surrounding communities. During the past year, we treated 40,391 people in the Emergency Department,
performed 6,050 surgeries and delivered 1,121 babies.

treatment of disease, such as Washington County Health Partners, the American Heart Association and the
American Cancer Society, as well as numerous events and activities that make our communities more livable.
In addition, we offer educational programs, support groups and free screenings aimed at improving peoples’
overall well being. The Washington Hospital’s annual community service benefit is more than $26 million.

The Hospital’s importance, however, surpasses the health care services we provide. The Washington Hospital
is the largest employer in the county, with more than 1,800 full- and part-time employees. In addition to the
goods and services purchased by the Hospital itself, Hospital employees spend their paychecks on groceries,
clothing and services in the community. These purchases support other businesses and create jobs in the county.

Another of the Hospital’s important functions is to monitor public health issues, such as the H1N1 virus.
We collaborate with other health care providers and public health organizations in the region to identify,
control and minimize the risk these issues may have on our local communities. We also continuously update our
emergency preparedness plans to ensure that we are equipped to manage various types of disaster situations.
As is our mission, we also regularly evaluate the medical needs of the community and develop services aimed
at meeting those needs. As such, the Hospital provides a full range of services at more than 20 locations
throughout Washington and Greene counties. It was this community need that spurred the recently completed
building and expansion project, the largest in our 112-year history. The $69 million project added 135,000
square feet and two new wings to our campus. The new Surgical Services Center of Excellence, Ralph B. and
Carol J. Andy Critical Care Unit and Dr. E. Ronald and Constance Salvitti Center for Emergency Care are
equipped with state-of-the-art technology unparalleled in our region.
Furthermore, more than 350 of the region’s finest primary care and specialty physicians are affiliated with The
Washington Hospital, including many graduates of the Hospital’s Family Medicine Residency Program, one of
the oldest and most respected in the nation. The Washington Hospital is also home to an accredited School of
Nursing – with more than 4,000 alumni – as well as a School of Radiologic Technology.

We are now three years into our “Service Excellence” journey and I am proud to report that we have made
significant progress towards meeting our goals. We have a renewed focus on quality of care and safety for all
patients, and our employees, management and physicians are all dedicated to making the Hospital experience
as comfortable and safe as possible for all patients.
This was a challenging year financially for hospitals in our region and across the state, The Washington Hospital
included. We were confronted with shrinking reimbursements and a deepening recession. However, we are
confident that the changes we implemented, coupled with your continued support will propel us through
these difficult times and enable us to remain the Hospital of choice for patients, physicians and employees.

Fulfilling Our Promise to the Community
Building on Our Promise CAPITAL CAMPAIGN DONORS

last year. We thank them, and all the generous donors, who helped us raise $10.9 million for the Building on Our Promise campaign.
hen The Washington Hospital opened its new critical care unit, emergency department and surgical
services center in March, patients and families were greeted by state-of-the-art technology, larger operating
rooms, patient rooms and family waiting areas.
The three-year, $69 million building project added 135,000 square feet and two new wings to the Hospital’s
main campus in Washington.
“We are not only responding to an increase in the number of local residents using the Hospital, but we are also
looking to the future as the ‘baby boomer’ generation begins to need more health care services,” said Hospital
President and CEO Telford W. Thomas. “This expansion will help the Hospital better meet the current demand
and allow us to reconfigure our services for greater convenience and efficiency, as well as prepare for the
future health care needs of the community.”

The new 24,000-square-foot Dr. E. Ronald and Constance Salvitti Center for Emergency Care increases the
Hospital’s number of emergency beds from 22 to 34, with an additional four to be added once the renovation
of the former emergency department is completed. The Center also has four triage rooms and two dedicated
digital radiology suites. A new physician workstation enables monitoring of all patients.
The new emergency department is also home to a state-of-the-art disaster preparedness communications
center and decontamination room.
The new Surgical Services Center of Excellence includes four additional operating rooms, bringing the Hospital
total to 10. The new operating rooms are about 200 square feet larger than the existing operating rooms and
are designed for greater efficiency and infection control. The Hospital will now have the capability to perform
10,000 surgeries annually, compared with 6,000 currently.
The new digital radiology unit in the Center will provide surgeons with the images they need instantly.

