M zi a g a ne From the Director Pat McCafferty Vice-President... T he summer issue of Kamm’s Corners Magazine is always an opportunity to look forward and back. What strikes me this year looking back is the extreme weather we have endured the last few months, from torrential rains to searing heat, and back again. Visitors to The Hooley on Kamm’s Corners™ suffered through heavy rain throughout the day, but we still enjoyed good crowds and plenty of fun. Thanks again for coming out. Save the date for the third annual Hooley on May 13th, 2012. Heavy rain through much of spring delayed planting of crops, and therefore, also the produce offerings at the Kamm’s Corners Farmers Market. But the produce is rolling in now, and several hundred people visit the market each week to shop their favorite vendors. Also offered are meat, cheese, eggs, baked goods, prepared jams, salsas, and oils, and lots of other good stuff. If you haven’t been there, you are missing a neighborhood gem – now in its fifth year! Our final Asphalt Cinema of the season takes place at Impett Park on Friday, August 19th. We will again combine forces with West Park Early Childhood PTA. They received a Neighborhood Connections grant to offer a Safety Fair that will feature free bike helmets and other attractions. See the story on page 7. Kudos to the West Park Kiwanis for another fine Independence Day Parade! They asked me to thank Kamm’s Plaza management for the continued use of their parking lot for staging purposes. Great job everybody. Remember to register for the Cleveland Heroes Run taking place September 18th. In addition to the 5K run, there is a 2K walk. Great cause – why not get a little exercise and support the families of our fallen neighborhood heroes? Story on page ?? Finally, I want to give a little “shout out” to our neighborhood bars and restaurants. Each of them continue to host and promote charitable causes that benefit countless neighborhood based as well as national charities, and also tons of little benefits for very local causes. It’s your business that enables them to do so. Please support your local hospitality establishments, and all of our merchants. Enjoy the rest of the summer, and as always, let us know how we’re doing. George Pofok Treasurer... Secretary... Rick Kolar Colleen Gilson Trustees... After braving the torrential downpours, we were hit by the heat wave, and now we’re rounding third and heading home. It sure was fun while it lasted, as are all summers in West Park, marked by block parties, festivals, and gatherings in our wonderful neighborhood parks. Although it may seem that way, we are not done yet. There are a ton of wonderful events remaining this year. The 10th Annual Heroes Run comes to us on September 18th. One of our many signature races/walks. From the AJ Schroeder Run to the St. Mark Run for the Arts, or the WPCA Patriot Walk, we have everything you need to get out and enjoy our wonderful community. I could never put in words the unbelievable teams of volunteers who work tirelessly to put these great events together. Their passion and commitment to our neighborhoods and their respective causes is simply unmatched in the City of Cleveland. Thank you. We also have the St. Mary’s Romanian Festival on Warren Road the weekend of August 19th. What a fantastic demonstration of strong roots and proud heritage so consistent throughout Ward 19. The food, music, dancing, and more food continues to impress not only our neighbors but our region. Not to be considered competition, but we have a new festival coming to West Park on September 3rd and 4th. The first annual Greek Festival will be held in and around the Kamm’s Corners Cretan Center located 5 across from Walgreens at 3853 W. 168th, facing the Kamm’s Corner Farmers Market. Please plan on stopping, eating, and dancing to make this first year a success and ensure future events. The decorative crosswalks are done on Lorain Avenue. I think all are very pleased to see traffic moving again and the lights back to normal. What a great addition. The feeling of neighborhood and pedestrian friendliness is hopefully on the rebound and stronger than ever. To see people pushing strollers and riding bikes or simply walking along Lorain makes these last three years well worth it. Please take a minute to stop up, and I mean stop, along Lorain Avenue to enjoy this wonderful rejuvenation. Block Club interest has also enjoyed a recent up-tick. Thanks to those well established clubs that continue to impress with their ideas and commitment. Thanks also to the newer interested streets including; Greenway, West 157, and West 148. As frequently stated, Block Clubs are a great way to know what’s happening on the street as well as to keep an eye out for our neighbors and our neighborhood. Please call if you have an interest in starting a Block Club on your street. In closing I would like to remind everyone to shop locally. Make a stop at one of those local stores you haven’t visited in a while. Just check it out. Tell them you live down the street and appreciate what they do. That is not only the life line of our neighborhood but of our nation. God Bless, e an e K y t r a M Annual Town Meeting a