CHRIST HALL, KOZHIKODE
What struck me most in reading this fascinating story
are his total faith in a dream and a team in the relentless
search for excellence. He says, ‘ Believe in your dream
and live it every single day…Build a team that complements yet challenges you, and hones your skill sets, and
get them aligned with the big picture sooner rather than
later’.
Fr PROVINCIAL & THE CURIA
Wish you all a blessed Onam Festival
The message of the Apostolic Planning Team of the Province is so much the same: Get passionate about our dream,
build teams, build resilience and pursue excellence always
in ourselves and in our ministries.
FROM THE PROVINCIAL

BELIEVE IN YOUR DREAM,
BELIEVE IN YOUR TEAM
Ronnie Screwvala’s book ‘Dream with your eyes
open’ is the story of a successful entrepreneur. The
book is full of insights on entrepreneurship and human life in general. The very first sentence of the
book is challenging: ‘Failure fascinates and intrigues
me…I’ve never understood why people are so afraid
to fail’. One of the key messages of the book appears
in the introductory chapter. “The future belongs to
those who realize that the goal is no longer teaching talented people how to get a job but how to
create thriving businesses as entrepreneurs or
intrapreneurs/professionals in a company. If we
master this, India will soar’.
Shouldn’t our schools and colleges be shouting this
from roof tops!

The Migrant Outreach Services (MOS), guided by
Fr. Gibi and Sr. Gracy is expanding its activities
in and around Calicut. They have been invited
by the gram panchayath of Koodaranji and are
working with the Health Department and the Labour
Welfare Department. The MOS team conducted five
awareness programmes on health issues and labour
welfare programs covering 250 migrant workers. The
Panchayat insists that all migrant workers in the area
register and obtain labour welfare cards and health
cards after completing health check-up for Malaria,
Filariasis, and HIV/AIDS. It also insists that children
of the migrants in the age group of 5 to 14 be admitted
in the nearby schools. Hearing of the Koodaranji
effect the neighbouring panchayath of Kodenchery
also has invited MOS to its area.
The MOS team together with Frs. Jose Thachil
and Immanuel met the two neighbouring bishops –
Bishop Vargheses Chakkalakal of Calicut and Bishop

First term examinations are going on in our two
schools. The Independence Day celebrations were
conducted in a meaningful manner in both the schools
with patriotic singing, messages and distribution of
sweets emulating the spirit of true freedom. A big band
of students from our ICSE School participated in the
state level ICSE cultural competitions at Kottayam.
The ICSE School is getting ready to host the Zonal
Cultural Fest of the ICSE Schools in order to promote
the extracurricular talents of students.
The community wishes a fruitful time to Fr. Philip
who left for Sri Lanka to do his Tertianship. We had
a combined celebration of the Jubilee of Fr. Xavier
Veliyakam and the feast of our founder on July 31.
Fr Thomas Panackal, the Vicar General, delivered
the homily at the concelebrated Mass celebrated
in the cathedral church. Fr. Xavier underwent a
cataract operation in Malabar Eye Hospital, and is
recuperating. Frs. Xavier and Ramlet attended
the Spiritual Animation Program (SAP) organized in
Christ Hall. The construction work of the new school
building is progressing steadily.

Fr. Mathew Aerthayil presented a paper on ‘Jesuit
Missionaries and Dalit Christians in Malabar’ in the
Assembly of the Kerala Regional Latin Catholic
Council (KRLCC); the three-day Assembly was
held at Asirbhavan, Ernakulam, and was attended
by all the Latin Catholic Bishops, representatives
of Priests, Religious and the Laity. The book ‘Dalit
Movements in Malabar’ (Malayalam) written by
Mathew was informally released by Archbishop
Soosai Pakiam during the function. A basic computer
course mainly for Dalit Christians started functioning
at Samskriti Career Guidance Centre, Pilathara;
it was inaugurated by Dr. T. A. John, Principal of
St. Joseph’s College, Pilathara, on August 29. The
objective is to help reduce the digital generationgap by training the elders in computer skills so that
they are able to understand the younger generation
better. The three-month training course started with
30 participants, and many are in the waiting list.
Thanks to Fr. Xavier Veliyakam for providing us
with two used computers from the St. Joseph’s ICSE
School, Calicut.

