October 1991
Dear Members,
Well, I'm delighted to announce that the Draw for the 1950 80" has been most successful and was won
by a classic car enhusiast Gordon Nash (see photograph elsewhere) - indeed - a Rover enthusiast! A
report from Andrew Cameron follows.
1991 GRAND DRAW
Ai promoter of the above event I am pleased to report that the draw raised enough money to clear the loan,
and will also enable us to send some spares to Kagando - to maintain the One Ten we sent out there last
year.
I would like to thank Club members who helped in all sorts of ways in the preparation of the prize
Land Rover, with extra prizes and many other aspects of the exercise. The list below is in no particular
order, Andrew Cross, Andrew Stevens, David Bowyer, David Came, Derrey Ferdinando, Phillip and
Richard Rigdon. Most of the work was done in span/holiday time when they could have been involved
with activities to their own benefit.
Finally, thank you to all members who both bought and sold tickets. We're sorry only one person
could win the first prize. listed below are details of winners and prizes.

(And our thanksto Andrew for all his work as well - especially in sourcing andpreparingthe 80". Ed.)
ONE TEN FOR AFRICA While on the subject, and continuing our policy of being able to support the
vehicle we have sent out to Uganda, we have had a most generous gift of a WARWICK POWER
WASHER from the manufacturers - and we feel the best way of using this, and giving them he best
publicity possible, would be to take it to all the shows in 1992, and sell raffle tickets ONLY AT THESE
SHOWS. In this way we won't be pressurising Club members, and we will be gi ing classic car and off
road enthusiasts a chance to win a most useful tool.
GORDON BASHFORD
Many of you will have been sad to read recently of the death of Gordon Bashford. As design engineer for
Rover he played a major part in the chassis design of the Land Rover and in that of the Range Rover - and it
is remarkable to think that there has been so little change necessary to the original concept and design over
so many years. I understand he was also much involved with the mid-engined Rover sports car, and I
remember looking at it with a motor journalist and hearing him describe how good it was compared to the
&-type. One wonders whether there will ever be such long-lasting and innovative design again. His
inspiration will be sadly missed.
MALVERN MOTORING EVENT 6th October
Yet again a good turnout for this popular outdoor show, where it was good to see the Land Rover Series
Two Club in attendance as well. The following vehicles were present on the Club stand. Andrew Cross'
Rolls B40 81", Pat Caine's 1949 80", David Ferguson's 1949 80", Colin Pughs 1949 80" rolling chassis, my
own 1949 80", Sue Combridge's very original 1952 80", Ron Stamford's Military 86" and Pat Caine's V8
86". A very strong full grill 80" turnout (62%). Next year it would be good to see some 107/109" vehicles.