Popular, Interesting, & Fun Event! The George Varouh Cretan Club of Cleveland – A History The Cretan Mutual Benefit Association was founded in 1918 in Cleveland Ohio. The purpose of the association was to promote camaraderie among Cretans living in Cleveland. (Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands.) The “benefit” in the name comes from the fact that there was a death benefit for the members. If you died and didn’t have the money for a burial, the association would pay the bill for you. As the years passed by, the purpose of the association slowly started to change. Scholarships started being awarded and the sick were being helped when they needed it. A very active member and major benefactor was George Varouh, so the organization named the club after him. He died July 26, 2011, at the age of 102. Another focus was the Cretan heritage and traditions. The members wanted their traditions, language, and culture handed down to their children. Emphasis was placed on being a good citizen and education was, and is, at the forefront. Throughout the eighty-some years the association has existed, there was always a want and need for its own building. Somehow this dream never had transpired until recently. Upon researching different neighborhoods, the association focused on the Kamm’s Corner’s area. According to past president George Hohlakis “We thought that we could find a building that was affordable and still be in a nice area of Cleveland. After searching high and low, we finally found the building we are occupying and bought it. Even though it needed extensive renovations, we knew with time and effort, we could make it our home for now and the future.” “After meeting with the councilman at the time, Michael Dolan, he suggested we apply for the Storefront Renovation Program to update and beautify the front of our building. After contact was made with Cindy Janis of Kamm’s Corners Development Corporation, we filled out the application, and we were on our way! Tim Barrett, a city designer, made a beautiful plan for our sign, and, with some painting and extensive landscaping, we have a most beautiful storefront that we are extremely proud of! Cindy was very meticulous throughout the entire process and guided us every step of the way. Our sign is very unique because it sits on two massive Minoan columns and has the horns of the famous Cretan bull sitting on top of it. Many have said they feel like they are in Crete when looking at the sign and the large stones that are part of our landscaping.” We are very happy the Cretan Center is part of the Kamm’s Corners family! 7 The Asphalt Cinema is Great Summer Fun! The new location, at 15233 Triskett Road, was recently renovated with the assistance of the City of Cleveland Storefront Renovation Program (SRP). T h e SRP offers professional design assistance and a 40% rebate up to a maximum of $25,000 for comprehensive exterior renovations. One of the goals of the program is to maintain the architecture and restore the building. Unfortunately, the entire brick building had been covered with white paint. To restore the design of the building, a brick color paint that closely matched the original brick was chosen and applied. Also, the aluminum storefront door was replaced with an oak wood-grain textured fiberglass door. Custom made canvas awnings with Italian colors – red, white and green – were installed over the windows and the entrance. Black gooseneck lights project over the roofline, and red neon signage with the Geppetto’s logo letters wrap across the corner of the building. According to owner Mike O’Malley, who grew up in the neighborhood and graduated from St. Mel’s, he feels like he’s back home. “We were at our first location for 30 years, and it’s great being back in the neighborhood and seeing all my former customers again,” said Mike. “It’s like a reunion every time someone walks into the store.” Mike proudly states that Geppetto’s is the winner of 12 National and Local Rib Burn-Off competitions. “We slow cook St. Louis ribs and then charbroil with our award winning BBQ sauce.” Other menu favorites are boneless and regular wings with a selection of 14 different sauces. The most popular pizzas are the Deluxe with a choice of six of the standard fifteen toppings, and the Hawaiian Delight: a delicious combo of ham, bacon and pineapple with special island spices. Topping the list of sandwiches is the homemade Meatball Sandwich covered with sauce and cheese, and the Philly Cheese Steak filled with shaved ribeye grilled with peppers, onions and mushrooms then smothered with cheese. Also, Geppetto’s offers a selection of fresh salads, calzones and sides of slaw, baked beans and fries, plus cheesecake and Cinnamon Wheely for dessert. There’s always something cooking at the Public House. • Great home-made soups and specials created daily! • Live entertainment most weekends! • Corned Beef Dinner Special served all day Wednesday! • Perfect for all occassions: Public House Gift Cards! Some of those are picked only a few blocks away! Two new market vendors raise vegetables for the market in their own yards nearby. Each learned how to do it through programs offered by Growhio, an organization