A letter from the Chairman of the Board
September 2014 NEMEON Board of Directors Chairman Ross Riddle South Coast Shingle Co. Long Beach, CA Treasurer Stuart Lucks Long Island Tinsmith Suppl Corp. Glendale, NY Director John Askin Jr The Standard Group Tinton Falls, NJ Director Jack Bone Bone Roofing Supply Chicago, IL Director Ron Calhoun Palmer Donavin Mfg Co Columbus,OH Director Mitch Cawley Roofers Mart Southeast Birmingham, AL A letter from the Chairman of the Board Ross Riddle Well, as expected, the NEXT GEN MEETING went off without a hitch. Due to a previous commitment, I was not able to attend, however according to all reports Portland was a great choice for the meeting. Likewise for the tour of Dealers Supply location, and that of CertainTeed’s roofing plant…indeed another home run. As is always the case, there were a couple of minor bumps in the road, but that’s just part of coordinating an event of that size. Our compliments to our great staff for all their hard work to make this yet another successful NEMEON outing. I would like to take a moment to talk about our LionGUARD University program. After a bit of a slow start, we’re picking up momentum and have added many new courses, with more on the drawing board. I know that Vic is encouraging our Preferred Vendors to get on board with some meaningful courses ASAP. It’s really a no brainer for the vendors to want to educate our sales staff on their products, as the end result is likely to mean that we all will sell more of their products. Likewise for all NEMEON members, because if our sales staff is well versed on more products, it’s certainly logical to think that they will probably be more effective producers…and isn’t that what we all want? I told our entire sales force that I expected them to take all the courses as they come available. In our bimonthly sales meetings we discuss the courses, and how many each of our team has taken. It took a few weeks, but I’m happy to say that every one of our salesmen has taken every available course, and are awaiting the arrival of more courses. I have taken them all as well, and while there are a couple that are a little light in content, the bulk of them are informative and worthwhile. If nothing more, it encourages everyone to get more involved with the NEMEON programs. That, in and of itself, is reason enough to get your people involved. We all know the value of a little competition amongst the staff. It’s contagious, and once it starts it builds upon itself. My hope is that more members will see the benefit of this educational program. I believe it’s imperative that we take advantage of every program available to make our people sharper than the competition. Remember that all our big national competitors are constantly training their people! If we lag behind, we’ll be playing catch up. Our big competitors can only beat us if we let them. I say we can’t afford to stand divided…If we stand together, as a group, we can compete with anyone! It’s like Benjamin Franklin once said, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” Director Janice Meyr B & R Supply & Equipt Co., Inc. Dave O’Donnell After returning from the Next Gen meeting in Portland I took some time to reflect on all of the great moments that stood out to me and I couldn’t narrow it down to a few single moments. The meeting began with our monthly Board of Directors meeting which was open to everyone. There was a nice turnout and everyone got to experience being a part of the meeting. The feedback the board received on some of the initiatives that we are working on was invaluable. Following the Board meeting was the official Next Gen meet and greet held in the lobby of the historic Benson Hotel. I sat back and watched as the majority of the Next Gen’ers introduced themselves to the new attendees. By the time the function ended it appeared that there was an air of camaraderie among everyone. Suite 350 Woodbury, MN 55125 Phone: 651-788-7810 Fax: 651-788-7807 www.NEMEON.coop The following day started with a tour of the CertainTeed roofing plant in Portland where our large group had to be broken down into smaller groups for the tour. This gave everyone additional time to look at all of the different product displays and spend some time networking with each other. The conversations that I overheard were centered on the different types of roofing offered by the members and how their marketing efforts are specifically targeted to the different types of contractors. Our next stop was to take a tour of the local NEMEON member, Dealers Supply Company, which is just down the street from three roofing manufacturing facilities. Dealers just celebrated their first year at their brand new location and there were many things for the Next Gen’ers to see. There are many types of distribution facilities around the US and no one facility has the perfect fit for everyone. Dealers, being a new facility, had a lot of thought put into it and everyone on the tour was able to take a few things away that might be helpful to them. The balance of the afternoon was spent discussing the initiatives that the group has asked the Board of Directors to adopt. It is very enlightening to hear so many great ideas and to have members of the group volunteer to work on the initiatives outside of the meeting. Our final presentation from Owens Corning was interesting and thought provocative; we have had some challenging years and all are looking forward to some positive economic conditions on the horizon. The day concluded with a dinner and social hour at a local restaurant where everyone had a chance to discuss the happenings of the day and to get