of Crystal
Try your hand at glassblowing
At Kosta and Orrefors you can spend 30 minutes trying your
hand at blowing a bowl, a glass or a pot – all with knowledgeable glassblowers providing assistance. After only two hours,
the glass will have cooled and be ready to be picked up. From
age 6. The activity is to be booked in advance.

inspires and awakens the desire to discover – among both young
and old. Book your experience at www.glasriket.se, where you can

Ages. Try medieval crafts and activities like archery, games,
leatherwork, tin casting and painting coats of arms. Diligent
visitors are dubbed knights – by a real mounted knight!
A guest of the King of the Forest
In the Kingdom of Crystal’s two elk parks, you will get
really close to the King of the Forest. Take part in an elk

Any complaints must be communicated to the landlord as soon as possible The land-lord must be informed
of any complaints as soon as possible, and no later 3 days
after the date of arrival. Any faults which occur during
your stay should be reported immediately, to ensure
that the landlord has the opportunity to rectify them.
You have the right to transfer your reservation to
another person and the landlord must accept him/her
unless there are special grounds for refusal. In such an
event, you must inform the farm of the change before
the date of entry and a re-booking cost of SEK 250
will be debited.
What are my obligations?
You must take good care of the cottage/apartment, and
follow all applicable rules, regulations and instructions.
You are personally responsible for any damage to the
property and its contents caused by your own
negligence or that of a member of your party.
You must not use the cottage/apartment for any
purpose other that what was agreed to at the time of the
booking (normally leisure use) and you must not allow
any persons over and above the number specified in
the booking to stay overnight in the cottage/apartment
or its grounds. Upon agreement with the landlord and
when permission is given by the correct authorities,
the number of people staying at the cottage/apartment
may exceed that which was indicated at the time of
agreement. The landlord in this case reserves the right
to charge extra for these persons.
Lost keys must be replaced by the guest at the cost
of SEK 200.-.
Cleaning and bed linen
rent includes cleaning, breakfast,
bed linen and towels.
Self-catering: guests bring their own bed linen
or rent bed linen from the landlord. Guests are
responsible for cleaning the cottage/apartment. Some
farms require a deposit which is repayable when the
guests vacate the premises. If the premises have not
been sufficiently well cleaned, the deposit is withheld.
In the event that no deposit has been made, the
landlord has the right to invoice the actual cost of the
cleaning (minimum SEK 300).
Bed & Breakfast:
War, natural disasters, strikes etc.
Either party has the right to withdraw from the
rental agreement in the event that the cottage/
apartment cannot be made available as a result
of acts of war, natural disasters, labour-market
conflicts, protracted interruption to water and
electricity supplies, fire, or other similar major
occurrences which neither party could have fore-seen
or influenced. Under such circumstances, the landlord is obliged to reimburse what you may have paid
with a reduction for the benefit of any use of the
cottage/apartment cottage/apartment.
What happens in the event of disagreement?
Inform your landlord of any complaints. Remember
that your chances of obtaining redress may diminish
if you delay in making your complaint. If you
cannot agree you should first contact the Stay on a
Farm service in writing, who will review and take
measures if the farm does not live up to its axstandard and the organisation’s requirements. If you
are still not satisfied, you may appeal to The Swedish
National Board of Consumer Rights (Allmänna
Reklamationsnämnden). The Board is made up of an
impartial chairman and a number of representatives
of travel organisations and consumers.
Things to consider before booking
All houses, rooms
and apart-ments connected to Stay on a Farm
are unique and live up to the organisation’s
high minimum requirement standards. The
classings will help you to see which standard you
will be getting. The standard in a holiday home
is fre-quently different from that of your own
home. Furnishing may include modern as well as
older furniture. Dinner sets and cutlery may not
always match. Wardrobe space and storage facilities
may be limited. The bedrooms are often small
and do not always have doors for privacy. Water
heaters may be smaller than in a permanent residence, which may mean that, for example, showers
can-not be used by several persons in succession. It is
wise to ask about the details of the living space at the
time of booking.
The countryside: You must expect flies, wasps and
other insects in and around holiday homes. Nor can
the landlord be held responsible for any cobwebs
indoors or ants on the property. In the event of major
insect infestations, the landlord should be contacted
immediately so that the fault can be rectified. The
landlord cannot be held responsible for any activities
outside the boundaries of the property, including road
works etc.
Errors and omissions excepted.

