The Spirit of St. Mary’s December 2013 A publication of St. Mary’s Foundation St. Mary’s Foundation’s mission is to improve and enhance services provided for patients and residents of St. Mary’s Health Care System and to ensure these services are available to those who need them most by providing opportunities for giving. Many donors give to help our children. One such child who has been treated at St. Mary’s is Gibson Williams, a 3-year-old survivor of a congenital heart condition: he was born with half a heart. By six months of age, he had been through three surgeries and had suffered a stroke. Today, with the care of his loving family, his doctors, and his therapists at St. Mary’s Outpatient Rehabilitation Center, Gibson is thriving. His mother, Allison, shares their family’s experience in a video about Gibson on St. Mary’s website at www.stmarysathens.org/. Compassion, Care, Integrity and Faith Dear Donors and Friends of St. Mary’s, The Foundation is an important part of the St. Mary’s team, helping to keep our ministry in the forefront of health care in our region. By envisioning our future and working strategically to make it a reality, St. Mary’s Foundation helps to make certain that St. Mary’s mission will prosper for years to come. For that I am very grateful. My sincere thanks to our Foundation Boards of Directors – both in Athens and Greensboro, the Committees, Young Professional Advisory Board, employees and volunteers, whose ongoing compassion, stewardship and commitment are the bedrock of our system. Our donor’s wishes are of paramount importance to us. All donors have the opportunity to designate their monies to various funds established through the Foundation, such as Hospice, Good Samaritan Hospital, Children’s Service’s and many others. Donated funds are utilized as directed by our donors to improve and enhance services and facilities. I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to all our many donors, supporters and volunteers! You are vital to our ongoing efforts to extend our Mission and Values to our community, allowing us to bring essential new services and build for future needs. This support gives us confidence that we will not only succeed, but thrive. 2013 has been an exciting year! It has brought significant growth; most notably, the opening on November 25th of new St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital. Through the generosity of the community and the work of our Foundation, St. Mary’s will continue to enhance healthcare facilities, access and services in the greater Greene County area. Our ongoing capital campaign has already raised $6 million, with a goal of $8 million, and is providing technologies rarely found in rural critical access hospitals. Through our outstanding events over $297,000 has been raised to support the many needs of our patients in the community. These events include the “Take a Chance for Kids” Raffle, Golf Tournament, BreastFest, Bulldogs Battling Breast Cancer, the Annual Gala and other events. These events continue to grow and truly make a difference to our patients. We are thankful to the supporters and organizers or these events, without which we could not have achieved such great success. Through partnerships with our communities, donors and employees, the Foundation has endowed St. Mary’s with modern facilities, equipment and programs. Some of the disbursements of philanthropic funds for 2013 include: • • • • • • • Renovations and furniture replacements for Hospice House and Highland Hills Village Fetal Monitors and upgrades for the Family Birth Center BiPap (respiratory equipment) for Hospice House On-campus emergency response vehicle for the Emergency Department Scales for heart failure patients Hemachron point-of-care blood testing for Cardiac Cath Lab Financial assistance for Hospice patients in need Together, we will make a difference and ensure St. Mary’s tradition of excellence, quality, service, and compassionate health care continues for you and our community for generations to come. Your energy, enthusiasm, and financial support truly make a difference in all we do. On behalf of everyone at St. Mary’s and the communities we serve, I thank you. Dear Friends and Supporters of St. Mary’s Foundation, This has been an exciting, challenging and successful year for St. Mary’s Foundation. Beginning in late 2012, a new Foundation structure was established for St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Greensboro, Georgia with a Board of Directors and Committees that have been actively working on the Capital Campaign for our new hospital. These dedicated Board and Committee members are successfully leading the capital campaign to raise $8 million to support furnishings, equipment and technology. At the time of writing this letter to you, the Campaign has reached over 75% to its goal. I would like to thank our entire Board and Committee members for their tireless and continuing service to St. Mary’s. St. Mary’s Foundation’s mission is to improve and enhance services provided for all patients and residents of St. Mary’s and to ensure these services are available to those who need them most by providing giving opportunities to the community. Achieving our mission could not be possible without your support. I want to thank each and every one of our donors – community members, employees, physicians and business – who support St. Mary’s. This support comes not only in monetary donations, but gifts of time and talent by serving on a Board or Committee or being an Auxiliary member. I ask you to consider an additional way to support St. Mary’s Foundation through legacy giving. Legacy is defined as “what someone is remembered for or what they left behind that is revered and has influenced the present day”. Your future gift to The Legacy Society can help support and sustain St. Mary’s for generations to come. Please also take a moment to review the many donors who continually support the mission of St. Mary’s through our 1938 Society, Good Samaritan Society (physician giving) in Athens. In addition, the Founder’s Society, The 1949 Society, Business Partners, and Friends of Good Samaritan in Greensboro. A special note of thanks goes to our many employees at both hospitals who work so hard for St. Mary’s and yet still give to support the cause, L.I.G.H.T.S. (Lifelong Giving Helps the Spirit). Our employees and Auxiliary volunteers are among our most valuable assets and we treasure their contributions. It has been my pleasure to serve as the 2012-2013 Chair of St. Mary’s Foundation and with confidence turn the leadership reins for 2014 