This is an exciting time for me, your new General Manager, starting to write my first piece about what is happening at your head office. As I write this column I have four and a half weeks service to Jersey Australia under my belt and in that time I have met a passionate Board of Directors who govern your organisation. They oversee the affairs of Jersey Australia and a team of dedicated staff who manage your memberships, your registrations, your classifications and the promotion of the breed we’re dedicated to; Jersey. While many farms have offices its unlikely most members have 4.5 staff in that office which is what it takes for Jersey Australia to manage 500+ memberships, classifications on 191 farms, 12,000 registrations per annum, a team of eleven classifiers, competitions, promotion and often many member calls a day. I will be doing my best over the first 12 months to understand the business fully and to improve further the value we provide members. I have spent most of my career in the dairy industry but this is my first step into a breed society and how pedigrees etc. operate. I’ve worked in membership organisations before and being out and about to meet members is a vital part of the role. So far I have been to the Easter Show in Sydney and the Autumn Jersey Fair in Gippsland later in April I’ll be at a Club event in Colac and then at the Jersey Society AGM in May. Please let me know when your clubs are meeting or Agricultural Shows are taking place so that I can meet more members, face to face. During the March Board meeting a number of recommendations / motions were passed and the draw was made for the early bird membership prize. The draw was won by BR & LR Smethurst who own the Lerida Park Jersey herd in Princetown, South West Victoria and they have won $200 worth of Jersey Australia services. Elsewhere the Board:- • • request members send in their 102 and 103 dif files a new rule 6.6.1 be added to the book of rules which states:- In the case of homozygous polled animals the registration paper should include the letters PP and the relevant reliability (ie 93%) in parentheses, provided the results of this polled test is supplied to Jersey Australia • agreed that members that participate in the Improved Herd research project have their two year olds classified will receive a rebate applicable to the individual project. • agreed that the July/August 2016 Jersey Journal front cover be offered to the owners of the winner of the Great Australian Challenge to show a photo of their winning cow. I’m looking forward to my next piece in the July/August Journal and reporting back on the AGM and a club meeting in Western Victoria. New Jersey Australia General Manager Mike Weise sees massive potential for Australian Jerseys. Mike Weise says Jerseys have a good story to tell metro consumers looking for healthy products from visually attractive cows. But as well as a marketable backstory, Jerseys have the feed-conversion efficiency which make them best business decision in an era of component-based payments. Mike began his new role in March with plans to meet Jersey breeders across the states and territories. He feels honoured to have the role at JA. “I’m really looking forward to following the Jersey Australia mission and growing the business,” he says. “We have massive potential. “I’d love to see the percentage of Jerseys in the national herd increase by one or two or three per cent. “I’d like to see people choosing new herds making good business decisions by choosing Jerseys.” Wide experience values education Mike Weise was born in Britain’s secondlargest city Birmingham, but says he always wanted to get out of the city and work on a farm. He studied general agriculture and agricultural economics at Aberystwyth in West Wales, and then went to work on dairy farms in England and Ireland. He realised the value of Jerseys when he milked a 30-cow herd in his second farm job in Sussex, one hour south-east of London. He ended up managing a herd at an agricultural college, which led to a role as a lecturer in agriculture. As well as teaching in Britain, Mike consulted to universities in Romania, the Czech Republic, Lithuania and Cameroon. He first came to Australia in an exchange program swapping his job in the UK with an extension officer from the University of 8 Jersey Journal – May-June 2016 Melbourne who worked around Maffra and Sale in Gippsland. “When my wife and three-month-old daughter left the UK in January 1993, it was probably 35 Farenhiet (2°C)” Mike remembers. “When they arrived in Melbourne and it was 35 degrees Celsius, we were thermally shocked.” The Weises returned to the UK after the 12-month exchange, but Mike then received details of jobs in Australia with encouragement to “have a crack and apply for this”. “We couldn’t settle in the UK,” he