Signs of spring are best seen out in nature:
murmuring meltwater streams and coltsfoot

forest is a goldmine for filling the larder with berries and
mushrooms. The winter is mystical and exciting: whose tracks
are those in the snow?
Follow the year on the farm with intensive spring sowing, hay
harvests in the summer heat and expectations ahead of the autumn

‘Hovturnén’ (the Hoof Tour) headed by
Wille Crafoord is now a much-loved
tradition in northwestern Skåne. In summer
2011 he brought, no less than, Mikael
Ramel, Anna Bergendahl, Gunhild Carling
and musicians Marika Willstedt, Jonas
Sjöblom and Olle Linder – and the
dependable Haflinger horses of course!

Mandala painting
Mandala painting is a way of focusing on the
‘here and now’. It is almost a meditative experience with a strong feeling of presence. And
everyone can paint mandala!
Mandala is Sanskrit for circle. The circle can be filled
in or coloured freehand or with different geometric
shapes or symbols. As you start from the middle, it
automatically develops concentration. Mandala painting
can also be seen as a window to the inside. It can be a
way of opening up the creative flow and lead to greater
self-knowledge.

under the guidance of Nina Skoland who
is a diplomaed mandala instructor. At the
end of days filled with mandala painting
and home-cooked food, a good night’s sleep
awaits in the guest rooms.
“Mandala is partly about finding your part in the
big picture – and you can do that so well on Enghult’s
veranda”, says Nina.
“You don’t need any previous skill to join the course”,
explains Anna Ekströmer, BpL host at Enghult, ‘painting freehand based on a few set geometric shapes
makes it easier to be creative if you are inexperienced.’

Pilgrimages in Småland
Put on your walking boots and set off
along the newly opened pilgrim routes in
Småland. Start in Växjö (V:a Sigfridsleden)
or Markaryd (Nydalaleden) and aim for
Nydala Abbey outside Värnamo, and if you
feel particularly energetic, you could go to
Vadstena and Nidaros! Stay on a Farm
offers accommodation along the route,
for example, Sånna Gård, Flattinge B&B,
Gåvetorps Gård, Vegby Bolsgård and
Mellskogs Gård.
‘The routes run along forest roads and
gravel roads, through forest and past fields
– typical Småland nature,’ says Marie
Aaby-Ericsson at Gåvetorps Gård.
‘The roads are suitable for cycles, so they
can be cycled instead of walked with daily
excursions from the farms. Walking and
cycling are one way to leave everyday life
behind and enter your own world of
thoughts – a nice way to spend time by
yourself or with others. You will also get
closer to the landscape than when you
drive, and it’s easier to meet people if you
want to.’
If you choose to go all the way to Nydala
Abbey, you will really experience the history.
The abbey was founded in 1143 by French
Cistercian monks. The monks lived here for
almost 400 years. Today, parts of the abbey,
chapel and ruins from old buildings remain.
Enjoy a hot cup of coffee and cake at the
café and the medieval-inspired abbey garden.
More info such as maps and sights along
the route are available at
www.pilgrim-smaland-oland.se
Pilgrimage – an inner and outer journey
Pilgrimages have an outer goal, often a church or holy place, but most pilgrims also have an inner goal. The inner goal of
a medieval person could be to make amends for a crime or to offer the walk to God for someone else. For present-day
people, the inner walk and the outer goal are about having time to finish thinking about something. Those who walk for
a long time often look for a new start in life. www.pilgrim-smaland-oland.se

