The Aggie Express - Beal City Schools
The Aggie Express A publication of the Beal City Public Schools www.bealcityschools.net December, 2012 Elementary GOLD Medalists of the Month FRONT ROW (L-R) Macy Johnston (Kdg.) daughter of Jason and Jaclyn Johnston, Cayden Smith (1st grade) son of Rick and Ann Smith, Mattie Seger (2nd grade) daughter of Matthew and Jessica Seger, Chase Owens (3rd grade) son of Kent and Jenna Owens. BACK ROW (L-R) Joe Clark (6th grade) son of Donald and Janee Clark, Seth Schafer (5th grade) son of Mike and Denise Schafer, and Shae Lau (4th grade) daughter of Karl Lau and April Schafer. These seven students were chosen by their grade teachers as the September Gold Medalists of the Month. They not only showed great effort and enthusiasm in the classroom, but they also demonstrated positive character traits and were model students. For being selected for this award, each student received a certificate, a pencil, and a gold medal. Congratulations to our Outstanding Students!! A HUGE THANK YOU Beal City Public Schools would like to take this opportunity to thank the voters of the Beal City community for their continued support and commitment to the district and our students and staff. Our 18 mill non-homestead millage proposal passed by a fairly good margin. In rough numbers the proposal (18 mill non-homestead millage renewal and Headlee override was about 60% to 40 %) as reported by the Morning Sun. While the state of Michigan struggles to fully fund k-12 schools, our community has done it’s part by passing this proposal. It will now be four years until the school district will need to come back to the voters to renew the 18 mill non-homestead millege. Also a big congratulations to the four candidates who filled the four Board of Education seats, new comer Ron Neyer and the incumbents Denise McBride, Jane Finnerty, and Kari Rojas. Your support of and commitment to our community and school is welcomed and appreciated. Thank You for your service. Again, a HUGE Thank You to the community. The Beal City community and school district are a united partner in the education of our children just as our Mission Statement says: Beal City Public Schools, in harmony with home and community, will educate our children in a positive environment that meets individual needs and goals in order that all students successfully function in an everchanging global society. Christmas Outreach Mayes Elementary students and staff will again be collecting items for the Isabella County Christmas Outreach program, to benefit needy families in our community. Students should have brought home a list of new toys, toiletries, and school supplies as suggested items needed to fill our classroom Christmas stockings. Please do not wrap these items. This is strictly a voluntary program. If you are able to donate items, please send them to school by Thursday morning, December 6th. We appreciate your generosity at this special time of year. Parent Teacher Conferences – GREAT TURNOUT!! We had an incredible turnout on Thursday, November 8th for Parent-Teacher Conferences this year. Over 95% of Mayes Elementary students’ parents met with their teachers. Many parents also did some early holiday shopping while visiting the Book Fair. Our sincere appreciation is extended to the PTA for providing the Book Fair to our students and their families. 2nd Annual PTA Apple Pie Fundraiser SUCCESS! The PTA organized the second annual Beal City PTA Apple Pie Fundraiser this fall and it was a HUGE success! A total of 825 Dutch apple pies were sold, with a profit of $3,600. A special thank you to all of the volunteers who made the fundraiser possible! Your support was amazing. This year we made extra pies and those went FAST! Make sure you order early next year so you don’t miss out on these delicious pies that are a perfect (and easy) addition for the holidays. Holiday Program Mark your calendars now for the annual Mayes Elementary Holiday Program to be held on Thursday, December 20th at 1:00 p.m. in the small gym. The Senior Citizens Reception will take place in the gym before the program at 12:30 p.m. All families and community members are invited to attend this spectacular songfest! Santa’s Shop Our elementary PTA is again sponsoring Santa’s Shop which takes place on Friday, December 14. Students are allowed to take a “shopping trip” where secret purchases can be made for family members and friends. The PTA will send more information home with students when it comes near. Please remember that students are not required to participate by purchasing gifts. This event does not generate any profit for the PTA; it