a whale of a good time - University of Missouri
A Whale of a Good Time The UMKC School of Dentistry launched its first Continuing Dental Education cruise experience August 19-25, 2007, aboard the Holland America, USS Noordam, the newest vista-class luxury ship to sail to Alaska from Seattle, Wash. The CE programs were presented by Charles Dunlap (DDS ’60), who lectured on clinical pathology, and Annie Olgilvie, who lectured on office management. The 51 cruise participants were welcomed aboard the USS Noordam with a bouquet of fresh flowers in their rooms and a cocktail reception sponsored by the UMKC Dental Alumni Association. The itinerary began with a visit to Glacier Bay, Juneau, and Sitka, Alaska; then it was on to Prince Rupert, B.C., and Victoria, B.C. Throughout the cruise alumni, friends and spouses enjoyed a variety of expeditions: adventure by float-plane, rope and zip challenges, salmon fishing, whale watching, spotting wildlife, and plenty of souvenir shopping. A whale of a good time was had by all! Comments: “The entertainment was superb”; “Very nice; enjoyed every moment”; “Well organized!”; “The ship was magnificent in every way.” University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry Office of Alumni and Advancement 650 East 25th Street Kansas City, MO 64108-2784 UMKC is an equal opportunity, affirmative action institution. Sutton c a m pa i g n f o r D e n t a l E xc e l l e n c e by Sarah Major Over the past three years, the campaign has raised $7.5 million of its $12 million goal. The campaign is now embarking on a two-year push to raise the remaining $4.5 million. “Your philanthropic support of The Campaign for Dental Excellence will empower the UMKC faculty,” says Dr. Michael Reed, dean of the UMKC School of Dentistry. “We especially need more clinical faculty and more endowed professorships and chairs.” Dean Reed explains that in order for UMKC to remain competitive with other dental schools, it faces the dual challenge of maintaining current faculty members while also recruiting new faculty. “It’s a fact of life that dental faculty members’ salaries are significantly less than a practicing dentist,” says Dr. Reed. “Faculty recruitment and retention continues to be an area of concern for us.” Russell Tabata (DDS ’67), a life-long active member of the Hawaii UMKC Dental Alumni Association, fondly recalls the qualities of UMKC faculty whom he admired. “I remember having outstanding clinical instructors when I was in dental school,” says Dr. Tabata. “They were very willing to help us with basic skills. And if you didn’t understand the first time, you had more opportunities to go over it again. They were very patient.” Scholarship Endowments ($4 million) “The UMKC School of Dentistry must compete with larger dental schools that offer full-ride scholarships,” says Dean Reed. “Because UMKC is a state-assisted school we don’t have the luxury of offering incoming students full-ride scholarships. However, offering scholarships is a very powerful recruiting tool.” Explorer Fall 07 With the average graduate facing a debt over $100,000 in student loans, scholarship support enables the school to recruit and retain the best and brightest students, regardless of their socioeconomic situation. “It’s nearly impossible for dental students to have a job,” says Mike McCunniff (DDS ’83), director of Outreach and current president of the UMKC Dental Alumni Association. “Students take 25 hours each semester their first two years in school. Scholarship support can alleviate some of the stress and financial burden they experience and enable them to concentrate on their studies.” The average graduate faces a debt of over $100,000 in student loans Dean Reed also points out that the retirement of the baby boom generation over the next decade will have a significant impact on the oral health care profession. “We need to start thinking about replenishing those dentists who are approaching retirement,” said Reed. “Many of our students are the children of alumni. The alumni know better than anyone how expensive dental school is.” R. Wayne Thompson (DDS ’67, MS ’72), chair of the UMKC School of Dentistry’s Rinehart Foundation points out, “By supporting The Campaign for Dental Excellence, we’re not giving money to support a cause in California. We’re giving money to support our alma mater and help it continue to produce exceptional graduates.” Clinical Programs & Services ($1.5 million) The Special Patient Care Clinic exemplifies the UMKC School of Dentistry’s commitment to delivering comprehensive oral health care to all members of the community it serves. Special Patient Care is dedicated to 3 Campaign for Dental Excellence Continued meeting the needs of patients with complex medical conditions, and to serving patients without regard to their financial resources. “About 60 percent of our patients are cancer survivors,” says Dr. Leonard Lausten, director of Special Patient Care. “Most of our patients are good people; people with modest means, often living from paycheck to paycheck. Suddenly they’re hit with a debilitating disease such as cancer. The philanthropic support the school receives helps us serve these patients.” Dr. Lausten admits that he can’t help becoming attached to his patients. On many occasions he meets them when they’ve just been diagnosed with cancer, and he treats them through every step of their cancer treatment. Occasionally he’ll lose a patient and then lend support to the patient’s family. “Many times we send their families sympathy cards and attend their [funeral] services,” says Dr. Lausten. “It’s an honor to be allowed into these patients’ Students now perform all their record keeping on chair-side computers, more than 300 in all 4 lives and develop such a unique bond with