8r REAR SPRINGS (NARROW)
There have been some reports of rapid flattening of 80" rear springs. It is importait when the springs are
changed that the condition of the rear shock absorbers is checked. The correct original shock absorbers are
very stiff. Some of the cheaper pattern type available today are quite soft when compared to the genuine
ones, which could lead to a shorter spring life. John Smith (see inside front cover) has some original shock
Peter Hughes
absorbers available I believe.
SPARES MOAN
Yet again only a few people were interested in the alloy castings for the Capstan Wimch guide bar. They are
not available elsewhere and are of top q :y. They are being offered at cost! (originalprice was £60
each. Contact Phil Gannon. Milstones, .,ow Grove, Washlord, Somerset. (0984) 40892 for full detaor)
Why then the lack of interest? Some people comment that prices are expensive for some parts relating to
Series Ones. However, if you cross relate them to 2A or Series 3 prices they are usually comparable if not
cheaper. The days of the pletiftbl and cheap early Land Rover parts have gone, I'm afraid.
TOWING CARAVANS WITH LAND ROVERS
Those of you who are members of the Caravan Club will have read about possible problems faced by Land
Rover owners. The handbooks of some modern caravans state that they are designed for towing by "carderived vehicles".
Phil Newland of the Southern Rover Owners Club has been following this up with caravan manufacturers
and found that they did not recommend their caravans with a Land Rover (Swift). This is because (he
quotes) the Land Rover is a chassis based commercial vehicle, and that this type of vehicle can transmit
shock loadings through to the chassis of the caravan in a much more intense manner than a passenger car.
This could induce chassis filure if used severely. This applies to aluminium and galvanised chassis.
(Swifts we on aluminium chassis). An exchange of letters with them ended with their final reply summary
"we are unable to recommend towing with this type of vehicle and stress the consequences if used severely.
After the National Rally Phil received another letter from them which said in part. "I'he moden 4x4
vehicle, essentially of a private car nature, but with of road capability and constructed in such a way that
any suspension induced shocks are adequately controlled and absorbed by the structure of the vehicle, is a
perfectly acceptable and capable towing vehicle, suitable in all respects for towing Swift caravans. With
regard to the vehicles ability to travel off road, caution must be exercised in this regard when towing as the
ground clearance of the towing vehicle considerably exceeds that of the towed caravan. Towing by a rigid
chassis commercial vehicle should be avoided other than in the case of towing by a recovery vehicle where
the distance travelled would be restricted."
Phil's advice, given in the Caravan Club magazine, was to write to the makers of any caravan you propose
buying, and obtain their approval for your combination if you tow with anything other than a standard car.
It seems that the modern coil-sprung Land Rover products we OK, but no specific answer was given.
(Write to the makers of the caravan - not all dealers will have read the small print in the handbooks, and
some may not be bothered even if they have, and may blithely say anything can tow the caravans they sell.
There is, however, a new towing plate on the market, with a built-in shock absorber - at least rm sure I've
read about it, and how much smoother towing is with it. However, I cant find details anywhere. Surely
someone of you will have all the information Send it to me and rll put in in the next Newsletter which will
be coming out before Christmas. Yes, reallyl!

THE 15 CWT BROCKHOUSE TRAILER
From the beginning the Land Rover was seen as a versatile farmers vehicle, and this obviously included
towing trailers. The Rover Co. was not slow to realise this, and quickly marketed their own tbafler. The
trailer was manufactured by JBrockbousc &Co Ltd of West Bromwich, but marketed by Rover as one of a
range of accessories. It was advertised as being "for the farmer, the market gardener and for general use."
There is not a lot of information available, but by browsing through parts catalogues, handbooks and sales
leaflets I have come up with the following details. If you can add more, then we would be glad to hear
from you.
The first reference to the Brockhouse trailer is in a November 1949 price list, when it was available for £75,
aprice which was to rise to£90 by August 1952. This is expensive when it is compared to arou d£55 for
a Land Rover at the time.
The trailer body is all steel with 18 gauge sides and a 16 gauge floor. The steel obviously tends to rust especially along the bottom outside edges where a fold of the panel forms a natural water trap. this may
account for the relatively low survival rate. The body size: 6ft x 3fl 2in x lft 6in sides, and the rest of the
construction consists of a l1" square tube axle, 8" brakes and Land Rover rims shod with 600 x 16 tyres
(so no extra spare needed to be carried) al being finished in "green to match the Land Rover" although the
advertising does not mention whether this would have been light green or bronze green - most likely the
latter. A feature of the trailer sides are the diagonal pressings, and the cross pressing in both the front panel
and the detachable tailgate. The trailer was attached to the Land Rover by a swan neck design 2 inch ball
coupling. (This will fit a modern 50mm towball - but loosely. But not the other way aroutd. The 2 inch
towball is completely spherical, whereas the 50mm towball has aflat on the top.)
All the trailers were given serial numbers starting with BT8 (Brockhouse Trailers model no. 8?), followed
by a four or five figure number. Minor changes were made to the brake shoes and back plates at BTS.9301,
and many more changes came in at BT8.12325. I will therefore refer to trailers up to BT8.12324 as
"Early", and the subsequent ones as "Late".
To identify early or late Brmckhouse Trailers:
Up to BT8.12324
BTS.12325 onwards
Early tow hitch (see above)
Hexagon headed screw in hub grease cap
Grease nipples in end of spring eye pins
Late tow hitch (see above)
Push in round hub grease cup
No nipples in spring pins (though some may have
grease nipples in spring eye itself)
Triangular reflective trailer plate
Plain shackle plates
'""'reflective Trailer plate
Shaped cast spring shackle plates
"Y'type stop/tail lamps - up to 1954.
Round stop/tail lamps - most also fitted with
various other lights 1955-8
round reflectors
Small round reflectors 1955 on
It is very difficult to put dates to any of these changes, but as late as July 1956 only the early type of trailer
was referred to. Some parts catalogues even list slight lighting variations of the early model right up to
1958. By the days of the early Series 2 Land Rover only the late trailer is listed.
Some of the trailers I have seen have been fitted with tubular grab handles either side of the tow hitch, but
most of these were ex Home Office and some are also fitted with hoodsticks and a tilt. There was certainly
a version used by Civil Defence to catry cables and equipment for laying temporary telephone lines in
59/4
emergencies. I have also seen one with an eye type coupling instead of the 2 inch ball type, and several
with a pair of safety chains attached to a metal block under the tow hitch in place of the usual cast rest.
Those may well have attached to the outer holes of the Land Rover tractor plate to pervent the trailer jackknifing.
The following Brockhouse Trailers am currently on the Club Vehicle Register.

