ready to switch? Stick with solid sodding… Are you sold yet? Zoysia lawns are best established by solid sodding the entire lawn or large sections. If one of these are yours, please clean it up or replace it with a new metal box available at Home Depot or Lowe’s. Please remember that your mailbox and its appearance is subject to the CCR’s of the association. Also, some residents have started to place stickers or other adornments to their mailboxes. Please note this is not in compliance with the mailbox maintenance guidelines which state: Mail Boxes/Mountings Posts: Mail boxes and their mounting posts must be kept in good repair and straight. The post must be of white vinyl and the box can be either metal or vinyl provided it is of the same original size and white in color. The mail box must have a door flap, red flag and address on the box. All are encouraged to convert the addresses on the door flap to the type that fits under the crook of the mounting posts. Boxes must not be covered in unsightly decals or painted to indicate a favorite sports team/group. Please take a few minutes to clean/ repair/replace your mail box and save your HOA some money and fix up your mail box before it being cited as a DRV issue. Your assistance is appreciated. Plum Creek Press Seeks New Leader By: Sean Claes I have had a wonderful 4+ years being involved with the Plum Creek Press and Publicity Committee. I wish that the jogging trail extended around the second lake, and that the path between them would be built up so it wouldn’t flood so often. Occupation: Marcus has his own design firm, Mohon-Imber Interiors, based in San Antonio. I am a stay at home mom. How’d You End Up in Plum Creek? We admired that the neighborhood was a community and that people wanted to be friends. I still think the sales office paid all those people waving to us during our first visit. We met at church in Austin. I told my roommate that night that I had met the man I would marry. We’re both rat terriers. I’m red and white and Jack is black and tan, like a miniature doberman. Mom says that we both weigh 13 pounds, but we think she’s wrong -we know we’re a lot bigger than that! We live with Boots, a former stray cat that adopted us while we were out for a walk. We also have a buddy next door, Ringo, another rat terrier. He’s my secret boyfriend, but don’t tell him! We’ve had lots of other brothers and sisters that came for awhile and then left for new homes. Mom calls them “foster dogs”. Mom takes care of them for a group called Ratbone Rescues, which rescues dogs like us from death row and finds them good, loving homes. Our job is to put the foster dogs at ease and teach them that humans are really not so bad. During the past year our foster brothers and sisters found homes in places like New York City, Arkansas, Dallas and Bulverde. Our current foster brother is Baxter, a very sweet and laid back older dog who had something called “heartworm,” but he’s cured now. He also has a broken hip and is about to have surgery on it, so we have to be careful not to bounce on him for awhile. When I’m really lucky, Mom takes me for a ride in her kayak and I get to wear my orange Outward Hound life jacket. Jack is a baby and cries the whole time he’s in the kayak, but kayaking is my favorite thing to do! My mom is Becky Patterson and we live on Fergus. She’s on the Dog Park Committee to help us get a big, safe place where can gets lots of exercise. We love our mom because she takes us for walks, lets us sleep on the bed and gives us lots of toys and good treats, even though she makes us sit for them. Our favorite treat is something crunchy called Innova Evo, but Mom rations it because she says it’s expensive. We love it when she takes us for rides in the car to our favorite place, Petsmart. Jack and I both have special talents. I can roll a ball 15 feet across the floor with a flick of my paw, and my aim is really good! Jack can jump about 5 feet straight up in the air when he’s excited, which is most of the time. Jack and I are both very excited about the dog park and having a place to run and play without leases. We both love playing with other dogs and meeting their humans. And maybe they’ll even have an agility course. Whatever that is, it sounds fun and Mom thinks we’d both be very good at it! Bye - I gotta go play now.
