Welcome All to Arts in August!
On behalf of the citizens of the City of Cleveland, it is a pleasure to welcome you to
Arts in August. This month long celebration showcases the arts, culture and
diversity which make Cleveland a great city and Tremont a great neighborhood.
Cleveland is a colorful tapestry of people and cultures and offers 36 unique
neighborhoods with more than 77 different cultural groups. Each is diverse and
complete with a rich cultural heritage. And our city prides itself on the outstanding
services we provide in every neighborhood and all of the amenities we offer our
residents and visitors alike.
Arts and culture can be found in every corner of our city. From the famous
Playhouse Square Theater District to University Circle, Detroit Shoreway, and
especially here in Tremont, our City is full of unique venues, dining, gardens and
specialty stores.
Once again, welcome! Enjoy all that Arts in August has to offer and share in the
experiences that are uniquely Cleveland.
Sincerely,
Mayor Frank G. Jackson
Good evening friend.
This season of Arts in August marks 10 years of providing
Cleveland’s best and freshest artists and performances to
you here in Lincoln Park in Tremont.
The goal for this month long festival has always been to fully deploy the
picnic blanket theory of how our City and communities get stronger and more
compassionate.
How many times do audiences come to enjoy Cleveland Public Theatre’s STEP
program or catch a newly choreographed work by Verb Ballets, and inadvertently
meet someone new or share close space with an old friend just met.
In our first year we called this picnic blanketing: when the corners of your space
intersect with someone else’s. The result is of course great theater, music, dance
enjoyed; but also a Cleveland where differences blur and the common DNA we share
is most apparent.
There are dozens of people and agencies who make tonight tonight. We could not
present this to you without the support and love of Mayor Frank G. Jackson, Tremont
West Development Corporation, and LAND Studio. Specifically Cory Riordan and
Michelle Davis from Tremont West have accomplished Herculean feats and do so
always with a smile. Nora Romanoff of LAND Studio is, has, and will always be the
light on the path for this three thousand six hundred day journey. Truly.
This year also marked Raymond Bobgan’s introduction to the Arts in August leadership
council. His creativity, thoughtfulness, and intuition have been amazing. We cannot
wait to seek his guiding hand and energy for next season.
The sponsors you see listed are the real deal. From financial support, to constructive
advice, to in kind generosity, to a portion of Tuesday’s lunch earnings from so many of
the finest restaurants within walking distance, these performances are their gift to all
of us. Thank you.
And of course huge thanks goes to each and everyone of our artists and technicians
and artistic directors and organization leaders of the troupes and companies
performing this month. They are world class and without parallel.
Tonight there will be people who walked here, people who biked here, people
who just moved in and people who remember when Robert DeNiro walked
through this grass during Deerhunter breaks. There will be people who dined at
St Augustine Hunger Center across the street and people who made reservations
in the neighborhood to eat tonight. In essence, to your left and right is Cleveland
- beautiful, unrelenting gritty refined quiet brilliant unfiltered classy dynamic
Cleveland.
Enjoy it. We do this every single year for you.
To the next three thousand six hundred days.
Joe Cimperman

An original play inspired by J.M. Barrie’s classic Peter Pan
Created by: The Teens of STEP 12
Executive Artistic Director Raymond Bobgan is proud to announce Neverland, a new play
developed by Cleveland Public Theatre’s celebrated Student Theatre Enrichment Program (STEP)
- Cleveland’s longest-running arts and job training program for urban teens.
A retelling of J.M. Barrie’s classic Peter Pan, created and performed by the 2012 STEP ensemble,
Neverland explores imagination, growing up and taking flight. This family-friendly show follows
a group of lost youth who roam the city in search of themselves. Propelled by the power of
storytelling and one brave girl, they embark on an imaginative journey confronting pirates,
beguiling mermaids and their own potential for transformation. Packed with original music,
dance and exciting action, Neverland is about the challenging call to find a place in the world.
Neverland is the culmination of an eight week program. Working in close collaboration with
CPT Teaching Artists, teenagers met for five hours per day, five days per week to develop every
element of the play. Using Barrie’s writings as a starting point, CPT Teaching Artists, lead by
Education Director Chris Seibert, have guided these extraordinary young people on a journey
of self-discovery and awareness through the dramatic arts. During the eight weeks, students
receive top-notch training from CPT Teaching Artists in theatre arts and in creative expression as
well as valuable job training skills such as timeliness, following a project from beginning to end
and teamwork. Come and experience the power and creativity of Cleveland’s youth!