Does this indicate that at least 16,000 trailers were produced? There are also a number of Brockhouse
Trailers existing which have lost their original brass plate showing the serial number.
If there are any additions or amendments to the above list, then please let us know so that we can update the
register. Advise us of the serial number, or whether the trailer is early or late if the number is missing.
TRACK ROD ENDS
At the National ly a member came to the Club stand complaining of a clunk at the front when cornering.
After investigation of the "U"bolts, spring hangers and shackle bolts, suspicion fell on the track rod ends.
After disconnection from the hub we found that
the pinch bolts were not gripping the track rod
ends, allowing them still to turn. On removal
the track rods ends to the drag link were found
to have a reduced shank, this making it
impossible to tighten the pinch bolt inthe
clamp. This is extremely dangerous , because
if there is any wear or free play the thread will
strip in the tube, and consequently there will be
no steering. These track rod ends had been
fitted by a garage a few weeks previously.
When replacing trck rod ends please ensure

diameter as the outside of the threaded portion.
SILICON BRAKE FLUID
I am interested to hear from anyone who has experienced problems with their braking system after using
silicon fluid. I know of two instances of difficulties with master cylinders and wish to know if there are
any more. (Ed. Silicon brake fluid isoften recommendedfor classic cars because not being hygroscopic it
can't absorb water, and therefore won't deteriorate as normal brake fluid does, and when spilt it doesn't
damage the paintwork. And yes, Ihave hadproblemswith my 80" mastercylinder - which was overhauled
with new rubberseals, and the rest of the system was new - when I iUed it with siliconfluid. What happens
isthat the system tends to pressurise with use, and eventually the vehicle comes to a standstill However,
slackening off the adjusting rod by a greater amount than the handbook suggests seem to have cured the
problem. IWe not been able to work out whether siliconfluid has any bearing on this problem, so heitate
to blame it. The brakescontinue to work effectively).