them.” Instructional Programs ($1.5 million) In order for dental education to keep pace with changes in technology, teaching methods and materials must constantly evolve. Because electronic information technology has become such an integral part of the school’s clinic management system, a primary need is to periodically upgrade the computers in the clinic. Over the past decade the school has been refining its electronic patient record. Students now perform all their record keeping on chair-side computers, more than 300 in all. A portion of these dollars will go toward replacing the computers in the clinic. These funds will also provide clinical and instructional equipment to keep pace with developments in dental curriculum, as well as support student and resident research and professional activities. Ensuring the Future Vitality of Dental Education UMKC is not alone in attempting to ensure a bright future for dental education. This past year the American Dental Association demonstrated its regard for dental education by launching Our Legacy-Our Future Campaign, a national campaign to raise over $500 million for dental education. The UMKC School of Dentistry is one of the first academic partners in this national effort. Any gift made to the UMKC School of Dentistry will count 100 percent toward the ADA’s Our Legacy-Our Future Campaign goal. Gifts to the school will, however, remain with the school to be used for its specific needs. “The Campaign for Dental Excellence is the only way for us to continue to move forward,” says Dr. Reed. “During the time I’ve served as dean, our alumni have continually proven themselves to be enthusiastically sensitive to and supportive of the school’s needs. I know that they’ll prove themselves again through The Campaign for Dental Excellence.” In Memoriam Galen Dean, DDS ’29 Ronan, Mont. Richard S. Alley, Sr., DDS ’52 San Antonio, Texas Deanna D. Dr. Cavanaugh Explorer Fall 07 More than A Dentist by Sarah Major “I have the best of both worlds... I get to teach students as well as treat an exceptional group of patients” How does philanthropic support translate into concrete results at the UMKC School of Dentistry? The school’s Special Patient Care clinic serves as a shining example. Each year at the Midwest Dental Conference hundreds of alumni and their family and friends turn out to support “Pouring from the Heart.” In the process of enjoying a gourmet meal, fine wine and a live auction, they have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Special Patient Care clinic. That financial support enables the clinic to treat patients regardless of their socio-economic situation. The Special Patient Care clinic specializes in treating patients with special needs, such as cancer survivors, organ transplant patients and patients with chronic medical conditions. Dr. Leonard Lausten, director of Special Patient Care, is passionate about his job and isn’t shy about sharing his passion. “I have the best of both worlds,” says Lausten. “I get to teach students as well as treat an exceptional group of patients.” When asked about the connection he feels with his patients, Dr. Lausten’s eyes Explorer Fall 07 well-up with tears. He tells of a woman he met shortly after she was diagnosed with cancer. He has provided preventative care prior to her receiving chemotherapy as well as different restorative procedures. Dr. Lausten discovered that they both share a love for crossword puzzles. “She brings her crossword puzzles into the waiting room with her and asks me for help as soon as she enters the dental chair,” said Lausten. “If you don’t form a bond with these people, there’s something wrong,” says Dr Lausten. 5 C a m pa i g n f o r d e n ta l E xc e l l e n c e Message from the Dean For the past four-and-a-half years, the UMKC School of Dentistry, working in close partnership with the Rinehart Memorial Foundation and UMKC Dental Alumni Association, has been quietly planning and pursuing a capital campaign. The process began with an 18-month planning phase, co-chaired by myself and Robert Peterson (DDS ’63), during which we recruited a 21member Committee on Clinical Excellence. This group of senior faculty members, administrators and alumni reviewed the results of the school’s strategic planning and accreditation processes, assessed our needs and opportunities, and developed recommendations and priorities for a capital campaign. For the past three years, we’ve been in an organizational phase: goals have been set, leadership structures have been created, and major gift prospects have been solicited. We named this fundraising effort the “Campaign for Dental Excellence” and set a goal of raising $12 million over five years. This amount will be divided among the following priorities: • $4 million for faculty endowed positions such as the Tanaka Hawaii Chair and an additional endowed Chair in Orthodontics; 6 • $4 million for scholarship endowments, such as class scholarships; • $2.5 million to support clinical programs, particularly outreach and special patient care programs; • $1.5 million for clinical and instructional infrastructure, such as distance education and teledentistry. During the “quiet phase” of the campaign we have raised over $7.5 million in gifts and pledges, including over $500,000 from our alumni leadership. At the March 2007 Annual Meeting of the Rinehart Foundation and Dental Alumni Association Boards of Trustees, we launched the third and final phase of the campaign, the “public phase.” Now, we need to raise the remaining $4.5 million over the next 24 months to complete the campaign successfully. In this final phase of the campaign we will focus our efforts on engaging our alumni. Many of you know that this is a critical time in the history of dental education. We are challenged