over to Seth Waltman, Incoming Chair. The Foundation, through successful partnerships with our community and our employees, has endowed St. Mary’s with state of the art facilities, equipment and programs, supporting St. Mary’s in being at the forefront of our region’s health care system, both in the Athens and Greensboro area. It truly takes all of us working together to provide for the health care needs of our community, especially with the changing landscape of health care in our country. Feel better her Best wishes for a healthy, happy and peaceful New Year. With Best Regards, Don McKenna, FACHE President and CEO F Rhodes McLanahan, Chair St. Mary’s Foundation Board of Directors Dear Supporters of St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital, The St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Foundation Board would like to provide you with an update on the progress of the new Hospital which opened on November 25th, and thank you for the amazing support the Hospital has received. Top Clockwise: Good Samaritan as it begins… Montez Carter, Riezl Baker, Larry Kurlander, Marguerite McInteer, Jamie Reynolds, Frances Strickland, Harold Reynolds, and Joe Gorman Montez Carter, President, Good Samaritan Hospital, Wendy and Richard O’Toole, Don McKenna, President and CEO St. Mary’s Jep Pound, Brasfield and Gorrie, LLC adjusting the Capital Campaign Thermometer Montez Carter, President, Good Samaritan Hospital signs the beam at the “Topping Out” Event on April 19th, 2013 One of the many beautiful displays of art at Good Samaritan Kids Campaign on July 27th at Lake Oconee Village Shopping Center L-R Colin Garofalo, Ollie Bragg, Remi Baker, Presley Bragg, Riezl Baker (Good Samaritan Foundation Board member), Joshua Garofalo, Stuart Baker St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Foundation Board L-R: Dene Channell, Jack Brown, Mike Lynch, Tom Clare, Freddy Meindl, Joe Gorman, Riezl Baker, Jenny Bedell, Rick Wolfert, Avis Williams, Mimi Vickers (not pictured: Fran D’Antonio and John Pastorello) St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital The 75,000 square foot, state-of-the-art Critical Access Hospital is staffed by an experienced group of Board Certified Emergency Physicians, and will significantly enhance the delivery of high quality health care services to our community. In recent months, a number of physicians and specialties have been added and efforts will continue to attract new physicians to the staff. St. Mary’s welcomes all physicians in the area to apply for medical staff privileges. The Good Samaritan Foundation Board and its Committees have been very hard at work over the last year. The not-for-profit, faith-based Hospital asked the community for support by raising $8 million in philanthropic funds, or about 15% of the total cost of the project. These funds assist in equipping and furnishing the hospital in a “best in class” manner, what the community told us they would like for their hospital. To date, over $6.2 million has been raised from more than 490 donors with the funds going to acquire such state-of-the-art equipment. We are at 75% plus of the goal. Thank you for this support! Although we have made great progress, we still have work to do. The hospital still needs our help in equipping and furnishing the 3rd Operating Room (critical for recruiting medical specialist to the areas); the Nuclear Medicine Room (a medical specialty involving the application of radioactive substances in the diagnosis and treatment of disease); and, the Minor Procedures Room (used in the operating suite for such procedures as cataracts and minor surgery). Please consider donating to St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Foundation – it will truly make a difference for health care in our community. Pledges may be made over 5 years and are fully tax deductible to the extent allowed. Donations of all amounts are appreciated and will be recognized. To make a donation visit www.stmarysgoodsam.org or contact St. Mary’s Foundation at 706-389-3926. A native of Metter, Georgia, Adam is the newest member of the 2014 Foundation Board and the upcoming Chair of the Young Professionals Advisory Board. He and his beautiful wife, Beth, have been married 13 years and reside in Athens with their 9 year-old daughter Lanier and 6 year-old son, Price. Beth is a beloved teacher at Athens Academy and both Beth and Adam are active members at Athens First United Methodist Church. Adam is also a member of St. Mary’s Young Professional Advisory Board and Director of Sales for TCC Verizon Wireless serving 9 stores from Statesboro to Athens. Adam’s goal as a Sales Director is to build business to business channels in all of the communities he touches. He has designed a Concierge Program, catering to the needs of customers by coming to them versus standing in line at the store. He has yet another goal to create a “Culture of Good” by teaming business with charities and schools alike. These Verizon stores donate $10 for every phone activated and $1 for every accessory purchased in the store to a charity of the customer’s choice. Adam’s generous and compassionate heart is an incredible gift to St. Mary’s and the communities in which he serves. In addition to serving as a business leader, Adam was a 2010 LEAD Athens graduate, 2010 Athens Banner Herald Bright Star, and 2005 Classic City Kiwanis President. Adam said, “I knew I had to help in any way I could” in regards to St. Mary’s Children’s Specialty Clinic and the services provided. His heart is drawn sincerely and empathetically. The day Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005 was devastating for many including Adam and Beth. Their storm however was the loss of their little boy. He had been born with a severe heart defect and had seen different specialists across the country. Out of the storm of their lives, Adam and Beth bring hope with their service and kindness to St. Mary’s and our community. Giving Societies Established in 2005, The 1938 Society is a philanthropic group of individuals who have come together with a shared commitment to the continual enhancement of patient care and service quality at St. Mary’s. The 1938 Society is open to those individuals pledging a minimum of $9,690 within a five-year period to strengthen St. Mary’s facilities and services. The 1938 Society name commemorates the year in which the Sisters came to Athens, at the request of area leaders, to reopen St. Mary’s. The society supports today’s leaders who represent those same values. The 1938 Society Members Bernadette and Gilles Allard Mr. and Mrs. C.