The celebration of the feast of St. Ignatius, our
Holy Father, was postponed to Monday, August 1.
Fr. Wilson Mulackal was the main celebrant at the
solemn Eucharistic celebration. At noon we had a
special celebration with our religious neighbours
& close associates. Families of Jesuits from the
neighbourhood, including those of our second year
novices, were invited for the function. We were very
happy to have Fr. E.J Thomas, an attached member
of our community, with us for the celebration. Deacon
Sheise, too, along with the parish priests of Thanki,
where he is doing his diaconate ministry currently,
came to share our joy. On August 4 we had a special
Mass and get-together in honour of Fr. P.T. Mathew,
the new Socius to the Provincial. Fr. Mathew was an
attached member of community for several years, and
a full-fledged member for the past four months. His
presence was a great blessing to us in many ways.
Thank you, Father! We wish you God’s abundant
blessings as you begin this important ministry!
On August 6 we celebrated the silver jubilee of
our beadle Savy’s birth. The First years made
the week-long Indian Contemplative Retreat
under the guidance of the great spiritual master,
Fr. S. Painadath, at Sameesha, Kalady. After
the retreat all of them look quite enlightened! Jack

Achan is back here after directing a Long Retreat to
a batch of Dharmagiri Sisters in Kothamanagalam.
He is now getting ready for the next retreat! We were
fortunate to have a course on How to Approach the
Sacred Scripture by Fr. Henry Pattarumadathil. His
classes and. interactions were very enriching. Thank
you, dear Henry Acha!
including Toby’s dear parents and family members
attended the celebration. Cardinal Mar George
Alencherry paid an informal visit to Sameeksha
on August 16 and had tea with the community. The
JECI training programme at Sameeksha was a great
success and our collaborators were moved by the
eco-friendly environment.
On august 15, we had a colourful flag hoisting
ceremony together with our neighbours. Novice
Jaison Joseph delivered a powerful speech on the
occasion. On Thursday August 25 we had a pleasant
and enjoyable evening with the Lumen community.
We were deeply touched by the warmth & care we
experienced from the Fathers there. Thank you
dear Fathers! Fr. Santhosh, our Socius, is away in
Bangalore, making his annual retreat. He is expected
to be back soon. Fr. Tomson Antony, an attached
member of our community, was with us for almost
a month, pursuing field studies, a part of his M. Ed.
programmme.
Fr. Henry Pattarumadathil, who is presently in the
Province, and is an attached member of Sameeksha
community, gave the annual clergy-retreats in the
dioceses of Ernakulam, Kannur and Kottappuram.
The priests appreciated the Ignatian focus and
contemplative dimension of the retreat. Henry also
gave biblical sessions to the Jnanasameeksha
groups at Kalady and Trivandrum. August 29-31
were days of grace as Fr. Provincial was with us for
visitation. Bro. Mampilly had to be admitted in the
hospital for a minor health problem.

SAMEEKSHA/ ATMAMITRA, KALADY
A national research seminar on Happiness and Wellbeing: Multicultural Perspectives was organized
by Sameeksha Research Centre at Sameeksha.
Academicians and research scholars from all over
India and abroad took part in the research seminar
to explore the concept of happiness and well-being
in different traditions. Dr. M.C. Dileep Kumar, ViceChancellor, Sanskrit University, Kalady, gave an
excellent key-note address and inaugurated the
seminar. Fr. Sebastian Painadath presented a paper
titled Dynamics of Spirituality in Happiness and Wellbeing, and Fr. Xavier Tharamel on Understanding
Happiness and Well-being from the Panikkarian
Perspective.
Sunday, 14th August was a day of grace for the
Sameeksha Jesuit Community. Fr. Toby made his final
commitment in the Society at the Eucharist presided
by Fr. Provincial. Several of us, Jesuits, friends and
family members offered felicitations. All spoke well
of the great enthusiasm with which Toby is involved
in helping teenagers. The entire programme was
marked with simplicity and devotion. About 160 people
Fr. Toby had a serene retreat at Nallathanny away
from the reach of mobile. Atmamitra team ventured
to the Wayanad hills once again with programmes
for teachers, parents and students at Auxilium
School, Vaduvanchal and De Paul School, Kalpetta.
Fr. Toby’s sessions for the DFA participants at
Jeevalaya Family Park were well appreciated.
There were other programmes at Assissi School,
Thalakottukara for students and four half-day
sessions at Vimala Central School, Chathanoor for
parents. There is a full house NLP workshop guided
by Toby going on for 43 people of all walks of life
and religious traditions at Sameeksha as the news is
being prepared.

