The OASIS Institute • Summer 2016
What does OASIS mean to you?
ASIS is many things to many people. Recently we
O
asked people what OASIS means in their lives. Here
are a few responses to brighten your day. Thanks to
all who took the time to respond!
Oasis offers terrific opportunities to be involved in
the community, to learn, and to be challenged. It is a
joy to learn just for the sake of learning without the
pressure that most of us felt in college.
Vivien Steinberg, Maryland
For me, it smoothed the transition from work into
the retirement world -- keeping busy with presenting
programs, attending classes, volunteering in different
capacities, and making new friends who share my
enthusiasm for learning.
Mona Resnik, St. Louis
Oasis helps me stay connected, not only with people with similar interests but also with the younger
generation through Oasis Tutoring – a chance to give
back in some small way.
Mary Pickerell, Washington Metro

It’s a place to learn
and meet new people in a
safe environment. Oasis
puts meaning and energy
into life. Love, love, love their day trips!
L.S., San Antonio
Oasis is a chance to get out and meet other people
who have the same interests, ideas and passions that
I do; a chance to be a student again!
Holly, Syracuse
I’ve been retired for six years. I miss the challenge
of developing things, but I am committed to lifelong
learning in multiple ways. OASIS helps me do that.
Lynn Edward Costlow, Albuquerque
Oasis is my fountain of youth. Every interest is
nourished by the wonderful variety of lectures,
classes, new friends and, of course, the fabulous
staff. A dear friend introduced me to Oasis. I’m
grateful every day that I listened!

A Note From
Dear OASIS Members and Friends,
our Director
“This Spring is better than the last. No point in dwelling in the past.
Each new season is there for a reason. Life keeps changing, just keep rearranging”.
- Patricia Walter
Pacific Region OASIS continues to bloom each term. I am delighted by the hard
work and efforts of our staff and Program and Travel committees to consistently
identify innovative and exciting classes, activities, and trips. Please be sure to sign up
for these new classes offered this Spring/Summer: The History of Fashion, Second Time Around: Grand
Parenting, Men’s Strength and Stretch, Let Go & Dance, and Protecting Your Legacy: Estate Planning.
On Friday May 13, 2016 we will host a Bring a Friend - OASIS Open House. This will be an opportunity
to invite the community, potential members, and other stakeholders to introduce them to OASIS. I would
like to encourage each and every member to invite your neighbors, friends, family members, and others
who could benefit from what OASIS offers. Our goal is to continually outreach to more participants and
increase our visibility in the community. We hope this event will be another positive step in this direction.
Are you an advocate of Pacific Region OASIS? Well, let’s make it official! This Spring, we are launching
our new PRO ADVOCATE monthly giving program. Becoming a PRO ADVOCATE is public
confirmation you support OASIS, older adults, and are a partner with us in promoting and outreaching
to more participants to improve their health and well-being. You will join a special group of people
contributing each month to assist us in providing quality programming and supporting healthy aging.
Soon, you will be receiving more detailed information in the mail explaining how to sign up and why this
is so important to the older adult community in Los Angeles.
A special thank you is extended to our Intergenerational Tutors and CATCH Healthy Habits volunteers.
Because of your dedication, Pacific Region OASIS continues to be a national model of program success!
And to our center volunteers, you are amazing. You are the first face many see when they visit the OASIS
centers. It is because of your genuine kindness and professionalism, members keep coming back. Thank
you so much!
I see trees of green, red roses too. I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself. What a wonderful world

Fashion of the Victorian Era - I Want
a Victorian Costume!
So, you want a Victorian Costume, do you?
Easier said than done. This era of fashion was known
for its extravagance, for both men and women. Join
Shon Le Blanc, owner of Valentino’s Costumes and
lecturer on fashion in history as we explore just what
constitutes a ‘Victorian costume,’ and all the different
styles that encompasses. This class will examine the 62
years, 4 fashion progressions and 9 silhouette changes
that make up the Victorian era (1839-1901). We will
sample men’s and women’s clothing and accessories
from day wear to the ballroom.

Clothing of the Home Front - Fashion
of World War II
In periods of war, fashion trends traditionally
have had to acquiesce to the needs of supporting troops.
This holds true during World War II, when civilians
gave up materials like cotton, silk, copper, and more
for the war effort. Yet interestingly unique styles
in fashion still managed to emerge. This class will
examine how WWII affected the look of clothing
during the war years, and the creative way people
came up to combat it.