as never before to: • Create a diverse, compassionate and clinically competent work force to meet current and future needs for oral health care. • Advance the state of scientific knowledge. • Provide services to vulnerable populations while at the same time increase the clinical experience of our students. Our dental work force, nationally, is not growing rapidly enough to meet the oral health needs of all Americans. Shelly Gehshan, a senior analyst from the National Academy of State Health Policy, estimates that as many as 100 million Americans currently have compromised access to oral health care. Unless we strengthen our dental work force, improve our preventive care and discover more productive and effective approaches to the delivery of dental care, things may well get worse in the future. In Missouri and Kansas, and other states throughout our region, access to care is a growing problem. Our dental work force, top heavy with baby boomers, is aging and we are struggling to replace those who are retiring from practice. This potential imbalance between the growing needs of the communities we serve and their static, sometimes dwindling, supply of dental professionals concerns me more than anything else. As the only dental school in this two-state region, we face a significant responsibility in providing oral healthcare professionals for the future. The American Dental Association with equal concern this past year announced it would lead a national campaign for dental education, the Our Legacy-Our Future Campaign, which aims to raise over $500 million for dental education. The ADA recognizes dental education as the foundation from which all dentistry is built and sustained. A strong dental education system produces a strong dental profession, resulting in the highest level of oral health care for the public. I am proud to say that the UMKC School of Dentistry is one of the first academic partners in this national effort. So, any gift you make to the UMKC School of Dentistry will count 100 percent toward the ADA’s Our LegacyOur Future Campaign goal. It will, however, remain in our accounts for our specific needs. I am particularly proud of our faculty, who are strongly behind the Campaign for Dental Excellence. Led by a 14-member planning committee, they’ve pledged to raise from among themselves one million dollars over the next five years to assure the campaign’s success. Several of our senior faculty members have already made pledges of $10,000, $15,000 and $25,000. They firmly believe, as one of them put it, “It’s time for us to give back.” Those are the kind of people we have teaching at the UMKC School of Dentistry. If they’re willing to make that type of sacrifice for this campaign, I know our alumni will come through as well. We depend heavily on the kindness and generosity of our alumni. We could not achieve the consistently outstanding results we do without your support. On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, accept my most sincere thanks. You are the best! Thank you for your continuing support and best wishes, Michael J. Each year since 1986, NECO has held a dramatic ceremony on Ellis Island in New York City to bestow the Ellis Island Medals of Honor to American citizens of diverse origins for their outstanding contributions to their communities, their nation and the world. The honorees represent all walks of American life (from Supreme Court justices and Nobel Prize winners to periodontists, like Dr. Thomas), but all are, according to NECO, The FYI section of the July 4, 2007, edition of The Kansas City Star newspaper included a feature story about Dr. Thomas receiving the award. In the article, Thomas states, “This country is an amazing place. You look at health care, education, the way our cities are developed and our transportation, even the way we are taxed. You get paid back for what you pay in. When you look at America and the opportunities we have, we outshine any country in the world. I’m proud to be an American, and I never would have achieved what I have achieved anywhere else.” NECO was created in 1984 on the conviction of its founder, William Denis Fugazy, that the diversity of the American people is what makes this nation great. NECO’s mission is “to honor our diverse past, to advocate for positive change in the present, and to build strong leaders for the future.” 35 Class Notes Continued southwest Colorado, and is semi-retired. The foundation has established over 70 endowed scholarships as well as endowments for advanced education, faculty recognition and development, scholarly lectures and symposia. These endowments total nearly $8 million. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Dr. Roy J. Rinehart Memorial Foundation. Created in 1957, the foundation memorializes Dr. Roy James Rinehart, who served as dean of the Kansas City Western Dental College and University of Kansas CitySchool of Dentistry (UMKC’s predecessors) from 1928 to 1957. The Rinehart Foundation is an independent, selfgoverning 501(c)(3) not-forprofit organization, whose sole mission is to raise money to benefit the UMKC School of Dentistry. This past year, the Rinehart Foundation provided the school with more than $1.3 million for scholarships, instructional programs, clinical equipment, faculty and student research projects, and outreach Explorer Fall 07 Two of the foundation’s newest endowments are the Dr. Gary Newman Endowment for Faculty Leadership and the Faculty Recognition and Development Fund. Both focus on the critical need for affirming, recognizing and rewarding faculty members for dedication and exemplary service to the school, profession and community. Gary Newman (DDS ’66), who died after a brief illness this past December, was an indefatigable volunteer and alumni