says. By February 98, the family was back in Victoria where Mike had taken up a role as an agricultural extension specialist managing the Target 10 program. The Target 10 Dairy Project had begun in 1992 with stake holders from the dairy industry, the Victorian Department of Natrual Rresources and Environment, and the University of Melbourne. It had state and regional steering committees headed by farmers. Target 10 extended information about grazing management, business, nutrition, soils, fertilisers and natural resource management through courses, discussion groups, newsletters, benchmarking, field days, focus farms, demonstrations and media. Mike says he used his education skills and dairy knowledge to manage a team of ten staff across Victoria. The Weise family settled in Warrnambool where Mike went on to roles including CEO of the dairy development agency, WestVic Dairy. His team revitalised young people’s interest in farming careers. He consulted with clients including Agrifood Skills Australia. He also became chairman of Victoria’s South West Institute of TAFE, where he led a board of nine directors through major policy changes in vocational training. Mike also led a project in 2010 which engaged 1000 stakeholders to develop the first regional strategic growth plan for the $4billion Western Victorian dairy industry. From 2010 to 2012, he edited a regional newspaper with a circulation of 18,000. He is also the CEO of the regional development consulting company Client Victoria Pty Ltd. Motto of continuous improvement Mike expects that his work with Jersey Australia will continue to stress the values of extension and education that began way back in Birmingham. “One of my dad’s mottos which I always like was try to go to bed less stupid than you woke up,” Mike says. “I try to live by that – continuous improvement is an important value in anybody’s life.” Mike says Jersey breeders have to be alert to the opportunities in coming decades as world demand for food increases. He says Jerseys with their feed-conversion efficiency will be uniquely placed to benefit from this. “We can tell a story there about the health benefits of Jerseys, and that could be a big advantage to us,” he says. Mike recalls hearing about the marketing strategy of a European food brand sold as “coming from farms with no barbed wire”. He likens this to car designers who build vehicles with alloy wheels and fins that only have benefits above 180kph. “Why would you have that?” he asks. “People buy things for fashion not function.” But Jerseys win on both accounts Mike also plays the cello Mike plays the cello in his free time. He says he bought it to Australia because it’s a good way to get away from the daily deadlines and managing teams. It also a great way to meet people from other walks of life. He’s played since he was eight, except for a six-year period in his youth when he sold his instrument to buy a motor bike. He returned to the cello with a bequest from his grandmother. When he settled in Victoria with his wife and three daughters, he joined the Warrnambool Symphony Orchestra. He was then invited to play in string quartets, which perform at weddings most weekends. He laughs that Jerseys might produce better components if they had string quartets playing in the dairy, but says he’s never seen any science to back that up. ARTWORK: Hayley Menzies, PHOTOs: Bradley Cullen words: Lee-Ann Monks Good bulls, anywhere, anytime Aaron Thomas (Morningside Jerseys, South Gippsland, Victoria) loves breeding Jerseys. And the Good Bulls App gives him the freedom to look up bulls anytime, anywhere. He says the app takes a lot of the hard work out of researching bulls, and it has also opened his mind to bulls he may otherwise not have considered. “The other day I was waiting for a slow milker to milk out so while I waited I used the app on my phone to look up bulls to improve milking speed. I was surprised to find a few suitable bulls that I hadn’t thought about,” Aaron said. Aaron dairies with Paul and Lisa Mumford (Gelbeado Park) running his 220-cow spring calving herd on the Mumford’s second property, Albert River Farm. A fan of the printed version of the Good Bulls Guide, Aaron likes the added functions of app such as being able to customise searches and save short lists as well as the ability to use it whenever he wants. 