The Wild Kingdom
with Goodwrench
In the land of the few, there
are many. In the land of
the blind, the sounds are
loudest, louder.
People went there and
heard things...
On Saturday mornings,
Jawbone brews up a
cohesive mix of maudlin
Americana, sixties psych,
hardcore country, toothless
blues, bright bluegrass,
jazz jewels, obscure prog,
American & British folk, International, old-timey string
band music, and a soaring
touch of gospel soul.
Poised at the cusp between
Saturday and Sunday,
Goodwrench mixes, mangles,
perverts, and purees (or just
plays) electronic sounds of all
types. A work in progress or
a piece of work? You decide.
Temporary Village /
Old, Weird America
with Art Crimes
10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
We begin with a vast
and mysterious trove of
international music with
contextual details whenever
possible. We assert that
accordions maintain their
inherent charm, regardless
of nationality. The journey
ends with a trip home
to Old, Weird America,
exhuming the earliest days
of America’s recording
industry: country, blues,
proto-jazz, hokum, gospel,
and visionary sermons.
Firebunker with Cythoth
2 – 6 p.m.
A Japanese monster
movie comes to life on the
airwaves. Cythoth smashes
through Tokyo Tower and
into your radio. Be warned,
it’s not pretty.
For The Record
with Dave Emory
6 – 7 p.m.
David Emory is a political
researcher and broadcaster
whose California-based
radio programs are heard on
a regular basis in the United
States, Canada, and Europe.
Peaksville Asylum,
Fifth Ward with Anthony Fremont
7 – 10 p.m.
Check into the Peaksville
Asylum for experimental psych treatments,
trazadrone neurotransmissions, sublime dulcet tones
and electro- shock-rock
therapy. Harboring sound
for the unsound.
Justin Outlier
10 p.m. – 2 a.m.
From the distant horizon
emerges a cloud of smoke.
As dusk nears, the cloud
comes closer and coalesces
into a form. The form is
different than anything
seen before. It hangs out
in studio and plays sounds
not heard before. It is Justin
Outlier. Nothing more,
nothing less.
Turn It Up
with Mr. Lucky
10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Explore the connections
between reggae riddims,
funk, breakbeats, hip-hop,
turntablist trickery, dub,
trip hop, and jazz. Just
remember to tune in and
Turn It Up.
What is Grawer?
with Grawer
2 – 6 p.m.
People on the street stop me
and ask...”What the 4#@k is
Grawer? I don’t get it,” they
say...”I don’t understand.”
I hang and shake my head...
words don’t describe... one
might suggest listening,
but that’s not for everyone.
Maybe you’re in the mainlined Japanese psych mood...
maybe drums and spaced
out horns yer trip... maybe
Midwest rock freakouts?
Approach the Grawer with an
open mind, and a clean pipe.
Dave Emory
Archives
6 – 7 p.m.
Rebroadcasts of material
from the extensive audio
archives of Dave Emory.
Girl Version
with Maybelline
7 – 10 p.m.
Radio energy’s a weird and
wonderful thing. Unfortunately, the testosterone
involved seems to over
shadow things sometimes...
listening to the Girl Version
is an approach to sound that
subscribes to an entirely different chemical... that of the
female intuition maybe? One
will never truly understand
the intelligence, and true
taste in heavy avant, but
deeply hooked radio. Beats
of the highest caliber... jazz
of the people, soul from
the unusually inspired and
unheard... and rock that does
far more than rock.
Natasha
10 p.m. – 2 a.m.
Every Friday night Natasha
invites you to experience
a wild diversity of music
smoothed with a velvet
touch. Tune in for a
chocolate martini treat
with an aura of mint powder
and gunsmoke. Relax, but
stay awake.
The Norman Bates
Memorial Soundtrack
Show with
Robert Emmett
9 a.m. – Noon
Hear The Good, the Bad, and
the Ugly in music from stage
& screen. Listen to what
you watch. Music from
silent films, yesterday’s
classics and today’s latest
releases. Listen and obey!
Psychoacoustic
Soundclash with Nozmo King
3 – 6 p.m.
There is only accident and
appropriation. A dynamic of
patterns and scenery, echoing the taste of tall buildings.
Moving soundscapes creating
warmth in small spaces. Close
your eyes and smell the pavement of your imagination.
Someone once said, “We are
not free, only at large”.
Guy Montag
6 – 9 p.m.
Guy Montag is an open book
with empty pages. Saturday
evening scrawls & unscripted
sounds. Strange selections
& unknown directions. The
plot thickens...
No Way Out with Zero Gravity
9 p.m. – Midnight
Good evening, and welcome
aboard the 9 p.m. flight of
No Way Out, with your pilot
Zero Gravity. Real guitars
and drums will be used, so
expect turbulence. In the
event of punk, power pop
and rock & roll, please place
the speakers to your ears and
strap firmly to your head.
During our final approach,

milder pop and country, in
which case your radio may be
used as a flotation device.