A great start to the day
Anki Hamberg’s guests are still fast asleep as she creeps up
to prepare breakfast. It usually takes her an hour as there is
a lot to prepare: sausages, bacon, white beans, eggs, pickled
herring, ham and cheese etc, bread, milk, soured milk, cereal,
muesli, juice, coffee and tea. Plus a few other things.
“Breakfast is very important and it has sort of become my thing”,
says Anki.
“You should have a great start to the day! If I’m out travelling,
I want to eat a hearty breakfast and I want the same for our guests
too. Some of them will say ‘Look at this breakfast! There is no way
I can eat this much!’ And no, you can’t. But you can pick something
from the selection.”
We are located on the farm Viksäter just outside of Ullånger in
Västernorrland County. From the E4 it’s only a short drive along a
gravelled road, just long enough to have time to unwind and leave
the stress of the motorway behind you. Anki and Gunnar Hamberg
have run Stay on a Farm since 2002 and it all started when the
gold-washers competing in the Swedish Championships (!) not far
from the farm were looking for somewhere to stay. And it’s been
going ever since.
“The best thing is meeting all the guests. We get on well with
them, laughing and joking. It is actually a lot of fun! We like people
and have made many new friends through this. The majority of
the guests arrive in the afternoon or evening. I greet them at the
farm, welcome them and show them the breakfast room, where they
are staying, and ask them what their plans are during their stay.
Many of them come for The High Coast World Heritage Site, but
there is a lot more to see as well. I give them a map and tell them
of the different excursions they can take in the area; Skuleskogen
National Park, the orchids in Villmyran Nature Reserve, the islands
in Högbonden and Ulvön, accessed by boat and our bicycle and
walking trails. I also inform them that they can hire a raft, canoe,
row boat, fishing equipment and bicycles on the farm.”
A guest who is very familiar with Viksäter by now is Hans
Larsson. His home is in Helsingborg, though all of Sweden is his
office in his role as a salesman. Hans has stayed at various Bo på
Lantgårdar over the years and Viksäter is one of them.
“I run a fashion import business and also sell for others on a freelance basis – each year I clock around 60,000 km on the roads. I’ve
been staying at Viksäter for many years and it’s great! I actually
think the standard here is better than at regular hotels; I have a big
room and can make my own tea or coffee when I get home in the
evening, and the beds are comfortable. Add to that the fact that I
travel with a lot of belongings which I would never have been able
to leave in my car if it was parked in town.”
In addition to Stay on a Farm being an affordable option – ”it
makes a considerable difference when you spend 60-70 nights per
year away” – Hans also appreciates that no two farms are the same.
“Stay on a Farm is exciting. You get to see so many fantastic places
and they are all different. Sometimes you stay in a manor house
and sometimes in a farm house. Sometimes it’s first class, and other
times a bit more basic. Sometimes of course it’s fully booked, and
then you just have to try and find something else...”
At Viksäter Swedish country style mixes with Oriental and
African rhythms, and don’t be surprised if you find yourself staring
into the intense eyes of a lion as you wake up. The furnishings are
mementos picked up on the family’s many travels – one of them
to India – and the African room comes from the son-in-law being
South African.
When you are a guest at Viksäter you can choose to relax and
just be, or head off on an adventure in the region. Perhaps look for
beavers from the solar powered raft? There is a small shop in the
hall that sells everything from fishing floats to Indian bags in case
you have forgotten something at home.
“It all started with a guest forgetting her toothbrush, and it just
grew from there”, Anki tells us.
Once guests leave the farm, the room is cleaned and beds made.
Towels are put out along with a little greeting note – all to make
the next guest feel welcome.
Bed & Breakfast – hotel feel in the country
• With Bed & Breakfast your bed is made when you arrive and a hearty breakfast awaits you in the morning. The room is cleaned for you upon departure.
• Today approximately 130 farms offer Bed & Breakfast. Throughout the entire country! • Prices vary, but generally range between SEK 300-450 per bed in a double room.
• The Bed & Breakfast farms are marked yellow on the map and on the website. All you have to do is mark out the farms along your route!

stay on a farm 2012
Sweden - the
Alvdalen Valley…
Some good friends of mine
asked me if I still enjoy
Stay on a Farm as much
today as I did when we
started in 1994? The
answer is yes.
Why? Well, because the entire
world comes to visit us here at
Hedgården and we have so many fun
memories from guests who have become
our friends. No matter where in the world we
travel, there is always someone we can visit!
A few years ago, a couple from Belgium
came to spend a night. They had met a
previous guest of ours who recommended us
and now they were about to discover Sweden
in six days. Once they had settled in to their
room, they asked if they could stay another
night. Sure, that would be fine. It ended up
with them staying five nights. Hence, Sweden
to them equals the Älvdalen Valley… They took
a guided nature tour with Lars-Erik and a
fishing tour with subsequent fish dinner.
Among many other things. One morning
when they came down for breakfast there was
a sparkling engagement ring on Katrin’s finger!
Philip had waited for just the right moment
to arise on their holiday before proposing,
and the right moment came here in Dalarna!
To celebrate the happy news I brought out a
bottle of sparkling wine, tied a blue and yellow
ribbon around it and together with the other
guests we all toasted and the Dutch sang.
What a fun breakfast that was!
When it came time for them to leave,
Lars-Erik jokingly said ”don’t forget to invite
us to the wedding.”. And would you believe,
six month later an invitation to the wedding
appeared! Isn’t it funny what can happen
with guests!?

Your own house in the country
A small and narrow road winds its way through a landscape of fields, meadows
and oak forests. More than seven types of flowers grow by the side of the road.
We are on our way to visit the sheep in the pasture together with the Spiering
family from Lübeck.
“There have been sheep on the farm since
the 1960s, and these days we have some 40
sheep with lambs”, says Anders Svensson,
host at Sånna Gård along with his wife
Anna.
The swallows are still flying low, though
the thunder that was heard rumbling in the
distance has been chased away by the sun
and the sheep seek the shade under the
large trees. The familiar sound of the food
in Anders’ bucket entices them to come
closer. They bleat, probably wondering who
these newcomers are. Though slightly sceptical, curiosity takes over and they let themselves be patted by the careful hands of the
children. The year-old lambs have grown
big and are probably enjoying the lovely
summer weather the same way we do.
“The children wanted to try staying on
a farm, so we searched online and found
that it was available in Sweden too”, says
Markus Spiering.
The family, Britta and Markus and their
four children (16), Anna (10), Lena (8) and