is strictly for the benefit of the children. Winter Clothing It’s that time of year again! Now that colder temperatures have finally arrived, we wanted to remind parents of our “Seasonal Clothing” policy, in the Parent/Student Handbook. When the temperature is 41 – 50 degrees, coats or sweatshirts are necessary. In addition, at 40 degrees or below, boots, gloves and hats are required for all grades, and students in K-4th grade have to wear snowpants. If a student comes to school unprepared for going outside, he/she will receive a warning the first time, and remain on the blacktop. If cold weather clothing is forgotten more than one time, students will have to stand against the wall or serve lunch detention. At all times, best judgment in accordance with weather conditions is expected. Veteran's Day It was great to see and honor our Veterans at our annual Veteran's Day Program. Cindi Gigowski, Megan McBride and Richard Gruss were our guest speakers this year. We are fortunate that they were willing to share their stories with us and we appreciate their service. "Thank you" to the Mt. Pleasant VFW Honor Guard and our always fabulous Beal City Band. We also would like to thank Senator Judy Emmons and Representative Kevin Cotter for participating. JH YIG Nine students from the Jr. High School traveled to Lansing for a 3-day Youth in Government conference. In early fall, members wrote bills in preparation for the conference. In Lansing, approximately 700 students from all over Michigan came together to debate their bills in a mock legislature simulation at our State capitol. Although Beal City High School has participated in YIG for many years, this is the first time a Jr. High group has attended. Participants: Caitlyn Matthews, Ariel Salter, Stephanie Ley, Hannah Schafer, Madeline Fike, Kyle Hauger, Easton Straus, Alec Whitehead, and Nick Freeze Board Briefs The following was approved at a regular board meeting on November 19, 2012: - - - General Fund payments of $282,448.04, Hot Lunch payments of $15,966.14, Athletic Fund payments of $13,214.50, Debt Retirement 2002 payments of $23,506.38, and Debt Retirement 2004 of $50,181.25. The following coaching recommendation through PCMI as presented: Tim Taylor – 7th Grade Boys Basketball Coach. The 1st reading of the Neola New, Revised, Replacement Policies as presented. Project PALS A lot of Pilgrims, Native Americans, and even turkeys were spotted roaming the halls of Mayes Elementary School on Monday, November 19th! Our second grade students and their high school mentors presented their annual Project PALS Thanksgiving program and dinner. Thanks to the food service staff for a delicious homecooked turkey dinner and the high school PALS for helping with serving the food. They served over 200 family members and students. All of this would not be possible without the outstanding efforts of the following Beal City teachers: Mrs. Rachel Leff-Ewing, Mrs. Carrie Smith and Ms. Jessi Spry. Beal City Varsity football players and cheerleaders read to kids…. Stressing the importance of being great role models for the elementary age students in our community, the Beal City Varsity Football players and cheerleaders gave their time on Friday, October 5, during the Homecoming festivities to read to the Kindergartens, First, Second, Third and Fourth grade students at St. Joseph the Worker and Mayes Elementary. They stressed the importance of reading & education, being in school, being a good role model and setting good examples. They also enjoyed a little treat. This is a good way for the players and cheerleaders to give back and thank their community for all the support they give to Beal City Football. Students at St. Joseph and Mayes Elementary enjoy being read to. 4.00 GPA Bo Carrick Manisha Cole Monica David Jonathan Rau Olivia Rau Sam Schafer Mitchell Schumacher Larissa Schwerin Corey Yuncker Kaitlynn Frayre Shelby Klumpp Anna Reihl Ty Rollin Addie Schumacher Chloe Steffke Nicholas Ward Zina Bellinger Kaitlyn Gottschalk Nicole Gross Cortni Hauck Jacob Horsley Maxwell Horsley Zachary Natzel Nicholas Pung Emily Steffke William Chilman Tucker Gross Paige Lorenz Alexia Lynch Jacob Matthews Rachel Pung Sarah Reihl Apollo Schafer Eric Schafer Ethan Schafer Emily Schripsema Erica Sheahan Hannah Steffke Gr. 12 12 12 12 12 12 12 12 12 11 11 11 11 11 11 11 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 3.5 -3.99 GPA Andrew Clare Charles Clark Elton Clark Juliann Handziak Michaela Holland Mikayla Jones Margaret Kolb Megan Ley Rachael Lorenz Rebecca Master Joseph Rau Nicholas Reeves Gr. 12 12 12 12 12 12 12 12 12 12 12 12 3.5 -3.99 GPA Cont.