that strengthens and supports all aspects of Northeast Ohio’s local food economy. “My involvement started last April, when I went to the “Know Your Food” series at River’s Edge on Rocky River Drive,” said Ginger Needham. She had been thinking about starting a vegetable garden and attended a presentation titled “What’s Growing in Your Neighborhood,” given by Jenny Kelley, KCFM Manager. Jenny was joined by representatives from local farmers markets and community supported agriculture organizations. They shared their knowledge and answered questions about food and why locally grown food is the best. Growhio was looking for people who were interested in becoming urban farmers. Ginger decided to become part of Growhio’s urban farming program, which provides information about growing, pricing, marketing, record keeping, and more. Needham Gardens LLC was born. “My college student son, Andrew, does a lot of the work here,” said Ginger, who also has a full time job away from the garden. She and Andrew garden their yard at West 130th and Kirton Avenue. Most of the garden is in raised beds. In addition, they are gardening on three adjacent lots, which she recently purchased. Two of the lots are unsuitable for building, which worked in her favor. The house on the other was destroyed by fire. Now those vacant lots are growing tomatoes, radishes, onions, Swiss chard, romaine, collard greens, basil, mint, and lemon balm. Zucchini is almost ready. Seven hens will soon produce eggs for the market. Only one is mature enough to do so now. Caring for hens seems natural to Ginger. She was raised on a farm in North Royalton that had been in the family since 1803. The youngest of 10 children, she recalls how hard her parents worked the farm. “They were avid gardeners. My son has a green thumb, too,” said Ginger. Eventually, she hopes the garden will produce enough to provide a livelihood. Jill Evans grows herbs and tomatoes in seven raised beds at her home on Summerland and West 130th. She has been gardening professionally for 14 years under the name Jada’s Garden Service, offering garden planting and flowerbed maintenance. (Jada is an acronym of her name and her children’s names.) Raised in a farming family, Jill learned how to garden from her mother who has retired to the family farm in Southern Ohio. Urban gardening has long appealed to Jill. She said, “I thought about it for 10 years, but felt I didn’t have enough land to make a go of it.” Last year, her daughter discovered OSU’s urban garden initiatives and a 12-week market garden training program that ran from January through April. Jill signed up. She learned how to make the most of her land and how to grow food that is free of chemicals. This past spring, she put into practice what she learned and started Jada’s Garden Market. Her raised beds started producing right away. She grows salad greens, radishes, leeks, and herbs such as basil, thyme, oregano, sage, parsley, dill, rosemary, and tarragon. Next year, she plans to expand by leasing land from the Cleveland Land Bank close to home. “Good practices lead to the freshest food. We eat what we grow, and I feel better than ever,” said Jill. “Gardening knowledge plus my business degree equaled a super good opportunity.” Both Needham Gardens & Jada’s Garden Market are using a governmentfunded program called the Community Vendor Assistance Program (CVAP), which helps backyard growers sell their produce at farmers markets without the overhead or commitment. Any backyard produce grower may apply, and if accepted, their application fee is waived. Then, a tent and table are provided on any dates and at any market of their choice. CVAP Funding is available through a collaborative grant with Growhio, the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA), and seven area farmers markets, including our market here in Kamm’s Corners. Stop by their market booth every Sunday through October, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Buy fresh from their gardens! Thankfully, those of us who are first time gardeners receive help from WPCG’s experienced gardeners, including Barb O’Patry, master gardener and West Park resident. All are patient in their explaining and generous in their sharing of knowledge and expertise. Late last April, we started digging and sowing the seeds of our garden, armed with as much information as we could absorb and with the design of our plot in hand. Over the last couple of months, we have watched, weeded, and waited to see tiny little seeds flourish into gorgeous, delicious produce, not only in our plot, but also in the plots of our fellow gardeners. Currently growing in the gardens are a variety of tomatoes and peppers, basil, parsley, cilantro, tarragon, chives, raspberries, onions, beets, leeks, garlic, beans, peas, tomatillos, chard, potatoes, flowers, squash, cucumbers, carrots, pumpkins, cabbage, eggplant, Brussels sprouts, collards, lettuce and even peanuts. Gardening is an art and a science. It takes time and patience. It has setbacks as well as great surprises. I still have much to learn, but I am enjoying every minute of being a part of the West Park Community Garden. A special thank you to Puritas Nursery who