leader at the School of Dentistry, serving both as president of our Dental Alumni Association and chair of the Rinehart Foundation. Gary was also active in organized dentistry, at all levels, serving as president of the Topeka Dental Society, the Kansas Dental Association and as a 14year delegate to the American Dental Association, and ultimately an ADA trustee. The Dr. Gary Newman Endowment for Faculty Leadership was created in January by his widow, Wanda, sons Todd and Jon, and over 100 of Gary’s friends, colleagues and patients, who wanted to remember his remarkable life of service to others. The objective of the endowment is to recognize faculty members, who, like Gary, have a deep and passionate commitment to service. The idea for the Faculty Recognition and Development Fund came from a committee of 14 senior faculty members – trustees of the Rinehart Foundation and the Dental and Dental Hygienists’ Alumni Associations – who wanted to give back to the school and encourage other faculty members to do so as part of the School’s Campaign for Dental Excellence. They asked themselves, “What do we have to do here at UMKC to assure that faculty members have the opportunity to build successful and satisfying careers?” The answer was: We need to recognize people for doing a good job and we need to invest in their professional development. Their goal is to raise one million dollars over the next five years in partnership with the Rinehart Foundation and alumni to build this endowment. This past year I was approached by two alumni, separately and independently, Bernie Esrock (DDS ’79) and Jim Hobbs (DDS ’70), who wanted to make substantial gifts to the school. Both men had achieved financial success well beyond what they imagined they would when they entered dental school many years ago. Each man said he wanted to give back to the school in order to express their gratitude and to contribute to something of enduring importance. When I shared with them the plans for the Faculty Service and Development Fund, both men designated a portion of their gifts for that purpose. As you make your decisions this year about a pledge or donation to the Rinehart Foundation and UMKC School of Dentistry, I invite you to consider designating the Dr. Gary Newman Endowment for Faculty Leadership and the Faculty Recognition and Development Fund for your gifts. The faculty is the school’s most critical resource. Let’s do everything we can to assure faculty excellence at UMKC. Thanks and best wishes! Barry Daneman 7 UMKC Students Learn Outside the Classroom The synergy between our group and the town made our cause so much more than we had intended It all started with an empty room. The hard work, the heat, the exhaustion, the smiles, the laughter…it all started with just an empty room. It’s amazing the amount of work that our little group from Kansas City was able to do in just two weeks. We all were a little lost that first day, arriving in Honduras with trunks full of dental materials and equipment, half of us not even knowing the language. Months of preparation had brought us to this point, but the fact remained that we really didn’t have any idea of how big this particular outreach trip was really going to be, or the impact it was going to have on us, and the little town of Pimienta. By the time we had our equipment unloaded in the Community Center, the room had already begun to resemble a state-of-the-art dental clinic. Dual compressors gave enough power to run the clinic twice over. A massive suction unit was already mounted, with fresh PVC piping linking the entire operation together. Portable, adjustable dental chairs were already set up, with overhead lights welded to their stands. A triage station with an intraoral camera and a dental X-ray unit was being wired as we watched. Some of our volunteers had come down days earlier and had completed an astonishing amount of work…I still cannot say enough about them. The first day, after our half hour drive through the town, still a little sore from the set up the previous night, we pulled into the Community Center to the sight of hundreds of people waiting for treatment. There were people of all ages: children, their parents and the elderly. As we triaged these patients, it was soon evident we would be doing all aspects of dentistry. By the time the two weeks were over, nearly 1,300 cases were seen ranging from oral surgery to complex restorative, endodontics, periodontics and pedodontics. Generous donations were made to our program; X-ray units, cavitrons, cordless light curing units, and the majority of materials were provided to us free of cost. A student commented, “Some of the instruments and dental materials were better than anything I’ve used before.” According to the students, the most rewarding thing about our work was seeing the appreciation in the eyes of our patients. We restored the smiles of teenage girls, we ended pain in children and adults, and we were even able to attend to the needs of a local family of television and music entertainers. After restoring their smiles, these young siblings performed musical numbers for us to show their appreciation for our work. Some of esthetic changes we made were so powerful the patients themselves were often overwhelmed with emotion. After completing a case we would show the patients a mirror. They looked at themselves, smiled, said “Gracias” and calmly walked away. After a few minutes you could see this same patient standing outside with their family with tears of joy in their eyes. The amazing thing about this endeavor was the community’s interaction from the very beginning. Before we had even arrived, volunteers from the community had already begun setting up compressors and other equipment. The mayor, who also happened to be