DANISH COACHBUILT 8Oft
(see photographs on page 6)
This vehicle was ir'norted intc 1 rtar in July 1950 as a standard 80" with soft top. It was
converted in 1950/51 by Frederikssund Vogn Karosserifabrik - a Danish coachbuildinb company. Only 2
vehicles were converted - the other is still running and is owned by a Land Rover dealer in Kalundborg,
East Denmark.
The owner of OE 20 646 is Claus A Kjoeller - one of the five main organisers of the Danish Land
Rover Rally. Both axles, engine and gearbox are original. As Claus is 6ft 7ins tall and of considerable
stature, he had to open the rear hinged door each time he wishes to change gear! (left hand drive vehicle
with the clutch pedal nearest the door). This must have resulted in "no hands steering" gear changes. He
has since moved the drivers seat back, making gear changing a bit easier.
The current mileage is 140,000, and the vehicle was originally designed and converted as a Hose
Tender - carrying hoses and fitting, but no pump or water tank was ever fitted. The coachbuilding company
used the design of the 80" StationWagon as the basis for this conversion.
COUNTRY VEHICLES
A new service for buyers of Four Wheel Drive vehicles has recently gone on-line. A single
telephone call links prospective buyers throughout the British Isles with Country Vehicles central computer,
and callers are given full details of vehicles which meet their particular requirements FREE OF CHARGE!
They make a once only charge for the sellers of 4 x 4 vehicles (from £14.50 upwards depending on
vehicle value), and will advertise until the vehicle is sold. The numbers for buyers is 0298 815815 and for
sellers 0298 815000. It will be interesting to see how it develops. Mind you, the greatest selection of
Series Ones and spares for them can be found in this Newsletter - if you can cope with the delays!
LATE AGAIN!! Yes, we are late again with this Newsletter, for there just isn't enough time in the day to
get it all done. And then when everything is set up and just about ready to roll, Sod's Law swoops
from a great height and we get buried. At least that's what it felt like when an un-backed-up disc was
somehow corrupted and I lost eight pages of text for ever. Yes - you've guessed it - it wasn't the easy
copy-typing pages of reports, but all the For Sales and Wanted Ad's which went, and they take an
age and a half to type in. So please be patient and forgiving of any mistakes - there just hasn't been
time to do some really accurate proof-reading.
Member Andrew McGreal has asked that his name be deleted from the Rescue Scheme because he has

The 24 hour crossing from Harwich to
Gothenberg passed uneventfully, especially as the
North Sea was so calm, and having landed I
headed south towards Malino. Swedish main
roads are mainly single carriageway with hard
shoulder and speed limit of 55 mph, and driving
in this beautiful country is a pleasure as the roads
are quiet and most drivers observe the limit.
After signing in I met the only two English/
Weshmen on the site - "lightweight" Ray from
Croydon and Edward with his diesel 90 from
Swansa.
The official opening of "Landsarrangement" 91
took place in the huge marquee, and a variety of
events were planned for each day. On the first
day we chose the Gymkhana which took place in
a local quarry. The course was set out with
plastic poles and included a short timed "island

amusing part of this event was when the driver
was blindfolded and had to try to position a front
tyre in a sunken tyre approx 50 yards from the
start. If you misjudged, as I did, you came to no
harm hitting the sandy wall of the quarry.

the Concoum dElegance in Ronne and Svaneke.
The 75 vehicle convoy between the two towns
was a sight to behold.
The Jubilee trophy was organised for the
Thursday and took place in the Military Area a
short drive away. Each team of three to five
vehicles had to set up a short off-road course for
the other teams to drive. An hours time limit
with points lost for hitting a cane were the only
rules! The day lasted from 10 am to 1120pm
and was enjoyed by all.
Friday's Supertial (a rough RTV Trial) was
rounded off by the Grand Dinner and prizegiving. I was fortunate to be awarded the prize
for the best vehicle on site (No Ken Wheelwright
there this year!) The Rally would not have been
staged were it not for the hard work put in by
members of the Danish Land Rover Club. A
special vote of thanks must go to the five man
organisers - Claus K Kjoell,i,,Johr Karlb&., Hans
George Novrman, Elven Andersen and Jesse

This most enjoyable holiday was completed by a
three day tour of central southern Sweden, before
heading for Oothenberg and home.