donated seeds, to Karen for her energy and leadership, and to Laura’s Home for their partnership in this venture. Please note, coming up on September 4th, WPCG will have an information booth at Kamm’s Corners Farmers Market. Please stop by to learn more or say hello! A friend returned to Cleveland after a couple of years in Chicago and asked me, “Does West Park have any community gardens?” “Hmm,” I thought, “I am not sure but it’d be great if we did.” A couple of weeks later, I came across a piece of paper on Councilman Keane’s desk announcing a new community garden in West Park. “Perfect,” I thought and called up the number on the paper. Very shortly, I received an enthusiastic phone call back from Karen Stross, garden leader for the West Park Community Garden (WPCG). She told me there was one plot left and asked if I wanted it. “Yes,” I replied, excited and nervous to take on this task. I quickly contacted my friend and said, “West Park does have a community garden, and I just said yes to the last plot in it. It’s ours.” It was time to learn how to garden, and I had a huge learning curve ahead of me. What attracted me to this garden was not only where it was, but also how it operated. Here is a community garden where the gardeners are responsible to one another for maintaining and keeping the garden. Plus, it is on the grounds of Laura’s Home, a place of refuge for women and children in crisis. The WPCG has nine individual garden plots, eight are owned by members of the community. Laura’s Home owns the ninth. That garden is tended by their clients and provides an environment where they can learn life skills, obtain exercise, and grow produce for their kitchen. In turn, the community gardeners help out with the Laura’s Home plot and can donate produce to their kitchen. WPCG is part of Summer Sprouts, a program sponsored by the City of Cleveland and the Ohio State University Extension Office, which provides plants, seeds, and support to qualifying gardens. Organized by Erin’s West Park Community Garden plot. 13 Healthy Food and Fun Sundays at the Market! …by Jenny Kelley, Market Manager Open every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through October 31st, the Kamm’s Corners Farmers Market offers fresh produce and locally made products from nearly 40 vendors. There, the family entertainment stage featured acts such as Seussical Junior performed by Newton D. Baker School of Arts, Irish dancers, jugglers, and a DJ. There were bounce houses, craft tables, and magicians. Safely Dispose of Hazardous Waste 25 Tom Ward, West Park Blacksmith …by Gary Swilik For nearly half a century, Tom Ward’s blacksmith shop was a landmark in West Park. The one-story wood building was located on the south side of Lorain Avenue between West 140th and West 143rd. Older residents still recall the clang of metal-on-metal echoing through the neighborhood as Tom hammered at his anvil, shaping red-hot iron into farming utensils and wagon wheel rims. In later years, Tom turned his skills to auto repair and bodywork. His shop survived until the 1950s when it stood like a working memorial to a bygone era with a big square sliding doorway, an earthen floor, and a glowing fire in the forge, dimly illuminating the dark interior of the shop. Various hammers, tongs, tools, and belts hung from the wooden walls. Thomas Victor Ward was born in Fishley, Staffordshire, England, on May 23, 1887. In 1908, he married Elsie Bantoft. The groom was 21 and the bride was 23. In 1909 Tom and Elsie came to the US and settled in West Park, Ohio. Tom was already a skilled blacksmith when he arrived, having learned the trade in England. In 1915 Tom opened his first blacksmith shop at a busy crossroads in the center of West Park. “My grandfather’s first shop was on the south side of Lorain Avenue almost directly across from the Masonic Temple at the intersection of Triskett,” remembers Thomas Ward III. “My father showed me the site when I was young.” In about 1923, Tom Ward moved his blacksmith shop to 14121 Lorain Avenue (just east of the present Burger King), where he would remain in business for the next 35 years. He made his living by hammering, bending, and cutting metal to create whatever tools or objects his customers needed. Of course, blacksmiths are best known for fitting horseshoes and repairing wagons. Horses were still a common form of transportation in the early 1900s. Unfortunately for Tom, the horse was rapidly being replaced by the automobile. The local blacksmith had become an endangered species. Tom changed with the times and applied his skills to the auto industry, repairing cars, doing auto bodywork, and operating a small junkyard. West Park blacksmith Thomas V. Ward with his wife, Elsie and first-born child, George W. Ward, circa 1911. Courtesy of Joan Kosky and Gene O’Connell, Tech Imaging Services. “He also sold used cars and had them sitting on the lot,” says Tom Ward’s granddaughter Joan Kosky, now of Rockport, Massachusetts. “He repaired cars, too, but he was more than a mechanic. He did bodywork, fixed accident damage, did welding and painting. To the left of the shop was what we called ‘the junkyard.’ We would sit in the cars and pretend we were driving. Even at this time, about 1940, my grandfather still shod a horse occasionally.” “He was gregarious, honest, and hard-working,” says Joan. “He wasn’t tall but had arms on him like you wouldn’t believe and was very strong. I watched him pound red hot metal on the anvil, sparks flying, many times.” “I worked at the shop until I was 14 or 15,” says descendent, William G. Ward, of Avon Lake, Ohio. “I learned to drive playing in my grandfather’s tow truck. He was more into cars by then but still did some blacksmithing. He did work for the National Metal and Abrasive Company across the street. And produced architectural metalwork for the local building industry.” “I remember helping my grandfather make some figures for the bowling alley at the southeast corner of West 130th and Brookpark Road,” William goes on. “Figures of people bowling, just stick figures, made out of flat iron. They were mounted on the wall of the bowling alley. I heard they might still be in the basement of the building, but I have no idea.” “Tom Ward’s blacksmith shop was right behind my grandparent’s house,” recalls Jack Keane who grew up in the neighborhood and still lives nearby. “I never saw a horse in there but I saw him hammering horseshoes on the anvil. And I remember seeing three or four old buggies still stored at the west corner of the lot.” Tom Ward and his wife Elsie lived in West Park until about 1955 when they moved to North Olmsted, Ohio. However, Tom continued to commute to his shop on Lorain Avenue. He didn’t retire completely until 1958. The shop Tom Ward’s blacksmith shop and auto wrecking yard as it looked on November 30, 1943. Lorain Avenue is paved with brick lined with streetcar tracks. 26 and land was sold to local businessman Sam Columbo. The old blacksmith shop was torn down in the early 1960s when Columbo put up the modern buildings that still occupy much of the site today. Tom and Elsie Ward were living in North Ridgeville, Lorain County, Ohio, when Tom passed away in 1961 at the age of 74 years. In addition to his wife, his son George, and daughter Myrtle Kosky, he left nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. “We all loved my grandfather,” says Thomas Ward III. “He loved all us kids and liked to have us in the shop working with him.” “I adored him,” says Joan Kosky. “If you could pick a grandfather, he is the one you would pick. I still have an engagement present he made for my grandmother. A beautiful wood case holding miniature replicas of all his blacksmithing tools.” Tom’s wife Elsie died in 1969, a great-grandmother of thirteen. Tom and Elsie Ward are buried side-by-side at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in North Olmsted, Ohio. N eighborhood S potlights ! Annual Heroes Run Supports Memorial The West Park Cleveland Police and Firefighters Memorial Fund was established in 2002 to create a lasting Memorial to honor both Police Officers and Firefighters who gave their lives in the line of duty while either serving the citizens of Cleveland’s West Park area or while living in the community. The Memorial itself is set in the Memorial Walkway along the west side of Rocky River Drive. At its center is the Memorial, a granite and bronze sculpture overlooking the scenic Metro Park. Designed by local artist and sculptor Paula Blackmon it not only represents the tremendous sacrifice made by these Police Officers and Firefighters, but also offers their families and the community a gathering place to honor their memory. Joining to support this memorial are the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association, Firefighters Local 93, Federal, State, Local Government, and local citizens. Also, to show appreciation and support for the West Park community, a scholarship is given each year to a local school in the name of one of the fallen Police Officers and Firefighters. The Cleveland Heroes Run, a 5-mile and 2-mile Community Race, was created to raise funds not only to make this tribute possible, but also to establish and fund annual scholarships for family members of West Park Police Officers and Firefighters whose names appear on the Memorial. The 10th Annual Cleveland Heroes Run is set for Sunday, September 18th at 8:30 a.m. It begins and ends at Saint Joseph Academy, 3430 Rocky River Drive. The event honors the memory of West Park Cleveland Police and Firefighters who have died in the line of duty. Visit the website at clevelandheroesrun.com To register for the 5-mile run or 2-mile run/walk, or call Tom Ross at 216-990-8117. Kudos to Sister Helen! Recently, Councilman Martin J. Keane, the citizens of the City of Cleveland, and the Department of Aging presented a framed certificate of recognition to Sister Helen Ann Brown for her years of service and dedication to our community. It read in part: “Sister Helen Ann’s wisdom, experience, and hard work continue to make Cleveland a wonderful place to call home. I invite all citizens to join me in extending warm greetings to this individual and wishing her many more years of happiness, success, and service.” Signed: Mayor Frank G. Jackson. Sister Helen Ann Brown Sister Helen Ann served on the citizen’s advisory council of the Department of Aging as a volunteer for the past six years, representing Ward 19. “I did what I could for people in the community, especially making sure seniors received information about programs that enhance the quality of their lives,” she said. Despite some challenging health issues, she missed only two meetings during her term. She is a member of the Congregation of Saint Joseph on Rocky River Drive, having joined the order in 1957. Since she visits the Kamm’s Corners Farmers Market regularly, you may see her and join in our congratulations! 