Fun on ice
Xtreme Ice Arena
in Mirrabooka has
bumper cars — on
ice! Fun for all ages,
they are basically a
big rubber tube with a
seat in the middle that
glides across the ice,
allowing you to crash
into the other cars
(don’t worry Mum or
Dad, it’s totally safe).
Strap on some skates
while you’re there and
try a few laps around
the rink. Bumper
cars are $5 for five
minutes and general
entry is $15 with $5
for skate hire. Don’t
forget to take a pair of
socks and some warm
clothes.
Xtreme Ice Arena is
also hosting a New
Year’s Eve Winter
Wonderland Skate on
December 31. Dress as
your favourite winterthemed character and
skate the night away.
It starts at 7.30pm and
the cost is $25, which
includes skate hire.

AQWA Scuba Santa
This Christmas Eve Santa will dive into AQWA’s
shipwreck coast aquarium on an important
mission to retrieve some very special presents!
It was Santa’s elf’s idea to protect these special
gifts. She said: “Where better to hide them than
with sharks, that have six senses and cruise
slowly to keep watch?”
Visitors can meet the helpful elf when she dives
with the sharks on December 21 at noon to hide
the presents for Santa. Santa will then collect
the presents at noon on December 24 before he
departs on his Christmas journey.
Sabrina Galletti, 10: I like to hang out
with friends and have some fun. I catch
up on my math and sometimes I like to
read, too.
Anya Rajan, 9: The best thing is I get
to play tennis. I’ve been playing for four
years and in the holidays I play five days
a week. I like going to the beach as well.
Claire de Saxe, 8: I go down to the
beach and go fishing. This year we’re
going on lots of holidays; Eagle Bay is
my favourite place to go.
Talyn Galic, 11: I like going to the skate
park in Belmont or Leederville. I ride
my scooter and can do a few tricks like
360s and tail whips.
Xavier Wright, 7: I go swimming in my
pool, it’s a big one. I have a boat but it’s
broken and I also play with the soccer
ball and boogie boards.
Patrick Cooke, 8: I go camping, there’s
lots of things to do. Last year I went to
Denmark. I also like going to the beach,
usually I just chill.

ENQUIRE NOW FOR 2014
The Joy of Dance
The Charlesworth Ballet School (formerly the Terri Charlesworth Ballet Centre) was
founded in 1960 by WA’s first prima ballerina Terri Charlesworth OAM Cit WA.
The school’s philosophy through our junior dance programme is to provide a nurturing
and gentle introduction to classical ballet. Ballet lessons are carefully planned to give
children an inspirational introduction to the world of dance first and foremost, and a love
for dance and beautiful music.
Classes commence from the pre-primary grade and have a strong focus on the emotional,
physical and intellectual development of each child.
Branches are located throughout the metropolitan area. Visit our website for details.

Fun Fact:
Mars is home to the
largest volcano in our
solar system. Olympus
Mons is 25km high!
When you visit the centre this
summer, you will be able to take part
in building the world’s biggest Lunar
City, using various craft and recycled
materials. You will be creating your
own small part of the city to add to the
whole creation. Maybe you’ll build your
own spacecraft to park in the docking
bays, or construct an indoor farm? At the
end of the holiday period the city will be
complete and ready for human habitation.
This activity is a great way to imagine what
us humans may need to live on our Moon, or
even planets such as Mars, in the future. It
runs Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays
at Gingin’s Gravity Discovery Centre from
December 30-January 30.

Summer is all about the coastline in Australia
but there are a few things you need to look
out for when enjoying a day at the beach.
A lifeguard from Surf Lifesaving WA shares some top tips for
staying safe at the beach:
• Always swim between the red and yellow flags
The lifeguards have chosen a section of the beach that
is best for swimming and they will closely supervise this
area. Lifeguards pay more attention to the area between
the red and yellow flags than any other part of the beach.
• Ask a lifeguard
Feel free to ask lifeguards about the day’s conditions, as
well any additional beach safety advice they might have
for that specific beach — because every beach is different.
• Swim with a friend
Not only is swimming with a friend or family member a
fun way to enjoy the beach, it is also very sensible. You
can keep an eye out for each other, and if assistance is
required, one person could go for help
• If you need help, stay calm and attract attention
If you are not feeling comfortable in the water and you
require a lifeguard’s assistance to get back to shore, stay
calm, raise your arm in the air and wave
it from side to side. This will attract the
attention of a lifeguard, who will be
able to come to your assistance. You
should then conserve your energy by
floating on your back.
• Visit Beachsafe
Surf Life Saving has recently launched
the Beachsafe smart-phone app and
the website beachsafe.org.au, with
information on every beach in WA
(both patrolled and un-patrolled) and
features information on patrol times,
weather and conditions, plus up-tothe-minute hazard information such as
if the beach is closed or if there has
been a shark sighting
there.