THE WAR OF THE ROSES
LAND ROVER STYLE!
Come mid-July we were making our way to
Cumbria. The destination was the ARC War of
the Roses, and along with two other Series I
Land Ravers we had entered a Series I Club
Team. Against us were teams from Yorks ROC,
Red Rose LROC, North Wales LRC, Hants and
Berks ROC, Pennine LRC and Cumbria ROC.
For the Series I Club, John Wheeler and Ross
Adamson entered John's winch equipped 86",
Mitch Whiting and myself were in my 88" and
having been let down on the wednesday before
the event, red Rose member Pete Wright talked
Carl Spindler into using his 80".
The event kicked off pretty early sunday morning
with the teams lining up for the start on the fell.
Organiser Peter Hartley taped an envelope to
each team's lead vehicle bonnet, and at the
appointed time we could open them. Ours was
open in a flash and we were poring over the map,
finding the map reference and on our way...
Things got off to a disastrous start because in our
haste we hadnft noticed a map reference in huge
numbers on the back of the envelope, and
promptly spent most of the time allotted-for the
first task searching for it in completely the wrong
place. When we did find it we started, but ran
out of time - thus incurring a penalty score. We

The next was a straightforward trailer reversing
manoeuvre, and again, without problems, we
were slower than some teams. After this we had
to tow and winch a log around a marked course

One disadvantage was that we only had one
antiquated winch between the three vehicles
(although it was the correct period accessory for a

The other problem was that the winch design
meant that it will only unspool when the tension

LAND ROVER 45th ANNIVERSARY - 1993
We all enjoyed the celebrations for the 35th and 40th anniversaries of the launch of the Land Rover, and
many are already talking about the 45th! Although this is not until 30th April 1993, time will soon pass
and plans must be made, and so we welcome ideas and offers to help organise the event.
Initial thoughts are along these lines:
1.Event to be jointly run with 1947-1951 Land Rover Register.
2. To be held an May Day Bank Holiday weekend: 31st April - 2nd May 1993
(The nearest long weekend to the actual date)
3. Site in the midlands area to give relatively easy access from most parts of the county
4. Event based on social campina/caravan weekend with plenty of time to meet, talk and socialise.
5. Possible visits to nearby local attractions (stately homes/museums etc) to give wives and families
something to do.
6. Concours d'Elegance
7. Vehicle gymkhana or easy RTV trial (nc- Is planning and running)
8. Marquee for refreshments/beer tent as social centre.

show it had a few teething problems, so itwas
just as well Jerry was there to keep it in order,
(Ed. We had wondered what had happened to this
vehicle - found by Andrew Cameron for the AA
for this restoration). Finally, my 80" NVU 490
(photo h.) original scratches and all, also enjoyed
the party, so too my Series III which worked hard
as the Club Shop.
Our thanks to Astle Park organiser Bryn Mallion
for allowing us to take part and for presenting us
with the handsome brass plaques. To Andrew
Cross for supplying the goods and bunting, to
Mike for tireless work and to all of you who
entered so well into the party spirit. The only one
missing was Ken Poole - he had wanted the Club
to enter this show for some time - I hope we did
him proud. You'll have to book in early next year
- it really is aterrific show.

At 7am on Sunday morning only a few diehard
spectators were around with everyone else trying
to get registered in time. Because NCJ was built
in 1955 we were 12th to start out of 120 - the
oldest first, which was a Rover Eight 1920, and
we were tucked in between a Rolls Royce 20/25
and a Mercedes Benz 190SC.
After a hot coffee we were off, with our route
moment missing the first clue, only to solve it on
our way back to Syon Park.
We left at 1 minute intervals, so it wasn't long
before we were overtaking the odd Jag. or two,
and in time we were overtaken by the odd bubble
car - it wasn't a race, just a fun run. Boy, did we
have fun! It's amazing how many times you have

B+H really did us proud for lunch at Box Hill,
Surrey, all sot up in a marquee. After lunch and a
chat getting to know each other we were off
again, back to Syon Park. The whole event was
filmed by Sada Video, so every now and then you
would turn a corner only to find a camera
pointing at you.
We we arrived back it was a complete contrast to
the start, The place was absolutely choc a bloc
with people and cars and as we entered the Park
we drove down a roped off section leading to the
finish. My moment of glory - lined both sides
with hundreds of people, earners clicking - fame
at last! With a cheer from the crowd we were
announced over the tannoy.
We handed in our questionnaire and went to look
at the rest of the cars. Unfortunately we were not
in the first three, but nevermind, it was a great
day, and we did get a certificate for finishing.
T"he next day I phoned the organiser to thank
them, and told them I would be writing to the
Club newsletter, and he said to tell everyone we
are all welcome next time. (What? Over 1,000
Series Ones!! Ed.)
I'd like to thank B+H again for a really well mn
event, and for not being snobby about Land
Revers.