LUMEN, KOCHI
Fr. Adappur continues to hit the headlines. He has
been featured in The Hindu for introducing Mother
Teresa to Malayalees as early as 1959 when
hers was a little known name across the world.
Subsequently many news channels have queued in
with their cameras to get his words on Mother Teresa
in connection with her canonization. He will be in
the prominent TV channels on September 4. Lumen
community gave a warm welcome to the novices. It
was a meaningful evening where their intellectual

thirst was quenched by a vibrant discussion on the
issues between media-men and lawyers and their
socio-cultural impact. Their Jesuit companionship
was enriched by the delicious dinner that followed,
coordinated by Frs. Shin and Sanil. Frs Ephrem,
Wilson Mulackal and M.J. Thomas joined the
occasion. Fr. Shin gave a three-day recollection to
the sisters of Vimalalayam, Kochi.
The housing project in connection with the Year of
Mercy launched by the Jesuit collaborators and
Lumen community has started collecting funds.
Frs. Mathew Nampiaparmbil and Abraham
Pallivathukkal are the heads of the project. Other
institutions and houses of ours are encouraged to
participate in this project. Please contact any of the
heads of the project for details.
The collaborators and the staff of Sneha Sena and TikTik Life will spend a day together on 4th September.
Most of us will be meeting for the first time though we
have been working for years from various locations
but united by one goal. In collaboration with the Peace
Initiatives between India and Pakistan spearheaded
by Jesuit Fr. Joseph Kalathil, Sneha Sena has
invited children to write letters to friends in Pakistan.
Fr. Kalathil will help reaching letters to Pakistan and
letters of children from Pakistan to Kerala.
One of the major events of the month of Loyola Peace
Institute (LIPI) was the establishment of the first
Peace club in Loyola, Poovar, with Fr. K. J. Thomas
as the Animator. Fr. Sanil initiated the process. It is
the first major step towards a long journey. And we
are glad that it has begun among one of our very
preferentially opted communities. Fr. Binoy will
conduct the formal inauguration as he has started his
Tertianship experiment at Poovar.
Ezhuthu Magazine has a full time marketing manager
and circulation manager now. We also shifted the
designing from Thrissur to Ezhuthu office in Kochi.
LIPI is collaborating with St. Thomas College,
Pala, in organizing an Ezhuthu appraisal seminar
and release function on September 7 at 11 am at
the college auditorium in Pala. The next peace
forum will be set up in the college on the same day.
A similar gathering is scheduled at Gandhigram,
Pathanapuram on September 10. All are welcome.
The dedicated and committed work of Fr. Roy as the
Managing Editor of Ezhuthu is paying rich dividends.
Construction works of a second floor above the
present Snehasena building for the activities of the
Peace Institute was resumed on the August 17. It is
progressing well and we hope to get it functional by
December. Fr. Sanil has started executing innovative
strategies for effective marketing and wider circulation
of Ezhuthu. A planning meeting of the Core Team of
the Peace Institute is scheduled for September 11 at
Lumen, Kochi.