OASIS Book Club
During the winter term we discovered an anthology
that resonated well with the Book Club members. It
contained stories written by women of African, Asian,
Hispanic, Native American, and Jewish background
and presented a rendering of the human experience
generally not treated with depth, complexity, and
intimacy. The editor, Wendy Martin, has produced a
sequel that portrays women’s experiences in the final
decades of the twentieth century and the beginning of
the twenty-first. It will be the source for our abridged
summer term of four weeks. The title is “More Stories

American Women.” Once again our reading adventure

Fifteen-year-old Kambili and her older brother Jaja
lead a privileged life in Enugu, Nigeria. They live in
a beautiful house, with a caring family, and attend
an exclusive missionary school. They’re completely
shielded from the troubles of the world. Yet, things
are less perfect than they appear. Although Papa is
generous and well-respected, he is fanatically religious
and tyrannical at home – a home that is silent and
suffocating. As the country begins to fall apart under
a military coup, Kambili and Jaja are sent to their aunt,
a university professor outside the city, where they
discover a life beyond the confines of their father’s
authority. When they return home, tensions within the
family escalate, and Kambili must find the strength to
keep her loved ones together.

Book Club - Everything I Never Told You
Lydia is dead. But they don’t know this yet... So begins
the story of this debut novel, about a Chinese American
family living in 1970’s small-town Ohio. Lydia is the
favorite child of Marilyn and James Lee; their middle
daughter, a girl who inherited her mother’s bright blue
eyes and her father’s jet-black hair. Her parents have
determined that Lydia will fulfill the dreams they were
unable to pursue. When Lydia’s body is found in the
local lake, the delicate balancing act that has been
keeping the Lee family together tumbles into chaos,
forcing them to confront the long-kept secrets that
have been slowly pulling them apart. A story of family,
history, and the meaning of home.

Book Club - A Lesson Before Dying
A Lesson Before Dying, set in a small Cajun community
in the late 1940’s. Jefferson, a young black man, is an
unwitting party to a liquor store shootout in which three
men are killed. As the only survivor, he is convicted of
murder and sentenced to death. Grant Wiggins, who
left his hometown for the university, has returned to
the plantation school to teach. When he struggles with
his decision whether to stay or escape to another state,
his aunt and Jefferson’s grandmother persuade him to
visit Jefferson in his cell and impart his learning and
his pride to Jefferson before his death. In the end, the
two men forge a bond as they both come to understand
the simple heroism of resisting – and defying – the
expected.

The history of language has many interesting
twists and turns. There is constant change in what words
mean, how they are put together, and what it all sounds
like. The alphabet we use a prime example, stemming
from early cuneiform symbols and growing into a
deeply complex written language. Join Jason Price as
we explore the early stages of the alphabet we use is a

Summer Cinema Series: The Career of
Sidney Poitier
Join OASIS this summer as we take a look at the
dynamic career of Sidney Poitier. Sir Poitier, born
February 20, 1927, is a world-renowned BahamianAmerican actor, film director, author and diplomat.
In 1964, Poitier became the first Bahamian and first
African-American to win an Academy Award for Best
Actor, for his role in Lilies of the Field. The significance
of these achievements was bolstered in 1967, when
he starred in three successful films, all of which dealt
with issues involving race and race relations: To
Sir, with Love; In the Heat of the Night; and Guess
Who’s Coming to Dinner, making him the top boxoffice star of that year. In 1999, the American Film
Institute named Poitier among the Greatest Male Stars
of classic Hollywood cinema, ranking 22nd on the list
of 25. After his film career, he served as ambassador
to Japan from the Bahamas. We will explore some
of his greatest cinematic roles. Join us today as we
enjoy a biographical lesson on one of the greatest
classical actors of Hollywood. Water and snacks will

After searching unsuccessfully for work as an
engineer, Mark Thackeray (Sidney Poitier) accepts
a teaching position at a rough, East End London
high school. His colleagues warn him about the
impossible brutes he will encounter there, but still
he enters his classroom unprepared for their horrible
defiance. A classic portrayal of teen angst, where these
impoverished, battered kids, who have turned out
badly, are determined to brutalize everyone around
them. The teachers let them dance between classes
to vent some of their aggressive energy, but they all
treat the classroom as though it were an unsupervised
sandbox. With transcendent dignity, Thackary tames
them and teaches them self-respect. As sentimental as
the plot may be, the kids’ transition is touching, and
Poitier is as cool and classy as ever.

Film Screening: In the Heat of the Night
Detective Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier) is caught up in
the racial tension of the US South when he is arrested
after the murder of a prominent businessman. Tibbs
was simply waiting for his next train at the station in
Sparta, Mississippi and the confusion is soon resolved.
But when local police chief Gillespie (Rod Stieger)
learns that Tibbs is the Philadelphia PD’s number one
homicide expert, he reluctantly asks for his assistance.
The murdered man, Mr. Colbert, had come to Sparta
from the North to build a new factory and his wife and
business associates immediately point the finger at
Endicott, the most powerful man in the county and the
one who had the most to lose if a major new employer
comes to the area. Tibbs’ life is clearly in danger but he
perseveres in a highly charged and racially explosive
environment until the killer is found.

