Raising the Bar
Spring bars: The crucial connection between watch and strap

Spring bars are those springy metal rods that
connect a watch bracelet or strap to the case. Relatively simple and inexpensive—costs vary from a
few cents to about $75 for an 18k bar—they nonetheless are essential: Good quality spring bars
keep the watch from falling off the customer’s
wrist. Using the wrong ones may cause the watch
strap to disconnect, force the bars to break prematurely, or make it impossible for the next repair
person to remove them without damaging the
watch case.
Consequently, it’s important to choose the
right spring bar for the job, beginning with the
correct diameter and length. Always use the largest possible diameter that will work with the strap
or bracelet. Common sizes are 1.3 mm, 1.5 mm,
and 1.8 mm, although spring bars for Rolex and
other high end brands are sometimes as big as
2 mm. To determine the needed length, measure
the space between the watch-case lugs with a
digital caliper, micrometer, or similar device. A spring bar that is
labeled as 15 mm should fit lugs with 15 mm between them. (The
spring bar may be much larger when expanded, but when fully
compressed it will be slightly smaller than the labeled size.)
In addition to the correct length and diameter, you need to
choose the correct type of spring bar. As shown here, there are
several from which to choose.