The new Center is also home to the Hospital’s Outpatient Surgery Unit (OPSU). OPSU will increase from 18
to 30 beds, including 11 “flex” beds which can be used for post-op patients if needed. And the Hospital’s PostAnesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is increasing from 11 to 14 bays, including two isolation rooms.
The new Ralph B. and Carol J. Andy Critical Care Center has 26 private patient rooms, compared with just 17 in
the former critical care unit. Eight nurses’ stations throughout the center provide visibility of all 26 rooms.
In addition to being larger, each room features state-of-the-art patient care equipment and technology – most
of which is mounted on moveable booms for easy maneuvering and less congestion – and the patient beds are
accessible from all four sides. The Center also includes wireless computer capability for the patient-care staff.
The Hospital’s Materials Management Department was relocated to a new, larger space with a two-bay loading
dock for greater efficiency.
The final phase of the project, expected to be completed by next year, includes renovations of existing space.

Hospital complete the greatest expansion project in its history. Additionally, you provided much needed
funding for many other programs such as the Children’s Therapy Center, Diabetes Education, Hospice Care,
the School of Nursing, Teen Outreach and many others. Without you, The Washington Hospital might not
be able to provide all the health care services that the people of this community need and deserve.

The Washington Hospital Auxiliary was honored for its years of service to the Hospital.
On June 25, 2009 a plaque was presented to the Auxiliary recognizing its fundraising efforts and the Hospital’s main lobby was
rededicated in its name. The Auxiliary has donated more than $4.6 million to the Hospital in its 112-history. Its most recent pledge of

2009 Distinguished Service Award.
The Washington Hospital and The Washington Hospital Foundation honored Mr. Barron “Pat” McCune, Jr. with the 2009 Distinguished
Service Award. This award recognized the commitment and generosity of Mr. McCune, both financially and with his service, to The
Washington Hospital and the Washington County community. The award was presented to him at the Foundation’s annual Evening of
Recognition, which was held at Valley Brook Country Club on May 7th.
Mr. McCune, who is President and CEO of Community Bank, was appointed to The Washington Hospital Board of Trustees in 1993,
became board chairman in 2006 and served until his retirement from the board in 2008.

More than 1,000 employees are completing their three-year commitments to the Building on Our Promise campaign. The names listed below
reflect the names of employees who contributed only to the 2008-2009 Employee Annual Campaign for support of Hospital programs.
The Washington Hospital School of Nursing alumni raised $33,300 during the 2008-09 campaign. In recent years, the annual campaign
has raised money for improvements to the student center and classrooms, purchases of new equipment and funds yearly scholarships. These

The Washington Hospital is the only hospital in the county that offers

My name is Kimberly Barale and my son, Dalton, has Autism. Dalton has been receiving services from the Children’s Therapy Center
since August 2001. He has made much progress through the years… the goals that Dalton has achieved are amazing. When Dalton first
started services he had no speech, severe fine motor skills, he didn’t eat and you could not touch him without him being upset. Today
Dalton is talking, printing his name and letters, he is coloring… and most important loves to be snuggled by people he loves. I am so

Planned Giving - Providing for the Future
To help ensure the continuation of the services of The Washington Hospital for future generations, you can establish a deferred
gift. Even for a person with modest assets, there are many ways to create his/her own lasting legacy. A few planned giving
vehicles include:
• Charitable Bequests: An excellent way to ensure that your support continues long into the future is to include The Washington
Hospital in your personal will. Some donors have bequeathed a specific dollar amount, others have bequeathed a percentage of their
estate, while still others have left specific real estate and personal property.
• Charitable Gift Annuities: A gift annuity provides several benefits to you: You increase your lifetime income by a guaranteed
amount, earn a higher percentage rate than on most investments (depending on your age), receive a valuable tax deduction, and
you enjoy the personal satisfaction of making a donation during your lifetime.
• Life Insurance Policies: By naming the Hospital as beneficiary and assigning ownership of the policy to the Hospital, you can get
valuable income tax charitable deductions, and this type of gift won’t reduce your current income. You can transfer the ownership
of an insurance policy to the Hospital without the legal expense of preparing a will or codicil.
• Charitable Trusts: You can establish a trust that financially benefits you for your lifetime, or loved ones you have named as
beneficiaries for a specific number of years. Ultimately, the principal of the trust could pass to The Washington Hospital.
• Gifts of Real Estate: Consider deeding your property now and retaining the use and enjoyment of the property for your lifetime.
For this you would receive an immediate charitable deduction, and the value of your home would be removed from your estate.
The Washington Hospital Foundation has many resources that can assist you in your estate planning and when considering
a charitable planned gift. There are numerous articles and brochures available on various aspects of estate planning and many
planned giving vehicles. In addition, the Foundation has software to calculate the advantages/disadvantages of different options.
These calculations can be run for you or your legal/financial advisor in confidence and with no obligation. The Foundation
recommends that you consult with your attorney, accountant, or estate planner to identify the appropriate vehicle for a
deferred donation.