MorrisonDance was founded in 1997 and is directed by Sarah Morrison, a 2009 recipient of the Ohio Arts
Council Individual Excellence Award. Morrison is a choreographer, performer, educator and behavioral
researcher, who has presented innovative and acclaimed presentations such as LEAPING INTO THE NET!,
the world’s first online simulcast of a modern dance concert, and ERIE SIRENS, a site specific performance
held at sunset on the Cleveland city shore of Lake Erie with sand-sculptures created by Scott Radke. Since
incorporating as a non-profit company in May 2002, MorrisonDance continues to push the boundaries of
dance by exploring unusual presentation and rehearsal venues, cross-disciplinary approaches to creation
and education, and new creative marriages with other artistic media, science, nature, and technology.
Through this exploration, MorrisonDance has been able to discover the power of dance as a language
for communication and expression in a wide array of settings, while continuing to cultivate the value of
more traditional dance presentations in conventional spaces. The company has been recognized through
proclamations for their contribution to the artistic community through original works such as THE MAD
MASK MAKER OF MAIGH EO, INSIDE, RENDEZVOUS, and THE CITY IS OUR PLAYGROUND. MorrisonDance has
performed extensively in the Cleveland area at venues including Playhouse Square and Cleveland Public
Theatre, and has been presented by DanceNow/NYC at the Joyce SoHo and City Center and Joe’s Pub at
Public Theatre in New York City. They have been supported by Cuyahoga Arts and Culture, the Ohio Arts
Council and Neighborhood Connections, a program of the Cleveland Foundation.
The strength of MorrisonDance comes from performers trained in a variety of techniques ranging from
modern dance to physical theater, from ballet to yoga, and everything in between. Synergistically
highlighting the strengths of these varied styles, the company is greater than the sum of its many parts.
Additional strength is gained through their unique partnerships with organizations such as BrainMaster and
NASA, allowing them to explore new marriages between art and science.
The mission of MorrisonDance is to inspire and cultivate public awareness of the art of dance through
performances and cross-disciplinary collaborations. To provide, promote, and participate in educational
and outreach programs that increase the awareness of dance and that encourage community cultural and
artistic endeavors; to research and develop integrated and cross-disciplinary teaching and presentation
methods for dance; and to create opportunities for artists and performers of various media, augmenting
the accessibility of dance as a performing art.

Antaeus Dance is a professional modern dance company based in Cleveland, OH. Founding Director Joan
Meggitt launched the Company in 2001 with an ambitious tour of Estonia, where the company gave public
performances across the country and held master residencies in dance, improvisation and composition at
several universities. The tour was immediately followed by a world-premiere evening-length performance in
Cleveland. The evening-length format has become a signature of Antaeus Dance, which has premiered five such
danceworks – each one with an original score commissioned from award-winning local composers, compelling
set designs custom built by well-known regional artists and, most recently, evocative films by Cleveland film
makers. The Company has brought the work of more than 50 choreographers, dance artists, composers, visual
artists and film makers to stages in Cleveland and beyond.
Antaeus Dance’s work is transformative, reaching beyond the traditional repertory concert to fulfill a larger
vision, exploring the intersection of individual experience and collective expression. The choreography
combines physical stamina, self-disciplined quiet and stillness, and a deep awareness of the interplay between
strength and vulnerability. The Company’s striking performances challenge audiences to examine the world
around them and their relationship to it. Antaeus Dance boasts an impressive repertory of original danceworks
by Director Joan Meggitt, and a distinctive collection of premiere dances by the Artistic Staff. The Company
teaches and rehearses in Cleveland’s historic Tremont neighborhood in Pilgrim Congregational Church. Antaeus
Dance is also in residence at Allegheny College, where they hold the annual Allegheny Summer Dance Intensive
as well as an annual fall residency.

destination for the arts. In 2012-13, Verb Ballets welcomes the return of contemporary choreographers
Antonio Brown and Chung-Fu Chang as well as Verb Ballets’ Rehearsal Director and choreographer,

Our mission is to bring professional quality opera to a broader audience, by
making it accessible to people from all communities and backgrounds, through
performances in a variety of venues, many unconventional and intimate, at
affordable prices, with an emphasis on realistic acting as well as beautiful singing.
It is our belief that many people, if given the opportunity, will appreciate the
beauty of opera and be enriched by its transformative quality.
We also wish to provide performance opportunities for professional singers and
musicians who have chosen to make Northeast Ohio their home, thus encouraging
the growth and well being of cultural life in this area.