the local physician, was there almost daily to ensure our security, hygiene faculty of the Des Moines Area Community College. Class of 1965 William P. Smith, Jr., Bartlesville, Okla., sold his practice and building last year. His son, David, is a medical doctor. His second son, Alan, writes software for large companies. His daughter, Susanne, is a senior at Oklahoma University. And his son, Buck, is a sophomore at Oklahoma University. William and his wife, Anne, are currently living most of the time on the Cayman Islands, where there is no crime. Baxter Newton, Joplin, Mo., is a firsttime grandpa of a baby boy, Sebastian Clark Newton. Class of 1966 Rudolph Dittrich, Saratoga, Calif., is now a life-time member of the California Dental Association. Vance J. Dykhouse, Blue Springs, Mo., is serving as the president of the American Board of Orthodontics. He is in his final year of an eight-year term on the board. He serves as both a director and as an examiner and also represents the Midwestern Society of Orthodontics, a constituency of the American Association of Orthodontics. Dykhouse’s son, David, joined the practice in 1999 and became certified in 2006. Bicycling for MS Brenda Cindrich, Cara Bradley and Dean Elledge (DDS ’83) participated in the Multiple Sclerosis 150mile bicycle ride across western Missouri. The event is held every September. Brenda has participated in three events, Cara twice and Dr. Elledge was a first timer. All three of the participants work in the UMKC Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency program and Faculty Practice. The three riders raised nearly two thousand dollars in donations from friends, family and UMKC staff and faculty. Next year they plan to double their fund raising and invite other staff, faculty and alumni to participate with them. Approximately 1,500 rode from southern Kansas City to Sedalia, Mo., and back, during the two-day event. Cara and Brenda completed both days. Class of 1969 Jerry R. Fankhauser, Springfield, Mo., says that his wife, Leslie, retired after teaching kindergarten 39 years. Dr. Fankhauser has also completed 300 openwater scuba dives. Donald (Don) F. Swartz, Ridgway, Colo., and his wife, Sally, moved to Explorer Fall 07 33 class notes Class of 1947 Enslie I. White, St. Joseph, Mo., retired in the fall of 2005. Class of 1950 Billy Carlton, Aurora, Colo., and his wife, Eileen, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Billy turned 87 this past winter and has been retired since 1984. Carl J. Fyler, Topeka, Kan., was named the Knight of the Legion of Honor for his valorous actions during World War II by the Counsel General of France in Chicago. Glenn L. Hough, Pittsburg, Kan., retired from his practice last winter after seeing orthodontic patients for 43 years. He’s still living in Pittsburg, Kan. Class of 1951 Jack Austerman, Oklahoma City, Okla., was recently named clinical professor emeritus of orthodontics at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry. Class of 1952 L. Thane Frazier, Lyons, Kan., is still practicing three days a week, and he’s 81-years-old. His wife, Mary Lou, passed away recently. His daughter, Mary Jo, has her own dental practice in South Monica, Calif. Thane’s nephew, Mike, practices ortho in Indiana, and his granddaughter, 32 Nicole, and her husband, Jeff Gust, practice dentistry in Hutchinson, Kan. Class of 1953 John E. Dietrich, Mission Hills, Kan., retired after 53 years of practice. He was the first to specialize in endodontics in Kansas, and treated over 40,000 patients. He plans to travel with his wife, Barbara, and spend time with their three children and five grandchildren. He also plans on playing golf, doing volunteer work, and watching the Royals and Chiefs. John wants to say “hi” to his classmates and gives a special salute to the new UMKC endodontists. Wayne Peay, Corrales, N.M., has been retired since 1990. He and his wife, Marilyn, recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary. They have five children and 13 grandchildren. Class of 1957 L. Edward Engle, Olathe, Kan., retired in 1999 and moved from Texas to the Kansas City area. After 17 years in practice he attended the University of Texas Medical School branch at Galveston as a full-time resident in anesthesiology. He then practiced hospital anesthesia for 20 years. Class of 1960 George W. Karr, Kansas City, Mo., has extracted or repaired teeth in 20 different countries, including Togo, West Africa, the Turks and Caicos Islands, Haiti, Peru, Fiji, Guadalcanal, and Papua, New Guinea. He made impressions last fall for a 102-year-old woman so she could eat cake on her birthday. Dr. Karr has a sign on his desk that says “Work is the most fun of all.” He is still practicing dentistry although he has unsuccessfully retired five times. John Kazmierski, Pittsburg, Kan., retired in 2004. He started his practice in 1960, on his wife’s birthday. “I gave her the gift of going to work in 1960 and retirement in 2004.” He thinks she liked the gift in 1960 better. Arnold Sarya, Traverse City, Mich., was honored with the 2006 Distinguished Service Award from the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce. He was an orthodontist in Traverse City from 1960 to 2003. His belief in helping others was the foundation of his practice and is reflected in his community service. Dr. Sarya has always had an interest in young people and sports. He was instrumental in the development of an outdoor skating rink in Traverse City and the creation of a local cross-country skiing program. He is grateful for the excellent training in orthodontics he received at the UMKC School of Dentistry, which allowed him to serve his patients well in his orthodontics practice. Class of 1962 Charles Beadles, Jr., Knoxville, Iowa, retired in 2005 