CHIEF FEATURES
THUNDERSTORM
Thunderstorms activity has been observed at isolated places over Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha,
Meghalaya, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh on many days; over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim,
Madhya Maharashtra on a few days; and over Bihar, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Telangana,
Chhattisgarh, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema, North Interior Karnataka and Kerala on
one or two days during the week.
FOG
Dense to very dense fog occurred at isolated pockets over north Rajasthan on 26th and over Punjab
on 29th February.
MINIMUM TEMPERATURES
Minimum temperatures were markedly/appreciably above normal over Gangetic West Bengal,
Madhya Maharashtra, Telangana on many days; over Jharkhand, Uttarakhand and Marathawada on
a few days; and over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Odisha, Bihar, Punjab, Himachal
Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, East Madhya Pradesh, Konkan & Goa, Chhattisgarh and North Interior
Karnataka on one or two days of the week.
MAXIMUM TEMPERATURES
Maximum temperatures were markedly/appreciably above normal over Punjab, Himachal Pradesh,
Jammu & Kashmir, West Rajasthan on almost all the days; over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal &
Sikkim, West Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, and Gujarat State on many
days; over East Uttar Pradesh on a few days; and over northeastern States, Jharkhand, Bihar,
Madhya Pradesh, Konkan & Goa and Marathawada on one or two days of the week.
METEOROLOGICAL ANALYSIS







Last week’s trough in lower level easterlies over Equatorial Indian Ocean & adjoining south
Andaman Sea lay centred over Equatorial Indian Ocean & adjoining central parts of south Bay of
Bengal on 25th and persisted over the same area on 26th. It lay centred over Equatorial Indian
Ocean & southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka coast on 27th & 28th and became less marked on
29th Feb.
Last week’s upper air cyclonic circulation over Lakshadweep area & neighbourhood extending
upto 0.9 km above mean sea level persisted on 25th and become less marked thereafter.
A trough extended from Assam to Gangetic West Bengal with embedded upper air cyclonic
circulation extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level over Gangetic West Bengal & adjoining
Jharkhand on 25th and became less marked on 26th.
An upper air cyclonic circulation lay centred over Vidarbha and adjoining Marathawada &
Telangana extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 25th. It was seen as an embedded
upper air cyclonic circulation over southwest Madhya Pradesh & neighbourhood in the above
trough on 26th and became less marked on 27th.
An upper air cyclonic circulation extending upto 1.5 km above mean sea level lay centred over
Vidarbha and adjoining Marathawada & Telangana on 25th and became less marked thereafter.
A western disturbance as a trough in mid-tropospheric westerlies ran roughly long Long. 55.0°E
and Lat. north of 30.0°N on 25th; roughly along Long. 62.0°E and north of Lat. 35.0°N on 26th and
moved away east-northeastwards on 27th.
A trough in the lower level easterlies ran from North Interior Karnataka to East Rajasthan across
Madhya Maharashtra & West Madhya Pradesh and extended upto 0.9 km above mean sea level
on 25th & 26th; from South Interior Karnataka to southwest Madhya Pradesh across North Interior






Karnataka & Madhya Maharashtra on 27th; from south Madhya Maharashtra to West Madhya
Pradesh on 28th; from southern parts of Konkan & Goa to West Madhya Pradesh across Madhya
Maharashtra on 29th Feb; from southern parts of Konkan & Goa to south Gujarat on 1st March. It
lay centred as an upper air cyclonic circulation over Gujarat & adjoining south Rajasthan and
extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 2nd March.
An upper air cyclonic circulation lay centred over eastern parts of Assam & neighbourhood
extending upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 26th and over Assam & Meghalaya &
neighbourhood extending upto 3.1 km above mean sea level on 28th. It lay centred over
Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura and neighbourhood on 29th, over Tripura & neighborhood
on 1st March and became less marked on 2nd.
An upper air cyclonic circulation lay centred over south Bihar & neighbourhood extending upto
2.1 km above mean sea level on 27th and became less marked on 28th.
A feeble western disturbance as a trough in mid-tropospheric westerlies ran roughly along Long.
62.0° E and north of 28.0° N on 28th, roughly along Long. 72.0°E and north of 35.0°N on 29th
Feb. and moved away east-northeastwards thereafter.
Another western disturbance as an upper air cyclonic circulation lay centred over western parts
of Iran & neighbourhood extending upto mid-tropospheric levels on 29th; over eastern parts of
Iran & neighbourhood extended upto 9.6 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft over the
same region on 1st March. It lay centred over eastern parts of Iran & adjoining Afghanistan
extended upto 9.6 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft over the same region on 2 nd.
An upper air cyclonic circulation lay centred over northwest Rajasthan & neighbourhood
extending upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 29th Feb. and become less marked on 1st
March.
An upper air cyclonic circulation lay centred over north Chhattisgarh & neighbourhood and
extended upto 0.9 km above mean sea level on 1st March and over Jharkhand & adjoining
Gangetic West Bengal & north Odisha extended upto 0.9 km above mean sea level on 2 nd.
RAINFALL
 Sub-divisionwise daily distribution of realised rainfall and minimum temperature is shown in
Table-1.
 Sub-divisionwise weekly rainfall is shown in Annexure-1.
Rainfall During The Week (For the week ending on 2 March, 2016)
Rainfall was excess/normal in 12, deficient/scanty in 13 and no rain in 11 out of 36 meteorological
sub-divisions. (All India Actual: 3.7 mm, Normal: 5.6 mm and Departure: -35%).
Cumulative Seasonal Rainfall (1 January to 29 February, 2016)
Rainfall was excess/normal in 6, deficient/scanty in 27 and no rain in 3 out of 36 meteorological
sub-divisions. (All India Actual: 17.9 mm, Normal: 41.4 mm and Departure: -57%).
The sub-division wise weekly and seasonal rainfall distribution is presented in Fig.1 and Fig.2.
Statewise distribution of number of districts with excess, normal, deficient, scanty and no rainfall is
shown in Table-2.
A comparative data of cumulative seasonal rainfall during the corresponding period in the last five
years is given in Table-3.
METEOROLOGICAL ANALYSIS AS ON 3 MARCH 2016


A western disturbance as an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over west Afghanistan & adjoining
Iran and extends upto 12.4 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft over the same region.
An induced upper air cyclonic circulation lies over central Pakistan & adjoining west Rajasthan
and extends upto 3.1 km above mean sea level.
