A letter from the Chairman of the Board
December 2015 NEMEON Board of Directors Chairman Jack Bone Bone Roofing Supply Chicago, IL Treasurer Stuart Lucks Long Island Tinsmith Suppl Corp. Glendale, NY Director Ron Calhoun Palmer Donavin Mfg Co Columbus,OH Director Mitch Cawley Roofers Mart Southeast Birmingham, AL Director Dale Houtman Cedar Grove Roofing Supply Surrey, BC Director Julius Krisanic Wholesale Siding Depot St. Louis, MO A letter from the Chairman of the Board Jack Bone What a great job our NEMEON team and the Board of Directors are doing! Being able to announce the date and location of the 2017 annual meeting in the September, 2015 newsletter was fantastic! It allows us all time to get our calendars marked and plan which company reps can attend. The high attendance rate of 100% that we are constantly striving to attain can certainly be a reality. Strength in numbers is the major bargaining chip we have with our vendors and a showing of all of our membership at the annual meetings would certainly go a long way toward solidifying our relationship with our vendors. As a reminder as well as something to look forward to, the 2017 meeting will be held from February 14 to February 16 at the Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort and Spa in Palm Springs, California. Of significant importance to those of us who are no longer spring chickens, is that the NEXT GEN program has taken on its own life, bonding the older and younger generations and empowering the younger generation with knowledge of people in the same industry across the country, wisdom from the elders, and a vision of the future of our industry. The company that prepares for the future will be the company that prospers in the future. The large consolidators (ABC, Allied, etc.) may be bigger in every way than we are as individual companies, but they can’t touch us when it comes to our personnel, knowledge of the local markets, the passion for what we do, and the entrepreneurial spirit that we each bring to the table, and perhaps the best part of all that is THEY KNOW IT TOO! As another holiday season approaches, I want to extend to each of you and yours a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2016. It’s my sincere hope that the 2016 national election brings to our country a more cohesive and cooperative national government, and our entire world becomes a more peaceful place. If the number of current candidates is any indication, there is currently great dissatisfaction nationwide. As we prepare for business in 2016 and all the unknown challenges that we will face, it’s important to remember that because we are each a part of NEMEON, we are never alone and have leadership and support from members all over the country. We are also actively monitoring our progress in 2015 and keeping the members informed of our goals for the end of the year. This is also the time of year when we start to work on the programs for 2016. We review all of the programs and look for opportunities that will be a benefit to both our members and preferred vendors. There are a number of product categories where shifting the share might not mean much to a member because the sales volume is small; but when combined with other members there is a meaningful impact for that vendor. In some cases these sales go to outside vendors when they could have potentially gone to one of our preferred vendors. Try doing this with three or four preferred vendors and you will notice a change in your quarterly reports. If you have any employees that are not familiar with NEMEON please fill them in and let us know if we can help. With the predicted slow growth that the industry is facing, it becomes even more important to shift the share, especially when it comes to the product categories that support our core businesses. Now is the time to look where you might have room to transfer some business to our preferred vendors. Make sure to consider all of the product categories where we have member programs. Please try doing this before it is time to submit your appointment requests for the face to face sessions at the annual meeting. Any one of the NEMEON team members can help you with information that you might need to make a decision or if you just need some advice on any specific product categories. We are looking forward to seeing all of you in Galveston at the beginning of February. "All three of our durable slate composite roofing profiles now boast a truly authentic quarried look," says Ray Rosewall, CEO and president of DaVinci Roofscapes. "The enhancement to the SingleWidth profile was so positively received earlier this year that we've taken the steps to offer all of our slate tiles with thicker, more realistic profiles that accurately replicate real slate." Details on the edges of the DaVinci slate tiles now have a more accurate quarried look to them. Deeper impressions in the tiles make them appear thicker, even though they're the same weight as the previous tiles. "This is just one example of how we're continually refining our products and making improvements that enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of DaVinci polymer roofing products," says Rosewall. "As with all our polymer roofing materials, these three slate profiles resist impact, fire and severe weather conditions. "These are man-made slate tiles that accurately reflect the look of natural slate. However, they have properties that are so advanced that we've been able to provide a lifetime limited materials warranty on