SOUTH PETHERTON ta13 News Summer 2013 ta13 Welcome to the Summer issue of ta13 To quote Martha and the Vandella’s; Bowie and Jagger etc. “Summer’s here and the time is right for ”...well, for a start, hopefully no longer trudging round in six layers of clothing wearing our wellies, whilst we’re …. ‘dancin’ in the streets’ ! A bit of that there global warming wouldn’t come amiss round here. There’s lots of forthcoming outdoor events in this edition for us to involve ourselves in, so fingers crossed for a more benevolent season and please DO come and support them. This village rejoices in a long and distinguished history of community and it’s wonderful to see the Petherton Folk Fest carrying on that tradition. Last year’s day was a super event but a number of people complained that they didn’t know it was going to happen. No excuses this year. It’s on June 28th in the village square. The chance to get out and walk also highlights a local problem which isn’t terribly nice. I’ve had a ‘letter to the editor’ below which I hope will prick the conscience of any transgressor. Have a happy Summer. Tony Charman - Editor COMMUNITY Dear Editor I am not a dog owner and I do like dogs BUT I walk round South Petherton every day and am horrified by some people who seem to think that picking up dog pooh, mess, faeces (whatever you call it) and then throwing the bag into the hedge is achieving anything. I walked down Bridge Road and up to the hospital and picked up 12 bags flung into the hedge. Not just small black bags but at Front Cover photographs provided by Liz Randall ta13 1 COMMUNITY ...continued least 2 large Tesco bags (other well known stores were also used) and these take ages to degrade. Please take them home. Remember that other people enjoy the countryside and do not want to step in or have their children or grand children step in dog dirt. It is only a small number of people who give the majority of good, responsible owners a bad name, so if you are guilty please think twice about what you are doing. From a lover of our wonderful village who wants it to stay a place to enjoy. (name supplied to the editor) SOUTH PETHERTON ANNIVERSARY South Petherton marks an historic 800th anniversary this year. In 1213, two years before he signed the Magna Carta, King John granted our village the right to hold a market and fair. Distinguished author and historian, Dr Robert Dunning, told members of our local history society in March that it was one of the first in England to receive a royal charter. Present in the audience were members of the Vaux family which was already a prominent South Petherton family at the time the charter was granted. The market was held every Thursday for the next 657 years until 1870, along with a fair held each Midsummer's Day until 1752. In medieval times the right to hold markets and fairs came only from the King, and King John had a special interest in the South Petherton manor. He once owned it. South Petherton had been Crown land as far back as the pre-Conquest time of Edward The Confessor. It was the heart of an important royal estate stretching as far as Neroche and the village was home to a further six estates. Wigborough Manor, home of Robert Vaux today, was already a working farm. www.southpetherton.com ta13 2 COMMUNITY ...continued `Fair' originally meant `holy day' when villagers would gather around their local church. Buying and selling, all the fun of the fair and fund-raising opportunities for the church followed if a charter were granted. In the case of South Petherton (Pereton, as it was then known) a charter to hold a market and a fair was granted to the St John The Baptist Chapel which was located, it is thought, near Hayes End. With the rents and taxes raised, the chapel was able to retain a chaplain. A royal charter set out on which day, and in which place in the village, a fair or market was to be held, and what rent was to be paid. The King was careful, therefore, to award charters in such a way that no market or fair overlapped those of another village. South Petherton's market was a free market, and traders brought to the village many of the things people could not make for themselves. Dr Dunning suggested that it was a large market taking up lots of space at the centre of the village. The shops that face the Blake Hall today were once stalls that became permanent. `We know that King John was not the most popular of monarchs' says History Group Chairman Ted Peacock, but in fact he would leave a legacy of Merrie England in the shape of the thousands of village markets and fairs that would follow those of South Petherton.' A plaque commemorating the royal charter is