to know each other a little better. I continue to see some great relationships forming between the Next Gen members and I know they will be networking throughout the year. The beginning of the final day started with a talk from Robert Langdon author of Managing Your Business for Profit. Bob’s talk centered on three routes to increased profitability. It was very interesting to hear about the ways in which you can mathematically take a look at your business and devise a way in which you can more easily change the bottom line in a positive manner. I felt that this was especially important in today’s flat market where our competitors think that lowering prices will gain them business. Some of the information presented was obvious, but is often overlooked on a daily basis because we are concentrating on other issues. These issues, in addition to some of the deeper issues that can be analyzed, were eye opening to all in attendance. The final session of the meeting was a panel discussion on taking a leadership role in your company, which turned out to be one of the highlights of the two day meeting. Everyone shared their experience and opinions on what is necessary to be more involved in the day to day operation of your business and the steps necessary to make a positive change. The topic was so popular that we ran out of time and are considering adding something similar to one of our breakout sessions at the annual meeting in Puerto Rico. In fact many potential discussion topics came out during the session that will be considered for inclusion to the annual meeting. They currently have operations in Kalispell, Belgrade and now Helena. The first day of business was June 2, 2014, and have had a warm welcome by the trades in the greater Helena area. Their local service area is about a 40 mile radius, with opportunities extending to 90 miles. They look forward to strengthening and growing our business along with our NEMEON organization. Continued from page 2 Some of you might be wondering why I just gave an overview of the 2014 Next Gen meeting; my reasons for doing so are multifaceted. First and foremost if you don’t have anyone from your company attending this meeting you should seriously consider sending a representative. You don’t need to have a son or daughter that is involved in the business, the benefits that can be derived from sending anyone that has a management roll or someone that can grow into a similar position within your company can prove to be far reaching when applied to the day to day operation of your business. They will come back from this meeting with many great ideas and will have a new found group of your peers that they can talk shop with throughout the year. We also made the decision to incorporate our preferred vendors into this meeting as they want to start relationships with the future leaders of our businesses. Our preferred vendors are sending their future leaders to these meetings as well. We are also seeing members attending the Next Gen because they want to hear some of the new and fresh ideas that are being talked about; they feel that there is a wealth of information from the younger generation as they look at the business differently than they do. The members also share their experiences as they were coming up in the business helping the Next Gen to take the right steps and potentially learn and expand on innovations that have taken place in the roofing industry over the years. As we move toward planning the annual meeting in Puerto Rico I want to emphasize to all of you what a great experience it is for everyone when we come to these meeting and share our ideas and experiences. To a major degree this is what NEMEON is all about, working together for the good of everyone. Great things can be accomplished when we are working in conjunction with our preferred vendors and always keeping the NEMEON mantra of “shifting the share” whenever possible. Historically, training has been done by suppliers in a “face to face” environment which means that Suppliers and Member Distributors have to travel to conduct or attend training. Distributor sales people travel to a Suppliers location for a 1 or 2 day training session, or Suppliers and sales reps or regional managers to the Distributors’ location to conduct hands on training. Although this training is effective, it is expensive and timing can be an issue with the continual introduction of new products/applications. Ultimately Suppliers need to get their customers trained and up to date on their offering without “waiting to train” due to busy calendars. LionGUARD U allows Suppliers to post training modules (new products, repair training, safety training) allowing Member Distributor Salesperson training online 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Each module includes a quiz to insure students understand and can apply the training on future sales call. LionGUARD U has turned out to be a very cost effective training method, with the average cost per student trained at under $10 per student! Typical hands on training runs $50 to $250 per student. As of September 1st, LionGUARD University has almost 1,000 distributor member students taking courses and that number is constantly growing. There are more than fifteen courses available for students and many suppliers preparing to offer their first course to the member community. Contact Vic Anthony, Andi Voelker or Dave O’Donnell at NEMEON to submit your employee list or to learn more about offering courses through LionGUARD University! Contact Brian Greenberg with BlueVolt, the company that hosts LionGUARD University with questions about getting involved!
