CALL TO ORDER
Board President Beneta Burt called to order the May 3, 2016, regular meeting of
the Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by
Dillan Blake Evans, an honor roll student at Northwest IB Middle School.
He plays the trumpet in the school’s
marching band, the Sound of Precision. This year, he and his friend,
Jahari Bell, entered the District Reading Fair where they shared their love
of reading and were awarded first
place in their category. Dillan is an
inductee into the National Junior Honor Society. He serves as an usher at New
Jerusalem Church. After attending an engineering camp at Mississippi State University last summer, Dillan decided to attend college at MSU and study mechanical engineering.
PRAYER OF INVOCATION
The Prayer of Invocation was given by Rev.
Terry Porter, pastor of Terry Grove Missionary
Baptist Church in Terry, Mississippi. A lifelong resident of Hinds County, Rev. Porter
completed his master’s degree at Jackson State
University and his doctorate at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. He is the Department Chair of Counseling, Rehabilitation
and Psychometric Services within the College
of Education and Human Development at JSU. Rev. Porter is a member of 100
Black Men of Jackson and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He is
married with one daughter. His family lives in Byram. His favorite scripture is
Romans 8:18: For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy
to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
Board member Dr. Otha Burton presented certificates of appreciation to Dillan
Blake Evans and Rev. Terry Porter.

JPS BOARD MEETINGS:
JPS SCORES INCREASE IN THIRD GRADE STATE TESTING
The Board of Trustees generally
holds two regular meetings per
month.
The overall District passing rate increased from 72 percent in spring 2015
to 79 percent for the first administration of the Third Grade Summative
Reading Assessment in JPS. While 32 out of 38 elementary schools
showed growth, at least half of JPS elementary schools exceeded the percent passing goal of 80 percent. At three elementary schools—Casey, Davis, and McWillie—100 percent of third graders passed this assessment.

be held on June 7 and 21, 2016,
at 5:30 p.m. in the Board Meeting

GRADUATION RATES INCREASE
Overall, JPS experienced a two percent increase in the graduation rate. The
increase would be 2.4 percent if the now closed Bailey High School was
not counted in these results. The following schools posted the most significant gains:





Provine High increased 5.2%
Jim Hill High increased 3.3%
Wingfield High increased 3.2%
Callaway High increased 2.8%
Murrah High increased 2.6%
DEDICATED READING PARTNERS & VOLUNTEERS RECOGNIZED
JPS Partners in Education Director Thea Faulkner presented outstanding partners and volunteers who have made contributions to reading initiatives in Jackson Public Schools.
Teen Trendsetters is a reading mentoring program that pairs secondary student mentors with early elementary mentees. Outstanding mentors from each
program were recognized with the Teen Trendsetters Excellence Award.

and Alignment Jackson to deliver this support to 16 JPS schools.

WHITTEN STUDENTS RANK IN STATE AND NATION ON SPANISH
TEST
JPS Chief Academic Officer Chinelo Evans introduced Whitten Middle School
Spanish teacher Nefertari Moses who presented the accomplishments of several
first-year Spanish students on the National Spanish Examination Contest. Four
bilingual students and three non-bilingual students achieved or exceeded the proficiency and fluency scores to earn top rakings in the state as well as national
honors.

The Jim Hill Lady Tigers powerlifting team won the 2015-2016 Class III
Championship. The team’s head coach, Stanley Spell, was named the Girls Powerlifting Coach of the Year for 2015-2016 by the Mississippi Association of

The Murrah High School Speech and Debate team defeated St. Andrews Episcopal School on a 2-1 decision in the final round of Policy Debate to capture the
State Championship in that event and won second-place overall in debate events
at the tournament. Team sponsor Micah Everson was also named the 2015-2016
Speech and Debate Coach of the Year.