to be unveiled shortly. Dr Dunning is the author of the Victoria County History For Somerset. Robert Vaux (right), a direct descendent of the Vaux family prominent in South Petherton during King John's reign, with historian, Dr Robert Dunning (centre). They are looking at a proposal for a plaque marking the 800th ta13 3 anniversary of the royal charter that our local history group hopes to unveil in the square shortly. COMMUNITY ...continued SOUTH PETHETON FOLK FESTIVAL Saturday 29 June from 10am – 6pm. Following last year’s reintroduction of a folk festival in South Petherton after a lull of 15 years, Petherton Folk Fest will take place again this year. Street performances and pub gigs will be free, there will be folk music at The David Hall from 11am till 11pm – and the day’s programme has been assembled to provide attractions for all ages. Entertainment includes folk gigs, Morris dancers, ceilidhs and clog dancing, poetry sessions, a history play, dance and music workshops - and traditional activities such as ‘clipping the church’. For children, there will be music workshops, story-telling and face painting. Plus, visitors will find an array of food and produce, and more craft stalls than last year. As last year, the Church will open for the day to offer somewhere to sit down, with ‘ploughman’s lunches’ available through lunchtime and teas into the afternoon. Headlining the day’s music will be BBC Folk Award winner Chris Wood, accompanying himself on guitar and violin. His performance is scheduled for 9pm in The David Hall with Bristol trio ‘The Home Fires’ on stage before him, starting at 5pm. (For ticket prices and how to book, please see The David Hall pages in this issue). Local group Lazibyrd are booked to open events at The David Hall with a free gig at 11am, followed by other free music sessions. On Friday 28 June the Festival will be launched with a ceilidh at The Brewer’s Arms at 8pm. The band is ‘Teasing the Cat’ with Will Antell as Caller. On the Saturday, there will be free informal music sessions at The Brewer’s, featuring ‘Bag of Rats’ for the final gig at 9pm. Details and locations of all events – too numerous to list here! - can be found at www.pethertonfolkfest.org.uk and anyone interested in booking a stall can email [email protected] or call 01460 240 340. Workshops cost £3 per person, payment on entry. A printed programme listing all attractions will be available on the day. The Blake Hall is designated as the bad weather back-up for activities in Market Square. ta13 4 www.southpetherton.com YOUNG CITIZENS YOUTH PARISH COUNCIL First of all, every member of South Petherton Youth Parish Council would like to say hello and that we hope that by the time you are reading this the weather will be much better. Here is a quick update of what we have been doing. Some of you may already know that we have democratically elected Chloe Ball to be our chairman and Mellissa Wallbridge as our secretary until our Annual General Election in May. We are also currently recruiting new members as our numbers were low. So far we have gained many new members with different skills that we hope they will be able to use and develop while on the Youth Parish Council. In December, some of us organised a Christmas get together at the youth club. It was a success. We would like to thank everyone that came and we hope you enjoyed yourself. Over the past few month Chloe and Mellissa have been attending some of the Parish Council meetings which have helped them gain even more knowledge of the village in which they live. We recently organised a Family Easter Bingo event at the youth club to help us raise money for the RSPCA. The final task that we are currently completing is a questionnaire in which we have asked young people in the village to tell us their opinion of the street lights being turned off. So far we have had a massive number of young people complete a questionnaire and we are hoping to feedback to the Parish Council soon. As a group we hope to keep everyone in the village updated regularly by writing something in the ta13 magazine. SOUTH PETHERTON BUGGY WALK Following a successful ‘trial’ buggy walk around South Petherton in April, I am now pleased to confirm that I will be leading further walks on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month. They will follow the same format as the taster – we’ll meet at approximately 9.45am, start at 10.00am and walk for about 45 minutes ta13 5 to an hour. We will start and finish at the Methodist Church in South Petherton and can then join their coffee morning afterwards for refreshments. The first walk will be on Friday 24th May 2013. YOUNG CITIZENS ...continued The walks will be on pavements and tarmac’d footpaths around South Petherton and are aimed at parents with buggies and toddlers. If toddlers are walking, the pace will be slower - at a toddlers pace. The ultimate goal is to get a buggy walk group going and to identify volunteers who will be happy to be trained to lead the walks. Training will be aimed at individuals with no prior knowledge of leading walks or physical activity session. I will deliver the training, then as a volunteer leader, you will be covered by the Ramblers Leader insurance policy to lead buggy walks. The walks aren’t onerous, the paperwork is straightforward. By then we should have a good selection of routes that leaders can use so they wouldn’t necessarily need to plan routes and risk assess them. Do please come along and join us. Cheryl Lingard Healthy Lifestyles Officer The Council Offices, Brympton Way, Yeovil, Somerset, BA20 2HT Tel: 01935 462348 SCOUTS Another busy time for the Scout Group. The Beaver Colony have made all manner of craft items, and had a visit from the PCSO. The Cubs have completed the Chef’s Badge (they had to prepare and serve a meal to an invited guest) and are currently tackling the Astronomy Badge. By the time you read this, our two Cub teams will have tackled the Centaur Hike (a competition event for Cubs from across Yeovil District) – fingers crossed for a good result. Meanwhile, between their camps and other such activities, the Scouts have been caving and have tried their hand at scuba diving, while the Explorers have celebrated their Unit's first birthday with a skittles night and a magnificent cake. We have had our share of success in competition too – not least at the District Chess and Draughts challenge, where one of our Scouts made it to the top six in the Chess; another in the Draughts competition, as well as two of our Cubs ta13 in the top six in the Cub Chess. We even won a prize in the Duck Race at Easter 6 www.southpetherton.com YOUNG CITIZENS ...continued – a fitting reward, perhaps, for the three Cubs who navigated the freezing water of Petherton Brook to free up any ducks that got stuck in the shallows! Let's hope that the Beavers will be as successful at the District Connect-4 competition, later in April. Away from all the hectic activity for the young people, we are still faced with the ever-present challenge of finding additional leaders (particularly for the 14-18 year old section) and raising the money we need to keep going. Scouting is totally dependent on raising its own income – we do not receive grants or subsidies – and that is a particularly onerous task in these straitened times. One of the main problems is, perhaps surprisingly, time. The more activities we run for the young people, the less time we have to raise the money to do them. We have a small committee who do their best to meet our needs in this way, but we desperately need more help. We don't just need money, we need ideas, and the manpower to see them through. Can you help? Please get in touch on 01460 241814 (evenings) or e-mail to [email protected] Tim Burch Group Scout Leader 1st SOUTH PETHERTON BROWNIES - SUMMER TERM We’re really hoping that, as you read this, we will working hard at watering and weeding the flower beds in the car park. You might think that this is because Brownies love a bit of hard work (I’m not going to ratify or revoke that image!) but really it’s because we are hoping the weather has improved and is giving us some much needed sunshine. We’ve had a fantastic time working with Over Stratton Gardening Club learning how to develop our green fingers and can’t wait to see what our seedlings will grow into with a bit more love, care, and sunshine. We took a trip round Lufton Nursery to see what it should look like and are hoping to do as well on a smaller scale (the Gardening Club also discovered some new tips at the Nursery proving you never stop learning). By popular demand we have also started work on our Riders badge, discovering how to care for horses and ponies (a bit different to caring for pets before ta13 Christmas) and can’t wait to get in the saddle at Drakes Farm. We are going to 7 use this experience to write some poems to share with Burnworthy House YOUNG CITIZENS ...continued residents. Last time we visited in March they shared with us some poems they wrote about their schools days so it will be nice to reciprocate. And of course, as it’s the summer we hope to get out and about as much as we can. Keep your eye on our website to see what adventures we get up to: http://1stsouthpethertonbrownies.weebly.com SUNSHINE MORNING NURSERY NEWS We have had great fun last