16 Jersey Journal – May-June 2016 “Breeding is a passion for me, so whenever I’m around the herd I’m thinking about ways to improve the cows through breeding. I love the fact that I can use the app when I’m down in the paddock, while I’m bringing the cows up to the dairy or even during milking. Its times like this when the cows are in front of me that I think about how I might breed them.” For added convenience, the app will work without internet or mobile reception once it has been installed and the latest ABV release downloaded. With detailed ABVs of more than 20,000 bulls, the app can sort, filter, short list and export bulls that match a defined breeding objective. Aaron uses the Type Weighted Index (TWI) as the starting point for sire selection. “The TWI gives me the balance I’m looking for between profit and type. Profit is our priority, but we also need cows with the functional type to have long, healthy and productive lives in our farming system.” The type traits of most importance to Aaron are udders (teat placement and udder depth) and feed and legs. “The herd is pretty sound in terms of udders, but it’s very important that we maintain that. The farm traditionally gets quite wet in the winter so we can’t afford to have cows with deep udders that drag through the mud. The farm is quite steep in places which I believe makes feet and legs important too.” Aaron assembled his herd by purchasing cows from three different farms so one of his breeding aims is to improve the overall consistency of the herd with a corrective mating program. “I select a team of bulls to use each year, and then our breeding advisor, Brad Aitken runs the herd through his program to provide individual matings.” “Because I’m so interested in breeding, Brad and I have had some robust discussions over the years. I expect those discussions to get even more vigorous now that the Good Bulls App puts information at our fingertips,” Aaron said. Jersey Journal – May-June 2016 27 words: Michael Porteus The Gears don’t breed for the show ring, but they do train some of their heifers to be led. Genetic Recovery is returning ‘lost’ breeding lines to the registered Australian Jersey herd while it helps breeders understand their herd’s background and achieve higher production, better heifer sales and show-ring honours. How Genetic Recovery boosts Jersey herd value BARRY and April Gear are using Genetic Recovery to enable registration of all their Jerseys to increase the value of their herd, help with breeding decisions, and track the evolution of the cattle at their Totara stud. The Gears farmed in northern Victoria in 2001 after they came to Australia from New Zealand 20 years ago. They shifted down to 170km south west of Melbourne in 2004, and set up their Totara stud at Swan Marsh, between Colac and Camperdown. They now milk 224 Jerseys and 10 28 Jersey Journal – May-June 2016 crossbreeds on the 73ha milking area on the 94ha farm which has black clay and peat soils. The Gears last year produced 96,500kg of milk solids. They supply Australian Consolidated Milk (ACM). They lease a further 93ha next to their home farm. They grow perennial pastures and turnips. The stud has not bought silage for more than two years, but does purchase grain to feed each milker 1.5 tonnes a year. Barry had milked both Jerseys and Friesians in thirty years on farms in New Zealand. But he says it was a commercial decision to buy Jerseys when he and April were setting up their current herd in Victoria. “At that stage, we could buy two Jerseys for the price of one Friesian,” Barry says. “It would take a good Friesian to beat two average Jerseys. “Another reason was that I could pick a Jersey cow up without going to get the tractor if she was down, and I could pick the calves up.” Barry jokes that Jerseys handle heat better because they are further away from the sun. He also laughs that smart Jerseys have been know to work out how to “beat the computers” in automated dairies so they can get a second feed of grain. Barry and April say they founded their Jersey herd with registered calves bought from Jan Davidson and whatever other cattle they could get their hands on. They began using Jersey Australia’s Genetic Recovery system nine years ago, when only 60 of their 140 Jerseys were registered. Now some of their herd are third-generation offspring of GR Jerseys. But they also milk older Jerseys in their ten-a-side herringbone dairy at Totara. The Gears agree that longevity in their milkers gives them plenty of room to make culling decisions to improve their herd’s production, health, temperament and fertility. “They get two chances,” Barry says. “If they don’t get in-calf with the spring lot, and they miss out in the autumn, they are on the truck. “We’ve got cows here 12 and 13 years old. If they weren’t producing well and didn’t get in calf, they wouldn’t be there. “If they don’t front up, they ship out.” Totara stays away from the expense of genomic or progeny-tested sires. Barry says they mainly use New Zealand bulls with 30,000 to 100,000 daughters. He uses Danish genetics as an outcross for herd health. Barry says he likes to breed a ‘good commercial cow’ with good fertility and the ability to forage. “We probably don’t have any show cows in the herd,” Barry says. “We are