Ida (1), as well as auntie Inga Sperling –
will be staying at Sånna Gård for two
weeks. They’ve got a lot on their schedule,
among other things a trip to Falkenberg to
visit a good friend, Store Mosse National
Park and they want to check out the
famous shopping centre GeKås in Ullared.
The Swedish summer weather has
appeared at its best so the activity the first
few days in these surroundings, with its
abundance of lakes, was obvious.
“We have been swimming, swimming,
swimming, and hiking through the woods,
though unfortunately we haven’t seen any
moose”, says Anna.
Tomorrow however, an encounter with a
moose is guaranteed as a visit to the moose
park is planned!
Markus and Mårten have scouted out a
number of great fishing spots, though so far
they have had no great fishing luck. Two
tiny perch is all they’ve caught so far… The
reason the family chose Sweden is simply
that they like the country and the people
who live here. They decided on Småland
County due to the fact that the manageable
driving distance from Lübeck. Previously
the family has spent holidays in both
Småland and Värmland, but this is the first
time that they try a form of accommodation
without really knowing anything about it.
“Since we have a one-year-old I felt that
I wanted proper accommodation, with both
a microwave and dishwasher”, says Britta.
“It looked great in the photos on the
internet and it has everything you need.
I thought maybe the house would have
been a little bit bigger, but it is nice!”
The fact that their hosts live relatively
close by is no problem, on the contrary.
“We don’t notice the hosts, but it is nice
knowing that they are nearby should we have
any questions. They are nice and we felt welcome as soon as we arrived”, says Britta.
There is a big difference between staying
in an ordinary cottage; here you are not isolated, but instead come in contact with the
people living here and get to see how they

live. You wouldn’t get
that chance otherwise.
For the Svensson
family this is their
second year as Stay
on a Farm hosts.
“The best thing about having guests
on our farm is the personal meetings”,
says Anna.
“To make someone feel that ‘somebody
did this for me’. To give them an experience
to remember Sweden, Markaryd and Sånna
Gård by when they return home.
To ensure happy and comfortable guests
Anders likes to keep things neat and tidy. “It has to look clean and proper, plus information is very important. If they are interested in fishing, they should be able to find
information on places to fish. We have an
organised activity every week and that is
moving the sheep. We ask our guests if they
would like to join us which is often appre-
ciated. In addition the
children often enjoy
going for a ride on the
tractor. What we may
find commonplace, our
guest might experience
as wonderful, like the time when we cut the
grass with a scythe in the field behind the
house and piled the hay on drying racks.
The food in Anders’ bucket has run out
and the children are happy with today’s
dose of patting the sheep and lamb. The
sheep once again seek out the shade and we
return to the family estate which dates back
to the mid 1800s. Both the farmhouse and
the washhouse are well shielded by the
large ash trees, as old as the house itself.
The Spiering family will continue going
about their peaceful day doing nothing but
simply enjoying life. Tomorrow, new adventures wait.
Self-catering – look after yourself
• Self-Catering means that the accommodation has a fully-equipped kitchen for the preparation of meals by the guests.
• Guest must provide their own bed linen. • Guests clean the accommodation before vacating it. • More than 200 farms
currently offer Self-Catering accommodation. All over the country! • Prices vary, as does the size and type accommodation. The ’Bo på Lantgård’ farms can offer everything from small cottages to larger detached wings.
With Self-catering your accommodation
becomes your very own special place and
that is a luxurious feeling! You decide what
to do about meals, and cook your own food.
The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need. Bring your own bed linen
and towels, or hire from the host. Prior to
departure you tidy up after yourselves.
All cleaning equipment is available on site.
Final cleaning services can in many cases
be added at a cost, and on some farms it
is already included in the price.
Crofts and
manor houses
The type of accommodation varies from one
farm to the next. No one farm is the same
as the other. Sometimes it is a house on the
farm, sometimes a secluded cottage. Perhaps
it is an apartment in the main farmhouse or
a converted barn with all modern conveniences. Big or small. High standard or basic
simplicity. The choice is yours.
Tips!
It is a good idea to bring your own washing
up liquid, dish towel and toilet paper when
staying in Self-catering accommodation.