This is the 3rd year that the Club has attended this

Following a -minor hiccough when Mr Cross

(senior) had to drive from Bristol with thecaravan
awning (left out after getting wet at Yeovil) the
stand was soon set up. Who said Dad didn
have their uses? We were busy throughout the
five days with many draw tickets and shop items
sold. John Parker also had an excellent display of
Land Rover models on show. I especially liked
his hand built centre steer model in fantastic
detail.
After fitting a new water pump to the caravan, tea
and coffee flowed in an endless stream - 18 pints
of milk were consumed in all. And I must thank
the unnamed member who donated some cans of
lager - they didn't last long!!
During the show, member Terry Quick, from
Waggonworks Trailers, donated a crosscountry
tyre for the half-scale Land Rover (now we've a
set of 4!). Waggonworks Trailers can be

ALAN YOUNG first met his 86" BJM 520
when his employer bought it as a recovery
vehicle in 1967. When it 'died' in '79 he bought it
for £30 and set about a lengthy restoration,
passing its MOT in 1987, and staying in daily
up of Showmanl's Engines fit up after dark isa
particularly notable feature of this show.
On Sunday morning Andrew Cross and myself
went Llama hunting (not the animal, but the
prototype replacement for the 101" Land Rover).
It had been spotted by a club member, but had
'escaped' when we tried to find it. What a pity!
Many thanks to all who displayed their vehicles,
and to Andrew and Gavin for their organising.

"By spring 1991 it was looking a bit down and

The competition was much stiffer as expected

The Centre is on the outskirts of the
delightful village of Zeal Monachorum and
includes a classroom, reception area, and a
workshop. Much emphasis is put on the
theory side early each morning with a lecture
by Keith Hart. These lectures are
given
highly informative with time given to answer
questions from the floor. No one is allowed
out on the course unless they have not only
attended a lecture, but also had their vehicle
prepared
and checked over by both David
Keith. This ensures the high safety
standards set by the school.