term introducing the idea of the 'Big Bang' to the children at Nursery. The children thoroughly enjoyed acting out being gases, moving around faster and faster until the BIG BANG and then forming planets and stars. We sang lots of new songs about the planets which helped us remember their names. The children made rockets of varying sizes and imagined going off into space! Despite the icy weather, we managed to make it to Burnworthy one morning to sing to the residents. This was enjoyed by everyone and we are looking forward to going again this term. The residents were entertained by our action songs. They taught us a new song and sang a few to us too. We have also been practising washing our hands and brushing teeth. Tracey came to visit from 'Emphasis' and did a couple of trims as well as showing us some pictures of head lice (rather large prints so they looked prehistoric!). During the final week of term, most of our parents were able to join us for part of a morning. The children showed them a range of activities and served refreshments. We now have a website and are on facebook, so look us up! www.sunshinemorningnursery.co.uk HASSOCKMOOR CHILDCARE AND OUT OF SCHOOL CLUB We have had a very busy term and had lots of fun in the rain and the snow. In January we read Goldilocks and the Three Bears and talked about healthy breakfasts, making porridge and toast and learning how to spread butter and pour milk. Baby Bear arrived at Hassockmoor and everyone took turns looking ta13 after him. So far he has been to London, flown in a helicopter, played under the 8 www.southpetherton.com YOUNG CITIZENS ...continued bed, played with two rabbits, stayed in the Post Office, been to a Grandad’s house where there is a train track in the garden and helped to look after a new baby. During February we studied the British Isles, learning the capital cities and while we were in England we drew pictures of Big Ben, built Buckingham Palace from huge boxes and talked about the London Eye. We moved on to Wales for St David’s Day and wore leeks and daffodils, made Welsh cakes, painted dragons and made Welsh ladies. Whilst in Ireland we did a treasure hunt in the wild garden to find the pot of gold, we danced to traditional Irish music, did potato printing and made a four leaf clover collage. We moved on to Scotland and painted flags and played with the Loch Ness monster in the paddling pool. We have started a postcard collection and the children have asked all their friends and family to send us postcards. Red Nose Day saw us dressing in Pyjamas to raise money for Children in Need. We also had a Gruffalo day when the children dressed up as characters from the books. We also celebrated Pancake Day, Mother’s Day and Easter and hoped for the start of Spring when we planted our seeds. COMMUNITY PRIDE Over recent years, a small group (6 people) of South Petherton in Bloom members (SPIB) have made a dramatic difference to the appearance of our Community, with colourful flower baskets and planters, which are changed twice a year. SPIB has been supported financially by most members of the business community (who have contributed towards the cost of the displays outside their premises) and by the Parish Council. However, during last year (the wettest for over a century) it was noticed that grass and weeds were left growing on pavements and roads. The days when each community had its own road sweeper have long gone, and our Lengthsman’s hours have been reduced due to County and District Council financial cutbacks. Could we make a plea that this year, all householders/business owners take a short time to clear the pavement and gutter in front of their properties. If your neighbour is unable to do their own (due to age, health or time available) please be community-minded and give a hand to clear theirs. This would make a real difference to the streets of South Petherton. We are fortunate, and should be proud, to live in such an attractive area. Let us all work together to make it even more attractive. We realise that everyone pays Council Tax and will ask “Why don’t THEY do it?”