THE
Winter fishing!
At Vemhåns Fiskecamp &
Ridcenter (fishing camp and
riding centre) in Jämtland
County fishing is available
all the year round. Well
wrapped up it is a wonderful experience to go fishing
in winter. We asked host
Bertil Wahlström a few questions:
How do you go about fishing in winter?
“You drill a hole with an ice drill and use a
jigging rod with hook and sinker. You then
place an angling-worm or maggot on the
hook.”
How do you ensure a really nice fishing
day in winter?
“Usually the best and nicest experience is
had when you go winter fishing in spring as
the sun begins to come out.”
When do the fish bite best?
“Fish have their own feeding times even in
winter, so there is no telling exactly when
during the day they will bite.”
Why should I try winter fishing while
being a guest at Stay on a Farm?
“To sit on the ice on a small portable chair,
whether you are enjoying one catch or
many, catching a few floundering salmon
trout or char for tonight’s dinner, is guaranteed to be a memory for life!”
What is your best fishing memory?
“The time I caught three beautiful one-kilo
char in our small lake called Storvåndtjärn.”
How do you best enjoy the catch
of the day?
“I like to brine the fish slightly, then I put it in
a smoker to be smoked over juniper twigs,
and you have a fabulous culinary experience.”
Try your luck
at fishing
Are you an angler or perhaps just curious about fishing?
When you stay on a Fishing theme farm your chances of
catching a prize fish are greatly increased.
The Fishing theme farms vary greatly. They
could be fishing camps providing real challenges even for the enthusiast, or perhaps a
farm located close to peaceful lake fishing
with all the necessary equipment available
to have good fishing luck. Around the
country there are different fishing experiences waiting to be had all the year round;
fly-fishing in streaming waters, jig-fishing
on the ice and crayfishing in August.
Common for all farms with the Fishing
theme is that all hosts are available to provide information about which type of fishing activity is available in the region. Where
fishing permits are required they can be
purchased on the farm. Life jackets and
boats are available as well as the possibility
to hire fishing equipment. The host is
knowledgeable about fishing rules and can
tell you about the character of the fishing.

to drive in to the cities and deal with all the hassle. Here the
nicest roads will lead you straight to your accommodation.
On the farms with the Motorcycle Theme
the hosts will help make your trip extra
comfortable. As our guest you can park
your motorcycle under cover just a few feet
from your pillow, you have access to washing machine and there are possibilities to
hang and dry your gear. Basic meals can be
served by arrangement – all according to
Stay on a Farm’s criteria as agreed with
Swedish Motorcyclists Association (SMC).
Simply put, the farms have most everything
necessary to make motorcycle travel comfortable!
The hosts are happy to recommend nice
motorcycle roads nearby and suggest excursions in the region. Are you perhaps in the
mood for a few days on Gotland, with a
detour to the classic motor joint Kutens
Bensin on Fårö? Or whistle along in
Templar Arn’s footsteps through Västergötland County? Buying freshly boiled
shrimp on the way back from the day’s
trip is a treat.
Not to mention experiencing a genuine
midsummer in Dalarna or forest roads in
Småland where the foliage is so thick it
creates a leafy roof over your head as you
drive along.
In short: the farms with the Motorcycle

the country – all you have to decide is
where you want to drive this time!

Tournament on the schedule
Lance in your right hand, reins in your left
and complete focus. Sight set firmly on the
target. Ingrid La Brave sets off ahead
… and hits the mark!
Arriving at Trollskogens Gästhus (guest house) and Lilla hästskolan
(riding school) in Torna Hällestad in Skåne County during one
of the annual Knight’s camps is like stepping into medieval times.
You are greeted by both knights and ladies, many dressed in period
clothes. Seeing the small whitewashed farm with thatched roofed,
where both rose and lavender bushes thrive in the flower beds and
hens of all sizes and colours stroll freely, you don’t need a vivid
imagination to conjure up images of the “Cherry Tree Valley” from
Astrid Lindgren’s tale of the Brothers Lionheart. The farm’s horses
graze in the large rolling pastures next to the farm, and up the hill
there is a small riding-track. Past the field, creek and farther into the
grove is where this week’s knights has set up camp. Even though of
course Trollskogens Gästhus offers comfortable beds, the sleeping
arrangement of choice right now is large white sleeping tents.
Today’s activities are well on their way. The riding-track has
been transformed into an arena for tournaments where children
and ponies are busy training for Friday’s show. The sound of
swords clanking can be heard from the meadow where the adults
are being trained by Dennis, the Squire of Knight Ravenheart.
Ravenheart, alias Sandra Anderberg, is undergoing tournament
training together with Lady Josefine, whose day job is working on
the farm’s riding school. They are both very impressed by the progress both the children and the ponies have made since yesterday.
“It seems like it has clicked for you now. What have you been
up to during the night? Have you secretly practised”, asks Knight
Ravenheart who is constantly on hand to give the children positive
feedback and cheer them on as they’re riding.
where the goal is to
hit a shield with the lance. Ingrid La Brave (the brave) break into
a gallop, lowers her lance, aims… and hits! The turn has come to
Knight Wildhorse. The Shetland pony Ronja trots straight towards
the Quintana … but veers off at the last minute. Shoot! It’s not
that easy.
“Ronja is a little afraid of the lance and the Quintana. She has
to get used to them a bit more”, Knight Wildhorse explains.
The children continue practising and get better and better results.
Finally they have all hit the shield – many with enough force to