OFF-ROADER'S PARADISE
A CHANCE FOR YOU TO "PRACTICE WHAT THEY PREACH"BACK TO SCHOOL
AN 'EXPERIENCE' YOU WON'T FORGET
Itinerary for Training at the
Centre for a Two-Day Course
Day One starts at 900am for signing in and
coffee. Following introductions. Keith Hart
takes the lecture in the classroom. consis-
Five years ago David Bowyer founded
Britain's first Off-Road Driving School in the
heart of Devon. and since those early
beginnings a programme of continual
development to the site with additional
facilities has made the Centre easily the
most comprehensive training area in the
country
The Course, some one and a half miles in
length, is laid out on an area of about 10
acres, part of which is a hillside. During
these years. earthmoving machinery has
been a regular sight on the course carrying
out the necessary maintenance repairing
damage to the many tracks, watercourses
and obstacles caused by erosion of the
thousands of wheels negotiating the rugged
complex
Many new hazards have been constructed
using thousands of tons of stone and rock
from the Centre's own quarry. The most
recent additions have been the forming of
the 'Staircase' and 'Devil's Slope', both built
into the hillside to provide yet two more
challenging and demanding sections, but not
damaging. The previous main construction
was 'Dill Lock Hill'. And we all know how that
got its name!
The process of time has allowed the
complex to 'mature', helped by the yearly
programme of tree and shrub planting. More
than three thousand have been planted to
gie areas of additional woodland and an
open parkland on the hillside. This 'cover'
has greatly enhanced the complex, to say
nothing of the Centre's part towards the
environment and wildlife. The Centres
Jungle area now feels, looks and smells like
a jungle!
As David Bowyer's Off-Road Centre starts
its sixth year. they can humbly boast without
anyexaggeration that theyhavesuccessfully
run over two hundred fully fledged Off-Road
Training Courses for over 1.0(0 clients
bringing every conceivable type of 4x4
off-road vehicle, from Suzukis to Unimogs.
Though without doubt the majorityof clients'
vehicles are Land Rovers. Defenders, Range
Rovers and Disoverys. often less than a year
old, But it's wonderful to see Series Is and Its
safely, their 4x4 vehicies in some of the most
varying terrain to be found anywhere in one
safe controlled area, bearing in mind that it
is an 'All Weather' course so that sessions
can continue throughout the year. Indeed
last winter, the Centre was running several
courses for one of the Water Companies
during the time of snow and ice in February.
David and Keith's personal and friendly
method of teaching both in the classroom
and out on the course ensures that their
clients have an interesting and informative
two or three days. And they make sure that
their pupils get heaps of fun out of it as well'
It goes without saying that many of the
courses are specifically geared to suit
special groups of clients who are either
embarking on an expedition, holiday abroad
or working with Land Rovers as part of their
profession.
With these special groups in mind. David's
Off-Road Centre goes to great lengths to
provide the finest opportunity to practise
driving off road in virtually every possible
situation that they are likely to encounter
anywhere in the world.
Not only do pupils learn what their
capabilities are as a driver, but without doubt
they end up having the highest regard for the
astonishingcapabilityoftheir vehicleswhen
asked to negotiate the varied terrain at the
Centre. Every client on every course gains a
new 'experience'.
Over fifty obstacles of varying terrain have
been built to further enhance the training
facilities in the natural valley and hillside.
These obstacles include side slopes, guleys,
ascents and descents with gradients up to
100% (45 degrees) Further hazards are
designed to test the ability of the driver to
'read' the ground over which it is intended to
pass. These obstacles include ditches,
ridges, hollows, logs, shingle, rocky climbs,
potholed areas, exceedingly bumpy ground,
long steep slopes, the latter being gradual
and otherwise!
Probably most important of all for many
visitors, they have gone to great lengths to
ensure

ting of one and a half hours of theory
covering every facet of off-road driving, from
attempting thick mud to wading deep water.
Keith's skills in teaching in the classroom by
using both the blackboard and display items
laid out, amply and easily put over the
easiest and safest way to drive in difficult
terrain.
Keith Hart, co-author of 'The Handbook of
Off-Road Driving' is more than qualified to
teach both beginners and professionals
alike His style ensures that his audience
understands quite clearly the points he is
putting over, and invites questions from the
floor. Much emphasis is put on this theory
side as both David and Keith firmly believe
that both discussion and preparation are
very important, BEFORE going into the
rough, especially for those who are new to
off reading.
Following Keith's lecture, their clients are
led out to the vehicle preparation area to
check over fully the four vehicles present
Fitting wading plugs, checking fluid levels,
lowering Lyre pressures, waterproofing electrios, securing batteries, removing spare
wheels from bonnets and so on.
David and Keith then lead at random the
first two vehicles out on to the training area
by sitting in the passenger seats in order to
advise their pupils on gear selection, speed
andangleofapproach, andthendepartureof
each and every obstacle on the course. In
reality they take their pupils twothirds
around the course, then double back for the
remaining vehicles so that as little time as
possible is lost.
By lunchtime. most will have driven around
the basic part of the course twice. After
lunch, which is taken at the local Leisure
Centre, thedrivingcontinuesthroughoutthe
afternoon, perfecting the skills learnt during
the morning. Again at random, part way
through this session, the pupils are accompanied to the special sections, for instance.

clients travel to England from both Europe
and further afield to specially attend one of
David's courses,
David Bowyer along with Co-Instructor
Keith Hart normally take a maximum of five
pupils using four vehicles. This allows for
doubling up - father and son for instance, in
the stuff that all Off Readers love, but
believe me, all Off-Road Vehicles detest it!
But l am pleased to say that their many water
sections have been finally sorted out both by
design and by maturing with age Most are
set to give normal maximum wading depth of
around 20 inches ( Wm. All the sections can
have this depth varied by the use of a built-in
pumping and drainage overflow system. The