. The truth is that, unless taxes are raised, Councils (who are receiving less and less funding from Central Government) will not be able to spend money on ta13 11 the appearance of our streets. It is up to us to accept this challenge and keep South Petherton and its environs clean and tidy. CLUBS AND ASSOCIATIONS OVER STRATTON GARDENING CLUB A late start to spring in the garden….. Last year’s summer was – in a word – horrid. This year it’s been a late start to spring. On the positive side, you have had an extra long break from mowing the lawn! “They” say if spring is late to start, gardens catch up by July so let’s look forward to plenty of cheerful garden colour this summer. Over Stratton Gardening Club members are busy sowing seeds and propagating plants so that there will be lots to sell at their plant stall at Over Stratton Garden Party on the afternoon of Saturday 15th June. A ‘must’ for your diary – the Garden Party is fun for all the family in the delightful gardens of Stratton House; and a chance to buy good plants for your own garden. This summer the club’s programme of activities continues with a film by the RSPB about ‘Reintroducing cranes to Somerset’ on Monday 20th May; a visit to the gardens at Moorland Cottage, South Petherton on Thursday 13th June; a visit to Farndon Thatch garden at Stockland on Thursday 11th July; and a talk by the ever-popular Neil Lovesey on ‘Herbs’ on Monday 15th July. Visits to the open gardens have to be booked beforehand. Talks are held at the village hall (7.30pm start, visitors welcome £1.50 on the door). Enquiries 01460 241626. Happy gardening! SOUTH PETHERTON COMBINED ARTS - Art Group This term the Art Group has had two excellent demonstrations by professional artists using pastel and watercolours respectively. Members were shown how to use each medium employing different techniques and effects. The Group is working towards the Annual Exhibition which this year will take place on the late May Bank Holiday Weekend 24th - 27th May 2013. The Private View for the Exhibition will be on Thursday 23rd May at 7.00 pm. Tickets for the Private View are £4 each and include refreshments on the evening, and are available from Art Group Members and N & D News in South Petherton. Our next term commences in September 2013 meeting in the Blake Hall, South Petherton with regular Thursday meetings. Ron Kenway ta13 14 www.southpetherton.com We are all looking forward to the second Petherton Folk Fest on Saturday 29 June! Petherton Arts Trust has booked a whole day of folk music, beginning at the Hall at 11am. There will be several free gigs – including local band Lazibyrd – until 5pm, when The Home Fires will start the evening’s run-up to BBC Folk Award winner Chris Wood’s appearance at 9pm. Please see the Listings below for ticket prices and how to book. Chris Wood Contact Theatre’s production CountyBoy’s Struggle, performed at the Hall in March, was an unusual venture in many ways. The David Hall hosted the lively hip-hop show, but passed the accompanying workshop with performer Maxwell Golden on to Stanchester Academy. The David Hall also coached a small team of local “young promoters” in how to run an event. The team gained new skills from the experience. Shaun (13), always quick to volunteer for any task at a computer, said: “What I remember best was writing the piece for the website.” After producing a text following guidance from The David Hall’s press officer Penny Bool, the youngsters took it for posting to webmaster Tony Charman, who showed them how websites are built. On the night, Micha (12) demonstrated her team skills, helping volunteers to get the venue ready and liaising with hip-hop poet Maxwell and technician Rob. “Most of all, I remember collecting the feedback and seeing what people thought of the show,” she commented. “We were delighted to offer this opportunity. Working with the students was a new challenge and very refreshing,” said Kate Vanovitch, who is a Board member of Petherton Arts Trust and ran the classes with TakeArt’s Sarah Peterkin. We are enjoying a terrific season of sell-out gigs and look forward to seeing you at the Hall for a future event – or two! – and hope you will also join us for ta13 13 Peterton Folk Fest. Do you live in South Petherton or nearby and currently work from home? There are a small band of individuals who spend their days tapping away on keyboards in the comfort of their own home. Maybe your company encourages home-working, or you run an online retail business or provide freelance consultancy? We thought it might be nice to bring these people together for an informal meeting over coffee in Provenders. It would not be a selling opportunity or have any formal networking aims i.e. it’s not a business club. The aim would simply be to get to know other people based locally, who work from home, a scheduled time for some ‘home-office’ chat. If you are interested and would like to be informed of future meetings, please email: [email protected] Route 60+ Training Course. 16 July 10am – 1pm at The David Hall This innovative course for senior drivers covers not only the way in which vehicles have changed over the years, but also how we can update our own driving habits and skills.