27 2.3% Rae-Ann Announces The REAL Founder a New Care Focus of West Park! If you wondered about the mysterious billboard on Rocky River Drive earlier this summer, it was pointing to this. Continuing 37 years of specialized service to West Park, Rae-Ann’s family-owned and operated facility at 4650 Rocky River Drive is changing its care focus to offer the “best skilled care in the neighborhood.” As of August 1st, Rae-Ann West Park (formerly Rae-Ann Center) is providing excellent skilled rehabilitation for both short term/return to home patients, as well as fulfilling long term resident needs. Less than two miles from Fairview Hospital, the facility offers a perfect place to safely transition from a hospital stay to home. Long-term care will continue to be a focus at the facility, with exceptional skilled nursing care. Rae-Ann West Park will soon be breaking ground on a new 1,600 sq. ft. state-of-the-art therapy room for physical, occupational, and speech therapy. The design includes cathedral ceilings and high windows to bring in a myriad of natural light, creating a positive, motivating therapy space. Outpatient therapy will also be offered. (See their centerfold ad.) For information about this or any of five Rae-Ann facilities, call the admission coordinator at 440-835-3004. Lorain Avenue, roughly from present West 137th to West 143rd Street. The red brick home he built in 1842 still stands in that area today. John M. West, and his wife, Frances, had eight children in that house, raising six of them to adulthood. John passed away on his farm in 1890. “Fannie” followed him in 1902. Ironically the man who put the “West” in West park is not buried in the community he founded. He’s not even buried on the west side! His weathered but still legible gravestone stands in East Cleveland Cemetery. How did Mr. West end up so far east? John’s parents were early settlers in Euclid Township and had purchased lots in the then prestigious East Cleveland Cemetery. Apparently he simply chose to be buried in the available space beside his parents. So who the heck is Benjamin West? Census records, biographies, obituaries and burial records fail to place such a person in our area’s past . Apparently a newspaper writer in 1958 made an error and it’s been repeated ever since. So step aside Benjamin, it’s time for old John M. West to get some credit! …by Gary Swilik Many know the story of old West Park. Early settler Benjamin West bought a 600-acre farm in Rockport Township, reserving 25 acres as his “front yard.” He added an artificial lake, complete with row boats, forming a park-like wooded preserve at present Lorain Avenue and West 138th Street. “West Park,” as it came to be called, provided the name for the short-lived city that grew up in the area. West Park was annexed by the City of Cleveland in 1923. All accurate except for one important detail. A careful check of historical records reveals West Park’s actual namesake was not Benjamin but John M. West! The many sources that list Benjamin as founder of West Park are wrong! John M. West was born in 1811 in county Leitrim, Ireland. He emigrated to America with his parents in 1826 where the outdoor life held more appeal for him. The land he bought and farmed ran along the south side of <=A ROCKSOLID STONE WORKS <9-5=963. A DIVISION OF WOOD DIMENSIONS, INC. But you also may have inherited her health—for good and bad. And when you’re looking for similarities, it’s important to think whole-body, especially if your mother had difficulties during her pregnancy. Pregnancy is billed as a beautiful experience punctuated by simple joys like feeling the first kick or picking colors for the nursery. But complications can sometimes create stress for soon-to-be parents. Cleveland Clinic Maternal-Fetal Medicine experts at Fairview Hospital offer state-ofthe-art care and emotional support to families facing underlying medical conditions, difficulties with poor pregnancy outcomes, or suspected or known problems with mother or baby. High-risk pregnancy-related services include preconception planning, early screening, pregnancy management (primary or consultative), and delivery. The following checklist can help you determine if you could have a high-risk pregnancy. • Women over 35 years old are at increased risk of giving birth to a child with a chromosomal anomaly • Women under 17 are at increased risk of experiencing intrauterine growth restriction • Women carrying more than one baby are at risk of experiencing a number of pregnancy-related complications, including preterm labor • Women with a chronic health condition such as diabetes, heart problems, or a blood-clotting disorder • Women with