ASIS is many things to many people. Recently we O asked people what OASIS means in their lives. Here are a few responses to brighten your day. Thanks to all who took the time to respond! Oasis offers terrific opportunities to be involved in the community, to learn, and to be challenged. It is a joy to learn just for the sake of learning without the pressure that most of us felt in college. Vivien Steinberg, Maryland For me, it smoothed the transition from work into the retirement world -- keeping busy with presenting programs, attending classes, volunteering in different capacities, and making new friends who share my enthusiasm for learning. Mona Resnik, St. Louis Oasis helps me stay connected, not only with people with similar interests but also with the younger generation through Oasis Tutoring – a chance to give back in some small way. Mary Pickerell, Washington Metro Uncertain about your Medicare choices? Help is here. Arts & Humanities Clothing of the Home Front - Fashion of World War II In periods of war, fashion trends traditionally have had to acquiesce to the needs of supporting troops. This holds true during World War II, when civilians gave up materials like cotton, silk, copper, and more for the war effort. Yet interestingly unique styles in fashion still managed to emerge. This class will examine how WWII affected the look of clothing during the war years, and the creative way people came up to combat it. Arts & Humanities Film Appreciation Film Screening: Porgy & Bess Summer Cinema Series: The Career of Sidney Poitier Join OASIS this summer as we take a look at the dynamic career of Sidney Poitier. Sir Poitier, born February 20, 1927, is a world-renowned BahamianAmerican actor, film director, author and diplomat. In 1964, Poitier became the first Bahamian and first African-American to win an Academy Award for Best Actor, for his role in Lilies of the Field. The significance of these achievements was bolstered in 1967, when he starred in three successful films, all of which dealt with issues involving race and race relations: To Sir, with Love; In the Heat of the Night; and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, making him the top boxoffice star of that year. In 1999, the American Film Institute named Poitier among the Greatest Male Stars of classic Hollywood cinema, ranking 22nd on the list of 25. After his film career, he served as ambassador to Japan from the Bahamas. We will explore some of his greatest cinematic roles. Join us today as we enjoy a biographical lesson on one of the greatest classical actors of Hollywood. Water and snacks will be provided. The only person willing to overlook her past and offer her shelter is the crippled Porgy. Their relationship is threatened by the disapproval of the townspeople, the presence of her old drug supplier Sportin’ Life - and the threatened return of Crown. This film production had an interesting history for its creation, and is no longer distributed by the Gerswhin estate. Film Screening: Porgy & Bess 617B2 Elaine Cook Friday May 27 1:00 - 4:00 Free Baldwin Hills Banneker Room Film Screening: To Sir, With Love After searching unsuccessfully for work as an engineer, Mark Thackeray (Sidney Poitier) accepts a teaching position at a rough, East End London high school. His colleagues warn him about the impossible brutes he will encounter there, but still he enters his classroom unprepared for their horrible defiance. A classic portrayal of teen angst, where these impoverished, battered kids, who have turned out badly, are determined to brutalize everyone around them. The teachers let them dance between classes to vent some of their aggressive energy, but they all treat the classroom as though it were an unsupervised sandbox. With transcendent dignity, Thackary tames them and teaches them self-respect. As sentimental as the plot may be, the kids’ transition is touching, and Poitier is as cool and classy as ever. Tibbs was simply waiting for his next train at the station in Sparta, Mississippi and the confusion is soon resolved. But when local police chief Gillespie (Rod Stieger) learns that Tibbs is the Philadelphia PD’s number one homicide expert, he reluctantly asks for his assistance. The murdered man, Mr. Colbert, had come to Sparta from the North to build a new factory and his wife and business associates immediately point the finger at Endicott, the most powerful man in the county and the one who had the most to lose if a major new employer comes to the area. Tibbs’ life is clearly in danger but he perseveres in a highly charged and racially explosive environment until the killer is found. Film Screening: Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner Joanna “Joey” Drayton brings her fiancee, Dr. John Prentice, home to sunny San Francisco to meet her affluent parents. Their liberal persuasions are now put to the test, for although the young man is an ideal choice (he’s highly and internationally respected in the medical field, and he’s impeccably mannered, handsome, well dressed and of a respectable California family), he’s black. The film, which covers one busy day in the Drayton home, is essentially a drawing-room comedy, a series of cross-conversations between the young doctor and the girl’s parents, and finally between all sets of parents and offspring. A simple dinner is extended to include the doctor’s parents, who fly up from Los Angeles for the evening, and the crusty but benevolent old Irish priest, a friend of the family. This romantic comedy addresses tough issues of the period, and it worth the time to watch again. However, in certain medical situations, this option has been made available to individuals suffering from particular terminal illnesses. The End of Life Option Act was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown last year. The End of Life Option Act gives terminally-ill mentally capable Californians the option, together with their families, their doctors and their faith, to make the endof-life decisions that are right for them in the final stages of their terminal illness—including the option to request a prescription from their doctor to shorten their dying process painlessly and peacefully. A Widow’s Business: What You Need to Know Before You Need It The death of a spouse can be the most difficult challenge in an individual’s life. Many of us consider the emotional aspect of that event, however there is much more to this life adjustment than grief. Many steps need to be taken to prepare for the next day, the next year, and the rest of your life. From where to seek help in funeral preparations to managing financial changes, author Liz Swiertz Newman will give you the knowledge you need. After her husband Lee died, Liz wrote A Widow’s Business: A Practical Guide Through the First Year After the Death of a Spouse to help others understand all the work that needs to be done as you adjust. The class is designed for everyone, whether you are making sure you’re prepared, just entering the process, or checking to see if you attended to everything. While grieving is an important part of coping, don’t let it impede getting these important tasks done.