AKJM, KANJIRAPALLY
The former students of AKJM, true to the spirit of
magis and paying back their debt to society, came
forward to put up a beautiful new gate at the entrance
of the school. It was blessed and inaugurated by Mar
Jose Pulickal, the Auxiliary Bishop of Kanjirapally,
on July 29. In his inaugural speech, the Bishop
mentioned that such a venture articulated the quality
of training imparted to the students here. During this
ceremony, the flood gates of heaven were opened
and showers of blessing came down upon the
participants in the form of a mild rain. This gate is
named after Fr Antony Manjil, the first Headmaster
of the school, who made AKJM a unique institution
with his ingenuity and innovative ideas. Later we had
a pubilc meeting presided over by the parish priest.
The chief guest of the day was Fr Sunny Kunnapallil,
the Socius and a former student of AKJM.
The gate has been part of the developmental schemes
for the school envisaged by Fr Salvin Augustine, the
principal of the school. AKJM has reached the takeoff stage with so many child-centred programmes
with the support of the teachers and the parents.
Now AKJM has become an interacting community of
students, teachers, parents, and former students.
We celebrated the feast of St Ignatius with the usual
gusto and enthusiasm. All the students received
sweets. The community hosted a sumptuous dinner
for the staff who in turn felicitated the Jesuits. All
the priests and religious and the well wishers of the
school in and around Kanjirapally were invited on
July 31 to share our joy with a fellowship meal.

Rojas forcefully delivered the Independence Day
speech during the Flag hoisting ceremony.
Br George Vattukulam is as fit as a fiddle and he
joins us in playing badminton every day. Sch. Roy

PIUS X ITI, EDATHUA
The Pius X ITI celebrated its 54th Annual day on July
18 which was inaugurated by Smt. Tessy Jose, the
gram panchayath President, Edathua. The keynote
address was delivered by Fr. Joe Mathew, Director

gathered including the parents, trainees and wellwishers of ITI; our trainees performed many cultural
items.
We began the new academic year on August
11. Pravesanotsav 2016 was inaugurated by
Mr Pauly Thomas, President, Chambakulam Block
Panchayath. This year there is good improvement
in the number of trainees admitted; we have 133
trainees for the five trades, a 30% increase from last
year. We celebrated the feast of Pope PIUS X, our
patron saint, on August 20. The Institute Day also
was celebrated on the same day, with our trainees
performing variety entertainments. The audience
comprised of our neighbours and other distinguished
guests. Many heads of neighbouring institutes joined
us for the snehavirunnu.

Mr Lau Malayil and team from Alapuzha diocese.
A series of personality development classes were
conducted by Fr. Jacob Chakathara, KCYM director
of Changanassery Archiocese and Sch Roy Alex.

LOYOLA, POOVAR The feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola was celebrated on a
grand scale at Loyola Poovar. As the feast day fell on
a Sunday we had the Solemn Mass on Saturday with
Fr. Dominic Palakeel as the main celebrant. The
invited guests included the neighbouring parish
priests, religious sisters, members of the governing
body and general body, JECI core group, the teaching
and non-teaching staff and our neighbours.
Fr. Binu Kaduthalakunnel joined the teaching
staff in the third week of July and started his new
mission with zeal and enthusiasm. A significant event
of the month was the ‘Induction Programme’ for the
first year B.Com students conducted by Fr. Sanil
Mathew Mayilkunnel. It was a great opportunity for
them to discover themselves and set their goals as
they began the academic year. We thank Fr. Sanil for
his availability and skilful guidance. Mr. Christudas,
a software engineer working with Microsoft in London,
narrated his inspiring story that started from Loyola
Poovar almost 20 years back. His eventful story left
the students spell bound. In view of launching the
proposed “Pakal Veedu” for the aged members of the
locality in the year of mercy, a consultative meeting of
the beneficiaries was held on August 29 in which 128
of them participated.

XTC JUNIORATE, BELGAUM
The month of July was a colourful one for our XTC
Juniorate. The continuous rain had stopped and the
sun started to peep in. Amidst our busy schedule this
month, we had time for relaxation and celebration.
We had a day’s outing to Gokak falls on 12th August.
We celebrated the feast of the Assumption of Our
Lady and Independence Day with great pomp and
zeal. The Eucharistic celebration evoked the real
spirit of ‘unity in diversity’. The hymns for the mass
were sung in different languages – Malayalam, Hindi,
Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Tamil, Konkani and
English.
Jossie D’Mello. It was indeed a spiritual journey
and an opportunity to get back to our roots. We had
a wonderful and thought provoking presentation
on the proposed New Education Policy-2016 by
Mr. Prince Gajendrababu who is an activist in the
field of education. We also had a class on non-violent
communication by Fr. C.P. Rajendren (SRI). He gave
us a method of practising non-violent communication
in day-to-day life.