here as a business.” They have been in ACM’s premium band for low cell counts for more than five years, which Barry says is due to both genetics and farm practices. He says the farm can get very wet, and this suits Jerseys. “I think Jerseys are very much undervalued, particularly in northern Victoria,” he says. “There are more Jerseys in the south-west, where they handle the heat better.” Barry and April Gear take a selfie with their Jerseys. Barry thinks his Jerseys reflect the research findings that they are 23 per cent better at converting feed to milk per kilo of bodyweight. However, he thinks that both Jersey and Holstein breeders in Australia are relying too much on north American breeding strategies, which can leave them with cows that are not really suited to the climate in Victoria. Three stages lead to GR APRIL Gear says she worked closely with people from the Jersey Australia headquarters to document three stages of Jersey breeding behind each cow that went through the Genetic Recovery procedure. This procedure starts with the breeder contacting one of the Jersey Australia Genetic Recovery Officers whose phone numbers are listed on page three of the Jersey Journal. These officers start with the females that are to be listed in the GR3 column of the Genetic Recovery Scheme form. They evaluate these cows to ensure that they can be considered to be of ‘true Jersey type’. The mating of a GR3 cow with a registered Jersey sire produces a daughter at GR Stage 2. A GR2 cow and a registered Jersey sire produce a Jersey at GR Stage 1. When this mates with a registered Jersey, it produces a registered Jersey cow. A female Jersey can be entered into the system provided enough on-farm records are available for its ancestors – whether they are dead or alive – to satisfy the requirements of the GR system. April says her stud uses the Easy Dairy computer program, which records four generations of details about cows in the Totara herd. She was able to send information from Easy Dairy to Jersey Australia to meet some of the requirements for Genetic Recovery. “Easy Dairy is just one of the programs that is available,” April says. “If there’s a registered animal in the background, then it provides the herd book number. “Some of them we started at GR3. Some of them we had more information for, and we were able to register them as GR2s, or whatever each animal was.” April says she liaised with staff at Jersey Australia, and was able to send information through in batches to step through the processes for a number of cows. She says there have been a number of advantages stemming from Totara’s use of the Genetic Recovery scheme. Being able to supply paperwork enabled higher payments when the stud sold heifers for export to China or Pakistan. April says the GR information is also “a very good decision-making tool”. It adds to the job satisfaction of being a breeder. “It’s an interest to be able to look at an animal and see who the dam and sire were, and who the grandparents were, and whatever else,” April says. “But sometimes you don’t know the parents, and when you look it up and you get a surprise when you remember.” Barry says that using Genetic Recovery has also enabled the Gears to meet and discuss Jerseys with other breeders with similar interests. April says Totara doesn’t use genomics or embryo transplants, but it pretty fussy about identifying animals when they are born. The Gears don’t want to show cows, but have entered their local on-farm challenge. They didn’t win any ribbons, but April was happy to hear the judge remark on the quality of the udders across their herd. “Showing’s not our thing, but it’s important to us that they have good udders,” she says. April leads a Jersey calf at Okato primary school in the 1950s. Fiftieth birthday celebrations for Jersey Club IN the 50 years since the Mount Compass Jersey Cattle Club was formed, there have been big changes in the dairy industry. Founding member, former president and life member Colin Blacker, Hope Forest, said the club helped support its members through these changes, including milk marketing, component pricing, artificial breeding and pasture improvement. He said it was a space for learning, friendship and, of course, a respect for the Jersey cow. “The quality of the cow you see today is just special,” he said. In that half century, the club was active in holding the Mount Compass Field Day, the Jersey Select Twilight Sale, and a heifer competition. President Jason Steinbourne said the main activity of the club today was the heifer competition, which began in 1969. Secretary Rhonda Watkins, Yundi, who has held the role for half the club’s lifetime, said today’s membership included three descendants of those at the original meeting, and some families had their fourth generation involved in the club.