NY Underground, 1978–1988. Immersions into hip hop,

DNA, Steve Buscemi, ESG, Jim Jarmusch, Afrika Bambaata,
Glenn Branca, Suicide, Basquiat...
Organs of all shapes and sizes flaunting knobs you pull for
exquisite organ pleasures. An intensely gripping exploration into organ apparatuses & the piping hot sounds they
produce. A perversely hands on religious exhortation
in extreme organ fixations with unbelievably versatile
applications! Are you ready for an organ solo?
Presented by Art Crimes
Longtime music critic and author Greil Marcus chats with
Art Crimes on four consecutive Thursdays throughout
Mayhem 2008. Marcus first introduced the idea of the Old,
Weird America in his book Invisible Republic (1997), which
dug deep into Bob Dylan’s “Basement Tapes.” The phrase
has a life of its own now, becoming folklore itself, much
like the traditional songs that are at its core... and it’s also
the name of a weekly show here on KFJC. This week, we
take a quick tour with Greil at the wheel.

Mayhem 11

Acid Burns Los Altos Hills, Part 1
Presented by Goodwrench
The Roland TB-303 Bassline was a product introduced
in 1982 as a bass line generator to accompany budding
guitar heroes or one-man-band types. It was a dismal
failure at its intended purpose, and thus languished in
pawn shops and junk stores until rediscovered by some
teenaged house producers in Chicago in the late ‘80s. The
303, when tweaked, is capable of generating a panoply
of otherworldly squelches and burbles, unique in palette,
that wreak dance floor devastation. Thus was born “Acid
House”, “Acid Techno”, or just “Acid”. This special will
trace the rise of Acid House in Chicago, its explosion in
England in 1988, and its subsequent mutation in Europe
and the States.
Mayhem 13
Tuesday, 10 a.m.–3 p.m.
Applying the Principles of the
Jazz Dialectic: An Aural History of
the Vandermark 5
Presented by Thurston Hunger & Daryl Licht
Through his efforts as a performer, composer, leader, and
organizer, Ken Vandermark has been working to expand the
possibilities of jazz/improvised music for over 20 years. To
that end, the Vandermark 5 has been his flagship ensemble
since 1997. During that time, varying line-ups of the Vandermark 5 have produced 14 releases, consistently delivering diverse sets of contemporary jazz, with material that
strikes an almost perfect balance between composition and
improvisation and which integrates a wide range of sonic
elements from hard bop and blistering free jazz to slamming funk and searing out-rock. We present an overview of
the history and recordings of this influential and legendary
ensemble, which, now in their second decade, continues to
evolve and create compelling contemporary jazz.
Tuesday, 10 p.m.–Wednesday, 2 a.m.

Dobrudja, and Thrace. Bulgarian music is unique and
so are the types of instruments used, and the complexities of the rhythms, such as 9/8, 11/16 and 17/16. Some
examples of bands from outside Bulgaria and around
the world who have recorded their own adaptations of
this music will also be featured, as well as a few tracks
recorded at the Koprivshtitsa Folk Festival in Bulgaria in
1971 and 1981. This show will also pay a long-overdue

that’s what happened. Leiber and Stoller formed their
relationship as teenagers in Los Angeles. Their common
love was the blues. This special will highlight the nascent

Cassette Culture Underground,
Volume 2: The Japanese Edition
Presented by Nozmo King
From the late ‘70s to the late ‘80s, cassettes were king.
The cassette culture was in part an extension of the mail
art movement, and owed much to the DIY ethic. Before
digital media, anyone with a cheap, portable 4-track
could easily record a cassette and get it out quickly.
Twenty years on from the height of its popularity,
homemade cassettes are coming back into vogue. In
this edition, guest curator Mason Jones and Nozmo King
explore the Japanese scene from past to present, playing
obscure, vintage cassettes (and some vinyl).
Saturday, 8 p.m.–Midnight
Tales from the 8-Second Orchestra,

hard to uncover yet more music featuring this unique
and versatile analogue keyboard instrument. Its heyday
might have been the ‘60s and ‘70s, but many contemporary artists have rediscovered its charms and put it to
good use in a wide range of genres. The holy grail for your
hosts is the hit we’ve all heard many times which turns
out to be laden with mellotron, but there will be rarities,
oddities, and obscurities a-plenty too. And no mellotron
show could be complete without an occasional slice of
stately prog.

Thursday, 7–10 p.m.
Musical Barber’s Poles:
The Shepard Scales Special
Presented by Cujo
Shepard scales are an auditory illusion. With careful
synthesizing of tones first crafted by Roger Shepard at bell
labs in the ‘60s, the listener hears a sound that appears
to be infinitely rising (or descending). Experiments with
Shepard scales and its related phenomena have led to
fascinating discoveries about the brain and about different cultures. Some protean examples of Shepard scales
existed well before the ‘60s (Bach may have delved into
them), but with the advent of synthesizers, more assured
implementation of Shepard scales have crept their way
into modern music, most notably with the late James
Tenney’s piece “For Ann (rising)”.
Mayhem 30
Friday, 8 p.m.–Midnight
With Malice Aforethought