after 41 years as a dentist with the Federal Government. He spent three years in the U.S. Navy and 38 years with the Veterans Administration/Veterans Affairs. Dr. Beadles spent the past 25 years as chief, Dental Service VAMC, in Knoxville. He was also chief, Dental Service, Central Iowa Health Care System, including medical centers in Des Moines and Knoxville. He also served as an adjunct associate professor, Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry at the University of Iowa, College of Dentistry. He also served on the dental Explorer Fall 07 by Amul H. Singh, DDS make sure we were well fed, helped us with medical referrals, and provided us with much needed manpower. People from the community pulled together to help triage patients, break down language barriers, and communicate our needs to the crowd awaiting our services. Children from the community donated their time as translators and assistants for each dental student. Even the crowd themselves had pulled together to help. Community members kept the waiting area clean by sweeping daily, and a local woman had set up a tortilla stand each morning where those waiting to be seen were able to get a bite to eat. On the whole, we had simply come to provide dental care. However, the synergy between our group and the town of Pimienta made our cause so much more than we had intended. Every morning our dental team started the day with breakfast and a team huddle. We would sit in the meeting area of our hotel and discuss the changes for the day. Team huddles ensured that individual concerns were addressed, students were properly assigned to their rotations, birthdays were recognized, currency was changed for a leisurely trip to the market, and everyone was encouraged to keep doing their very best. At night our hotel provided much needed rest and relaxation from the long hours we put in each day. Trips to local restaurants for nights of dinner and dancing allowed the students to socialize and decompress. undergraduate student, not yet entered into dental school stated, “The trip reaffirmed many of the reasons that I want to go to dental school and helped me start to see where some of my interests lie within the field.” This experience, no doubt, proved to be an educational and emotional journey that will remain with the students, volunteers, faculty and dental school hopefuls indefinitely. After two weeks of intense yet rewarding work it was time to tear down our makeshift clinic. One by one, each student station was packed away, our autoclaves were emptied, instruments sorted, dental chairs folded and the remnants of dentistry that were left on the floor were swept away. We were now standing in an empty room just as it was two weeks before with thoughts of how to make next year’s trip an even bigger success. I would like to extend a very special thanks to Dr. Tom Jones. It is because of his hard work that this program would not be where it is today, and this article or program would not be possible. “Overall, I am glad that I went and found it very gratifying. I am also faster and more confident in my skills as a dentist whether it applies to [oral surgery] or operative procedures.” This was a comment from a student who participated in our trip. From this statement it is evident that our students benefited greatly from our trip. During the trip, students saw cases that challenged them. They had access to instruments and materials that were of the highest quality; their working speed increased dramatically and their confidence skyrocketed. An Explorer Fall 07 9 A DIFFERENT KIND OF DENTAL METAL 10 They are dental students AND they are a rock and roll band, aptly named “The Metal Chapter” of dentistry. Their music is as raucously loud — they play rock standards by bands such as Guns ‘N Roses, Aerosmith and Ozzy Ozbourne — as their spirits are generous. They played a benefit concert, Saturday, January 13, to raise money for the local chapter of Ronald McDonald House Charities. After months of planning and promoting the concert, their efforts were an unqualified success — they rocked the house to the tune of $6,500 for Ronald McDonald House. Hassen Explorer Fall 07 New Health Sciences Building Opens dental Hygiene Administration Changes The UMKC School of Dentistry has new neighbors. In August, the UMKC Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy began moving in to their new home in the Health Sciences Building (HSB), located on the north side of 25th Street between Charlotte and Holmes. Construction of the $50.2 million facility, which provides 227,649 gross square feet of instructional, research and administrative/ support office space, began in November 2004. The Health Sciences Building will enable UMKC to alleviate workforce shortages through increased capacity both for health care professionals and research scientists. With the new structure, the School of Pharmacy is expected to increase its enrollment of 345 by more than 100 students; the School of Nursing’s annual enrollment is anticipated to nearly double to 600 students. HSP will also provide needed lab space for the region. As designed, the facility’s labs enable faculty researchers with expertise in informatics and patient systems to create a new technology base to affect patient care. The space also provides a quality environment in which to conduct product testing and improvement. Additionally, the building enables the School of Pharmacy to rank in the top 10 pharmacy schools nationwide in federal funds and helps the School of Nursing triple the amount of extramural research it secures to $750,000 per year. The official grand-opening celebration for HSB took place on Friday, September 21, 2007. Missouri Governor Matt Blunt and Missouri Senator Kit Bond took part in the building’s