a history of gynecological problems such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), endometriosis, or large symptomatic fibroids • Women with a history of pregnancy loss (miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, preeclampsia or stillbirth) or premature birth * Women with an STD, including HIV, that could be transmitted to the baby during pregnancy or at the time of birth • Women who have had two or more second-trimester abortions • Women who have conceived while using an IUD • Women who have a child with a genetic disorder or are a carrier Any pregnancy can become high risk. You should call your caregiver immediately if you experience vaginal bleeding, a leakage of fluid, pain in the abdomen or shoulder or painful, urgent urination. If you are expecting, regardless of whether or not you are high-risk, here are some tips for a healthy pregnancy: 1. Take 400 micrograms of folic acid daily. This B vitamin prevents spinal and brain birth defects. 2. Get 1,000 milligrams of calcium daily. Take a supplement or eat dairy and leafy greens, because it isn’t included in most prenatal vitamins. 3. Eat only pasteurized cheeses and fully cooked meats. Bacteria can lead to premature delivery or miscarriage. 4. Avoid raw fish and shellfish. They may contain a parasite that can cause infant blindness or brain damage. 5. Follow a low-fat, high-fiber diet, broken into several small meals a day to help prevent nausea. 6. Don’t smoke or drink. Both can cause birth defects, and smoking can lead to premature birth or infant death. 7. Don’t change cat litter. Parasites are found here too. 8. Sleep on your side to reduce pressure on your back from your belly weight. 9. Use a seat belt correctly. Place the lap strap under your belly and the chest strap off to the side of your belly (never directly over it) and between your breasts. 10. Lastly, exercise to improve circulation, mood, and energy. For any pregnancy, the Cleveland Clinic team at Fairview’s unique teambased approach gives women many advantages. Women who have significant medical problems and/or a history of serious pregnancy complications benefit from careful planning and appropriate treatment prior to pregnancy to prevent or significantly decrease the risk for problems. Women carrying babies with known or potential health issues have immediate access to experts in the care 30 of newborns, including neonatologists, pediatric surgeons and subspecialists, who can ensure the best possible outcome. For example, if a baby has been found to have a heart defect, the team includes pediatric cardiologists and cardiac surgeons who will help further counsel the family, prepare them for the child’s care after birth, and provide any necessary intervention. The Maternal-Fetal Medicine team includes perinatologists, genetic counselors, and medical geneticists, neonatologists (experts in the care of newborns), pediatric surgeons in a variety of subspecialties, licensed sonographers, and perinatal nurses. They offer comprehensive care in a warm and supportive environment close to home, with offices throughout Northeast Ohio, including one at Fairview Hospital. N eighborhood S potlights ! Scout Extraordinaire! Jonathan Andrew Higginbotham: Jonathan has been involved in scouting most of his life. In first grade, he joined The Cub Scouts at Saint Vincent DePaul. After a year in Pack 160, it dissolved for lack of numbers. A year later, he joined Our Lady of Angels (OLA) Cub Scout Pack 182, where he moved through the ranks of Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos. In the fifth grade, he achieved the Arrow of Light, crossing over to Troop 82 at OLA, thus becoming a full fledged Boy Scout. As such, he participated in many campouts and events. He helped younger scouts in the MetroParks during Cub Scout week with hiking, knot tying, fire building, archery, and overnight camping. Over time, Jonathan held many positions such as scribe, librarian, assistant patrol leader as well as patrol leader, and the highest position of all as the senior patrol leader. At 14, Jonathan began working as a CIT for the Beaumont Scout Reservation in Ashtabula, Ohio. He has continued to work there for the past four years. While at Camp Falling Rock, Jonathan made it through the program ‘Fox Fire’ as a mountain man living in the past where he endured cooking over an open fire and living without technology. This encouraged him to do his Eagle Scout Project. The project consisted of four segments to serve a whole. Weeding and planting, stone bordering, creating a flowerbed, and leveling stones. These were done in the Peace Garden at Metro Catholic Parish in Cleveland. Jonathan Higganbotham 31 Jonathan achieved the Honor of Merit during his junior year and became a member of the Eagle Scout Class of 2010. He graduated from Lakewood High School, majoring in CISCO Networking and technology, which includes the A+ certification. He has taken pre-college courses such as Algebra 2, Tech Prep, and Creative Writing. He will attend Cuyahoga Community College and plans to eventually transfer to Cleveland State University majoring in CISCO as a certified networking engineer. If You See Something – Say Something!