Joanna “Joey” Drayton brings her fiancee, Dr. John
Prentice, home to sunny San Francisco to meet her
affluent parents. Their liberal persuasions are now
put to the test, for although the young man is an ideal
choice (he’s highly and internationally respected in
the medical field, and he’s impeccably mannered,
handsome, well dressed and of a respectable California
family), he’s black. The film, which covers one busy
day in the Drayton home, is essentially a drawing-room
comedy, a series of cross-conversations between the
young doctor and the girl’s parents, and finally between
all sets of parents and offspring. A simple dinner is
extended to include the doctor’s parents, who fly up
from Los Angeles for the evening, and the crusty but
benevolent old Irish priest, a friend of the family. This
romantic comedy addresses tough issues of the period,
and it worth the time to watch again.

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Beverly Douthet
Beverly has been a fitness instructor and program
developer for over 30 years. As a little girl growing
up on a farm in Arkansas she was always fascinated
with the body, the way it moved and how the
muscles could be developed with a little consistent
and repetitive work. Regardless of any physical
situation you can strengthen and tone your body, but
first of all you must want it. Gravity, Pilates, Studio
Cycling, Water Aerobics and a chair class for people
with limited range of motion are among the many
disciplines she teaches. She developed an Agua Fit
program at the Hollywood YMCA, which became so
popular it was featured on ABC’s The Doctors. The
class demonstrated the great benefits that water can
have on one’s flexibility, muscles, and joints while also
having a great cardio workout.

The idea of taking one’s own life can be a
difficult subject for some people to discuss. However,
in certain medical situations, this option has been
made available to individuals suffering from particular
terminal illnesses. The End of Life Option Act was
signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown last year. The
End of Life Option Act gives terminally-ill mentally
capable Californians the option, together with their
families, their doctors and their faith, to make the endof-life decisions that are right for them in the final
stages of their terminal illness—including the option
to request a prescription from their doctor to shorten
their dying process painlessly and peacefully. Join
Compassion & Choices, a non-profit organization that
specializes in outreach regarding what this act means
and how it works in the medical field, as we learn about
this newly ratified act and how it will affect our lives.

A Widow’s Business: What You
Need to Know Before You Need It
The death of a spouse can be the most difficult
challenge in an individual’s life. Many of us consider the
emotional aspect of that event, however there is much
more to this life adjustment than grief. Many steps need
to be taken to prepare for the next day, the next year, and
the rest of your life. From where to seek help in funeral
preparations to managing financial changes, author
Liz Swiertz Newman will give you the knowledge you
need. After her husband Lee died, Liz wrote A Widow’s
Business: A Practical Guide Through the First Year
After the Death of a Spouse to help others understand all
the work that needs to be done as you adjust. The class
is designed for everyone, whether you are making sure
you’re prepared, just entering the process, or checking
to see if you attended to everything. While grieving is
an important part of coping, don’t let it impede getting
these important tasks done.
The Truth about Reverse Mortgages
Are you a homeowner on a fixed income and it has
you in a bind? Have you been considering a reverse
mortgage but are not quite sure if it is for you? Are you
curious about the benefits and cons of a entering into
reverse mortgage? Have you explored the process but
still have unanswered questions? Do not make a move
before attending this session! This session is designed
to educate and inform participants about the reverse
mortgage process. Whereas everyone’s situation is
unique, there are general benefits and risks applicable to
every situation. By the end of this session, participants
will have an increased understanding of the overall
reverse mortgage process, borrower requirements and
responsibilities, loan limits, types of reverse mortgages,
and types of eligible properties. Do not miss this
opportunity to be educated on this very important topic.

Del Mar Horse Racing
It’s time for an adventure, where ‘the surf meets the
turf’ at the exciting Del Mar Race Track! This historical
horse racing venue was the brainchild of Bing Crosby
and his Hollywood friends, as a getaway location
back in 1937. The tradition still carries on today of
‘nobody’s in a hurry but the horses.’ In 1993, major
renovations were completed on the track, worth over
$80 million. Now, we can enjoy the Hollywood history
with modern style! There will be reserved seating in
the Del Mar Clubhouse, and lunch will be of your
choosing among the many restaurants and concession
stands at the track. Join OASIS and enjoy some good
old-fashioned horse racing!