ribbon-cutting ceremony. This year, though, the 300 students, faculty, alumni and friends cheered for more than just the Royals. They showed their appreciation for Dr. John Haynes (DDS ’60, MA ’71), the founder and guiding force of this annual tradition, by wearing t-shirts that read “Dr. John Haynes Opening Day.” The event was sponsored by the UMKC Dental Alumni Association and Procter & Gamble/Oral-B, and catered by Jack Stack Barbeque. Classmates got caught up on what they’d all been doing over the past 20 years and had a hard time believing it had been so long. Everyone enjoyed the dinner on Saturday at Pierpont’s at Union Station, but missed classmates that were unable to attend. Hope to see everyone at the 25th. Thank you to all who made this a great reunion. Class of 1992 The Dental Class of 1992 celebrated its 15-year reunion during the 2007 Midwest Dental Conference. They reconnected with one another at their Hyatt Regency hospitality suite. They enjoyed dinner Saturday evening at Pierpont’s at Union Station. Approximately 18 classmates and their spouses were on hand for their reunion festivities. Class of 1997 The Dental Class of 1997 enjoyed their 10-year reunion in conjunction with the 2007 Midwest Dental Conference. They had a good time catching up on one another’s lives over the past 10 years. Everyone gathered in a hospitality suite at the Hyatt Regency and then proceeded to Manny’s for dinner. If you couldn’t make it for the 10th, we hope to see you at the 15th. Class of 2002 The Dental Class of 2002 reunion had a very nice turnout for our celebration of five years in dentistry. We spent most of our time at our Hyatt Regency hospitality suite catching up with one another, talking about our families and our practices, watching the NCAA tournament, and a very entertaining replay of our Bushwacker video. We enjoyed our catered food and a few cocktails, too. Our furthest traveling classmates were Marti Cherry from North Carolina and Chris Budig, back from his endodontic residency in Birmingham, Ala. Everyone had a great time and looks forward to the next opportunity to reunite! Explorer Fall 07 Nan Evanson Sarah Major Dee Swindler Dr. Nan Evanson joined the School of Dentistry in June 2007 as director of development. Evanson has had a long career in higher education, both at UMKC and at Rockhurst University. She has two degrees from UMKC: a B.A. from the Conservatory, and an M.A. from the School of Education. Additionally, Nan received her doctorate in higher education from the University of Kansas. Nan will do major gift fundraising for the School of Dentistry and will devote her time to helping the school complete The Campaign for Dental Excellence. Welcome Sarah Major as our new administrative assistant. Sarah is a recent graduate of UMKC with a B.A. in English. She’s an avid cyclist and has ridden the entire Katy Trail six times. She also rides the MS 150 on an annual basis. Her primary duties include organizing the annual class reunions, working with the dental alumni on the capital campaign and editing the electronic newsletter. Dee Swindler joined the UMKC School of Dentistry in September 2006 as senior accountant. She handles financial matters for the Rinehart Foundation, the UMKC Dental Alumni Association, and the UMKC Dental Hygienists’ Alumni Association. She has an accounting degree from Friends University in Wichita, which is near her hometown of Halstead, Kan. She is a fanatical theatre usher, and enjoys providing piano accompaniment for church services, community theatre, and high schools. 25 Class Notes Continued of-town members were impressed by the changes in the Kansas City area and the school. Everyone expressed the feeling that they want to be back for our 50-year reunion; and they had one regret about this year: They wished everyone was alive to make it to the festivities. Class of 1967 Class of 1967 The Dental Class of 1967 had 71 members in attendance at the Hereford House for our celebration of the 40 years that have passed since we graduated from UMKC. As usual we discussed PRO’S POINT, the scientific spot where it doesn’t get any better. Now, the talk of the POINT is not dental technique, but the best spot for retirement. We have established an email tree for maintaining contact about our lives. Class of 1972 Class of 1977 James Schuette reports that the 24 members of the Dental Class of 1972 got together to swap stories at their 35-year reunion. The funniest were about our class parties, especially the pig roast at Lake Weatherby. Some were laughing so hard they had tears in their eyes! Class of 1977 The Dental Class of 1977 celebrated their 30th reunion in their hospitality suite at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Thanks goes out to Robert Marx for making the arrangements. Everyone had a good time catching up on their lives. We’re looking forward to our 35th. Thank you to everyone who made this such a great reunion. Class of 1982 Class of 1982 24 The Dental Class of 1982 celebrated their 25th year in dentistry with a hospitality suite at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Friday, March 16, 2007. We had 37 classmates in attendance. Our class was awarded a Rinehart Medallion at the Rinehart Breakfast, Saturday morning, for establishing a scholarship in the class’s name. The weekend was capped off by a reception and dinner on Saturday night at the Hyatt. All attendees had a wonderful time catching up, and are looking forward to our 30th reunion. Amyot has served on the dental hygiene faculty since 1992 and as director of the Division of Dental Hygiene since 2001. Over the past few years, Amyot has been instrumental in helping the Division of Dental Hygiene develop and implement two distancelearning degree programs. Students anywhere