send it spinning around the pole. Despite the loud bang, on level
with the horse’s head, they seem to take no notice. In the end, Ronja
doesn’t even mind.
The practise is swapped for the ”rings”.
“Now spear the ring with your lances. Ride ahead at your own
pace, remember to stay focused”, Knight Ravenheart tells the children.
Ingrid La Brave starts and sets off in a trot. She just misses
the ring.
“One advice is to not ride lightly. That makes it very hard to hit.
Try sitting down or standing slightly in the stirrups.”
Knight Ivar breaks into a fast gallop. He aims – and hits! Nice!
There is a seemingly never-ending stream of different exercises
and both the children and ponies seem to be enjoying themselves
– and are excited about the upcoming presentation. Among the
riders there is one on own his own horse; the others ride the riding
school’s horses. Some of them use a nylon bridle without a bit.
“It works well, especially in cases like now when the aim is just
to get the horse to move forward and turn the way we want it to”,
Josefine explains.
“Children have a lot to think about with the lance in one hand
and reins in the other. It is good if they don’t pull on the horse’s
mouth if they need to regain their balance.”
After the ride is completed the ponies are fed and released into
the pasture, except for Ronja. She is harnessed to the small cart
and the children and leaders set off on a ride. The surroundings
are wonderful. There are no less than six nature reserves in the area
and some of the farm’s own land is a Natura 2000 protected area
and is included in the Prästaskogen Nature Reserve.
Up on the field it is time for the next activity which is archery
and the rubber wild boar is living dangerously. Someone manages
to shoot the arrow into its bottom.
“Yes! Dinner is taken care of today too , Squire Dennis exclaims.
The wild boar dinner will have to wait though; first it’s time for
lunch at the camp. Stone oven-baked bread with butter and smokecured loin of pork, sausage, chickpeas and nuts are on the menu.
The plates are of wood and the drink is of course served in stoups.
Guests at the Knight’s camp at Trollskogens Gästhus are both > > > >
> > > > people with an interest in horses who are curious about the Middle
Ages and those interested in the Middle Ages who are curious
about horses. In addition to the tournament, fencing and archery,
participants can also try handicrafts such as needle-binding and
plant dyeing. Naturally the lances and the coats of arms are homemade and their colours chosen carefully. Two of the participants
are mother and daughter Lotta and Elina Sleight (Knight
Wildhorse) from Limhamn. They ride here at the riding school
during the terms, though it is their first time participating in the
Knight’s camp. Picking one thing that has been the most fun is
hard.
“It is so much fun both at the camp where we eat and do
handicrafts, and to go riding and fencing”, says Elina.
“I have been riding quite a bit before this, and the way they
view horses here feels good. And being a part of Knight’s week
is fantastic”, says Lotta.
“You can do so many more things than you ever thought you
could, like fencing with a sword, and shooting with a bow. I had
never tried archery before, but it is so much fun and now I want to
get one myself. I aim to do archery on horseback as I enjoy riding
and I enjoyed this! Another great thing is that the children are
expected to take responsibility and see to their own things, though
of course we help each other if need be. It is so much fun doing
this together with Elina and I don’t think I would have done this
on my own on my holiday. At the same time we have a lot of separate activities as we are divided into two groups. She does great on
her own and I don’t have to be the mother so much here.”
In addition to the Knight’s weeks, riding school and recreational
riding, Trollskogens Gästhus and Lilla hästskolan offer a number
of equestrian activities and are always open to suggestions. How
about Riders’ Yoga, Bird watching on horseback, or combining
“just” staying at the farm and riding?
“We put together courses that we would like to do ourselves
and it’s good for the horses to do different things”, says Felicia
Lundgren who has run Lilla hästskolan since 2008.
“The focus is always on the horses feeling good. Our guests too
of course, but not at the expense of the horses.”
Guests stay in the newly renovated Trollskogens Gästhus, with
stable, horses and pasture around the corner. Unless you choose
to do like the knights and stay in a tent.
Horse Theme
35 farms within Stay on a Farm have the Horse theme. Some of them arrange rides, others quick lessons for beginners
or courses for the more advanced riders. Find more information on which horse activities the various farms offer