them." Low-maintenance slate tiles from DaVinci resist algae and moss growth, come in 50 standard colors and are rated for installation in areas experiencing high winds, hail and wildfires. DaVinci Multi-Width Slate comes in five different widths - 12", 10", 9", 7" and 6" and is available in a number of different color blends. Single-Width Slate and Bellaforté Slate tiles from DaVinci are available in a 12" tile width, also in a variety of color blends. Wausau, one of our two step distributors, joined NEMEON in 2005 and is actively participating in the NEMEON two-step program. I recently had the pleasure of visiting with Wausau at their facility in Schofield, Wisconsin which houses their corporate offices and manufacturing facilities. Corporate Office located at: 7102 Commerce Drive Schofield , WI 54476 www.wausausupply.com E-newsletter Available at: www.NEMEON.coop Wausau opened their doors for business in 1947, business flourished and in 1965 they purchased their first delivery truck. They started making deliveries on a planned route where customers could now count on Wausau being in their area on a regularly scheduled basis. The business kept expanding and by the 1990’s Wausau had established themselves as one of the premier two step distributors in their area. Today Wausau has 17 locations in 10 different states and they offer regularly scheduled service in all of their marketing areas as well as many other programs and product categories. I’d like to touch on some of the different product categories that Wausau is involved in as they can be a great asset to any of the NEMEON members. Roofing - Wausau carries the entire line of CertainTeed roofing products; when you get a call for a special request you can feel confident that Wausau will have it in stock and be able to get it for you in a timely fashion. Siding – Wausau carries CertainTeed siding and also offers LP’s Smartside product that they pre-finish under their Diamond Kote label. Wausau has been pre-finishing composite siding for a long time and has a proven track record of success with their Diamond Kote products. Millwork – Wausau manufacturers their own millwork and distributes it under the Waudena Millwork label. They offer a complete line of millwork for interior and exterior applications along with interior doors, moldings, door frames and a host of other products. Exterior doors – Wausau’s exterior doors are manufactured in house and have been very popular. They offer wood, steel and fiberglass doors in all sorts of grains and have any option that you could imagine. This is just a brief list of some of their more popular product categories; they also supply Adhesives, Decking, Engineered Wood, Stone, Insulation, Brick, Ventilation and much more. After I left my meeting with Wausau I got to thinking about how beneficial the NEMEON two step program is to our one step members. We all have seen the surge in composite siding products over the last few years; they are gaining momentum and have experienced share growth over traditional vinyl siding. Having access to the LP Smartside product with Wausau’s Diamond Kote is the perfect complement to your vinyl siding offering. By working with Wausau on these products you can offer your contractors a great product and be able to maintain a moderate to low inventory without causing problems with your customers. If you have a special order and don’t want to have to place a full truck Wausau can help you with that as they probably will have it in stock. More importantly you will have access to products that you don’t stock, but have the ability to sell. We have more and more members getting into the millwork business and having a supplier like Wausau helps keep your inventory under control with regular scheduled deliveries. Exterior doors and Decking are good opportunity as you don’t need to carry much inventory; all you need are some displays and the product knowledge so you can promote these products to your customers. I really enjoy visiting members because I always find out something new that that I am sure will be beneficial to another member and my visit to Wausau was eye opening in that regard. All of the NEMEON two step distributors have a lot to offer each member and I would like to encourage every member to look at their product offerings too see if a NEMEON two step member can help out. If you ever have a need for material that you don’t purchase direct from a manufacturer you should be looking to the NEMEON two step distributors before you look at any supplier outside of the group. They are set up to service your needs and as a fellow NEMEON member there might be some additional incentives for you. There is a good chance that you will be hearing from someone at Wausau as I encouraged them to have their sales people reach out to the NEMEON members. It was great getting to know more about Wausau’s business and learning about the different product categories that they are involved with. Just another reason why I am so proud to be part of such a great organization. 