in the United States can enroll in a Distance Education Bachelor of Science Degree Completion Program or a Distance Education Master of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene Education Program (the only program of its kind in the country). As director of Distance Education and Faculty Development, Amyot will use her experience and expertise to help other faculty members develop curriculum that incorporates new technologies. “UMKC is not alone in pursuing ways to apply new technology to teaching,” explains Amyot. “In 2004 the American Dental Education Association formed the Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education. They’re doing amazing work in fostering dialogue and generating ideas from across dentistry and dental education. Incorporating technological innovation in curriculum is a challenge throughout dentistry. In fact, I attended a global conference on dental education in Dublin, Ireland, in September. This is a very exciting time to be a dental educator.” For more information about UMKC’s dental hygiene distance education programs, visit http://dentistry. umkc.edu/bec_student. 17 Honor Roll of Donors ContinuedA l u m n i R e p o rt 2 0 0 7 Mrs. Sondra Dee Mills Dr. David M. Explorer Fall 07 class Reunions Class of 1947 If everyone had as good of a time as I did at the 60-year reunion of the Class of 1947, it was a complete success! It was also very exciting when we found that Tom White was practically accused of swiping John Stone when he unknowingly didn’t make a proper check-out from his care facility. But Tom did this so we could enjoy John’s company and fill the gap making an even dozen to those attending the Midwest Dental Conference. Tom is a determined man and I’m sure John, after having a great time, was returned in good condition with a big smile on his face. I know we were all grateful that John Stone was present. Thanks Tom! We thought we had broken a record for the largest attendance at a 60th reunion, but the Class of 1946 reunion had 15 attendees last year. Even our great Class of 1947 couldn’t beat “Peck’s Bad Boy.” Our thanks to everyone; from Larry Graham and Bill Duensing. Class of 1947 Class of 1957 Twenty-six members of the Class of 1957 celebrated their 50th anniversary along with their spouses. A total of 57 people attended. Our successful reunion was due in part to Tom Parker, for bringing his 1957 yearbook, allowing us to remember how we once were — long, long ago. Thanks goes out to Walt Morrison for his generous contribution of the fruit of the grape; to the UMKC Alumni Office and the Hyatt Hotel for their great assistance and support; to the banquet committee for arranging a fine meal; to the Rinehart Foundation for a great breakfast and recognition of our contributions; and, finally, to the group itself for their warm and loving care, concern, and friendship for one another which has continued steadily for over 45 years. Class of 1957 Class of 1962 The Class of 1962 reunion had 29 members celebrate their reunion at the 2007 Midwest Dental Conference. The class member who traveled the furthest was from Alaska. There were 26 wives in attendance and like the class members, they also had a great time getting reacquainted and up to date on family and friends. It was interesting and inspiring to hear the stories of what our classmates have done and accomplished since graduation. Class of 1962 We enjoyed our hospitality room that allowed us to visit and rest up. We had dinner at the hotel on Saturday evening — the room and meal were great. As usual, Jon Harrison did a great job as the master of ceremonies. He provided us a great evening by bringing old pictures that showed how we’ve changed over time. The evening’s festivities began with celebrity emcee Larry Moore auctioning the VIP Table for a very generous $2,200. This year the gala had an Irish theme to go along with St. Patrick’s Day. Brian Williams (DDS ’83) and Dan Nielson (DDS ’02) were co-chairs of this year’s event. The event raised more than $140,000 to benefit the UMKC Dental Oncology Support Clinic. 22 Explorer Fall 07 2007 Rinehart Medallion Recipients 2007-2008 Officers & Directors The Rinehart Medallion honors the memory of Dr. Roy J. Rinehart, longtime dean of the dental institutions that evolved into the UMKC School of Dentistry. Explorer Fall 07 Midwest dental conference Highlights from 2007 The Midwest Dental Conference was hosted by the UMKC Dental and Dental Hygienist’s Alumni Associations Mar 15-19, 2007 at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center and Westin Crown Center Hotels. It was another record year for attendance with 1,340 dentists and 863 dental hygienists attending the conference. The alumni come to the conference for many reasons but this year two of the big reasons were international speakers Gordon Christiansen and Connie Podesta. True to his reputation Gordon Christiansen did not disappoint our alumni, with his cutting edge presentation of implants and removable prosthodontics. Connie Podesta was described as a “breath of fresh air,” “dynamic speaker” and “very knowledgeable.” The best non-clinical presentation they had ever attended. Explorer Fall 07 The Midwest Dental Conference would not be complete without the alumni returning for their class reunions. This year the class reunions ranged from the Class of 1947 through the Class of 2002. The annual Alumni and Friends Recognition Breakfast was again hosted by the UMKC Dental Alumni Association and Dr. Roy J. Rinehart Memorial Foundation celebrating 25, 40, 50 and 60 years in dentistry. This was a most memorable conference with exciting speakers and reuniting alumni with their classmates and friends. We hope to see everyone next year at the Midwest Dental Conference April 3-6, 2008. 21