stay on a farm 2012
Hello there!
Dan Johansson at the Swedish
Transport Administration
likes to bring his colleagues to Mariebergs Wild
Country Farm & Adventure
Centre in Kalix when it is
time for a conference.
What is it about Marieberg that makes you
want to arrange your conferences there?
“The diversity – the possibility to do so many
different things. Enjoyable relaxation with any
group; technicians, administrators, guys, girls…
Everyone enjoys it here. The farm’s location is
breathtakingly scenic and you can sit on the
veranda and enjoy the views of the River Kalix,
check out the fleet of cars, go fishing and then
round off the evening in the sauna.”
Where ideas thrive
It is the country air in your lungs that gives
you that extra burst of energy that allows
ideas to thrive during your meeting.
Farms with the Conference theme offer the
same service as regular conference hotels,
but here you are met by a completely different atmosphere. Impressions from nature
and the farm itself will trigger your inspiration, and often times you have the entire
farm to yourselves. Naturally all technical
equipment is available and the hosts will
tailor your stay to your specific requirements in order for you to concentrate
solely on your task for the day. Many farms
arrange various activities which can be a
welcome break in the day. They can be
anything from pentathlons, guided tours
of the farm, horse riding, acrylic painting
or wine and cheese tasting.

VÄSTMANLAND: Bolunda, Villa Annorlunda, p. 33 • Tåby Gård, see website Norrbotten: Marieberg Viltfarm, p. 42
What is the biggest difference to the conference hotel in town?
“The view, the cosiness … Conference hotels in
town are so much more sterile. Here even the
conference rooms are peaceful! The charm
Anders and his co-workers add cannot be
found anywhere else. He is open to any kind of
clowning about you could possibly want. He
has arranged fermented Baltic herring parties
when we’ve had American and French guests
and he also puts together dinners where the
food is prepared on a morika (large pan) over
an open fire. It is impossible to compare being
here to being at a conference in town…”
Do you get any work done?
“Yes, absolutely. We usually start at 8 am and
finish by 3 pm, so there is definitely time to
get everything done. We are there for the
conference and to do effective work, and we
tie it all together with different activities in the
afternoons and evenings.”
What are usually the reactions of the
participants?
“Many enjoy the relaxation here and want to
return. Even if you don’t catch any fish, you at
least get to enjoy a beautiful sunset over the
river – and the sauna.”

Hello there!
We asked three Stay on a Farm hosts
two questions:
1.What do you enjoy most about being a Stay on a Farm host?
2.What is your biggest challenge?
Karl-Göran Göransson,
Vegby Bolsgård
1. The contact with all the great
people from different parts of
the world; Japan, Israel, the
USA and Europe, just to
mention a few.
2. To always make sure we
have happy guests/customers.
I usually speak to our guests and
ask them what their interests are and recommend excursions based on their answers. Families with children are wel come to come with me to pat the calves if they want, and they usually enjoy that!
Stay on a Farm
with class
All farms within Stay on a Farm are both inspected and
quality graded. This is done in order for you as a guest to
easier find the accommodation you are looking for and
know what services and standard you can expect when
arriving at the farm.
Perhaps your dream is to stay in a simple
but warm and cosy croft or a country
holiday in a magnificent manor house.
Through the classification system you
can easily find out more about the farms
before deciding on which one to visit.
Each farm is graded on a number of
different areas and based on this are
then awarded between one and five corn
ears. One corn ear means ”approved”
– indicating that the farm meets all the
criteria for membership in Stay on a
Farm. Five corn ears means ”First class”.
The number of corn ears published in
16 |
stay on a farm 2012
the farm’s advert is the average grade
awarded. A full inspection report is
shown under each individual farm
on www.bopalantgard.se
In addition to the quality classification itself, each farm undergoes an
inspection prior to being able to operate
under the Stay on a Farm name. Basic
requirements to join the association
are high. The farm has to run an active
farming operation, the host must be
close at hand to the guests during their
visit and the accommodation naturally
must be fresh, clean and tidy.
Hanna Engström,
Ekeskogs Gård
1.Seeing people of
all ages enjoy the Swedish countryside!
2. Speedy bookings. There
is not much time over for paper exercise when you are a farmer and run an equestrian operation.
Gunnel and Jan Jeppson,
Holmamåla Gård
1.The best part is meeting
all the people: in summer
it is mainly German families who come and stay
for two weeks. The rest of
the year it’s all the conference
guests and family functions.
2. Every new group is a challenge, and
making sure that our guests’ first
impression is positive and that their
experience here surpasses their expec tations. Another challenge is to offer new experiences each season. Our latest thing is an orangery.
In the country with
the grandchildren
What do you do when there are so many grandchildren that you have
outgrown your family cottage on the traditional “grandchildren’s
days”? The answer is book in to a farm with oodles of space!
For the third year in a row Torsten
Kälvemark and his wife Berit Olsson
gathered nine of their grandchildren (ages
4-11) for a few days of fun together. The
location this time was Lasätter farm outside
of Nyköping.
“As we live in different parts of the country; Skanör, Södertälje and Kista, we enjoy
getting the children together on more occasions than simply at Christmas”, Torsten
tells us.
“Plus they all live in city environments,
so breathing a bit of country air every now
and then is good for them, and Lasätter is
the perfect spot for our needs. It is a converted barn, so the rooms are big and space
is generous. The kitchen is well equipped
and the large dorm room with bedstead
recesses was perfect! The children could
have their own secluded nook, without
having to go to sleep in separate rooms
when it came time for bed.”
Lasätter specialises in larger groups
whether they are families, relatives, a group
of friends, work kick-offs or conferences.
There are also numerous possibilities to book
activities, courses and package holidays. For
example you can climb the climbing-wall,
enjoy a barbecue in a Sami tent, book golf,
yoga or painting packages, or other fun
experiences for the whole family. And so
much more.
For Torsten & Co the days were filled
with lots of fun and games. They painted,
played games, built with Lego, visited the
horses and played with Milou – the farm
dog who quickly became a favourite with
the children. They built their own hurdles
by the riding-track and their imagination
transformed the Sami tent into an Indian
tepee where on the first evening they
roasted marshmallows. One day when it
was raining cats and dogs the whole group
went to an indoor playland in Nyköping
and when the sun came back out they tried
all the fun hurdles, swings, tightropes and
all the other fun things available at
Palstorps Hage not far from Lasätter.
“Some people think it is hard to bring nine
grandchildren along like this, but it wasn’t at
all. They are quite imaginative and occupy
themselves enough so we don’t have to activate them. The surroundings are so stimulating with the horses and everything else.”
There is no mistaking the fact that the
grandchildren are enjoying themselves.
“Everybody was very happy and are
already looking forward to the next
“grandchildren’s days” and ask us what
we are going to do then!”

