Learning for Integration (LFI) is a non-profit organisation founded in 2012 in Finland.
The mission of Learning for Integration ry is to promote the learning of languages
and cultural sensitivity of migrant, immigrant and refugee children and youth in Finland and other Nordic countries in order to facilitate their integration into the new
culture and the development of a multicultural society. In addition, our purpose is to
support especially Swedish learning in Finland. Learning the languages of the target
country is always a challenging process, and we wish to support immigrants in this
mission, as well as in achieving a socially balanced life in their new home countries.

Through our Mother Tongue Playgroups for Pre-School Children we encourage strong
family and cultural connections with the country of origin.
One of the activities we wish to promote is the writing of holiday cards or letters to
grandparents or family in the country of origin.

about the project
Children learn a second language (Finnish) more easily when their first language
is very strong. The aim of the playgroups is to bring together pre-school children (3
to 7 years old) from the same culture to help them strengthen their mother tongue
and the links with the culture of origin through stimulating activities, such as playing
games, singing, reading stories, drawing, painting and crafting. Differences and
similarities between the mother tongue and the Finnish language will also be
highlighted through language games.
The motivation behind these activities is to help children build a positive concept
of ethnic identity by making them feel proud of their mother tongue and heritage,
to encourge strong family and cultural connections with the country of origin and
to build a strong foundation for the learning of a second language.
The groups are run by volunteer parents with a background in early-childhood
education and pedagody. The first group that started in the autumn of 2012 is a
group for Romanian speaking-children living in Finland.
Learning for integration ry has vast experience in creating different kinds of
teaching material. We aim to produce freely downloadable material for both
teachers, students and parents to use in class or in their free time. Some of this
material will be used in the playgroups, groups for teenagers, and the language
exchange.

Playgroup for kids
The Zmeişorii playgroup is our first pilot project. The playgroup is targeted at preschools Romanian children, living in Finland in a monolingual or bilingual family.
The group that we organizwed in the autumn of 2012 had 25 children, aged from
3 to 6. The purpose of the playgroup is to help children speak corretly their mother
tongue and familiarize them with Romanian traditions.
The mother tongue is the foundation for learning new languages. These children
learn at the same time Finnish or English and it is very important for them to have an
educational environment where they can speak Romanian and get professional
support for their language development. We believe that the best way of achiving
this is through play. Through games, dances, songs and arts and crafts the children
will be able to explore their own culture and reinforce their sense of self identity
and belonging.
The children are aged from 3 to 6 and attend the group two times a month. One
meeting lasts 2 hours. We start the meeting with a circle time where we said our
names, play games, sing songs and introduce a new topic. After that the children
can choose to go and do one of the focused activities that had been prepared
in advance. These activities are arts and crafts, language games, math games,
drawing or just free play. The parents are encourgaed to join the games and be
an active part of the project. Our main objectives are:
• help children take part in the playgroup by joining independently the sessions
( age 3 to 4)
• familiarize them with the Romanian alphabet, help them recognize and write
some letters (age 4 to 6)
• support the active language learning by introducing new words, reading
stories and verbalizing actions (age 3 to 6)
• get children familiar with Romanian songs and rhymes (age 3 to 6)
• help children explore their country’s history and culture (age 3 to 6)
• identify possible grammar mistakes and correct them (age 3 to 6)
• creation of material (flashcards, prompts) that parents can use at home, to
support the learning of the mother tongue. Disseminating a list of ressources
available onlne and in print.

Data de 8.12 va fi Ziua Porţilor Deschise. Părinţii şi alţi membri ai familei sunt
invitaţi să rămână împreună cu copiii, dacă doresc.
Scopul grupului de joacă este să aducă împreună copii români cu vârste
cuprinse între 3 şi 6 ani, provenind din familii monolingve sau bilingve, care
locuiesc în Finlanda, pentru a-i ajuta să îşi îmbogăţească vocabularul în limba
română şi cunoştinţele despre cultura şi tradiţiile româneşti, prin activităţi
stimulante ca de exemplu jocuri, cântece, poveşti, lucru manual, pictură sau
desen. Grupul este organizat de părinţi voluntari cu experienţă în lucrul cu
copiii preşcolari şi pedagogie. Părinţii sunt bineveniţi să se implice în activităţile
grupului. Puteţi sprijini activitatea grupului prin plata taxei de membru LFI (20
de euro). Fondurile sunt folosite exclusiv pentru achiziţionarea de materiale
educative în limba română pentru cei mici.

The Activate Your Language initiative aims to run Finnish Language Cafés for immigrant
parents, in connection with the playgroups, and to run awareness campaigns on
the importance of speaking the languages of the new home country, for immigrants
working in English, thus preventing their social exclusion.
The Activate Your Language - Finnish Language Café for immigrant pqrents initiative
aims to organize Finnish language learning groups in parallel with the mother tongue
playgroups for immigrant kids. Our aim is to help parents activate their passive
language skills acquired while living in Finland, and to cover topics that allow parents
to support the integration of their child: vocabulary needed in connection with the
kindergarten or healthcare services, small talk topics useful for creating social contacts
with Finnish parents or neighbours, reading of announcements for activites that might
be interesting for their kids.

The Support Your Kid’s Learning initiative aims to run a series of awareness campaigns
aimed at parents and kindergartens and to create a set of resources on how parents
can get involved and support their child’s learning of the second language outside
kindergarten and school.
We aim to create a list of online and in-print resources that will include:
• Tips for Reading in a Second Language
• Suggested Reading Material in collaboration with libraries
• Suggested Language Resources
• Finnish T.V. Programs
• Online Ressources
• Music Resources
• Activities and Events in Finnish aimed at Kids: sport and music groups, fairs, etc
We believe that parents who support the learning of the second language of their child
have better chances of becoming better integrated themselves - they will get to know
the stories and songs of the country they are living in, and will be able to foster and
create social contacts in an easier way, thus preventing their social exclusion.
Kindergatens, schools and other insitutions working with immigrant parents should be
encouraged to disseminate information on ressources available and work together
for a better linguistic integration of immigrant children, and at the same time of their
parents.