Celebrate Bastille Day
at Normandie Bakery!
Do you feel like a Francophile? Is Paris one of your
favorite places to be? Then join us for a celebration of
Bastille Day! Just like the American Revolution, the
French Revolution began with a bang, the storming
of the Bastille prison in search of weapons for rebels.
To commemorate this day, OASIS will be spending
lunch with a French patriot, Chef Josette LeBlond!
We will enjoy a menu of delicious French food, while
Chef Josette provides us with a little bit of history. We
will meet at the bakery for the lunch, so carpooling is
recommended.

Eat Your Heart Out in
Little Italy
What goes together better than great Italian food
and California sunshine? Experience a guided tour
of Little Italy in San Diego, a neighborhood with an
Italian presence since 1871. Six thousand families of
Genovese and Sicilian origin once called this home.
The salty sea air, the ready-made port, bougainvillea,
geraniums, olive trees and cactus plants reminded
many Italians of the sunny fishing villages back home.

They painted their tine wood bungalow homes the
colors favored by their ancestors. They built their own
boats, fished with hand-sewn nets, cultivated fruit
and vegetable gardens, made fresh pasta by hand and
baked golden loves of sesame-topped Italian bread in
igloo-shaped backyard ovens. For a time, paradise was
theirs. On this tour, we recreate the world that was and
showcase the hip and stylish neighborhood Little Italy
has become.
48
Your on-board, local expert will take you behind
the scenes for the ultimate look inside this thriving
community. Along the way, you’ll sample the flavors
of Italy as you enjoy a progressive lunch. You’ll go into
the kitchen at Il Monello Ristorante, one of Little Italy’s
best restaurants, where you’ll meet Chef Fabrizio.
He’ll introduce you to his way of cooking Italian
and give you an opportunity to taste everything from
Raspa Dura (an imported soft/ripe parmesan cheese)
to imported bone-in prosciutto. Lunch concludes with
authentic Italian gelato at Café Zucchero.

early settlers and founding families at the starting
point of your day tour exploring the heart and soul of
Los Angeles. You’ll be joined for the day by a local
guide who will take you on a journey to discover the
diverse cultures that are alive and well. Your guide

Sugar Hill neighborhood, Leimert Park, the Bradbury
Building, and visit the memorial of “Biddy Mason.”
Here you can pay tribute to her and her lifetime
achievements before heading to lunch at Dulan’s on

cooking at its finest. For over 25 years, they have been
serving some of the best Soul Food in Los Angeles with

Registration
Waiver
Procedures
All participants must sign the waiver on the registration
form. If attending a trip, participants will sign a waiver on
the day of the trip. OASIS reserves the right to decline a member’s participation in a class or a trip.
Note
Registrants and participants permit the taking of videotapes and photographs of themselves during
OASIS classes and events (for OASIS publicity use only). Members who do not wish to participate
should notify the photographer or staff.
Spouses/Family Members
If there are two members in one household, please complete two registration forms. Do not list two
people on one form.
Fees
A non-refundable $10 processing fee is charged one time each trimester when initially registering
for classes. All class fees and the processing fees must be paid at the time of registration. Make
checks payable to OASIS unless otherwise noted.
Class Refunds
Program fees are non-refundable unless OASIS cancels the program or if you have a medical
reason or jury duty (documentation must accompany request). OASIS must be notified before
the first class begins. If a refund is due, a refund request will be processed and issued within 10
business days. Different refund policies may apply for day trips or travel.
Trip Refunds
Day Trips - Cancellations are not refundable or transferable. If you are unable to attend, OASIS will
attempt to fill your spot. If OASIS is able to fill your spot, we will issue you a credit for the cost of
the trip, less a $15 trip processing fee. If we are unable to fill your spot, we will not be able to issue
you a credit for a trip. No refunds given for day of cancellations.
Overnight Trips - Please contact OASIS for specific details or refer to the trip brochure.
Returned Checks
If your check is returned by your bank for any reason, the amount of the check plus an additional
return check fee of $40 will be due and payable to OASIS.
Wait Lists
When a class reaches its maximum limit, a wait list is started. If there is a cancellation and a
vacancy becomes available, calls will be placed to those on the wait list in the order in which
registrations were received. If there is a fee for a wait list class or trip, you must pay for the class
immediately upon confirmation.
Attendance & Class Etiquette
If you register for a class, please attend. If you are not able to attend, please call OASIS. If you
miss one class in a series, there is no need to call. As a courtesy to the instructors and your
classmates, please arrive to class on time. If you are late, please enter the classroom quietly. Make
sure your cell phones are off or muted. Please don’t wear heavy perfumes or colognes.
Thank you for your continued participation. We truly appreciate all of our wonderful members and