4 The NEMEON Network Contact: Dave O’Donnell President / CEO 843-901-0467 [email protected] Fernando Prieto IT 651-788-7810 [email protected] NEMEON Network With the continuing support of the Preferred Vendors of NEMEON, the NEMEON Network has reached over 18 hours of content and continues to grow. First, GAF completed the acquisition of Quest Construction Products in August of this year. Quest is one of the largest manufacturers of fluid-applied roofing systems and roof-coating products in North America. Quest brands include Hydro-Stop liquid membrane products and United Coatings line of coating products. Overnight, GAF has become a major player in the coatings business. We will follow any changes regarding how GAF revamps Quest’s go to market strategy going forward. Our discussions with GAF for the 2016 programs will include questions on the availability to purchase the Quest products directly from GAF for our interested members. Next, Gaco Western has announced a major change in their distribution strategy throughout the United States. For years, Gaco Western has relied on Prime Source as its sole two-step distributor. This set up has worked well for a number of our members, as Prime Source is a Preferred Vendor and has provided excellent service for Gaco’s roof coating products. Prime Source will no longer have an exclusive on distributing Gaco products. Gaco has contacted us and they have expressed interest in becoming a Preferred Vendor in 2016 directly with NEMEON. In addition, several of our members have been contacted by their local Gaco representative and given pricing for direct purchases from Gaco. We will present the Gaco program to the Vendor Committee during our next regularly scheduled conference call. We will forward complete details on the program once a final decision has been made on adding Gaco as a Preferred Vendor. Finally, I want to close by extending my best wishes to all of our members and their families for a healthy, safe and happy holiday season. See you at the Annual Meeting. Because we can help you grow your business. A strong foundation With over 80 years of retail heritage, Synchrony Financial is a leading consumer financial services company in the United States. Our roots in consumer finance trace back to 1932, and today we are the largest provider of private label credit cards in the United States, based on purchase volume and receivables. We’re set apart by our ability to provide a range of credit products and financial expertise that help our home improvement business partners generate growth. We help consumers to make the purchases they really want and need1. Why your contractor should be offering financing to their customers It puts the consumers at ease, knowing you’ve opened up the possibilities for them. Because consumers may have mentally set a cap on spending, waiting until the end of the sales process limits not only how the consumer thinks about their purchase, but the total sales amount for the contractor also. Integrating financing into all the communications will result in more leads, closing more business, and increasing the average ticket price. Based on an average of Synchrony Bank contractor experiences and industry information. Actual results may vary. Compare with cash purchase. Why you should be offering financing solutions to your contractor According to a 2014 Major Purchase Consumer Study by Synchrony Financial, 87% of Home Improvement Synchrony Bank cardholders feel promo financing makes larger purchases more affordable. In addition, 51% of Home Improvement Synchrony Bank cardholders who used financing to make their purchase said they would have gone somewhere else, or would not have made the purchase at all, if financing was not available. The wholesale distribution business is dependent on the success of the contractors that purchase products. In order to increase your sales volume, they need to increase theirs. They do this by closing more sales, and by helping their customer purchase the products they really want. At Synchrony Financial, you have access to support – from real people, both field and inside sales support, whose focus is to help you grow your business. Contacts: Vic Anthony Vice President 973-897-6033 [email protected] Andi Voelker Mbr Services/ Marketing NEMEON LionGUARD U was launched in February 2013 as a platform to bring cost effective Preferred Vendor Training to our Members. Historically, training has been done by suppliers in a “face to face” environment which means that Suppliers and Member Distributors have to travel to conduct or attend training. Distributor sales people travel to a Suppliers location for a 1 or 2 day training session, or Suppliers and sales reps or regional managers to the Distributors’ location to conduct hands on training. Although this training is effective, it is expensive and timing can be an issue with the continual introduction of new products/applications. Ultimately Suppliers need to get their customers trained and up to date on their offering without “waiting to train” due to busy calendars. LionGUARD U allows Suppliers to post training modules (new products, repair training, safety training) allowing Member Distributor Salesperson training online 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Each module includes a quiz to insure students understand and can apply the training on future sales call. LionGUARD U has turned out to be a very cost effective training method, with the average cost per student trained at under $10 per student! Typical hands on training runs $50 to $250 per student. As of December 1st, LionGUARD University has over 1,200 distributor member students taking courses and that number is constantly growing. There are 40 courses available for students and many suppliers preparing to offer their first course to the member community. 651-229-6455 Contact Vic Anthony, Andi Voelker, or Tricia Murphy at NEMEON to submit your employee list or to learn more about offering courses through LionGUARD University!