in the promised condition or at the right time.
If you do not wish to cancel the rental agreement,
you have the right to demand a reduction in rent from
the landlord.
Self-catering: guests bring their own bed linen

responsible for cleaning the cottage/apartment. Some
farms require a deposit which is repayable when the
guests vacate the premises. If the premises have not
been sufficiently well cleaned, the deposit is withheld.
In the event that no deposit has been made, the
landlord has the right to invoice the actual cost of the
cleaning (minimum SEK 300).
Bed & Breakfast:
War, natural disasters, strikes etc.
Either party has the right to withdraw from the
rental agreement in the event that the cottage/
apartment cannot be made available as a result
of acts of war, natural disasters, labour-market
conflicts, protracted interruption to water and
electricity supplies, fire, or other similar major
occurrences which neither party could have fore-seen
or influenced. Under such circumstances, the landlord is obliged to reimburse what you may have paid
with a reduction for the benefit of any use of the
cottage/apartment cottage/apartment.
What happens in the event of disagreement?
Inform your landlord of any complaints. Remember
that your chances of obtaining redress may diminish
if you delay in making your complaint. If you
cannot agree you should first contact the Stay on a
Farm service in writing, who will review and take
measures if the farm does not live up to its axstandard and the organisation’s requirements. If you
are still not satisfied, you may appeal to The Swedish
National Board of Consumer Rights (Allmänna
Reklamationsnämnden). The Board is made up of an
impartial chairman and a number of representatives
of travel organisations and consumers.
Things to consider before booking
All houses, rooms
and apart-ments connected to Stay on a Farm
are unique and live up to the organisation’s
high minimum requirement standards. The
classings will help you to see which standard you
will be getting. The standard in a holiday home
is fre-quently different from that of your own
home. Furnishing may include modern as well as
older furniture. Dinner sets and cutlery may not
always match. Wardrobe space and storage facilities
may be limited. The bedrooms are often small
and do not always have doors for privacy. Water
heaters may be smaller than in a permanent residence, which may mean that, for example, showers
can-not be used by several persons in succession. It is
wise to ask about the details of the living space at the
time of booking.
The countryside: You must expect flies, wasps and
other insects in and around holiday homes. Nor can
the landlord be held responsible for any cobwebs
indoors or ants on the property. In the event of major
insect infestations, the landlord should be contacted
immediately so that the fault can be rectified. The
landlord cannot be held responsible for any activities
outside the boundaries of the property, including road
works etc.
Errors and omissions excepted.
